We report on the threshold voltage modeling of ultra-thin (1 nm-5 nm) silicon body double-gate (DG) MOSFETs using self-consistent Poisson-Schrodinger solver (SCHRED). We define the threshold voltage (V th) of symmetric DG MOSFETs as the gate voltage at which the center potential (Φ c) saturates to Φ c (s a t), and analyze the effects of oxide thickness (t ox) and substrate doping (N A) variations on V th. The validity of this definition is demonstrated by comparing the results with the charge transition (from weak to strong inversion) based model using SCHRED simulations. In addition, it is also shown that the proposed V t h definition, electrically corresponds to a condition where the inversion layer capacitance (C i n v) is equal to the oxide capacitance (C o x) across a wide-range of substrate doping densities. A capacitance based analytical model based on the criteria C i n v C o x is proposed to compute Φ c (s a t), while accounting for band-gap widening. This is validated through comparisons with the Poisson-Schrodinger solution. Further, we show that at the threshold voltage condition, the electron distribution (n(x)) along the depth (x) of the silicon film makes a transition from a strong single peak at the center of the silicon film to the onset of a symmetric double-peak away from the center of the silicon film. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Oxidovanadium(IV) complexes VO(pyphen)(L)]Cl2 (1, 2) and VO(pydppz)(L)]Cl2 (3, 4), where L is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1 and 3) and dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 2 and 4) are prepared and characterized. The crystal structure of VO(pyphen)(phen)](ClO4)2 (1a) shows a six-coordinate VN5O geometry with a VO2+ moiety in which the polypyridyl ligand binds in a meridional fashion and the phen ligand displays a chelating binding mode with an N-donor site trans to the oxidovanadyl group. The complexes show a dd band within 720-750 nm in DMF. The one-electron paramagnetic complexes are 1:2 electrolytes in DMF. The complexes exhibit an irreversible VIV/VIII redox response near -0.85 V vs. SCE in DMF/0.1 M TBAP. The complexes bind to calf thymus (ct) DNA giving Kb values within 7.5 x 104 to 1.1 x 106 M1. The complexes show poor chemical nuclease activity in the dark and exhibit significant DNA-photocleaving activity in near-IR light of 705 and 785 nm forming .OH radicals. Complexes 2-4 show remarkable photocytotoxicity in HeLa cancer cells. FACS analysis of the HeLa cells treated with complex 4 shows cell death as highlighted by the sub G1 peak. Propidium iodide staining data indicate apoptosis as the primary mode of cell death.

Reflectance change due to binding of molecules on thin film structures has been exploited for bio-molecular sensing by several groups due to its potential in the development of sensitive, low cost, easy to fabricate, large area sensors with high multiplexing capabilities. However, all of these sensing platforms have been developed using traditional semiconductor materials and processing techniques, which are expensive. This article presents a method to fabricate disposable thin film reflectance biosensors using polymers, such as polycarbonate, which are 2-3 orders of magnitude cheaper than conventional semiconductor and dielectric materials and can be processed by alternate low cost methods, leading to significant reduction in consumable costs associated with diagnostic biosensing. Titanium carbide (TiC) is an electrically conducting material with favorable electrochemical properties. In the present studies, carbon-doped TiO2 (C-TiO2) has been synthesized from TiC particles, as well as TiC films coated on stainless steel substrate via thermal annealing under various conditions. Several C-TiO2 substrates are synthesized by varying experimental, conditions and characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic techniques. C-TiO2 in the dry state (in powder form as well as in film form) is subsequently used as a substrate for enhancing Raman signals corresponding to 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and 4-nitrothiophenol by utilizing chemical enhancement based on charge-transfer interactions. Carbon, a nonmetal dopant in TiO2, improves the intensities of Raman signals, compared, to undoped TiO2. Significant dependence of Raman intensity on carbon doping is observed. Ameliorated performance obtained using C-TiO2 is attributed to the presence of surface defects that originate due to carbon as a dopant, which, in turn,, triggers charge transfer between TiO2 and analyte. The C-TiO2 substrates are subsequently regenerated for repetitive use by illuminating an analyte-adsorbed substrate with visible light for a period of 5 h.

In this paper we present the effect of thickness variation of hole injection and hole blocking layers on the performance of fluorescent green organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). A number of OLED devices have been fabricated with combinations of hole injecting and hole blocking layers of varying thicknesses. Even though hole blocking and hole injection layers have opposite functions, yet there is a particular combination of their thicknesses when they function in conjunction and luminous efficiency and power efficiency are maximized. The optimum thickness of CuPc (Copper(II) phthalocyanine) layer, used as hole injection layer and BCP (2,9 dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) used as hole blocking layer were found to be 18 nm and 10 nm respectively. It is with this delicate adjustment of thicknesses, charge balancing is achieved and luminous efficiency and power efficiency were optimized. The maximum luminous efficiency of 3.82 cd/A at a current density of 24.45 mA/cm(2) and maximum power efficiency of 2.61 lm/W at a current density of 5.3 mA/cm(2) were achieved. We obtained luminance of 5993 cd/m(2) when current density was 140 mA/cm(2). The EL spectra was obtained for the LEDs and found that it has a peaking at 524 nm of wavelength. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. We demonstrate the phase fluctuation introduced by oscillation of scattering centers in the focal volume of an ultrasound transducer in an optical tomography experiment has a nonzero mean. The conditions to be met for the above are: (i) the frequency of the ultrasound should be in the vicinity of the most dominant natural frequency of vibration of the ultrasound focal volume, (ii) the corresponding acoustic wavelength should be much larger than l(n)*, a modified transport mean-free-path applicable for phase decorrelation and (iii) the focal volume of the ultrasound transducer should not be larger than 4 - 5 times (l(n)*)(3). We demonstrate through simulations that as the ratio of the ultrasound focal volume to (l(n)*)(3) increases, the average of the phase fluctuation decreases and becomes zero when the focal volume becomes greater than around 4(l(n)*)(3); and through simulations and experiments that as the acoustic frequency increases from 100 Hz to 1 MHz, the average phase decreases to zero. Through experiments done in chicken breast we show that the average phase increases from around 110 degrees to 130 degrees when the background medium is changed from water to glycerol, indicating that the average of the phase fluctuation can be used to sense changes in refractive index deep within tissue.

This paper presents the details of nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) of three point bending specimens made up of high strength concrete (HSC, HSC1) and ultra high strength concrete (UHSC). Brief details about characterization and experimentation of HSC, HSC1 and UHSC have been provided. Cracking strength criterion has been used for simulation of crack propagation by conducting nonlinear FEA. The description about FEA using crack strength criterion has been outlined. Bi-linear tension softening relation has been used for modeling the cohesive stresses ahead of the crack tip. Numerical studies have been carried out on fracture analysis of three point bending specimens. It is observed from the studies that the computed values from FEA are in very good agreement with the corresponding experimental values. The computed values of stress vs crack width will be useful for evaluation of fracture energy, crack tip opening displacement and fracture toughness. Further, these values can also be used for crack growth study, remaining life assessment and residual strength evaluation of concrete structural components.

A novel and simple route for near-infrared (NIR)-light controlled release of drugs has been demonstrated using graphene oxide (GO) composite microcapsules based on the unique optical properties of GO. Upon NIR-laser irradiation, the microcapsules were ruptured in a point-wise fashion due to local heating which in turn triggers the light-controlled release of the encapsulated anticancer drug doxorubicin (Dox) from these capsules.

This paper presents simulation and experimental studies on the characterization of ultra wideband antennas for imaging applications. Various configurations of antennas were simulated for their time and frequency domain characteristics with special emphasis on flat responses for group delay and gain versus frequency. Parametric studies reported here showed that locating the capacitive feed strip near the vertex of the triangle gave better response in these respects. An antenna with operating frequency from 2.9GHz to 4.1GHz was fabricated and measured.

We report the synthesis of trigonal and tetragonal phase GeO2 films/microrods from a Ge wafer/powder by thermal oxidation. Both trigonal and tetragonal GeO2 exhibit excitation-dependent luminescence. Trigonal GeO2 exhibits strong green luminescence while tetragonal GeO2 exhibits strong blue luminescence when excited with ultra-violet light. Yellow-red luminescence is observed when both the phases are excited with green light. The emission wavelength varies almost linearly with the excitation wavelength both for trigonal and tetragonal GeO2. The variation is significant in the case of tetragonal GeO2, indicating a potential wavelength converter material.

This paper presents the advanced analytical methodologies such as Double- G and Double - K models for fracture analysis of concrete specimens made up of high strength concrete (HSC, HSC1) and ultra high strength concrete. Brief details about characterization and experimentation of HSC, HSC1 and UHSC have been provided. Double-G model is based on energy concept and couples the Griffith's brittle fracture theory with the bridging softening property of concrete. The double-K fracture model is based on stress intensity factor approach. Various fracture parameters such as cohesive fracture toughness (4), unstable fracture toughness (K-Ic(c)), unstable fracture toughness (K-Ic(un)) and initiation fracture toughness (K-Ic(ini)) have been evaluated based on linear elastic fracture mechanics and nonlinear fracture mechanics principles. Double-G and double-K method uses the secant compliance at the peak point of measured P-CMOD curves for determining the effective crack length. Bi-linear tension softening model has been employed to account for cohesive stresses ahead of the crack tip. From the studies, it is observed that the fracture parameters obtained by using double - G and double - K models are in good agreement with each other. Crack extension resistance has been estimated by using the fracture parameters obtained through double - K model. It is observed that the values of the crack extension resistance at the critical unstable point are almost equal to the values of the unstable fracture toughness K-Ic(un) of the materials. The computed fracture parameters will be useful for crack growth study, remaining life and residual strength evaluation of concrete structural components.

Metal-ion (Ag, Co, Ni, and Pd) doped TiO2 nanocatalysts were successfully embedded on carbon-covered alumina supports. The CCA-embedded catalysts were crystalline and had a high surface area compared to the free metal-ion doped titania nanocatalysts while they still retained the anatase phase of the core TiO2. These catalysts were photocatalytically active under solar light irradiation. Rhodamine B was used as a model pollutant and the reactivity followed a pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. The reaction rate of the CCA-supported catalysts was Pd > Ag > Co > Ni. Among the ratios of the CCA:catalyst used, it was found that the 1:1 ratio had the fastest reaction rate, followed by the 1:2 ratio, while the 2:1 ratio exhibited the lowest reaction rate. The CCA/metal-ion doped titania were found to have photocatalytic activities comparable with those of CCA-supported titania.

The photocatalytic activity of commercial titanium dioxide under UV and visible radiation was improved by composites of tungsten trioxide (WO3) with TiO2. WO3 was prepared by solution combustion synthesis and the mixed oxides/composites of WO3-TiO2 were prepared in different weight ratios (0, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1) by physical mixing. These catalysts were characterized by XRD, DRS, BET, SEM, TEM, pH drift method, TGA and photoluminescence. The photocatalytic activity varies with the WO3 loading in the composites. The optimum loading of WO3 in the composites was found to be 15 wt% for both UV and visible radiation. This loading showed faster dye degradation rate than commercial TiO2 (TiO2-C) and WO3 (WO3-C). The effect of initial concentrations of methylene blue (MB) and orange G (OG) and the effect of the functional group on dye degradation was studied with both anionic and cationic dyes with 15 wt% WO3-TiO2. This paper presents analysis and design of multilayer ultra wide band (UWB) power splitter suitable for wireless communications. An UWB power splitter is designed in suspended substrate stripline medium. The quarter wave transformer in the conventional Wilkinson power divider is replaced by broadside coupled lines to achieve tight coupling for broadband operation. The UWB power splitter is analyzed using circuit models of coupled lines and full wave simulator. Experimental results of 3dB power splitter designed using the proposed structure have been verified against the results from circuit simulation and full wave simulation. The return loss is better than 12 dB across the band 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz. Size of the power splitter is 30mm× 20mm×6.38mm.
