The effect of molecular shape and position of hydrogen bonding functionality in the solid state structural self-assembly was investigated using diaminotriazine substituted diphenyl ether based positional isomers (1-5). The molecular shape was modulated by changing diaminotriazine position that produced channel supramolecular structures in 1, 3 and 5. There exists a direct correlation between the molecular shape and three dimensional structures; more linear molecules resulted in close-packing whereas molecules with a labyrinthine topology formed a channel structure. Supramolecular aspects pertaining to the influence of solvent of crystallization in structure formation and reversible structural transformation in solid state were also explored. 1-5 exhibited tunable solid state fluorescence (lambda(max) = 437-496 nm) depending on the diaminotriazine substitutional position and 3 showed solvent-dependent solid state fluorescence. The present study describes the generation of a supramolecular channel structure with functional properties such as tunable fluorescence by varying the position of hydrogen bond functionality and solvent of crystallization.

An in situ seeding growth methodology towards the preparation of core-shell nanoparticles composed of noble metals has been developed by employing trimethylamine borane (TMAB) as the reducing agent. Being a weak reducing agent, TMAB is able to distinguish the smallest reduction potential window of any two metals which renders selective reduction of metal ions thus affording a core-shell architecture of the nanoparticles. A dramatic effect of solvent was noted during the reduction of Ag+ ions: an immediate reduction took place at room temperature when dry THF was used as solvent however, usage of wet THF (THF used directly from the bottle) brings out the reduction only at reflux conditions. In the case of Au and Pd nanoparticles, preparation was found to be independent of the quality of solvent used. Au nanoparticles are realized at room temperature whereas reflux conditions are required in the case of Pd nanoparticles. This difference in behavior of the monometallic nanoparticles was successfully exploited to construct different noble metal nanoparticles with core-shell architectures such as Au@Ag, Ag@Au, and Ag@Pd. Transformation of these core-shell nanoparticles to their thermodynamically stable alloy counterparts is also demonstrated under very mild conditions reported to date.

Intraspecific competition is a key factor shaping space-use strategies and movement decisions in many species, yet how and when neighbors utilize shared areas while exhibiting active avoidance of one another is largely unknown. Here, we investigated temporal landscape partitioning in a population of wild baboons (Papio cynocephalus). We used global positioning system (GPS) collars to synchronously record the hourly locations of five baboon social groups for similar to 900 days, and we used behavioral, demographic, and life history data to measure factors affecting use of overlap areas. Annual home ranges of neighboring groups overlapped substantially, as predicted (baboons are considered non-territorial), but home ranges overlapped less when space use was assessed over shorter time scales. Moreover, neighboring groups were in close spatial proximity to one another on fewer days than predicted by a null model, suggesting an avoidance-based spacing pattern. At all time scales examined (monthly, biweekly, and weekly), time spent in overlap areas was greater during time periods when groups fed on evenly dispersed, low-quality foods. The percent of fertile females in social groups was negatively correlated with time spent in overlap areas only during weekly time intervals. This suggests that broad temporal changes in ecological resources are a major predictor of how intensively overlap areas are used, and groups modify these ecologically driven spacing patterns at short time scales based on female reproductive status. Together, these findings offer insight into the economics of territoriality by highlighting the dynamics of spacing patterns at differing time scales.

This paper deals with the thermo-physical changes that a droplet undergoes when it is radiatively heated in a levitated environment. The heat and mass transport model has been developed along with chemical kinetics within a cerium nitrate droplet. The chemical transformation of cerium nitrate to ceria during the process is predicted using Kramers' reaction mechanism which justifies the formation of ceria at a very low temperature as observed in experiments. The rate equation modeled by Kramers is modified suitably to be applicable within the framework of a droplet, and predicts experimental results well in both bulk form of cerium nitrate and in aqueous cerium nitrate droplet. The dependence of dissociation reaction rate on droplet size is determined and the transient mass concentration of unreacted cerium nitrate is reported. The model is validated with experiments both for liquid phase vaporization and chemical reaction. Vaporization and chemical conversion are simulated for different ambient conditions. The competitive effects of sensible heating rate and the rate of vaporization with diffusion of cerium nitrate is seen to play a key role in determining the mass fraction of ceria formed within the droplet. Spatially resolved modeling of the droplet enables the understanding of the conversion of chemical species in more detail.

Microstructural changes resulting from isothermal decomposition of the beta-phase have been studied in Cu-rich binary Cu-Al and ternary Cu-Al-Sn alloys containing up to 3 at.% Sn at temperatures from 873 to 673 K. Results are presented as TTT diagrams. The decomposition occurs in several stages, each of which involves the establishment of metastable equilibrium between beta and one or more of the product phases alpha, beta(1) and gamma(2). Addition of Sn has been shown to increase the stability of the ordered beta(1)-phase in relation to beta. In alloys containing more than 2 at.% Sn, the beta(1) emerges as a stable phase. At low Sn concentrations beta(1) is metastable. An important new finding is the existence of three-phase equilibrium microstructure containing alpha, beta(1) and gamma(2). Increasing addition of Sn alters the morphology of beta(1) from rosettes to dendrites and finally to Widmanstatten needles.

Ag-Ni films were electrodeposited over a Cu substrate. Structural characterization revealed a fibrous microstructure with an amorphous structure for the as-deposited film. Isothermal annealing at 400 degrees C of the film inside transmission electron microscope led to amorphous-to-crystalline transition along with the evolution of nano-sized particles in the microstructure. The crystalline phase was Ni-Ag solid solution. The relative volume fraction of the nano-sized particles increased gradually with time. There was however no detectable decomposition of solid solution phase till about 4 h of annealing. Beyond 4 h phase separation initiated and pure Ag and Ni phases formed in the film. This study provides a methodology by which microstructural engineering of as-electrodeposited amorphous Ag-Ni films can be conducted to isolate a particular microstructure in order to tap specific potentially usable functionalities. The problem of updating the reliability of instrumented structures based on measured response under random dynamic loading is considered. A solution strategy within the framework of Monte Carlo simulation based dynamic state estimation method and Girsanov’s transformation for variance reduction is developed. For linear Gaussian state space models, the solution is developed based on continuous version of the Kalman filter, while, for non-linear and (or) non-Gaussian state space models, bootstrap particle filters are adopted. The controls to implement the Girsanov transformation are developed by solving a constrained non-linear optimization problem. Numerical illustrations include studies on a multi degree of freedom linear system and non-linear systems with geometric and (or) hereditary non-linearities and non-stationary random excitations.

Spatial information at the landscape scale is extremely important for conservation planning, especially in the case of long-ranging vertebrates. The biodiversity-rich Anamalai hill ranges in the Western Ghats of southern India hold a viable population for the long-term conservation of the Asian elephant. Through rapid but extensive field surveys we mapped elephant habitat, corridors, vegetation and land-use patterns, estimated the elephant population density and structure, and assessed elephant-human conflict across this landscape. GIS and remote sensing analyses indicate that elephants are distributed among three blocks over a total area of about 4600 km(2). Approximately 92% remains contiguous because of four corridors; however, under 4000 km2 of this area may be effectively used by elephants. Nine landscape elements were identified, including five natural vegetation types, of which tropical moist deciduous forest is dominant. Population density assessed through the dung count method using line transects covering 275 km of walk across the effective elephant habitat of the landscape yielded a mean density of 1.1 (95% Cl = 0.99-1.2) elephant/km(2). Population structure from direct sighting of elephants showed that adult male elephants constitute just 2.9% and adult females 42.3% of the population with the rest being subadults (27.4%), juveniles (16%) and calves (11.4%). Sex ratios show an increasing skew toward females from juvenile (1:1.8) to sub-adult (1:2.4) and adult (1:14.7) indicating higher mortality of sub-adult and adult males that is most likely due to historical poaching for ivory. A rapid questionnaire survey and secondary data on elephant-human conflict from forest department records reveals that villages in and around the forest divisions on the eastern side of landscape experience higher levels of elephant-human conflict than those on the western side; this seems to relate to a greater degree of habitat fragmentation and percentage farmers cultivating annual crops in the east. We provide several recommendations that could help maintain population viability and reduce elephant-human conflict of the Anamalai elephant landscape. Establishing the relative orientation of the two benzene molecules in the dimer has remained an enigmatic challenge. Consensus has narrowed the choice of structures to either a T-shape, that may be tilted, or a parallel displaced arrangement, but the relatively small energy differences makes identifying the global minimum difficult. Here we report an ab initio Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics based metadynamics computation of the free-energy landscape of the benzene dimer. Our calculations show that although competing structures may be isoenergetic, free energy always favors a tilted T-shape geometry at all temperatures where the bound benzene dimer exist. Impoverishment of particles, i.e. the discretely simulated sample paths of the process dynamics, poses a major obstacle in employing the particle filters for large dimensional nonlinear system identification. A known route of alleviating this impoverishment, i.e. of using an exponentially increasing ensemble size vis-a-vis the system dimension, remains computationally infeasible in most cases of practical importance. In this work, we explore the possibility of unscented transformation on Gaussian random variables, as incorporated within a scaled Gaussian sum stochastic filter, as a means of applying the nonlinear stochastic filtering theory to higher dimensional structural system identification problems. As an additional strategy to reconcile the evolving process dynamics with the observation history, the proposed filtering scheme also modifies the process model via the incorporation of gain-weighted innovation terms. The reported numerical work on the identification of structural dynamic models of dimension up to 100 is indicative of the potential of the proposed filter in realizing the stated aim of successfully treating relatively larger dimensional filtering problems. The acid-pyridine heterosynthon may be used as a `` molecular'' module to probe the structural landscape of the benzoic acid : isonicotinamide 1 : 1 cocrystal, BA: INA. Experimental structures of 1 : 1 cocrystals of fluorobenzoic acids (FBA) with isonicotinamide (INA) contain this heterosynthon and correspond to high-energy structures of 1 : 1 BA : INA.

The structural landscape of acid-pyridine cocrystals is explored by adopting a combinatorial matrix method with 4-substituted benzoic acids and 4-substituted pyridines. The choice of the system restricts the primary synthon to the robust acid-pyridine entity. This methodology accordingly provides hints toward the formation of secondary synthons. The pK(a) rule is validated in the landscape by taking all components of the matrix together and exploring it as a whole. Along with the global features, the exploration of landscapes reveals some local features. Apart from the identification of secondary synthons, it also sheds light on the propensity of hydration in cocrystals, synthon competition, and certain topological similarities. The method described here combines two approaches, namely, database analysis and high throughput crystallography, to extract more information with minimal extra experimental effort.

Land use (LU) land cover (LC) information at a temporal scale illustrates the physical coverage of the Earth's terrestrial surface according to its use and provides the intricate information for effective planning and management activities. LULC changes are stated as local and location specific, collectively they act as drivers of global environmental changes. Understanding and predicting the impact of LULC change processes requires long term historical restorations and projecting into the future of land cover changes at regional to global scales. The present study aims at quantifying spatio temporal landscape dynamics along the gradient of varying terrains presented in the landscape by multi-data approach (MDA). MDA incorporates multi temporal satellite imagery with demographic data and other additional relevant data sets. The gradient covers three different types of topographic features, planes; hilly terrain and coastal region to account the significant role of elevation in land cover change. The seasonality is another aspect to be considered in the vegetation dominated landscapes; variations are accounted using multi seasonal data. Spatial patterns of the various patches are identified and analysed using landscape metrics to understand the forest fragmentation. The prediction of likely changes in 2020 through scenario analysis has been done to account for the changes, considering the present growth rates and due to the proposed developmental projects. This work summarizes recent estimates on changes in cropland, agricultural intensification, deforestation, pasture expansion, and urbanization as the causal factors for LULC change.

A mild and convenient oxidative transformation of secondary alcohols to 1,5-disubstituted tetrazoles is uncovered by employing trimethylsilyl azide (TMSN3) as a nitrogen source in the presence of a catalytic amount of copper(II) perchlorate hexahydrate Cu(ClO4)(2)(.)6H(2)O] (5mol%) and 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-para-benzoquinone (DDQ) (1.2equiv.) as an oxidant. This reaction is performed under ambient conditions and proceeds through CC bond cleavage.
Pressure-Induced Bond Rearrangement and Reversible Phase Transformation in a Metal-Organic Framework
Resumo:
Pressure-induced phase transformations (PIPTs) occur in a wide range of materials. In general, the bonding characteristics, before and after the PIPT, remain invariant in most materials, and the bond rearrangement is usually irreversible due to the strain induced under pressure. A reversible PIPT associated with a substantial bond rearrangement has been found in a metal-organic framework material, namely tmenH(2)]Er(HCOO)(4)](2) (tmenH(2)(2+) = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediammonium). The transition is first-order and is accompanied by a unit cell volume change of about 10%. High-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal the complex bond rearrangement through the transition. The reversible nature of the transition is confirmed by means of independent nanoindentation measurements on single crystals.
