In this paper we employ the phenomenon of bending deformation induced transport of cations via the polymer chains in the thickness direction of an electro-active polymer (EAP)-metal composite thin film for mechanical energy harvesting. While EAPs have been applied in the past in actuators and artificial muscles, promising applications of such materials in hydrodynamic and vibratory energy harvesting are reported in this paper. For this, functionalization of EAPs with metal electrodes is the key factor in improving the energy harvesting efficiency. Unlike Pt-based electrodes, Ag-based electrodes have been deposited on an EAP membrane made of Nafion. The developed ionic metal polymer composite (IPMC) membrane is subjected to a dynamic bending load, hydrodynamically, and evaluated for the voltage generated against an external electrical load. An increase of a few orders of magnitude has been observed in the harvested energy density and power density in air, deionized water and in electrolyte solutions with varying concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl) as compared to Pt-based IPMC performances reported in the published literature. This will have potential applications in hydrodynamic and residual environmental energy harvesting to power sensors and actuators based on micro-andn nano-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS) for biomedical, maerospace and oceanic applications.

The optical properties of Bi(2)V(1-x)MnxO(5.5-x) (x=0.05, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2 at.%) thin films fabricated by pulsed laser deposition on platinized Silicon Substrates were Studied in UV-visible spectral region (1.51-4.17 CV) using spectroscopic ellipsometry. The optical constants and thicknesses of these films have been obtained by fitting the ellipsometric data (Psi and Delta) using a multilayer four-phase model system and a relaxed Lorentz oscillator dispersion relation. The surface roughness and film thickness obtained by spectroscopic ellipsometry were found to be consistent with the results obtained by atomic force and scanning electron microscopy. The refractive index measured at 650 nm does not show any marginal increase with Mn content. Further, the extinction coefficient does not show much decrease with increasing Mn content. An increase in optical band gap energy from 2.52 to 2.77 eV with increasing Mn Content from x = 0.05 to 0.15 was attributed to the increase in oxygen ion vacancy disorder. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Fabrication of single-component multilayer thin films still remains a challenging task via the layer-by-layer (LbL) approach. In this communication, we report the self-assembly of single-component multilayer thin films on flat and colloidal substrates through glutaraldehyde mediated covalent bonding.

The ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.48Ti0.52)O-3 (PZT) thin films prepared by the pulsed laser deposition technique were studied for their response to high energy lithium ion irradiation through impedance spectroscopy. The Debye peaks, observed in the impedance and modulus plots of irradiatedfilms, shifts towards higher frequencies compared to those of unirradiated films. This is equivalent to the trend observed with increase in temperature in the unirradiated films due to the dielectric relaxation. The irradiated films showed a decrease in the grain resistance compared to the unirradiated films. The activation energy of dielectric relaxation increases from 1.25 eV of unirradiated film to 1.62 eV of irradiated film. The observed modifications in the irradiated film were ascribed to the modifications in the grain structure due to the high value of electronic energy loss.

Nanostructured copper(II) oxide film was deposited using reactive DC magnetron sputtering. It has been characterized using XRD, EDAX, XPS, and FESEM. The grain size of copper oxide film was found to be 40-65 nm with size distribution. The entire study was divided into two parts. In the first part, the film has been studied for its response to alcohol at different temperatures to find the optimum sensing temperature, whereas in the second part, the film sensitivity to different alcohol concentrations were studied at fixed optimum operating temperature. The optimum temperature for the response of ethanol was observed to be 400 C,and the response for different concentrations was found to be almost linear.

We propose in experimental method to study the instability of thin unsteady separation bubbles, i.e. of unsteady boundary layers with reverse flow. The unsteady boundary layer is created by controlled temporal and spatial variations of the velocity external to the boundary layer. We present results of the evolution of instability in different temporally varying flows in a shallow angle diffuser. Depending on the extent of reverse flow in the boundary we observe that instability can be spatially localised.

We present a comprehensive study of the thickness dependent structural, magnetic and magnetotransport properties of oriented La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 thin films grown on LaAlO3 by Pulsed Laser Deposition. We observe that these films undergo a reduction in Curie temperature (T-c) with a decrease in film thickness, and it is found to be primarily caused by the finite size effect since the finite scaling law [T-c(infinity) T-c(t)/T-c(infinity) = (c/t)lambda holds good over the studied thickness range. We rule out the contribution from the strain induced suppression of Curie temperature with decreasing film thickness since all the films exhibit a constant out of plane tensile strain (0.5%) irrespective of their varying thickness. However, we observe that the coercivity of the films is an order of magnitude higher than that of the bulk due to the tensile strain. In addition, we also observe an increase in the magneto resistance peak and a decrease in coercivity and electrical resistivity with an increase in film thickness. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Aspects of large-scale organized structures in sink flow turbulent and reverse-transitional boundary layers are studied experimentally using hot-wire anemometry. Each of the present sink flow boundary layers is in a state of 'perfect equilibrium' or 'exact self-preservation' in the sense of Townsend (The Structure of Turbulent Shear Flow, 1st and 2nd edns, 1956, 1976, Cambridge University Press) and Rotta (Progr. Aeronaut. Sci., vol. 2, 1962, pp. 1-220) and conforms to the notion of 'pure wall-flow' (Coles, J. Aerosp. Sci., vol. 24, 1957, pp. 495-506), at least for the turbulent cases. It is found that the characteristic inclination angle of the structure undergoes a systematic decrease with the increase in strength of the streamwise favourable pressure gradient. Detectable wall-normal extent of the structure is found to be typically half of the boundary layer thickness. Streamwise extent of the structure shows marked increase as the favourable pressure gradient is made progressively severe. Proposals for the typical eddy forms in sink flow turbulent and reverse-transitional flows are presented, and the possibility of structural self-organization (i.e. individual hairpin vortices forming streamwise coherent hairpin packets) in these flows is also discussed. It is further indicated that these structural ideas may be used to explain, from a structural viewpoint, the phenomenon of soft relaminarization or reverse transition of turbulent boundary layers when subjected to strong streamwise favourable pressure gradients. Taylor's 'frozen turbulence' hypothesis is experimentally shown to be valid for flows in the present study even though large streamwise accelerations are involved, the flow being even reverse transitional in some cases. Possible conditions, which are required to be satisfied for the safe use of Taylor's hypothesis in pressure-gradient-driven flows, are also outlined. Measured convection velocities are found to be fairly close to the local mean velocities (typically 90% or more) suggesting that the structure gets convected downstream almost along with the mean flow.

With an objective to understand the nature of forces which contribute to the disjoining pressure of a thin water film on a steel substrate being pressed by an oil droplet, two independent sets of experiments were done. (i) A spherical silica probe approaches the three substrates; mica, PTFE and steel, in a 10 mM electrolyte solution at two different pHs (3 and 10). (ii) The silica probe with and without a smeared oil film approaches the same three substrates in water (pH = 6). The surface potential of the oil film/water was measured using a dynamic light scattering experiment. Assuming the capacity of a substrate for ion exchange the total interaction force for each experiment was estimated to include the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) force, hydration repulsion, hydrophobic attraction and oil-capillary attraction. The best fit of these estimates to the force-displacement characteristics obtained from the two sets of experiment gives the appropriate surface potentials of the substrates. The procedure allows an assessment of the relevance of a specific physical interaction to an experimental configuration. Two of the principal observations of this work are: (i) The presence of a surface at constant charge, as in the presence of an oil film on the probe, significantly enhances the counterion density over what is achieved when both the surfaces allow ion exchange. This raises the corresponding repulsion barrier greatly. (ii) When the substrate surface is wettable by oil, oil-capillary attraction contributes substantially to the total interaction. If it is not wettable the oil film is deformed and squeezed out. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

TiO2 thin films have been deposited on glass and indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates by sol-gel technique. the influence of annealing temperature on the structural , morphological and optical properties has been examined. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results reveal the amorphous nature of the as-deposited film whereas the annealed films are found to be in the crystalline anatase phase. The surface morphology of the films at different annealing temperatures has been examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The in situ surface morphology of the as-deposited and annealed TiO2 films has also been examined by optical polaromicrograph (OPM). TiO2 films infatuated different structural and surface features with variation of annealing temperature. The optical studies on these films suggest their possible usage in sun-shielding applications.
