Electrochemical oxidation of borohydride is studied on nanosized rhodium, iridium, and bimetallic rhodium-iridium catalysts supported onto Vulcan XC72R carbon. The catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in conjunction with cyclic voltammetry and polarization studies. The studies reveal that a 20 wt % bimetallic Rh-Ir catalyst supported onto carbon (Rh-Ir/C) is quite effective for the oxidation of borohydride. Direct borohydride fuel cell with Rh-Ir/C as the anode catalyst and Pt/C as the cathode catalyst exhibits a peak power density of 270 mW/cm(2) at a load current density of 290 mA/cm(2) as against 200 mW/cm(2) at 225 mA/cm(2) for Rh/C and 140 mW/cm(2) at 165 mA/cm(2) for Ir/C while operating at 80 degrees C. The synergistic catalytic activity for the bimetallic Rh-Ir nanoparticles toward borohydride oxidation is corroborated by density-functional theory calculations using electron-localization function. Base metal (Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu) substituted CeVO4 compounds were synthesized by the solution combustion technique. These compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and BET surface area analyzer. The characterization indicated that the base metals were substituted in the ionic state in all the compounds. These compounds were used for the photocatalytic degradation of phenol and the degradation rates obtained in the presence of these compounds werecompared against that obtained with the commercial Degussa P-25 TiO2 catalyst. Fe and Cr substituted CeVO4 showed photocatalytic activity that was comparable with that of Degussa P-25 TiO2. The concentration of toxic intermediates was high when the reaction was carried out in presence of Degussa P-25 TiO2 but it was found to be insignificant when the reaction was carried out in presence of base metal-substituted CeVO4. The effect of % Fe-substitution (varied from 1 to 5 at%) in CeVO4 on the photocatalytic activity was also investigated and it was observed that 1 at% Fe-substituted compound showed the highest activity. A mathematical model describing the kinetics of the photocatalytic degradation of phenol was developed on the basis of the catalyst structure and taking into account the formation of all the possible intermediates. The variation of the concentration of phenol and the intermediates was described by the model and the reaction rateconstants were determined. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Amyloid beta (A beta) is the major etiological factor implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD). A beta(42) self-assembles to form oligomers and fibrils via multiple aggregation process. The recent studies aimed to decrease A beta levels or prevention of A beta aggregation which are the major targets for therapeutic intervention. Natural products as alternatives for AD drug discovery are a current trend. We evidenced that Caesalpinia crista leaf aqueous extract has anti-amyloidogenic potential. The studies on pharmacological properties of C. crista are very limited. Our study focused on ability of C. crista leaf aqueous extract on the prevention of (i) the formation of oligomers and aggregates from monomers (Phase I: A beta(42) + extract co-incubation); (ii) the formation of fibrils from oligomers (Phase II: extract added after oligomers formation); and (iii) dis-aggregation of pre-formedfibrils (Phase III: aqueous extract added to matured fibrils and incubated for 9 days). The aggregation kinetics was monitored using thioflavin-T assay and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that C. crista aqueous extract could able to inhibit the A beta(42) aggregation from monomers and oligomers and also able todis-aggregate the pre-formed fibrils. The study provides an insight on finding new natural products for AD therapeutics. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

The deterioration of the mechanical properties of bone with age is related to several factors including the structure, organization and chemistry of the constituent phases; however, the relative contribution of each of these factors is not well understood. In this study, we have investigated the effect of chemistry (calcium deficiency) on the mechanical properties of single crystals of hydroxyapatite. Single crystals of stoichiometric crystals grown by the flux method and calcium-deficient platelet crystals grown using wet chemical methods were used as model systems. Using nanoindentation, we show that calcium deficiency leads to an 80% reduction in the hardness and elastic modulus and at least a 75% reduction in toughness in plate-shaped hydroxyapatite crystals. Measurement of local mechanical properties using nanoindentation and nanoscale chemistry through elemental mapping in a transmission electron microscope points to a direct correlation between the observed spatial variation in composition and the large scatter in the measured hardness and modulus values. The formation of crystalline diamond films from amorphous diamond-like carbon films by pulsed laser irradiation with a 300 μs non-Q-switched Nd:YAG laser has been established by a combined study of transmission electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrical resistivity. The films have been prepared by glow discharge decomposition of a mixture of propane, n-butane, and hydrogen in a rf plasma operating at a frequency of 13.56 MHz. Prior to laser irradiation, the films have been found to be amorphous by transmission electron microscope studies. After irradiation, the electron diffraction patterns clearly point out the formation of cubic diamond structure with a lattice spacing of 3.555 Å. However, the close similarity between diamond and graphite electron diffraction patterns could sometimes be misleading regarding the formation of a diamond structure, and hence, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies have been carried out to confirm the results. A chemical shift in the C 1s core level binding energies towards higher values, viz., from 286.5 to 287.8 eV after laser irradiation, and a high electrical resistivity >1013 Ω cm are consistent with the growth of diamond structure. This novel "low-temperature, low-pressure" synthesis of diamond films offers enormous potential in terms of device compatibility with other solid-state devices.

Rapidly solidified Al–Cr alloys up to 20 at. % Cr were studied to delineate the extent of crystalline and quasicrystalline phase formation in these alloys in comparison with as-cast alloys by using transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction technique. The icosahedral quasicrystals are observed from 7 to 15 at. % Cr alloys, while equilibrium ?–Al11Cr2 phase is completely absent. Both rapid solidification and subsequent thermal decomposition studies indicate that the main competing phase is ?–Al2Cr up to 15 at. % Cr. Beyond this composition ?–Al4Cr is the dominant phase together with a small amount of ?4–Al7Cr3. We have shown that the electron diffraction patterns of Al–Cr quasicrystals are often associated with a diffuse intensity distribution, indicative of short-range order. The change in quasilattice constant with composition suggests the existence of structural vacancies. Further, a sudden change from coarse to ultrafine quasicrystalline grain structure in Al-7 at. % Cr alloy points to a change in nucleation mechanism from heterogeneous to homogeneous mode during the rapid solidification.

On hydrogenation of the Laves phase SmFe2, an amorphous SmFe2H3.6 (a-SmFe2H3.6) alloy was formed between 400 K and 500 K. The amorphous nature of the alloy was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and thermal analysis. However, SmFe2 absorbed hydrogen in the crystal state below 350 K and decomposed into SmH2 and α-Fe above 550 K. The crystallization behaviour of a-SmFe2H3.6 was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry in combination with electron microscopy. Even after considerable hydrogen desorption (Image ) by an endothermic reaction on heating, the amorphous state was retained. Crystallization of a-SmFe2H3.6 took place in two stages. The first stage involved the precipitation of α-Fe in the amorphous matrix. The second stage involved the decomposition of the remaining amorphous phase into the equilibrium phases SmH2 and SmFe2.

Current versus voltage characteristics (I-V) of nanocrystalline SnO2 materials have been investigated in air at room temperature. The samples were prepared by the inert gas condensation technique (IGCT) as well as by chemical methods. X-ray diffraction studies showed a tetragonal rutile structure for all the samples. Microstructural studies were performed with transmission electron microscopy. All the samples exhibited nonlinear I-V characteristics of the current-controlled negative resistance (CCNR) type. The results show that the threshold field (break down) voltage is higher for the samples prepared by the IGCT method than for those prepared by the chemical method due to the formation of a tin oxide layer over the crystalline tin. It is also found that the threshold field increases with the decrease in grain size.

Monophasic Na0.5La0.5Bi4Ti4O15 powders were synthesized via the conventional solid-state reaction route. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) studies carried out on the as synthesized powdered samples confirmed the phase to be a four-layer Aurivillius that crystallizes in an orthorhombic A2(1)am space group. The microstructure and the chemical composition of the sintered sample were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX). The dielectric properties of the ceramics have been studied in the 27-700 degrees C temperature range at various frequencies (100 Hz to 1 MHz). A sharp dielectric anomaly was observed at 580 degrees C for all the frequencies corresponding to the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition. Saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loops were observed at 200 degrees C and the associated remnant polarization (P-r) and coercive field (E-c) were found to be 7.4 mu C/cm(2) and 34.8 kV/cm, respectively. AC conductivity analysis confirmed the existence of two different conduction mechanisms in the ferroelectric region. Activation energies calculated from the Arrhenius plots were similar to 0.24 eV and similar to 0.84 eV in the 300-450 degrees C and 450-580 degrees C temperature ranges, respectively. The combustion technique produces ionically dispersed Ag on a nano-crystalline CeO2 surface. The catalysts thus produced were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Catalytic properties towards NO reduction, CO and hydrocarbon oxidation have been investigated using the temperature programmed reaction technique in a packed bed tubular reactor. These results are compared with alpha-Al2O3 supported finely divided Ag metal particles synthesized by the same method. Both oxidation and reduction reactions over Ag/CeO2 have been observed to occur at lower temperatures compared to Ag/Al2O3. The rate and turnover frequency of the NO+CO reaction over 1% Ag/CeO2 are 56.3 mu mol g(-1) s(-1) and 0.97 s(-1) at 225 degrees C respectively. Activation energy (E-a) values are 71 and 67 kJ mol(-1) for CO+O-2 and NO+CO reactions, respectively, over 1% Ag/CeO2 catalyst.

Molybdenum-doped TiO2 organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions by in situ surface modification using n-butylamine. This was carried out at 150 degrees C at autogeneous pressure over 18 h. n-Butylamine was selected as a surfactant since it produced nanoparticles of the desired size and shape. The products were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, dynamic light-scattering spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Chemical oxygen demand was estimated in order to determine the photodegradation efficiency of the molybdenum-doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles in the treatment of pharmaceutical effluents. It was found that molybdenum-doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles showed higher photocatalytic efficiency than untreated TiO2 nanoparticles.

Density measurements on large single-crystal specimens of La2NiO4+δ and Pr2NiO4+δ show that oxygen nonstoichiometry arises from the presence of excess lattice oxygen. X-ray photoelectron spectra as well as X-ray absorption edge studies provide no evidence for the existence of Ni3+ in these oxygen-excess nickelates under the conditions of the measurements. Transmission electron microscopy has revealed a novel type of exsolution process of the stoichiometric phase out of nonstoichiometric La2NiO4 during heating in CO2 at 870 K for 3 h. An interpretation of the results in terms of the existence of peroxide species within the conducting layers is proposed.

The microstructural evolution on aging a Co-3 wt pct Ti-2 wt pct Nb alloy has been followed by transmission electron microscopy and diffraction to show that the solid solution decomposed by the spinodal mode. The strengthening observed has been correlated with the differences in lattice parameters of the coexisting phases. The several stages of coarsening have been documented to yield information about their kinetics and morphological changes.Formerly Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1206 West Green Street, Urbana, IL 61801, is with .

Body-centered-tetragonal (BCT) ZnS nanocrystals have been synthesized, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, by using the chemical coprecipitation method at higher synthesis temperatures of 65 and 95 degrees C. It is confirmed from X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies that in the high-temperature-synthesized samples, cubic and BCT phases coexist, in contrast to the room-temperature-synthesized sample, which consists of only cubic phase with sizes of the particles lying between 2 and 3 nm. The sizes of BCT phase nanocrystals are bigger than those of cubic phase of ZnS. The presence of BCT phase of ZnS in the samples is increased from 40 to 90% when the temperature of synthesis is increased from 65 to 95 degrees C. The nanocrystalline nature and UV-Vis absorption characteristics of the prepared samples have been studied with a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and a UV-Visible pectrophotometer, respectively. The room-temperature-synthesized ZnS sample shows photoluminescence (PL) emission in the blue region with multiple peaks, whereas the high-temperature-synthesized samples show PL emissions in the visible region. The Gaussian fittings of the measured PL spectra shows that three PL peaks at 429, 477, and 525 nm are appeared in the 65 degrees C sample and two peaks at 491 and 540 nm appear in the 95 degrees C sample with the enhanced PL intensity of the green peak at 540 nm.
