In this study we have employed multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), decorated with platinum as catalytic layer for the reduction of tri-iodide ions in dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC). MWCNTs have been prepared by a simple one step pyrolysis method using ferrocene as the catalyst and xylene as the carbon source. Platinum decorated MWCNTs have been prepared by chemical reduction method. The as prepared MWCNTs and Pt/MWCNTs have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In combination with a dye adsorbed TiO(2) photoanode and an organic liquid electrolyte, Pt/MWCNT composite showed an enhanced short circuit current density of 16.12 mA/cm(2) leading to a cell efficiency of 6.50% which is comparable to that of Platinum. Diffuse optical tomography (DOT) using near-infrared (NIR) light is a promising tool for noninvasive imaging of deep tissue. This technique is capable of quantitative reconstructions of absorption coefficient inhomogeneities of tissue. The motivation for reconstructing the optical property variation is that it, and, in particular, the absorption coefficient variation, can be used to diagnose different metabolic and disease states of tissue. In DOT, like any other medical imaging modality, the aim is to produce a reconstruction with good spatial resolution and accuracy from noisy measurements. We study the performance of a phase array system for detection of optical inhomogeneities in tissue. The light transport through a tissue is diffusive in nature and can be modeled using diffusion equation if the optical parameters of the inhomogeneity are close to the optical properties of the background. The amplitude cancellation method that uses dual out-of-phase sources (phase array) can detect and locate small objects in turbid medium. The inverse problem is solved using model based iterative image reconstruction. Diffusion equation is solved using finite element method for providing the forward model for photon transport. The solution of the forward problem is used for computing the Jacobian and the simultaneous equation is solved using conjugate gradient search. The simulation studies have been carried out and the results show that a phase array system can resolve inhomogeneities with sizes of 5 mm when the absorption coefficient of the inhomogeneity is twice that of the background tissue. To validate this result, a prototype model for performing a dual-source system has been developed. Experiments are carried out by inserting an inhomogeneity of high optical absorption coefficient in an otherwise homogeneous phantom while keeping the scattering coefficient same. The high frequency (100 MHz) modulated dual out-of-phase laser source light is propagated through the phantom. The interference of these sources creates an amplitude null and a phase shift of 180° along a plane between the two sources with a homogeneous object. A solid resin phantom with inhomogeneities simulating the tumor is used in our experiment. The amplitude and phase changes are found to be disturbed by the presence of the inhomogeneity in the object. The experimental data (amplitude and the phase measured at the detector) are used for reconstruction. The results show that the method is able to detect multiple inhomogeneities with sizes of 4 mm. The localization error for a 5 mm inhomogeneity is found to be approximately 1 mm.

In this work composites of poly(3-hexylethiophene) (P3HT) and a thiophene derivative (7, 9-di (thiophen-2-yl)-8H-cyclopenta[a]acenaphthylen-8-one) (DTCPA) having donor acceptor architecture (DAD) were prepared. Photovoltaic properties of these hybrid composites were evaluated. DTCPA, which is a highly crystalline organic molecule with wide absorption range, was observed to improve the open circuit voltage of the solar cell. Furthermore, DTCPA crystals acts as a nucleating center and increases the molecular ordering of P3HT in the composite. Improved charge separation efficiency was observed by photoluminescence spectroscopy. Because of high built in potential in these devices, large open circuit voltage was observed. In this article, we describe our ongoing efforts in addressing the environment and energy challenges facing the world today. Tapping solar thermal energy seems to be the right choice for a country like India. We look at three solar-thermal technologies in the laboratory — water purification/distillation, Stirling engine, and air-conditioning/refrigeration.

The spectral photocurrent characteristics of two donor-acceptor diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based copolymers (PDPP-BBT and TDPP-BBT) blended with a fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) were studied using Fourier-transform photocurrent spectroscopy (FTPS) and monochromatic photocurrent (PC) method. PDPP-BBT: PCBM shows the onset of the lowest charge transfer complex (CTC) state at 1.42 eV, whereas TDPP-BBT: PCBM shows no evidence of the formation of a midgap CTC state. The FTPS and PC spectra of P3HT:PCBM are also compared. The larger singlet state energy difference of TDPP-BBT and PCBM compared to PDPP-BBT/P3HT and PCBM obliterates the formation of a midgap CTC state resulting in an enhanced photovoltaic efficiency over PDPP-BBT: PCBM. Interrogation techniques for fiber Bragg grating sensor arrays need particular attention in the case of structural health monitoring applications involving dynamic strain measurement. Typically the performance of the sensing system is dependent on both the sensor type and the interrogation method employed. A novel interrogation system is proposed here that consists of different interrogation units for each sensor in the array, each unit comprising of a circulator, chirped grating and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We present an analysis that consists of tracking the spectral changes as the light passes through various elements in the interrogation system. This is expected to help in the optimization of sensor and interrogation elements leading to improved performance of the health monitoring system.

Solar dynamo models based on differential rotation inferred from helioseismology tend to produce rather strong magnetic activity at high solar latitudes, in contrast to the observed fact that sunspots appear at low latitudes. We show that a meridional circulation penetrating below the tachocline can solve this problem.

This paper proposes a compact electric discharge plasma source for controlling NOX emission in diesel engine exhaust. Boost converter is used to boost to solar powered battery voltage to 24V, further an automobile ignition coil was used to generate the high voltage pulse using fly-back topology. This design is aimed at retrofitting the existing catalytic converters with pulse assisted cleaning technique. In this paper we bring out a relative comparison of discharge plasma and plasma-adsorbent process at different gas flow rates. Activated alumina was used as adsorbent. The main emphasis is laid on the development of a compact pulse source from 12V battery, which is powered by the solar, for the removal of NOX from the filtered diesel engine exhaust.

In the present study dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been fabricated with a tri-layer photo anode consisting of hydrothermally prepared titania nano tubes (TNT) having a diameter of 9-10 nm and length of several micrometers as outer layer, P25 TiO2 powder as transparent light absorbing middle layer and a compact TiO2 inner layer to improve the adhesion of different layers on a transparent conducting oxide coated substrate. In comparison to cells fabricated using TNTs or P25 alone, the tri-layer DSSCs exhibit an enhanced efficiency of 7.15% with a current density of 17.12 mA cm(-2) under AM 1.5 illumination. The enhancement is attributed to the light scattering generated by TNTs aggregates, reduction in electron transport resistance at the TiO2/dye/electrolyte interface and an improvement in electron life-time. The solar radiation flux at the earth's surface has gone through decadal changes of decreasing and increasing trends over the globe. These phenomena known as dimming and brightening, respectively, have attracted the scientific interest in relation to the changes in radiative balance and climate. Despite the interest in the solar dimming/brightening phenomenon in various parts of the world, south Asia has not attracted great scientific attention so far. The present work uses the net downward shortwave radiation (NDSWR) values derived from satellites (Modern Era Retrospective-analysis for Research and Applications, MERRA 2D) in order to examine the multi-decadal variations in the incoming solar radiation over south Asia for the period of 1979-2004. From the analysis it is seen that solar dimming continues over south Asia with a trend of -0.54 Wm(-2) yr(-1). Assuming clear skies an average decrease of -0.05 Wm(-2)yr(-1) in NDSWR was observed, which is attributed to increased aerosol emissions over the region. There is evidence that the increase in cloud optical depth plays the major role for the solar dimming over the area. The cloud optical depth (MERRA retrievals) has increased by 10.7% during the study period, with the largest increase to be detected for the high-level (atmospheric pressure P < 400 hPa) clouds (31.2%). Nevertheless, the decrease in solar radiation and the role of aerosols and clouds exhibit large monthly and seasonal variations directly affected by the local monsoon system, the anthropogenic and natural aerosol emissions. All these aspects are examined in detail aiming at shedding light into the solar dimming phenomenon over a densely populated area. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
