The concept of symmetry for passive, one-dimensional dynamical systems is well understood in terms of the impedance matrix, or alternatively, the mobility matrix. In the past two decades, however, it has been established that the transfer matrix method is ideally suited for the analysis and synthesis of such systems. In this paper an investigatiob is described of what symmetry means in terms of the transfer matrix parameters of an passive element or a set of elements. One-dimensional flexural systems with 4 × 4 transfer matrices as well as acoustical and mechanical systems characterized by 2 × 2 transfer matrices are considered. It is shown that the transfer matrix of a symmetrical system, defined with respect to symmetrically oriented state variables, is involutory, and that a physically symmetrical system may not necessarily be functionally or dynamically symmetrical.

Oxygen nonstoichiometry of three ternary oxides. YFeO3-delta, YFe2O4-alpha and Y3Fe5O12-theta. in the system Y-Fe-O was investigated as a function of oxygen partial pressure by thermogravimetry at high temperature. The defects responsible for nonstoichiometry were identified as oxygen vacancies for YFeO3-delta and YFe2O4-alpha although the manner of variation of nonstoichiometric parameter with oxygen partial pressure for these two oxides is quite different. Cation interstitials are the predominant defects in Y3Fe5O12-theta. Gibbs energies of formation of the three nonstoichiometric oxides were determined using solid-state electrochemical cells in the temperature range from 975 to 1475 K. YFe2O4-alpha was found to be stable only above 1391 K. Gibbs energies of formation of the three stoichiometric compounds from their component binary oxides were obtained by combining information from solid state cells with results of thermogravimetric analysis using the Gibbs-Duhem relation. The results can be summarized as: (1/2)Y2O3 + (1/2)Fe2O3 -> YFeO3;Delta G(f(ox))(O)(+/- 250)(J/mol) = 17, 126-8.263T (1/2)Y2O3 + FeO + (1/2)Fe2O3 -> YFe2O4;Delta G(f(ox))(O)(+/- 260)(J/mol) = -10,352-13.24T (3/2)Y2O3 + (5/2)Fe2O3 -> Y3Fe5O12;Delta G(f(ox))(O)(+/- 780)(J/mol) = -56, 647-31.091T. Phase relations in the system Nb-Rh-O at 1223 K were investigated by isothermal equilibration of eleven compositions and analysis of quenched samples using OM, XRD, SEM and EDS. The oxide phase in equilibrium with the alloy changes progressively from NbO to NbO2, NbO2.422 and Nb2O5-x with increasing Rh. Only one ternary oxide NbRhO4 with tetragonal structure (a=0.4708 nm and c=0.3017 nm) was detected. It coexists with Rh and Nb2O5. The standard Gibbs energy of formation of NbRhO4 from its component binary oxides measured using a solid-state electrochemical cell can be represented by the equation; Delta G(f,ox)(o)(J/mol) = -38,350 + 5.818 x T(+/- 96) Constructed on the basis of thermodynamic information of the various alloy and oxide phases are oxygen potential diagram for the system Nb-Rh-O at 1223 K and temperature-composition diagrams at constant partial pressures of oxygen.

Phase equilibrium experiments indicate that NdRhO3 is the only ternary oxide in the system Nd-Rh-O at 1273 K; it has orthorhombically-distorted perovskite structure. By employing a solid-state electrochemical cell incorporating calcia-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte, thermodynamic properties of NdRhO3 are determined. The standard Gibbs energy of formation of NdRhO3 from its component binary oxides in the temperature ranges from 900 to 1300 K can be expressed as: 1/2Rh(2)O(3) (ortho)+1/2Nd(2)O(3)(hex)=NdRhO3(ortho), Delta(f(o,x))G(0)/J mol(-1)( +/- 197) = - 66256+5.64 (T/K). The decomposition temperature of NdRhO3 computed from extrapolated thermodynamic data is 1803 (+/- 4) K in pure oxygen and 1692 (+/- 4) K in air at standard pressure. Oxygen partial pressure-composition diagram and three-dimensional chemical potential diagram at 1273 K are developed from thermodynamic data obtained in this study and auxiliary information from the literature. Equilibrium temperature-composition phase diagrams at constant oxygen partial pressures are also constructed. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Innovative bi-electrolyte solid-state cells incorporating single crystal CaF2 and composition-graded solid electrolyte (LaF3) y (CaF2) 1-y (y = 0 to 0.32) were used for measurement of the standard Gibbs energy of formation of hexagonal La0.885Al11.782O19 and cubic LaAlO3 from component binary oxides La2O3 and alpha-Al2O3 in the temperature range from 875 to 1175 K. The cells were designed based on experimentally verified relevant phase relations in the systems La2O3-Al2O3LaF3 and CaF2-LaF3. The results can be summarized as: 5.891 alpha-Al2O3 + 0.4425 La2O3 (A-rare earth)-> La0.885Al11.782O19 (hex), Delta G(f(ox))(degrees)(+/- 2005)/Jmol(-1) = -80982 + 7.313(T/K); 1/2 La2O3 (A-rare earth) + 1/2 a-Al2O3 -> LaAlO3 (cubic), Delta G(f(ox))(degrees)(+/- 2100)/Jmol(-1) = -59810 + 4.51(T/K). Electron probe microanalysis was used to ascertain the non-stoichiometric range of the hexaaluminate phase. The results are critically analyzed in the light of earlier electrochemical measurements. Several imperfections in the electrochemical cells used by former investigators are identified. Data obtained in the study for LaAlO3 are consistent with calorimetric enthalpy of formation and entropy derived from heat capacity data. Estimated are the standard entropy and the standard enthalpy of formation from elements of hexagonal La0.885Al11.782O19 and rhombohedral LaAlO3 at 298.15 K. c 2014 The Electrochemical Society. The isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system NiO-MgO-SiO2 at 1373 K is established, The tie lines between (NiXMg1-X)O solid solution with rock salt structure and orthosilicate solid solution (NiYMg1-Y)Si0.5O2 and between orthosilicate and metasilicate (NiZMg1-Z)SiO3 crystalline solutions are determined using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and lattice parameter measurement on equilibrated samples, Although the monoxides and orthosilicates of Ni and Mg form a continuous range of solid solutions, the metasilicate phase exists only for 0 < Z < 0.096, The activity of NiO in the rock salt solid solution is determined as a function of composition and temperature in the range of 1023 to 1377 K using a solid state galvanic cell, The Gibbs energy of mixing of the monoxide solid solution can be expressed by a pseudo-subregular solution model: Delta G(ex) = X(1 - X)[(-2430 + 0.925T)X + (-5390 + 1.758T)(1 - X)] J/mol, The thermodynamic data for the rock salt phase are combined with information on interphase partitioning of Ni and Mg to generate the mixing properties for the orthosilicate and the metasilicate solid solutions, The regular solution model describes the orthosilicate and the metasilicate solid solutions at 1373 K within experimental uncertainties, The regular solution parameter Delta G(ex)/Y(1 - Y) is -820 (+/-70) J/mol for the orthosilicate solid solution, The corresponding value for the metasilicate solid solution is -220 (+/-150) J/mol, The derived activities for the orthosilicate solid solution are discussed in relation to the intracrystalline ion exchange equilibrium between M1 and M2 sites. The tie line information, in conjunction with the activity data for orthosilicate and metasilicate solid solutions, is used to calculate the Gibbs energy changes for the intercrystalline ion exchange reactions, Combining this with the known data for NiSi0.5O2, Gibbs energies of formation of MgSi0.5O2, MgSiO3, and metastable NiSiO3 are calculated, The Gibbs energy of formation of NiSiO3, from its component oxides, is equal to 7.67 (+/-0.6) kJ/mol at 1373 K.

The liquid alloy was contained in an alumina crucible and saturated with MnAl sub 2+2x O sub 4+3x . The cell can be represented by Pt, W, (Co--Mn) + MnAl sub 2+2x O sub 4+3x + Al sub 2 O sub 3 /ThO sub 2 --Y sub 2 O sub 3 /Cr + Cr sub 2 O sub 3 , Pt. The activity of manganese shows negative deviations from Raoult's law. The activities in the Co--Mn system are intermediate between those in the Fe--Mn and Ni--Mn systems. Using isothermal equilibration, phase relations are established in the system Sm-Rh-O at 1273 K. SmRhO3 with GdFeO3-type perovskite structure is found to be the only ternary phase. Solid-state electrochemical cells, containing calcia-stabilized zirconia as an electrolyte, are used to measure the thermodynamic properties of SmRhO3 formed from their binary component oxides Rh2O3 (ortho) and Sm2O3 (C-type and B-type) in two different temperature ranges. Results suggest that C-type Sm2O3 with cubic structure transforms to B-type Sm2O3 with monoclinic structure at 1110 K. The standard Gibbs energy of transformation is . Standard Gibbs energy of formation of SmRhO3 from binary component oxides Rh2O3 and Sm2O3 with B-type rare earth oxide structure can be expressed as . Three independent studies have been reported on the free energy of formation of NiWO4. Results of these measurements are analyzed by the third-law method, using thermal functions for NiWO4 derived from both low and high temperature heat capacity measurements. Values for the standard molar enthalpy of formation of NiWO4 at 298·15 K obtained from third-law analysis are compared with direct calorimetric determinations. Only one set of free energy measurements is found to be compatible with calorimetric enthalpies of formation. The selected value for ?f H m 0 (NiWO4, cr, 298·15 K) is the average of the three calorimetric measurements, using both high temperature solution and combustion techniques, and the compatible free energy determination. A new set of evaluated data for NiWO4 is presented.

The compounds Pb2PtO4 and PbPt2O4 were synthesized from an intimate mixture of yellow PbO and Pt metal powders by heating under pure oxygen gas at 973 K for periods up to 600 ks with intermediate grinding and recompacting. Both compounds were found to decompose on heating in pure oxygen to PbO and Pt, apparently in conflict with the requirements for equilibrium phase relations in the ternary system Pb–Pt–O. The oxygen chemical potential corresponding to the three-phase mixtures, Pb2PtO4 + PbO + Pt and PbPt2O4 + PbO + Pt were measured as a function of temperature using solid-state electrochemical cells incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at 0.1 MPa pressure as the reference electrode. The standard Gibbs free energies of formation of the ternary oxides were derived from the measurements. Analysis of the results indicated that the equilibrium involving three condensed phases Pb2PtO4 + PbO + Pt is metastable. Under equilibrium conditions, Pb2PtO4 should have decomposed to a mixture of PbO and PbPt2O4. Measurement of the oxygen potential corresponding to this equilibrium decomposition as a function of temperature indicated that decomposition temperature in pure oxygen is 1014(±2) K. This was further confirmed by direct determination of phase relations in the ternary Pb–Pt–O by equilibrating several compositions at 1023 K for periods up to 850 ks and phase identification of quenched samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Only one ternary oxide PbPt2O4 was stable at 1023 K under equilibrium conditions. Alloys and intermetallic compounds along the Pb–Pt binary were in equilibrium with PbO.

The standard Gibbs free energies of formation of CuAlO2 and CuAl2O4 were determined in the range 700° to 1100°C, using emf measurements on the galvanic cells (1) Pt,CuO +] Cu2O/CaO-ZrO2/O2,Pt; (2) Pt,Cu +] CuAlO2+] Al2O3/CaO-ZrO2/ Cu +] Cu2O,Pt; and (3) Pt,CuAl2O4+] CuAlO2+]Al2O3/CaO-ZrO2/O2,Pt. The results are compared with published information on the stability of these compounds. The entropy of transformation of CuO from tenorite to the rock-salt structure is evaluated from the present results and from earlier studies on the entropy of formation of spinels from oxides of the rock-salt and corundum structures. The temperatures corresponding to 3-phase equilibria in the system Cu2O-CuO-Al2O3 at specified O2 pressures calculated from the present results are discussed in reference to available phase diagrams.

The standard Gibbs free energy of formation of magnesium and cadmiumchromites have been determined by potentiometric measurements on reversiblesolid-state electrochemical cells [dformula (Au-5%Cd, , Au-5%Cd; Pt, + , CaO-ZrO[sub 2], + ,Pt; CdO, , CdCr[sub 2]O[sub 4] + Cr[sub 2]O[sub 3])] in the temperature range 500°–730°C, and [dformula Pt, Cr + Cr[sub 2]O[sub 3]/Y[sub 2]O[sub 3]-ThO[sub 2]/Cr + MgCr[sub 2]O[sub 4] + MgO, Pt] in the temperature range 800°–1200°C. The temperature dependence of the freeenergies of formation of the ternary compounds can be represented by theequations [dformula CdO(r.s.) + Cr[sub 2]O[sub 3](cor) --> CdCr[sub 2]O[sub 4](sp)] [dformula Delta G[sup 0] = - 42,260 + 7.53T ([plus-minus]400) J] and [dformula MgO(r.s.) + Cr[sub 2]O[sub 3](cor) --> MgCr[sub 2]O[sub 4](sp)] [dformula Delta G[sup 0] = - 45,200 + 5.36T ([plus-minus]400) J] The entropies of formation of these spinels are discussed in terms of cationdisorder and extent of reduction of Cr3+ ions to Cr2+ ions. Thermodynamicdata on the chromates of cadmium and magnesium are derived by combiningthe results obtained in this study with information available in the literatureon high temperature, high pressure phase equilibria in the systems CdO-Cr2O3-O2 and MgO-Cr2O3-O2.

The chemical potentials of CaO in two-phase fields (TiO2 + CaTiO3), (CaTiO3 + Ca4Ti3O10), and (Ca4Ti3O10 + Ca3Ti2O7) of the pseudo-binary system (CaO + TiO2) have been measured in the temperature range (900 to 1250) K, relative to pure CaO as the reference state, using solid-state galvanic cells incorporating single crystal CaF2 as the solid electrolyte. The cells were operated under pure oxygen at ambient pressure. The standard Gibbs free energies of formation of calcium titanates, CaTiO3, Ca4Ti3O10, and Ca3Ti2O7, from their component binary oxides were derived from the reversible e.m.f.s. The results can be summarised by the following equations: CaO(solid) + TiO2(solid) → CaTiO3(solid), ΔG° ± 85/(J · mol−1) = −80,140 − 6.302(T/K); 4CaO(solid) + 3TiO2(solid) → Ca4Ti3O10(solid), ΔG° ± 275/(J · mol−1) = −243,473 − 25.758(T/K); 3CaO(solid) + 2TiO2(solid) → Ca3Ti2O7(solid), ΔG° ± 185/(J · mol−1) = −164,217 − 16.838(T/K). The reference state for solid TiO2 is the rutile form. The results of this study are in good agreement with thermodynamic data for CaTiO3 reported in the literature. For Ca4Ti3O10 Gibbs free energy of formation obtained in this study differs significantly from that reported by Taylor and Schmalzried at T = 873 K. For Ca3Ti2O7 experimental measurements are not available in the literature for direct comparison with the results obtained in this study. Nevertheless, the standard entropy for Ca3Ti2O7 at T = 298.15 K estimated from the results of this study using the Neumann–Koop rule is in fair agreement with the value obtained from low-temperature heat capacity measurements.

Using a solid-state electrochemical technique, thermodynamic properties of three sulfide phases (RhS0.882, Rh3S4, Rh2S3) in the binary system (Rh + S) are measured as a function of temperature over the range from (925 to 1275) K. Single crystal CaF2 is used as the electrolyte. The auxiliary electrode consisting of (CaS + CaF2) is designed in such a way that the sulfur chemical potential converts into an equivalent fluorine potential at each electrode. The sulfur potentials at the measuring electrodes are established by the mixtures of (Rh + RhS0.882), (RhS0.882 + Rh3S4) and (Rh3S4 + Rh2S3) respectively. A gas mixture (H-2 + H2S + Ar) of known composition fixes the sulfur potential at the reference electrode. A novel cell design with physical separation of rhodium sulfides in the measuring electrode from CaS in the auxiliary electrode is used to prevent interaction between the two sulfide phases. They equilibrate only via the gas phase in a hermetically sealed reference enclosure. Standard Gibbs energy changes for the following reactions are calculated from the electromotive force of three cells: 2.2667Rh (s) + S-2 (g) -> 2.2667RhS(0.882) (s), Delta(r)G degrees +/- 2330/(J . mol(-1)) = -288690 + 146.18 (T/K), 4.44RhS(0.882) (s) + S-2 (g) -> 1.48Rh(3)S(4) (s), Delta(r)G degrees +/- 2245/(J . mol(-1)) = -245596 + 164.31 (T/K), 4Rh(3)S(4) (s) + S-2 (g) -> 6Rh(2)S(3) (s), Delta(r)G degrees +/- 2490/(J . mol(-1)) = -230957 + 160: 03 (T/K). Standard entropy and enthalpy of formation of rhodium sulfides from elements in their normal standard states at T = 298.15 K are evaluated. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
