The random direction short Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics (GFRP) have been prepared by two compression moulding processes, namely the Preform and Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) processes. Cutting force analysis and surface characterization are conducted on the random direction short GFRPs with varying fiber contents (25 similar to 40%). Edge trimming experiments are preformed using carbide inserts with varing the depth of cut and cutting speed. Machining characteristics of the Preform and SMC processed random direction short GFRPs are evaluated in terms of cutting forces, surface quality, and tool wear. It is found that composite primary processing and fiber contents are major contributing factors influencing the cutting force magnitudes and surface textures. The SMC composites show better surface finish over the Preform composites due to less delamination and fiber pullouts. Moreover, matrix damage and fiber protrusions at the machined edge are reduced by increasing fiber content in the random direction short GFRP composites.

Cryogel matrices composed of different polymeric blends were synthesized, yielding a unique combination of hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity with the presence or absence of charged surface. Four such cryogel matrices composed of polyacrylamide-chitosan (PAAC), poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-chitosan, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) were tested for growth of different hybridoma cell lines and production of antibody in static culture. All the matrices were capable for the adherence of hybridoma cell lines 6A4D7, B7B10, and H9E10 to the polymeric surfaces as well as for the efficient monoclonal antibody (mAb) production. PAAC proved to be relatively better in terms of both mAb production and cell growth. Further, PAAC cryogel was designed into three different formats, monolith, disks, and beads, and used as packing material for packed-bed bioreactor. Longterm cultivation of 6A4D7 cell line on PAAC cryogel scaffold in all the three formats could be successfully done for a period of 6 weeks under static conditions. Continuous packed-bed bioreactor was setup using 6A4D7 hybridoma cell line in the three reactor formats. The reactors ran continuously for a period of 60 days during which mAb production and metabolism of cells in the bioreactors were monitored periodically. The monolith bioreactor performed most efficiently over a period of 60 days and produced a total of 57.5 mg of antibody in the first 30 days (in 500 mL) with a highest concentration of 115 mu g mL(-1), which is fourfold higher than t-flask culture. The results demonstrate that appropriate chemistry and geometry of the bioreactor matrix for cell growth and immobilization can enhance the reactor productivity. The mechanical properties of composites of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) with two-dimensional graphene-like boron nitride (BN) have been investigated to explore the dependence of the properties on the number of BN layers. This study demonstrates that significantly improved mechanical properties are exhibited by the composite with the fewest number of BN layers. Thus, with incorporation of three BN layers, the hardness and elastic modulus of the composite showed an increase of 125% and 130%, respectively, relative to pure PMMA. (C) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. The paper is based on a study to develop carbon-glass epoxy hybrid composites with desirable thermal properties for applications at cryogenic temperatures. It analyzes the coefficient of thermal expansion of carbon-epoxy and glass-epoxy composite materials and compares it with the properties of carbon-glass epoxy hybrid composites in the temperature range 300 K to 125K. Urethane modified epoxy matrix system is used to make the composite specimens suitable for use even for temperatures as low as 20K. It is noted that the lay-up with 80% of carbon fibers in the total volume fraction of fibers oriented at 30 degrees and 20% of glass fibers oriented at 0 degrees yields near to zero coefficient of thermal expansion as the temperature is lowered from ambient to 125 K. Fe/AlOOH gels calcined and reduced at different temperatures have been investigated by a combined use of Mossbauer spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy in order to obtain information on the nature of the iron species formed as well as the various reduction processes. Calcination at or below 1070 K mainly gives reducible Fe3+ while calcination at higher temperatures gives substitutional Fe3+ in the form of Al2-xFexO3. The Fe3+ species in the calcined samples are, by and large, present in the form of small superparamagnetic particles. Crystallization of Al2O3 from the gels is catalyzed by Fe2O3 as well as FeAl2O4. Fe (20 wt. %)/AlOOH gels calcined at or below 870 K give FeAl2O4 when reduced in hydrogen at 1070 K or lower and a ferromagnetic Fe0-Al2O3 composite (with the metallic Fe particles >100 angstrom) when reduced at 1270 K. Samples calcined at 1220 K or higher give the Fe0-Al2O3 composite when reduced in the 870-12,70 K range, but a substantial proportion of Fe3+ remains unreduced in the form of Al2-xFexO3, showing thereby the extraordinary stability of substitutional Fe3+ to reduction even at high temperatures. Besides the ferromagnetic Fe0-Al2O3 composite, high-temperature reduction of Al2-xFexO3 yields a small proportion of superparamagnetic Fe0-Al2O3 wherein small metallic particles (<100 angstrom) are embedded in the ceramic matrix. In order to preferentially obtain the Fe0-Al2O3 composite on reduction, Fe/AlOOH gels should be calcined at low temperatures (less-than-or-equal-to 1100 K); high-temperature calcination results in Al2-xFexO3. Several modes of formation of FeAl2O4 are found possible during reduction of the gels, but a novel one is that involving the reaction, 2Fe3+ + Fe0 --> 3Fe2+.

Polymeric compositions containing Al-Mg alloys show higher reactivities, in comparison with similar compositions containing aluminium. This is observed irrespective of the amount of oxidizer, type of oxidizer used, type of polymeric binder, and over a range of the particle sizes of the metal additive. This is evident from the higher calorimetric values obtained for compositions containing the alloy, in comparison to samples containing aluminium. Analysis of the combustion residue shows the increase in calorimetric value to be due to the greater extent of oxidation of the alloy. The interaction between the polymeric binder and the alloy was studied by coating the metal particles with the polymer by a coacervation technique. On ageing in the presence of ammonium perchlorate, cracking of the polymer coating on the alloy was noticed. This was deduced from differential thermal analysis experiments, and confirmed by scanning electron microscopic observations. The increase in stiffness of the coating, leading to cracking, has been traced to the cross-linking of the polymer by magnesium.

The moisture absorption and changes in compression strengths in glass-epoxy (G-E composites without and with discrete quantities of graphite powders introduced into the resin mix prior to its spreading on specific glass fabric (layers) during the lay-up (stacking) sequence forms the subject matter of this report. The results point to higher moisture absorption for graphite bearing specimens. The strengths of graphite-free coupons show a continuous decrease, while the filler bearing ones show an initial rise followed by a drop for larger exposure times. Scanning Fractographic features were examined for an understanding of the process. The observations were explained invoking the effect of matrix plasticizing and the role of interfacial regions.

Al2O3-SiC-(Al,Si) cermets are fabricated using the melt oxidation route. The tribological properties of the composites are tested under adhesive sliding and two body abrasion conditions. Under adhesive conditions, the network of residual aluminium in the matrix plays a role in the formation of a thin tribofilm on the interface while in abrasion the hardness of the composite plays a prominent tribological role. The work suggests that microstructural control can make this low temperature composite competitive with the conventional high temperature monolithic ceramics. Particulate composites based on polymer matrices generally contain fillers, especially those that are abundantly available and are cheaper. The inclusion of these, besides improving the properties, makes the system costwise viable, In the present study, fly ash was tried as a filler in epoxy. The filler particle surfaces were modified using three chemical surface treatment techniques in order to elicit the effect of adhesion at the interface on the mechanical properties of these composites. The compatibilizing of the filler with the use of a silane coupling agent yielded the best compression strength values. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) has been used to characterize and supplement the mechanical test data.

Particulate reinforcements for polymers are selected with dual objective of improving composite properties and save on the total cost of the system. In the present study fly ash, an industrial waste with good properties is used as filler in epoxy and the compressive properties of such composites are studied. Particle surfaces are treated chemically using a silane-coupling agent to improve the compatibility with the matrix. The compressive properties of these are compared with those made of untreated fly ash particulates. Furthermore properties of fly ash composites with two different average particle sizes are first compared between themselves and then with those made using the as-received bimodal nature of particle size distribution. Microscopic observations of compression tested samples revealed a better adherence of the particles with the matrix in case of treated particles and regards the size effect the composites with lower average particle size showed improved strength at higher filler contents. Experimental values of strengths and modulii are compared with some of the theoretical models for composite properties. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Composite ionic conductors based on magnesium salts and sol-gel derived silicate-tetraethylene glycol hybrids have been synthesized. The structure of these materials has been studied by FT-IR, FT-Raman, Si-29 and C-13 NMR and XRD techniques. The composite systems can be best described as diphasic with silicate as filters in the organic phase that provides solubility of the ionic dispersants. The ionic interactions in the matrix are clearly observed in the FT-Raman spectra. The ionic conductivity is determined to be of the order of 10(-7) to 10(-5) S cm(-1) at room temperature for MgCl2 and Mg(ClO4)(2) salts respectively. The conductivity reaches 10(-4) and 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 80degreesC respectively.

In this paper, we report the results pretaining to the study of the structural, microstructural and the dielectric properties of poly(I-lithocholic acid) (PL), and the composite of PL dispersed in PMMA. The density of the composites was measured using Archimedes principle. The microstructural properties of the composities were studied using XRD and SEM techniques, which give an idea about the dispersion of the polymer PL in the PMMA matrix. The dielectric constants er of the composites were measured with a HP 4194A Impedance/Gain-Phase Analyzer in the frequency range 100 Hz-40 MHz at room temperature. The dielectric constants of the composites at different frequencies were predicted using Clasius-Mossotti and Maxwell's models.

The influence of residual oxygen in nitrogen on the formation of AlN-Al matrix by reactive infiltration has been investigated. Increasing the oxygen content from 10 ppm upwards decreased the nitride content in the matrix from 64 to 6%, Based on the analysis of the availability of oxygen at the Al-melt/gas interface, three distinct scenarios have been proposed (i) at lowest values, oxygen does not interfere with either infiltration or nitridation reaction; (ii) at intermediate values, nitridation is suppressed, however infiltration continues; and (iii) at a critical upper value, the melt passivates without any infiltration. This phenomenon offers control of the AlN/Al ratio in the matrix and the possibility of creation of microstructural gradierits by the appropriate choice of gas mixtures. Epoxy systems containing HTBN rubber material and reinforced with E-glass fibres, exposed to a fixed time duration in three separate media were subjected to compressive mode of deformation. The yield stress and fractographic features noted on the compression failed samples are reported in this work. The experiment reveals that the seawater exposed sample exhibits a drop in strength compared to dry (unexposed) sample. This kind of drop is maintained if the media is changed from seawater to distilled water. When HCl is included in seawater. the experiment shows a small rise in strength value. These changes have been attributed to various factors like medium ingress into samples assisting interface failure, the larger-sized Cl- influencing the extent of diffusion of medium into system and finally their participation in the deformation phenomena. The fractographic features reveal interface separations that show either scattered debris or a cleaner surface or display a whitish-coated matrix region depending on whether the tests are done on unexposed samples or on ones following the immersion in the media.

Polymer composites are generally filled with either fibrous or particulate materials to improve the mechanical properties. In choosing the fillers one looks for materials that are inexpensive and available in abundance, in order to realize a cost reduction also. Also, often these fibres/fillers are treated to improve the matrix adhesion and thereby mechanical properties. The present study is focussed on the influence of water ingression in such filler-modified composites and the attendant changes in the compressive properties. The changes in property effected following exposure to aqueous media and the influence interface modification has on the scenario is emphasized in the work. It is seen that for plain epoxy and fly ash filled systems the strengths are increased following exposure to aqueous media. The composites with surface-treated ash particles, on the other hand, record a drop in the values. Modulus values show are increased to varying degree in unfilled and filled systems. The study also includes a fractographic analysis of the tested samples with and without exposure to water.
