Controlled pyrolysis of Al(OBus)(3), Zr(OPrn)(4) and their mixtures in ethyl acetate induced using microwaves of 2.45 GHz frequency has been carried out. Microwave irradiation yields second-stage precursors for the preparation of respective oxides and their composites. It is observed that the microwave irradiation has a directive influence on the morphology of the ultimate oxide products. Al2O3, ZrO2 and the two composites 90% Al2O3-10% ZrO2 and 90% ZrO2-10% Al2O3 are also found to be sintered to very high densities within 35 min of microwave irradiation by the use of beta-SiC as a secondary susceptor.

The selenium analogue of antithyroid drug methimazole (MSeI) reacts with molecular bromine to produce two different types of novel complexes depending upon the molar ratio of MSeI to Br-2 in the reaction medium: Dicationic diselenide complex with two Br- ions as counterions is produced in the reaction of MSeI with 0.5 equiv of Br-2 (MSeI/Br-2, 1.0:0.5), whereas a stable 10-Se-3 hypervalent ``T-shaped'' complex featuring a linear Br-Se-Br moiety was produced when MSeI was treated with Br-2 in an equimolar ratio (MSeI/Br-2, 1.0:1.0). A substitution at the free N-H group in MSeI alters its reactivity toward iodine/bromine. For example, the N,N-disubstituted selones exclusively produce the corresponding 10-Se-3 hypervalent ``T-shaped'' complexes in the reaction with I-2. In the presence of the lectoperoxidase/H2O2/I- system, N,N-dimethylimidazole-2-selone produces the corresponding dicationic diselenide with two I- counterions as the final metabolite. The formation of ionic species in these reactions is confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and in some cases by Fourier transform-Raman spectroscopic investigations.

We describe the synthesis and structural characterization of new layered bismuth titanates, A[Bi3Ti4O13] and A[Bi3PbTi5O16]for A = K, Cs, corresponding to n = 4 and 5 members of the Dion-Jacobson series of layered perovskites of the general formula, A[A'n-1BnO3n+1]. These materials have been prepared by solid state reaction of the constituents containing excess alkali, which is required to suppress the formation of competitive Aurivillius phases. Unlike the isostructural niobates and niobium titanates of the same series, the new phases reported here are spontaneously hydrated-a feature which could make them potentially useful as photocatalysts for water splitting reaction. On hydration of the potassium compounds, the c axis expands by ca. 2 Angstrom and loses its doubling [for example, the tetragonal lattice parameters of K[Bi3Ti4O13] and its dihydrate are respectively a = 3900(1)Angstrom c 37.57(2) Angstrom; a 3.885(1) Angstrom, c = 20.82(4) Angstrom]; surprisingly, the cesium analogues do not show a similar change on hydration.

A series of binuclear Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes were synthesized by the template condensation of glyoxal, biacetyl or benzil bis-hydrazide, 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol and Co(11), Ni(II) or Cu(II) chloride in a 2:2:2 M ratio in ethanol. These 22-membered macrocyclic complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic, molar conductance, spectral, thermal and fluorescence studies. Elemental analyses suggest the complexes have a 2:1 stoichiometry of the type (M2LX2]center dot nH(2)O and Ni(2)LX(2)2H(2)O]center dot nH(2)O (where M = Co(II) and Cu(II); L = H2L1, H2L2 and H2L3; X = Cl; n = 2). From the spectroscopic and magnetic studies, it has been concluded that the Co(11) and Cu(11) complexes display a five coordinated square pyramidal geometry and the Ni(II) complexes have a six coordinated octahedral geometry. The Schiff bases and their metal complexes have also been screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities by the MIC method. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A multifunctional iron oxide based nanoformulation for combined cancer-targeted therapy and multimodal imaging has been meticulously designed and synthesized using a chemoselective ligation approach. Novel superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles simultaneously functionalized with amine, carboxyl, and azide groups were fabricated through a sequence of stoichiometrically controllable partial succinylation and Cu (II) catalyzed diazo transfer on the reactive amine termini of 2-aminoethylphosphonate grafted magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs). Functional moieties associated with MNP surface were chemoselectively conjugated with rhodamine B isothiocyanate (RITC), propargyl folate (FA), and paclitaxel (PTX) via tandem nucleophic addition of amine to isothithiocyanates, Cu (I) catalyzed azide-alkyne click chemistry and carbodiimide-promoted esterification. An extensive in vitro study established that the bioactives chemoselectively appended to the magnetite core bequeathed multifunctionality to the nanoparticles without any loss of activity of the functional molecules. Multifunctional nanoparticles, developed in the course of the study, could selectively target and induce apoptosis to folate-receptor (FR) overexpressing cancer cells with enhanced efficacy as compared to the free drug. In addition, the dual optical and magnetic properties of the synthesized nanoparticles aided in the real-time tracking of their intracellular pathways also as apoptotic events through dual fluorescence and MR-based imaging.

We study phase transitions in the colossal-magnetoresistive manganites by using a mean-field theory both at zero and non-zero temperatures. Our Hamiltonian includes double-exchange, superexchange, and Hubbard terms with on-site and nearest-neighbour Coulomb interaction, with the parameters estimated from earlier density-functional calculations. The phase diagrams show magnetic and charge-ordered (or charge-disordered) phases as a result of the competition between the double-exchange, superexchange, and Hubbard terms, the relative effects of which are sensitively dependent on parameters such as doping, bandwidth, and temperature. In accord with the experimental observations, several important features are reproduced from our model, namely, (i) a phase transition from an insulating, charge-ordered antiferromagnetic to a metallic, charge-disordered ferromagnetic state near dopant concentration x = 1/2, (ii) the reduction of the transition temperature TAF-->F by the application of a magnetic field, (iii) melting of the charge order by a magnetic field, and (iv) phase coexistence for certain values of temperature and doping. An important feature, not reproduced in our model, is the antiferromagnetism in the electron-doped systems, e.g., La1-xCaxMnO3 over the entire range of 0.5 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1, and we suggest that a multi-band model which includes the unoccupied t(2g) orbitals might be an important ingredient for describing this feature.

A bacterial strain belonging to the genus Bacillus isolated by enrichment culture technique using morphine as a sole source of carbon transforms morphine and codeine into 14-hydroxymorphinone and 14-hydroxycodeinone as major and 14-hydroxymorphine and 14-hydroxycodeine as minor metabolites, respectively. When the N-methyl group in morphine and codeine are replaced by higher alkyl groups, the organism still retains its ability to carry out 14-hydroxylation as well as oxidation of the C-6-hydroxyl group in these N-variants, although the level of metabolites formed are considerably low. The organism readily transforms dihydromorphine and dihydrocodeine into only dihydromorphinone and dihydrocodeinone, respectively; suggesting that the 7,8-double bond is a necessary structural feature to carry out 14-hydroxylation reaction. The cell free extract (20,000 x g supernatant), prepared from morphine grown cells, transforms morphine into 14-hydroxymorphinone in the presence of NAD(+), but fails to show activity against testosterone. However, the cell free extract prepared from testosterone grown cells contains significant levels of 17 beta- hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase but shows no activity against morphine.

In this work, the synthesis of an oligothiophene having a donor acceptor donor (D-A-D) chromophore with hydrogen bonding groups is described. The D-A-D molecule was demonstrated to self-organize via intermolecular H-bonding between barbituric acid units. Interactions between the oligothiophene subunits were also found to be important, affording nanoribbons that could be observed by atomic force and transmission electron microscopy. The applicability of the oligothiophene for organic electronic applications was investigated by fabricating organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaic devices. The OFET measurements yielded p-type mobility of 7 x 10(-7) cm(2)/(Vs), and when blended with C(60)-PCBM, the photovoltaic efficiency was observed to be 0.18%.

The equilibrium solubilities of dihydroxy benzene isomers (resorcinol and pyrocatechol) and its mixture were experimentally determined at different temperatures (308, 318, 328, and 338 K) in the pressure range of 9.8-16.2 MPa. In the ternary system, the solubilities of pyrocatechol increased while the solubilities of resorcinol decreased relative to their binary solubilities. A new association model was developed based on the concept of formation of solvate complex molecules to correlate the solubility of the solid for mixed solids in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO(2)). The model equation relates the solubility of solute in terms of the cosolute composition, temperature, pressure and density of SCCO(2). The proposed model correlated the solubilities of sixteen solid systems taken from the literature and current experimental data with an average absolute relative deviation (AARD) of around 4%. Copolymers of o-lm-toluidine with o-lm-amino benzoic acid have been synthesized by chemical polymerization using inverse emulsion pathway and characterized by a number of techniques including UV-Vis, FT-IR, FT Raman, EPR and NMR spectroscopies, thermal analysis and conductivity. The solubility of the copolymers in organic solvents increases with increase in the amount of amino benzoic acid in the feed. The copolymers synthesized at room temperature show relatively higher conductivity and are obtained in higher yield compared to those synthesized at 0 and 60 degreesC. The spectral studies have revealed restricted conjugation along the polymer chain. The effect of -COOH substituent on the copolymer structure is discussed. Oligoarabinofuranoside-containing glycolipids relevant to mycobacterial cell wall components were synthesized in order to understand the functional roles of such glycolipids. A series of linear tetra-, hexa-, octa-and a branched heptasaccharide oligoarabinofuranosides, with 1 -> 2 and 1 -> 5 a-linkages between the furanoside residues, were synthesized by chemical methods from readily available monomer building blocks. Upon the synthesis of glycolipids, constituted with a double alkyl chain-substituted sn-glycerol core and oligosaccharide fragments, biological studies were performed to identify the effect of synthetic glycolipids on the biofilm formation and sliding motilities of Mycobacterium smegmatis. Synthetic glycolipids and arabinofuranosides displayed an inhibitory effect on the growth profile, but mostly on the biofilm formation and maturation. Similarly, synthetic compounds also influenced the sliding motility of the bacteria. Further, biophysical studies were undertaken, so as to identify the interactions of the glycolipids with a pulmonary surfactant protein, namely surfactant protein A (SP-A), with the aid of the surface plasmon resonance technique. Specificities of each glycolipid interacting with SP-A were thus evaluated. From this study, glycolipids were found to exhibit higher apparent association constants than the corresponding oligosaccharide portion alone, without the double alkyl group-substituted glycerol core.

Palladium and platinum dichloride complexes of a series of symmetrically and unsymmetrically substituted 25,26;27,28-dibridged p-tert-butyl-calix[4]arene bisphosphites in which two proximal phenolic oxygen atoms of p-tert-butyl-or p-H-calix[4]arene are connected to a P(OR) ( R = substituted phenyl) moiety have been synthesized. The palladium dichloride complexes of calix[4]arene bisphosphites bearing sterically bulky aryl substituents undergo cyclometalation by C-C or C-H bond scission. An example of cycloplatinated complex is also reported. The complexes have been characterized by NMR spectroscopic and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. During crystallization of the palladium dichloride complex of a symmetrically substituted calix[4]arene bisphosphite in dichloromethane, insertion of oxygen occurs into the Pd-P bond to give a P,O-coordinated palladium dichloride complex. The calix[4]arene framework in these bisphosphites and their metal complexes adopt distorted cone conformation; the cone conformation is more flattened in the metal complexes than in the free calix[4]arene bisphosphites. Some of these cyclometalated complexes proved to be active catalysts for Heck and Suzuki C-C cross-coupling reactions but, on an average, the yields are only modest. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Yttrium oxide (Y(2)O(3)) thin films were deposited by microwave electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma assisted metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) process using indigenously developed metal organic precursors Yttrium 2,7,7-trimethyl-3,5-octanedionates, commonly known as Y(tod)(3) which were synthesized by an ultrasound method. A series of thin films were deposited by varying the oxygen flow rate from 1-9 sccm, keeping all other parameters constant. The deposited coatings were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, glancing angle X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Thickness and roughness for the films were measured by stylus profilometry. Optical properties of the coatings were studied by the spectroscopic ellipsometry. Hardness and elastic modulus of the films were measured by nanoindentation technique. Being that microwave ECR CVD process is operating-pressure-sensitive, optimum oxygen activity is very essential for a fixed flow rate of precursor, in order to get a single phase cubic yttrium oxide in the films. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first effort that describes the use of Y(tod)(3) precursor for deposition of Y(2)O(3) films using plasma assisted CVD process.

Synthesis and structure of new (Bi, La)(3)MSb(2)O(11) phases (M = Cr, Mn, Fe) are reported in conjunction with their magnetic and photocatalytic properties. XRD refinements reflect that Bi(3)CrSb(2)O(11), Bi(2)LaCrSb(2)O(11), Bi(2)LaMnSb(2)O(11) and Bi(2)LaFeSb(2)O(11) adopt KSbO(3)-type structure (space group, Pn (3) over bar). The structure can be described through three interpenetrating networks where the first is the (M/Sb)O(6) octahedral network and other two are the identical networks having Bi(6)O(4) composition. The magnetic measurements on Bi(2)LaCrSb(2)O(11) and Bi(2)LaMnSb(2)O(11) show paramagnetic behaviour with magnetic moments close to the expected spin only magnetic moments of Cr(+3) and Mn(+3). The UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectra are broad and indicate that these materials possess a bandgap of similar to 2 eV. The photocatalytic activity of these materials has been investigated by degrading Malachite Green (MG) under exposure to UV light.
