In this work, we explore simultaneous design and material selection by posing it as an optimization problem. The underlying principles for our approach are Ashby's material selection procedure and structural optimization. For the simplicity and ease of initial implementation of the general procedure, truss structures under static load are considered in this work in view of maximum stiffness, minimum weight/cost and safety against failure. Along the lines of Ashby's material indices, a new design index is derived for trusses. This helps in choosing the most suitable material for any design of a truss. Using this, both the design space and material database are searched simultaneously using optimization algorithms. The important feature of our approach is that the formulated optimization problem is continuous even though the material selection is an inherently discrete problem.

Substrate temperature and ion bombardment during deposition have been observed to modify significantly the optical and structural properties of dielectric thin films. Single‐layer films of CeO2 have been deposited by electron beam evaporation with simultaneous oxygen‐ion bombardment using a Kaufman broad beam ion source and maintaining the substrates at elevated temperature. A systematic study has been made on the influence of (a) substrate temperature in the range ambient to 300 °C, (b) ion energy in the range 300–700 eV, and (c) ion current density 100–220 μA/cm2 on optical properties such as refractive index, extinction coefficient, inhomogeneity, packing density, and structural properties. The refractive index increased with in increase in substrate temperature: ion energy up to 600 eV and ion current density. Homogeneous, absorption free and high index (2.48) films have been obtained at 600 eV, 220 μA/cm2 and at substrate temperature of 300 °C. The packing density of the films was observed to be unity for the same deposition conditions. Substrate temperature with simultaneous ion bombardment modified the structure of the films from highly ordered to fine grain structure.

In a cooperative relay-assisted communication system that uses rateless codes, packets get transmitted from a source to a destination at a rate that depends on instantaneous channel states of the wireless links between nodes. When multiple relays are present, the relay with the highest channel gain to the source is the first to successfully decode a packet from the source and forward it to the destination. Thus, the unique properties of rateless codes ensure that both rate adaptation and relay selection occur without the transmitting source or relays acquiring instantaneous channel knowledge. In this paper, we show that in such cooperative systems, buffering packets at relays significantly increases throughput. We develop a novel analysis of these systems that combines the communication-theoretic aspects of cooperation over fading channels with the queuing-theoretic aspects associated with buffering. Closed-form expressions are derived for the throughput and end-to-end delay for the general case in which the channels between various nodes are not statistically identical. Corresponding results are also derived for benchmark systems that either do not exploit spatial diversity or do not buffer packets. Altogether, our results show that buffering - a capability that will be commonly available in practical deployments of relays - amplifies the benefits of cooperation.

In the present work, we report the growth of wurtzite InN epilayers on GaN/Si (1 1 1) substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). The growth parameters such as indium flux, substrate temperature and RF power affect the crystallographic and morphological properties of InN layers, which were evaluated using high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) analysis and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is found that excess indium (In) concentrations and surface roughness were increased with increase in In flux and growth temperature. The intensity of HRXRD (0 0 0 2) peak, corresponding to c-axis orientation has been increased and full width at half maxima (FWHM) has decreased with increase in RF power. It was found that highly c-axis oriented InN epilayers can be grown at 450 degrees C growth temperature, 450 W RF power and 1.30 x 10(-7) mbar In beam equivalent pressure (BEP). The energy gap of InN layers grown by optimizing growth conditions was determined by photoluminescence and optical absorption measurement. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Aqueous solutions of Al and Mg nitrates have been spray pyrolysed at 673 K to synthesize powders with compositions varying between MgO and MgAl2O4. This has been carried out with the aim of studying phase selection and phase evolution in this system. The powders have been subsequently heat treated and the sequence of phases characterised by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Metastable extensions of the different phase fields have been calculated based on functions which predict the equilibrium phase diagram accurately. The appearance of phases is closely related to the temperature and to the non-stoichiometry in different compositional ranges of the system. The sequence of phase evolution has been correlated to the thermodynamics of nucleation in the system.

This paper reports the studies conducted on removal of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from diesel engine exhaust using electrical discharge plasma combined with adsorbing materials such as molecular sieves. This study is being reported for the first time. The exhaust is taken from a diesel engine of 6 kW under no load conditions. The characteristic behavior of a pulse energized dielectric barrier discharge reactor in the diesel exhaust treatment is reported. The NOx removal was not significant (36%) when the reactor without any packing was used. However, when the reactor was packed with molecular sieves (MS -3A, -4A & -13X), the NOx removal efficiency was increased to 78% particularly at a temperature of 200 °C. The studies were conducted at different temperatures and the results were discussed.

A plasma-assisted catalytic reactor was used to remove nitrogen oxides (NOx) from diesel engine exhaust operated under different load conditions. Initial studies were focused on plasma reactor (a dielectric barrier discharge reactor) treatment of diesel exhaust at various temperatures. The nitric oxide (NO) removal efficiency was lowered when high temperature exhaust was treated using plasma reactor. Also, NO removal efficiency decreased when 45% load exhaust was treated. Studies were then made with plasma reactor combined with a catalytic reactor consisting of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst, V2O5/TiO2. Ammonia was used as a reducing agent for SCR process in a ratio of 1:1 to NOx. The studies were focused on temperatures of the SCR catalytic reactor below 200°C. The plasma-assisted catalytic reactor was operated well to remove NOx under no-load and load conditions. For an energy input of 96 J/l, the NOx removal efficiencies obtained under no-load and load conditions were 90% and 72% respectively at an exhaust temperature of 100°C.

This paper presents a methodology for selection of static VAR compensator location based on static voltage stability analysis of power systems. The analysis presented here uses the L-index of load buses, which includes voltage stability information of a normal load flow and is in the range of 0 (no load of system) to 1 (voltage collapse). An approach has been presented to select a suitable size and location of static VAR compensator in an EHV network for system voltage stability improvement. The proposed approach has been tested under simulated conditions on a few power systems and the results for a sample radial network and a 24-node equivalent EHV power network of a practical system are presented for illustration purposes. © 2000 Published by Elsevier Science S.A. A hydrothermal reaction of a mixture of cobalt salt, 5-nitro isophthalic acid and triazole (compound I), 3-aminotriazole (3-AT) (compound II) and 3,5-diaminotriazole (compound III) at 220 degrees C for a day resulted in the isolation of three different, but related, compounds containing cobalt clusters. The three-dimensional compounds have Co-5 (compound-I) and Co-4 (compound-II and compound-III) clusters connected through the carboxylate and triazolate forming structures with pcu net (compound-I and compound-II) and a graphite-related net (compound-III). The water molecules (coordinated and lattice) can be readily re-adsorbed by the structure of compound-I, whereas the removal of the water molecule leads to a collapse of the structures of compound-II and compound-III. The TGA studies suggest the possibility of an intermediate structure for compound-1, which was investigated using in situ single crystal to single crystal (SCSC) transformations. The identification of an intermediate structure during the dehydration/hydration cycle in compound-I is important and provides important pointers about the dynamics of the water molecules in these compounds. Compound-I was also investigated in detail using a variety of spectroscopic techniques such as IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy etc. Magnetic studies on the synthesized compounds indicate anti-ferromagnetic behavior.

In this paper, enhanced fluorescence from a silver film coated nanosphere templated grating is presented. Initially, numerical simulation was performed to determine the plasmon resonance wavelength by varying the thickness of the silver film on top of a monolayer of 400 nm nanospheres. The simulation results are verified experimentally and tested for enhancing fluorescence from fluorescein isothiocyanate whose excitation wavelength closely matches with the plasmon resonance wavelength of the substrate with 100 nm silver film over nanosphere. The 12 times enhancement in the intensity is attributed to the local field enhancement in addition to the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons along the surface.

The n-type GaN layers were grown by plasma-assisted MBE and either intentionally doped with Si or unintentionally doped. The optical characteristics of a donor level in Si-doped, GaN were studied in terms of photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy as a function of electron concentration. Temperature dependent PL measurements allowed us to estimate the activation energy of a Si-related donor from temperature-induced decay of PL intensity. PL peak positions, full width at half maximum of PL and activation energies are found to be proportional to the cube root of carrier density. The involvement of donor levels is supported by the temperature-dependent electron concentration measurements. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ultra thin films of pure beta-Si3N4 (0001) were grown on Si (111) surface by exposing the surface to radio- frequency nitrogen plasma with a high content of nitrogen atoms. Using beta-Si3N4 layer as a buffer layer, GaN epilayers were grown on Si (111) substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The valence band offset (VBO) of GaN/beta-Si3N4/ Si heterojunctions is determined by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The VBO at the beta-Si3N4 /Si interface was determined by valence-band photoelectron spectra to be 1.84 eV. The valence band of GaN is found to be 0.41 +/- 0.05 eV below that of beta-Si3N4 and a type-II heterojunction. The conduction band offset was deduced to be similar to 2.36 eV, and a change of the interface dipole of 1.29 eV was observed for GaN/ beta-Si3N4 interface formation. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. A Monte Carlo model of ultrasound modulation of multiply scattered coherent light in a highly scattering media has been carried out for estimating the phase shift experienced by a photon beam on its transit through US insonified region. The phase shift is related to the tissue stiffness, thereby opening an avenue for possible breast tumor detection. When the scattering centers in the tissue medium is exposed to a deterministic forcing with the help of a focused ultrasound (US) beam, due to the fact that US-induced oscillation is almost along particular direction, the direction defined by the transducer axis, the scattering events increase, thereby increasing the phase shift experienced by light that traverses through the medium. The phase shift is found to increase with increase in anisotropy g of the medium. However, as the size of the focused region which is the region of interest (ROI) increases, a large number of scattering events take place within the ROI, the ensemble average of the phase shift (Delta phi) becomes very close to zero. The phase of the individual photon is randomly distributed over 2 pi when the scattered photon path crosses a large number of ultrasound wavelengths in the focused region. This is true at high ultrasound frequency (1 MHz) when mean free path length of photon l(s) is comparable to wavelength of US beam. However, at much lower US frequencies (100 Hz), the wavelength of sound is orders of magnitude larger than l(s), and with a high value of g (g 0.9), there is a distinct measurable phase difference for the photon that traverses through the insonified region. Experiments are carried out for validation of simulation results.
