The magnetic susceptibilities of a large number of ternary oxides of copper having structural features common to the presently identified phases of high-temperature superconductors have been studied in the temperature range 14-300 K. The systems studied are Ln2CuOP( Ln = La, Pr, Nd, etc.), Sr2CuO2CI2,B i2Cu0,, Ca2Cu03,S r2Cu03,S rCu02, MgCu203,B a2Cu3O4CI2Y, 2Cu205,Y2BaCu0,, BaCu02, Li2Cu02, etc. Cu2+ ions take different coordinations, like isolated square planar, square pyramidal or distorted-tetrahedral and octahedral, in these compounds. These compounds also exhibit different varieties of possible magnetic superexchange interactions like 180' or 90' Cu-0-Cu or Cu-0-0-Cu types as well as direct Cu-Cu interactions. Compounds in which there are extended 180' Cu-0-Cu interactions show a low, nearly temperature-independent susceptibility (100 X lod emu/mol). The estimated value of J for the Cu-0-Cu interaction is between 800 and 1500 K in these compounds. Isolated Cu2+ ions in which there are no 180' or close to 180" Cu-0-Cu interactions show Curie-Weiss susceptibility behavior. Compounds with only Cu-0-0-Cu interaction show evidence for the onset of antiferromagnetic coupling between 30 and 50 K. The superexchange rules are useful for explaining the qualitative features of the results. The possibility of disproportionation of Cu2+ ion when there are short Cu-Cu distances as in Bi2Cu04 is discussed. The extended geometry of the copper-oxygen framework seems to be more important than the local geometry around the Cu2+ ion in determining the magnetic properties.

The d.c. conductivity of phosphomolybdate and phosphotungstate glasses is discussed. The conductivity of these glasses is due to the hopping of electrons between two valence states (Mo5+ to Mo6+ or W5+ W6+). In some of the glasses, the activation energy itself is found to be a function of temperature. This appears to be due to thermally activated and variable-range hopping mechanisms operating in different temperature regimes. The relation between conductivity and the [M5+]/[Mtotal](M ≡ Mo, W) ratio does not show any systematic variation. This anomaly can be understood using the structural models of these glasses. In contrast, Mott's theory and the Triberis and Friedman model have been used to obtain conductivity parameters such as the percolation distance Rij and 2agrRij (agr is the tunnelling probability). The conductivity parameter 2agrRij is quite useful to resolve the controversy regarding the tunnelling term exp(2agrRij) existing in the literature. For low values of 2agrRij, it is shown that the exp (2agrRij) term is very significant.

High density Mn-Zr ferrites have been extensively used in recording head applications. The properties like permeability, los~, etc., depend on the preparation method. The :roperfies play major role in selecting these materials for various applications. In this present work., we have prepared Mn-Zn ferrites musing metal hydrazine carboxylate precursors (N2Hs)3Mn0.sZn0.sFe2(N2H3COO)3"3H20. The precursor decomposes at very low temperature (~250°C) to form ultrafine Mno.sZn0.sFe204. The partic~,e size permeability spectrum, microstructure and magnetic properties will be discussed in this paper.

Research on structure and magnetic properties of polynuclear metal complexes to understand the structural and chemical factors governing the electronic exchange coupling mediated by multi-atom bridging ligands is of growing interest. Hydrothermal treatment of Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O with N-(4-carboxyphenyl)iminodiacetic acid N-4(H(3)CPIDA)] at 150 degrees C yielded a 3D coordination polymer of general formula Ni-3{N-4( CPIDA)}(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 6H(2)O (1). An analogous network of general formula Co-3{N-3(CPIDA)}(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 3H(2)O (2) was synthesized using N-(3-carboxyphenyl) iminodiacetic acid N-3(H(3)CPIDA)] in combination with Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O under identical reaction condition. Both the complexes contain trinuclear secondary building unit, and crystallized in monoclinic system with space groups C2/c (1) and P2(1)/c (2), respectively. Variable temperature magnetic characterization of these complexes in the temperature range of 2-300 K indicated the presence of overall ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic behavior for 1 and 2, respectively. Density functional theory calculations (B3LYP functional) were performed for further insight on the trinuclear units to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation on the overall magnetic behavior of the complexes 1 and 2. The magnetic properties of the layered compounds FePS3, NiPS3 and the mixed system Fe1-xNixPS3 have been investigated. All the compounds show a maximum in chi at a temperature T(max) followed by the onset of antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures at T(N). As the composition is changed there is a continuous change in T(N) and in the ratio T(N)/T(max). Our results , show that in the mixed antiferromagnetic system Fe1-xNixPS3, the strongly antiisotropic Fe component imposes its anisotropy on the weakly anisotropic Ni component. We find also no frustration or spin-glass-like ordering at any composition.

Strontium-doped lanthanum chromites, La1−xSrxCrO3, have been synthesised to investigate the effect of strontium doping on the stability and physico-chemical characteristics of the perovskite LaCrO3. Both microscopic and X-ray examinations show that the materials exist as single phase perovskite structure for all compositions up to 50 mole% strontium substitution. The materials have been further characterized by infrared and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra. These materials show a good sinterability even in air at 1773 K. Electrical conductivity of thse perovskites has been measured as a function of temperature. Electrical conductivity has been found to be a maximum at x=0.2. The observed electrical and magnetic properties are consistent with activated polaron transport as the mechanism for electrical conduction in these materials.

A detailed study of the layered manganite La1+xSr2-xMn2O7 has been performed, establishing that within the composition range 0.1 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.45 the phases crystallize in the I4/mmm space group. The evolution of structural parameters with x: in this composition range has been followed using a novel application of an existing program for the Rietveld analysis of powder diffraction data. The structure, a familiar intergrowth of rock-salt (La,Sr)O slabs and double perovskite (La,Sr)(2)Mn2O6 units, is characterized by a reluctance to deform the latter. This manifests as a ''pumping'' of the larger Sr-II ion into the 12-coordinate site of the structure as x is increased. We report these features of the structure as well as electrical transport and magnetic properties, in light of recent observations of giant, negative magnetoresistance in these systems.

Ordered double perovskite oxides of the general formula A2BB′O6 have been known for several decades to have interesting electronic and magnetic properties. However, a recent report of a spectacular negative magnetoresistance effect in a specific member of this family, namely Sr2FeMoO6, has brought this class of compounds under intense scrutiny. It is now believed that the origin of the magnetism in this class of compounds is based on a novel kinetically-driven mechanism. This new mechanism is also likely to be responsible for the unusually high temperature ferromagnetism in several other systems, such as dilute magnetic semiconductors, as well as in various half-metallic ferromagnetic systems, such as Heussler alloys.

We present the magnetic properties of polycrystalline Dy1−xSrxMnO3 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) with an orthorhombic (o) crystal structure. The parent compound, o-DyMnO3, undergoes an incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering of the Mn spins at 39 K, followed by a spiral order at 18 K. A further antiferromagnetic transition at 5 K marks an ordering of the Dy-sublattice. Doping of divalent Sr ions results in diverse magnetization phenomena. The zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) magnetization curves display the presence of strongly interacting magnetic sublattices. For x = 0.1 and 0.2, a bifurcation between the ZFC and FC magnetization sets in at around 30 and 32 K, respectively. The ZFC magnetization peaks at about 5 K, indicating antiferromagnetic Dy-couplings similar to the case of o-DyMnO3. For x = 0.3, clear signatures of ferrimagnetism and strong anisotropy are found, including negative magnetization. The compound with x = 0.4 behaves as a spin glass, similar to Dy0.5Sr0.5MnO3.

Combining experiments with first-principles calculations, we show that site-specific doping of Mn into SrTiO(3) has a decisive influence on the dielectric properties of these doped systems. We find that phonon contributions to the dielectric constant invariably decrease sharply on doping at any site. However, a sizable, random dipolar contribution only for Mn at the Sr site arises from a strong off-centric displacement of Mn in spite of Mn being in a non-d(0) state; this leads to a large dielectric constant at higher temperatures and gives rise to a relaxor ferroelectric behavior at lower temperatures. We also investigate magnetic properties in detail and critically reevaluate the possibility of a true multiglass state in such systems.

The magnetic properties of iron-filled multi-walled carbon nanotubes dispersed in polystyrene (Fe-MWNT/PS) have been investigated as a function of Fe-MWNT concentration (0.1-15 wt%) from 300 to 10 K. Electron microscopy studies indicate that Fe nanorods (aspect ratio similar to 5) remain trapped at various lengths of MWNT and are thus, prevented from oxidation as well as aggregation. The magnetization versus applied field (M-H loop) data of 0.1 wt% of Fe-MWNTs in PS show an anomalous narrowing at low temperatures which is due to the significant contribution from shape anisotropy of Fe nanorods. The remanence shows a threshold feature at 1 wt%. The enhanced coercivity shows a maximum at 1 wt% due to the dominant dipolar interactions among Fe nanorods. Also the squareness ratio shows a maximum at 1 wt%.

Multiferroic nanoparticles (NPs) of pristine and Ca, Ba co-doped BiFeO3 were synthesized by a facile sal gel route. Co-doping was done by fixing the total dopant concentration at 5 mol% and then the relative concentrations of Ca and Ba was varied. Structural, optical and magnetic properties of the NPs were investigated using different techniques. UV-Vis absorption spectra of BiFeO3 NPs showed a substantial blue shift of similar to 100 nm (530 nm -> 430 nm) on Ca. Ba co-doping which corresponds to increase in band gap by 0.5 eV. Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy confirmed that iron is present only in 3(+) valence state in all co-doped samples. The coercive field increased by 18 times for Bi0.95Ca0.01Ba0.04FeO3 samples, which is the maximum enhancement, observed amongst all the 5 mol% doped samples. At the equimolar (2.5 mol % each) concentration of co-dopants, the coercive field shows a significant enhancement of about 9 times (220 Oe -> 2014 Oe) with concomitant increase in saturation magnetization by 7 times. Thus, equimolar co-doping causes simultaneous enhancement of the twin aspects of magnetic properties thereby making them better suited for device applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. We studied structural and magnetic properties of a series of insulating double perovskite compounds, La2-xSrxCuRuO6 (0 <= x <= 1), representing doping via A-site substitution. The end members La2CuRuO6 and LaSrCuRuO6 form in monoclinic structure while the intermediate Sr doped compounds stabilize in triclinic structure. The Cu and Ru ions sit on alternate B sites of the perovskite lattice with similar to 15% antisite defects in the undoped sample while the Sr-doped samples show a tendency to higher ordering at B sites. The undoped (x = 0) compound shows a ferrimagnetic-like behavior at low temperatures. In surprising contrast to the usual expectation of an enhancement of ferromagnetic interaction on doping, an antiferromagnetic-like ground state is realized for all doped samples (x > 0). Heat capacity measurements indicate the absence of any long-range magnetic order in any of these compounds. The magnetic relaxation and memory effects observed in all compounds suggest glassy dynamical properties associated with magnetic disorder and frustration. We show that the observed magnetic properties are dominated by the competition between the nearest-neighbor Ru-O-Cu 180 degrees superexchange interaction and the next-nearest-neighbor Ru-O-O-Ru 90 degrees superexchange interaction as well as by the formation of antisite defects with interchanged Cu and Ru positions. Our calculated exchange interaction parameters from first principles calculations for x = 0 and x = 1 support this interpretation.

The present work demonstrates a novel strategy to synthesize orthogonally bio-engineered magnetonanohybrids (MNPs) through the design of versatile, biocompatible linkers whose structure includes: (i) a robust anchor to bind with metal-oxide surfaces; (ii) tailored surface groups to act as spacers and (iii) a general method to implement orthogonal functionalizations of the substrate via ``click chemistry''. Ligands that possess the synthetic generality of features (i)-(iii) are categorized as ``universal ligands''. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel, azido-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) silane that can easily self-assemble on MNPs through hetero-condensation between surface hydroxyl groups and the silane end of the ligand, and simultaneously provide multiple clickable sites for high density, chemoselective bio-conjugation. To establish the universal-ligand-strategy, we clicked alkyl-functionalized folate onto the surface of PEGylated MNPs. By further integrating a near-infrared fluorescent (NIRF) marker (Alexa-Fluor 647) with MNPs, we demonstrated their folate-receptor mediated internalization inside cancer cells and subsequent translocation into lysosomes and mitochondria. Ex vivo NIRF imaging established that the azido-PEG-silane developed in course of the study can effectively reduce the sequestration of MNPs by macrophage organs (viz. liver and spleen). These folate-PEG-MNPs were not only stealth and noncytotoxic but their dual optical and magnetic properties aided in tracking their whereabouts through combined magnetic resonance and optical imaging. Together, these results provided a strong motivation for the future use of the ``universal ligand'' strategy towards development of ``smart'' nanohybrids for theragnostic applications.

Uniform La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (LSMO) nanotubes of an average diameter 180 nm were synthesized by a modified sol-gel method employing nanochannel porous anodic alumina templates. The nanotubes were characterized chemically and structurally by XRD, SEM, EDX, and TEM. Postannealed (700 degrees C for 1 h hour) nanotubes were found to be polycrystalline from XRD and SAED studies. To get further insight into the nanotube structure, HRTEM studies were done, which revealed that obtained LSMO nanotubes were structurally constituted with nanoparticles of 3-12 nm size. These constituent nanoparticles were randomly aligned and self-knitted to build the nanotube wall. Investigation of magnetic properties at this structured nanoscale revealed remarkable irreversibility between the zero field cooling (ZFC) and field cooling (FC) magnetization curves accompanied with a peak in the ZFC curve indicating spin-glass-like behavior. Structural defects and compositional variations at surfaces and grain-boundaries of constituent nanoparticles might be responsible for this anomalous magnetic behavior.
