Bilayer thin films of Te/As(2)S(3) were prepared from Te and As(2)S(3) by thermal technique under high vacuum. Optical constants were calculated by analysing the transmission spectrum in the spectral range 400-1100 nm. The optical band gap decreases with the addition of Te to As(2)S(3). The decrease of optical band gap has been explained on the basis of density of states and the increase in disorder in the system. We have irradiated the as-deposited films using a diode pumped solid state laser of 532 nm wavelength to study photo-diffusion of Te into As(2)S(3). The changes were characterised by Fourier Transform Infrared and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The optical band gap is found to be decreased with the light irradiation which is proposed due to homopolar bond formation. The core level peaks in XPS spectra give information about different bond formation. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The term Structural Health Monitoring has gained wide acceptance in the recent pastas a means to monitor a structure and provide an early warning of an unsafe conditionusing real-time data. Utilization of structurally integrated, distributed sensors tomonitor the health of a structure through accurate interpretation of sensor signals andreal-time data processing can greatly reduce the inspection burden. The rapidimprovement of the Fiber Bragg Grating sensor technology for strain, vibration andacoustic emission measurements in recent times make them a feasible alternatives tothe traditional strain gauges transducers and conventional Piezoelectric sensors usedfor Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM).Optical fiber-based sensors offers advantages over conventional strain gauges, PVDFfilm and PZT devices in terms of size, ease of embedment, immunity fromelectromagnetic interference(EMI) and potential for multiplexing a number ofsensors. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility of Fiber BraggGrating sensor and compare its utility with the conventional strain gauges and PVDFfilm sensors. For this purpose experiments are being carried out in the laboratory on acomposite wing of a mini air vehicle (MAV). In this paper, the results obtained fromthese preliminary experiments are discussed.

We propose and demonstrate a technique for electrical detection of polarized spins in semiconductors in zero applied magnetic fields. Spin polarization is generated by optical injection using circularly polarized light which is modulated rapidly using an electro-optic cell. The modulated spin polarization generates a weak time-varying magnetic field which is detected by a sensitive radio-frequency coil. Using a calibrated pickup coil and amplification electronics, clear signals were obtained for bulk GaAs and Ge samples from which an optical spin orientation efficiency of 4.8% could be determined for Ge at 1342 nm excitation wavelength. In the presence of a small external magnetic field, the signal decayed according to the Hanle effect, from which a spin lifetime of 4.6 +/- 1.0 ns for electrons in bulk Ge at 127 K was extracted.

An experimental setup has been realized to measure weak magnetic moments which can be modulated at radio frequencies (similar to 1-5 MHz). Using an optimized radio-frequency (RF) pickup coil and lock-in amplifier, an experimental sensitivity of 10(-15) Am(2) corresponding to 10(-18) emu has been demonstrated with a 1 s time constant. The detection limit at room temperature is 9.3 x 10(-16) Am(2)/root Hz limited by Johnson noise of the coil. The setup has been used to directly measure the magnetic moment due to a small number (similar to 7 x 10(8)) of spin polarized electrons generated by polarization modulated optical radiation in GaAs and Ge. Scanning tunneling microscopy was used to study the surface nanostructure of the epitaxial film Nd2/3Sr1/3MnO3 that shows giant magnetoresistance. The surface morphology of the film consists of a number of overlapping platelets of about 3035 diameter that grow at an angle of 3545 to the surface normal. The peak to peak height of the platelets are multiples of the caxis lattice parameter of 7.85 showing that the growth of the platelets takes place by the layer by layer addition of one formula unit. The mean surface roughness is about 10 . In the range of a few microns the film exhibits no defects or dislocations. The film is unstable in ambient atmosphere and tends to get covered by an adsorbate layer. Tipsurface interactions cause the adsorbate to be dislodged exposing the surface nanostructure. The degradation of the film in real time when imaged in air was recorded. The adsorbates increase the surface roughness of the film.

An optimal composition of La0.67Cd0.33MnO3 was synthesized by ceramic route. The compound crystallized in a rhombohedral structure with lattice parameters a = 5.473(4) and = 6037. Resistivity measurement showed an insulator-to-metal transition coupled with a ferromagnetic transition of around 255 K. Epitaxial thin films were fabricated on the LaAlO3 (100) substrate by a pulsed laser deposition technique. The psuedocubic lattice parameter a of the film is 3.873(4) . The insulator-to-metal transition of the film was observed at 250 K which is comparable with the bulk value. The film was ferromagnetic below this temperature. Magnetoresistance defined as R/R0 = (RHR0)/R0 was over 86% near the insulator-to-metal transition temperature of 240 K at 6 T magnetic field and over-30% at relatively low fields of 1 T. No magnetoresistance was observed at low temperatures in the film unlike in the polycrystalline sample, where about a 40% decrease in resistance was observed on applying 6 T magnetic field due to the spin dependent scattering at the grain boundaries.

This letter investigates the influence of a corrugated gate on the transfer characteristics of thin-film transistors. Corrugations that run parallel to the length of the channel from source to drain are patterned on the gate. The author finds that these corrugations result in higher currents as compared to conventional planar-gate transistors.

We have synthesized La0.83Na0.11MnO2.93 by heating La2O3 and MnCO3 in NaCl melt at 900C. The exact composition was arrived by analyzing each ion by an independent chemical method. The compound crystallized in a rhombohedral structure and showed an insulator-to-metal transition at 290 K. Epitaxial thin films were fabricated on LaAlO3 (100) using a pulsed laser deposition technique. The film also showed an insulator-to-metal transition at 290 K. Magnetoresistance [R/R0 = (RHR0)/R0] was 71% near the insulator-to-metal transition temperature of 290 K at 6 T magnetic field.

Pulse retardation method of Breit and Tuve has been modified to record continuously the equivalent height as well as the intensity of reflections from the ionosphere. Synchronized pulses are transmitted, and the received ground pulse and the reflected pulses, after amplification and suitable distortion, are applied to the focusing cylinder of a cathode ray tube the horizontal deflecting plates of which are connected to a synchronized linear time base circuit. The pattern on the screen is composed of a bright straight line corresponding to the time base with dark gaps corresponding to the received pulses. The distance between the initial points of the gaps represents retardation while the widths of the gaps correspond to the intensity of the pulses. The pattern is photographed on a vertically moving film. One of the first few records taken at Bangalore on 4 megacycles is reproduced. It shows, among other things, that the less retarded component of magneto-ionic splitting from the F layer is present most of the time. Whenever the longer retardation component does occur, it has stronger intensity than the former. Towards the late evening hours, just before disappearing, when the F layer rises and exhibits magnetoionic splitting, the intensity of the less retarded component is extremely low compared with the other component.

In this paper we report a systematic study of low-frequency 1/f resistance fluctuation in a metal film at different stages of electromigration. The resistance fluctuation (noise) measurement was carried out in presence of a dc electromigration stressing current. We observe that in addition to the increase in the spectral power SV(f), the frequency dependence of the spectral power changes as the electromigration process progresses and the exponent starts to change from 1 to higher value closer to 1.5. We interpret this change in as arising due to an additional contribution to the spectral power with a 1/f3/2 component, which starts to contribute as the electromigration process progresses. This additional component SV(f) 1/f3/2 has been suggested to originate from long range diffusion that would accompany any electromigration process. The experimental observation finds support in a model simulation, where we also find that the enhancement of noise during electromigration stressing is accompanied by a change in spectral power frequency dependence.

A highly transparent all ZnO thin film transistor (ZnO-TFT) with a transmittance of above 80% in the visible part of the spectrum, was fabricated by direct current magnetron sputtering, with a bottom gate configuration. The ZnO-TFT with undoped ZnO channel layers deposited on 300 nm Zn0.7Mg0.3O gate dielectric layers attains an on/off ratio of 104 and mobility of 20cm2/Vs. The capacitance-voltage (CV) characteristics of the ZnO-TFT exhibited a transition from depletion to accumulation with a small hysteresis indicating the presence of oxide traps. The trap density was also computed from the Levinsons plot. The use of Zn0.7Mg0.3O as a dielectric layer adds additional dimension to its applications. The room temperature processing of the device depicts the possibility of the use of flexible substrates such as polymer substrates. The results provide the realization of transparent electronics for next-generation optoelectronics.

Homogeneous thin films of Sr(0.6)Ca(0.4)TiO(3) (SCT40) and asymmetric multilayer of SrTiO(3) (STO) and CaTiO(3) (CTO) were fabricated on Pt/Ti/SiO(2)/Si substrates by using pulsed laser deposition technique. The electrical behavior of films was observed within a temperature range of 153 K-373 K. A feeble dielectric peak of SCT40 thin film at 273 K is justified as paraelectric to antiferroelectric phase transition. Moreover, the Curie-Weiss temperature, determined from the epsilon'(T) data above the transition temperature is found to be negative. Using Landau theory, the negative Curie-Weiss temperature is interpreted in terms of an antiferroelectric transition. The asymmetric multilayer exhibits a broad dielectric peak at 273 K. and is attributed to interdiffusion at several interfaces of multilayer. The average dielectric constants for homogeneous Sr(0.6)Ca(0.4)TiO(3) films (similar to 650) and asymmetric multilayered films (similar to 350) at room temperature are recognized as a consequence of grain size effect. Small frequency dispersion in the real part of the dielectric constants and relatively low dielectric losses for both cases ensure high quality of the films applicable for next generation integrated devices.
