Spin valves have revolutionized the field of magnetic recording and memory devices. Spin valves are generally realized in thin film heterostructures, where two ferromagnetic (FM) layers are separated by a nonmagnetic conducting layer. Here, we demonstrate spin-valve-like magnetoresistance at room temperature in a bulk ferrimagnetic material that exhibits a magnetic shape memory effect. The origin of this unexpected behavior in Mn2NiGa has been investigated by neutron diffraction, magnetization, and ab initio theoretical calculations. The refinement of the neutron diffraction pattern shows the presence of antisite disorder where about 13% of the Ga sites are occupied by Mn atoms. On the basis of the magnetic structure obtained from neutron diffraction and theoretical calculations, we establish that these antisite defects cause the formation of FM nanoclusters with parallel alignment of Mn spin moments in a Mn2NiGa bulk lattice that has antiparallel Mn spin moments. The direction of the Mn moments in the soft FM cluster reverses with the external magnetic field. This causes a rotation or tilt in the antiparallel Mn moments at the cluster-lattice interface resulting in the observed asymmetry in magnetoresistance.

Silver selenide thin films of thickness between 80 nm and 160 nm were prepared by thermal evaporation technique at a high vacuum better than 2x10(-5)mbar on well cleaned glass substrates at a deposition rate of 0.2 nm/sec. Silver selenide thin films were polycrystalline with orthorhombic structure. Ellipsometric spectra of silver selenide thin films have been recorded in the wavelength range between 300 nm and 700 nm. Optical constants like refractive index, extinction coefficient, absorption coefficient, and optical band gap of silver selenide thin film have been calculated from the recorded spectra. The refractive index of silver selenide has been found to vary between 1.9 and 3.2 and the extinction coefficient varies from 0.5 to 1.6 with respect to their corresponding thickness of the films. Transmittance spectra of these films have been recorded in the wavelength range between 300 nm and 900 nm and its spectral data are analysed. The photoluminescence studies have been carried out on silver selenide thin films and the strong emission peak is found around 1.7 eV. The calculated optical band of thermally evaporated silver selenide thin films is found to be around 1.7 eV from their Ellipsometric, UV-Visible and Photoluminescence spectroscopic studies.

Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON), the widely used solid electrolyte for thin film microbatteries, is not compatible with the ambient humid temperatures. The reasons for reduction in ionic conductivity of LiPON thin films from 2.8 x 10(-6) Scm(-1) to 9.9 x 10(-10) Scm(-1) when exposed to air are analyzed with the aid of AC impedance measurements, SEM, XPS and stylus profilometry. Initially, particulate-free film surfaces obtained soon after rf sputter deposition in N-2 ambient conditions becomes covered with microstructures, forming pores in the film when exposed to air. LiPON films are deposited on Ti coated silicon in addition to bare silicon, ruling out the possibility of stress-related rupturing from the LiPON/Si interface. The reduction of nitrogen, phosphorus, and increased presence of lithium, oxygen and carbon over the film surface lowers the ionic conductivity of LiPON films when exposed to air. The HOMO-LUMO gaps have been estimated in a graphite-like sp(2) carbon network with a progressive increase in the fraction of sp(3) carbons, taking into account several possible structural alternatives for each composition. The gap is shown to increase exponentially with the fraction of sp(3) carbons. Accordingly, the gap in a diamond-like sp(3) network decreases with the increase in the fraction of sp(2) carbons.

Nanoparticles thin films have wide range of applications such as nanoelectronics, magnetic storage devices, SERS substrate fabrication, optical grating and antireflective coating. Present work describes a method to prepare large area nanoparticles thin film of the order of few square centimeters. Thin film deposition has been done successfully on a wide range of conducting as well as non conducting substrates such as carbon-coated copper grid, silicon, m-plane of alumina, glass and (100) plane of NaCl single crystal. SEM, TEM and AFM studies have been done for microstructural characterization of the thin films. A basic mechanism has been proposed towards the understanding of the deposition process.

In this paper, we propose a new design configuration for a carbon nanotube (CNT) array based pulsed field emission device to stabilize the field emission current. In the new design, we consider a pointed height distribution of the carbon nanotube array under a diode configuration with two side gates maintained at a negative potential to obtain a highly intense beam of electrons localized at the center of the array. The randomly oriented CNTs are assumed to be grown on a metallic substrate in the form of a thin film. A model of field emission from an array of CNTs under diode configuration was proposed and validated by experiments. Despite high output, the current in such a thin film device often decays drastically. The present paper is focused on understanding this problem. The random orientation of the CNTs and the electromechanical interaction are modeled to explain the self-assembly. The degraded state of the CNTs and the electromechanical force are employed to update the orientation of the CNTs. Pulsed field emission current at the device scale is finally obtained by using the Fowler-Nordheim equation by considering a dynamic electric field across the cathode and the anode and integration of current densities over the computational cell surfaces on the anode side. Furthermore we compare the subsequent performance of the pointed array with the conventionally used random and uniform arrays and show that the proposed design outperforms the conventional designs by several orders of magnitude. Based on the developed model, numerical simulations aimed at understanding the effects of various geometric parameters and their statistical features on the device current history are reported.

The main idea proposed in this paper is that in a vertically aligned array of short carbon nanotubes (CNTs) grown on a metal substrate, we consider a frequency dependent electric field, so that the mode-specific propagation of phonons, in correspondence with the strained band structure and the dispersion curves, take place. We perform theoretical calculations to validate this idea with a view of optimizing the field emission behavior of the CNT array. This is the first approach of its kind, and is in contrast to the the conventional approach where a DC bias voltage is applied in order to observe field emission. A first set of experimental results presented in this paper gives a clear indication that phonon-assisted control of field emission current in CNT based thin film diode is possible.

Titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) films have been deposited on glass and p-silicon (1 0 0) substrates by DC magnetron sputtering technique to investigate their structural, electrical and optical properties. The surface composition of the TiO(2) films has been analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The TiO(2) films formed on unbiased substrates were amorphous. Application of negative bias voltage to the substrate transformed the amorphous TiO(2) into polycrystalline as confirmed by Raman spectroscopic studies. Thin film capacitors with configuration of Al/TiO(2)/p-Si have been fabricated. The leakage current density of unbiased films was 1 x10(-6) A/cm(2) at a gate bias voltage of 1.5 V and it was decreased to 1.41 x 10(-7) A/cm(2) with the increase of substrate bias voltage to -150 V owing to the increase in thickness of interfacial layer of SiO(2). Dielectric properties and AC electrical conductivity of the films were studied at various frequencies for unbiased and biased at -150 V. The capacitance at 1 MHz for unbiased films was 2.42 x 10(-10) F and it increased to 5.8 x 10(-10) F in the films formed at substrate bias voltage of -150 V. Dielectric constant of TiO(2) films were calculated from capacitance-voltage measurements at 1 MHz frequency. The dielectric constant of unbiased films was 6.2 while those formed at -150 V it increased to 19. The optical band gap of the films decreased from 3.50 to 3.42 eV with the increase of substrate bias voltage from 0 to -150 V. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we have carried out thin film characterization of poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene)-sultone (PProDOT-S), a derivative of electrochromic poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT). PProDOT-S was deposited onto transparent conducting oxide coated glass substrates by solution casting method. Single wavelength spectrophotometry is used to monitor the switching speed and contrast ratio at maximum wavelength (lambda (max)). The percentage transmittance at the lambda (max) of the neutral polymer is monitored as a function of time when the polymer film is repeatedly switched. This experiment gives a quantitative measure of the speed with which a film is able to switch between the two states i.e. the coloured and the bleached states. PProDOT-S films were switched at a voltage of 1 center dot 9 V with a switching speed of 2 s at lambda (max) of 565 nm and showed a contrast of similar to 37%. Cyclic voltammetry performed at different scan rates have shown the characteristic anodic and cathodic peaks. The structural investigations of PProDOT-S films by IR spectra were in good agreement with previously reported results. Raman spectra of PProDOT-S showed a strong Raman peak at 1509 cm (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) and a weak peak at 1410 cm (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) due to the C = C asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations of thiophene rings. The morphological investigations carried out by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) of polymer films have shown that these polymers are found to be arranged in dense packed clusters with non-uniform distribution having an average width and length of 95 nm and 160 nm, respectively.

In this Letter, we present the interesting results of photodarkening (PD), transition toward photostability, and a slow crossover from PD to photobleaching when composition of the chalcogenide glassy thin film changes from Ge-deficient to rich. A subsequent Raman analysis on these as-prepared and irradiated samples provide the direct evidence of photoinduced structural rearrangement, i.e., photocrystallization of Se and the removal of edge-sharing GeSe4 tetrahedra. Further, our experimental results clearly demonstrate that light-induced effects can be effectively controlled by choosing the right composition and provide valuable information on synthesizing photostable/sensitive glasses.

The present study demonstrates a method to deliver hydrophobic drugs by incorporation into thin films and microcapsules fabricated via a layer-by-layer assembly approach. The hydrophobic molecule binding properties of albumin have been exploited for solubilization of a water-insoluble molecule, pyrene (model drug), by preparation of non-covalent conjugates with bovine serum albumin (BSA). Conjugation with BSA renders a highly negative zeta potential to the previously uncharged pyrene which favors the assembly formation by electrostatic interaction with a positively charged polyelectrolyte, chitosan (at acidic pH). The growth of the assembly was followed by monitoring pyrene absorbance with successive layer deposition. The thin film assembly was demonstrated to be capable of releasing its hydrophobic cargo under physiological conditions. We demonstrated the applicability of this approach by encapsulating a water-insoluble drug, curcumin. These assemblies were further loaded with the anti-cancer drug Doxorubicin. Biocompatible calcium carbonate microparticles were used for capsule preparation. The porous nature of the microparticles allows for the pre-encapsulation of therapeutic macromolecules like protein. The fabrication of protein encapsulated stable microcapsules with hydrophobic molecules incorporated into the shell of the microcapsules has been demonstrated. The microcapsules were further capable of loading hydrophilic molecules like Rhodamine B. Thus, using the approach described, a multi-agent carrier for hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs as well as therapeutic macromolecules can be envisioned.

Amorphous Ge15Te85-xSix thin film switching devices (1 <= x <= 6) have been deposited in sandwich geometry, on glass substrates with aluminum electrodes, by flash evaporation technique. These devices exhibit memory type electrical switching, like bulk Ge15Te85-xSix glasses. However, unlike the bulk glasses, a-Ge15Te85-xSix films exhibit a smooth electrical switching behavior. The electrical switching fields of a-Ge15Te85-xSix thin film samples are also comparable with other chalcogenide samples used in memory applications. The switching fields of a-Ge15Te85-xSix films have been found to increase with increasing Si concentration. Also, the optical band gap of a-Ge15Te85-xSix films is found to increase with Si content. The observed results have been understood on the basis of increase in network connectivity and rigidity with Si addition. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Oriented Strontium Ferrite films with the c axis orientation were deposited with varying oxygen partial pressure on Al2O3(0001) substrate using Pulsed Laser Deposition technique. The angle dependent magnetic hysteresis, remanent coercivity, and temperature dependent coercivity had been employed to understand the magnetization reversal of these films. It was found that the Strontium Ferrite thin film grown at lower (higher) oxygen partial pressure shows Stoner-Wohlfarth type (Kondorsky like) reversal. The relative importance of pinning and nucleation processes during magnetization reversal is used to explain the type of the magnetization reversal with different oxygen partial pressure during growth. We present a hybrid finite element based methodology to solve the coupled fluid structure problem of squeeze film effects in vibratory MEMS devices, such as gyroscopes, RF switches, and 2D resonators. The aforementioned devices often have a thin plate like structure vibrating normally to a fixed substrate, and are generally not perfectly vacuum packed. This results in a thin air film being trapped between the vibrating plate and the fixed substrate which behaves like a squeeze film offering both stiffness and damping. For accurate modelling of such devices the squeeze film effects must be incorporated. Extensive literature is available on squeeze film modelling, however only a few studies address the coupled fluid elasticity problem. The majority of the studies that account for the plate elasticity coupled with the fluid equation, either use approximate mode shapes for the plate or use iterative solution strategies. In an earlier work we presented a single step coupled methodology using only one type of displacement based element to solve the coupled problem. The displacement based finite element models suffer from locking issues when it comes to modelling very thin structures with the lateral dimensions much larger than the plate thickness as is typical in MEMS devices with squeeze film effects. In this work we present another coupled formulation where we have used hybrid elements to model the structural domain. The numerical results show a huge improvement in convergence and accuracy with coarse hybrid mesh as compared to displacement based formulations. We further compare our numerical results with experimental data from literature and find them to be in good accordance.

Cu(In,Al)Se-2 films are grown using single step electrodeposition technique. The film properties are studied by varying the deposition time from 500 to 2000 s. Peaks corresponding to elemental Se and Cu2Se phase started appearing from 1200 s of deposition. The composition is changed significantly after 1500 S. Se concentration increased from 57 to 68% with the increase in the deposition time. The Cu2Se phase is dominant in the films deposited for a duration of 2000 s and the grain size increased from 1.12 to 2.15 mu m in this film. Raman analysis confirmed the presence of Se and Cu2Se phase in C1200. In C1500 and C2000 the spectra showed prominent mode corresponding to Cu2Se. The thickness of the film increased from 0.85 to 2.3 mu m with the increase in the deposition time. All the films showed p-type conductivity and resistivity reduced with increased thickness.
