An open-framework zinc phosphate, [C6N4H22][Zn6(PO4)4(HPO4)2] (I), with alternating inorganic and organic layers has been synthesized hydrothermally from a starting mixture of ZnO, HCl, H3PO4, H2C2O4, and triethylenetetramine. Single-crystal data for I: monoclinic, space GROUP =P21/c (No. 14), a=9.881(1), b=16.857(1), c=8.286(1) Å, β=96.7(1)°, V=1370.8(1) Å3, Z=2, R1=0.06, and wR2=0.13 [1408 observed reflections with I>2σ(I)]. The structure of I comprises a network of ZnO4, PO4, and PO3(OH) tetrahedra forming one-dimensional tubes. The tubes, in turn, are linked via oxygen atoms forming macroanionic inorganic layers with eight-membered apertures. The one-dimensional tube-like architecture in I is a novel feature worthy of note.

Biphasic calcium phosphates have received considerable attention due to their optimum dissolution rate in the human body after implantation. These materials are composed of hydroxyapatite (HA) and resorbable tricalcium phosphate (TCP). In the present investigation, HA whiskers are reinforced into TCP to enhance the mechanical properties of this biphasic composite. Various amounts (30-50 wt%) HA whiskers are reinforced in TCP matrix. Microstructural characterization has been carried out using field-emission scanning electron microscope. Mechanical properties have been investigated by microindentation in a universal testing machine (UTM). As TCP is resorbable, it will dissolve in body fluid and there is a strong possibility for the faceted HA whiskers to interact with functional groups present in the body fluid surroundings.

We report a low-temperature synthesis of La1.95Na0.05NiO4 from NaOH flux, La0.97K0.03NiO3 and La0.95K0.05Ni0.85Cu0.15O3 phases from KOH flux at 400 degreesC. Alkali-doped LaNiO3 can be prepared in KOH, but not in NaOH flux and La2NiO4 can be prepared in NaOH, but not in KOH flux. The flux-grown oxides were characterized by powder X-ray Rietveld profile analysis and electron microscopy. Sodium doped La2NiO4 crystallizes in orthorhombic structure and potassium doped LaNiO3-phases crystallizes in rhombohedral structure. La1.95Na0.05NiO4 is weakly paramagnetic and semiconducting while La0.97K0.03NiO3 and La0.95K0.05Ni0.85Cu0.15O3 show Pauli paramagnetic and metallic behavior. Flavokinase was purified, for the first time from a plant source [mung bean (Phaseolus aureus)] by affinity chromatography in the presence of orthophosphate and by using C-8 ATP-agarose (ATP linked through the C-8 position to beaded agarose), Cibacron Blue and riboflavin--Sepharoses. An altered substrates-saturation pattern was observed in the presence of K2HPO4. The conformational changes of the enzyme in the presence of K2HPO4 were monitored by fluorescence spectroscopy. These results highlight the regulatory nature of this enzyme.

Ferromagnetic dicopper(II) complexes [Cu(2)(mu-O(2)CCH(3))(mu-OH)(L)(2)(mu-L(1))](PF(6))(2), where L = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), L(1) = H(2)O in 1 and L = dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq), L(1) = CH(3)CN in 2, are prepared and structurally characterized. Crystals of 1 and 2 belong to the monoclinic space group of P2(1)/n and P2(1)/m, respectively. The copper(II) centers display distorted square-pyramidal geometry having a phenanthroline base and two oxygen atoms of the bridging hydroxo and acetate group in the basal plane. The fifth coordination site has weak axially bound bridging solvent molecule H(2)O in 1 and CH(3)CN in 2. The Cu center dot center dot center dot Cu distances are 3.034 and 3.046 angstrom in 1 and 2, respectively. The complexes show efficient hydrolytic cleavage of supercoiled pUC19 DNA as evidenced from the mechanistic studies that include T4 DNA ligase experiments. The binuclear complexes form monomeric copper(II) adducts [Cu(L)(2)(BNPP)](PF(6)) (L = phen, 3; dpq, 4) with bis(4-nitrophenyl)phosphate (BNPP) as a model phosphodiester. The crystal structures of 3 and 4 reveal distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry in which BNPP binds through the oxygen atom of the phosphate. The kinetic data of the DNA cleavage reactions of the binuclear complexes under pseudo- and true-Michaelis-Menten conditions indicate remarkable enhancement in the DNA hydrolysis rate in comparison to the control data. Nucleoside diphosphate kinases (NDK) are characterized by high catalytic turnover rates and diverse substrate specificity. These features make this enzyme an effective activator of a pro-drug an application that has been actively pursued for a variety of therapeutic strategies. The catalytic mechanism of this enzyme is governed by a conserved histidine that coordinates a magnesium ion at the active site. Despite substantial structural and biochemical information on NDK, the mechanistic feature of the phospho-transfer that leads to auto-phosphorylation remains unclear. While the role of the histidine residue is well documented, the other active site residues, in particular the conserved serine remains poorly characterized. Studies on some homologues suggest no role for the serine residue at the active site, while others suggest a crucial role for this serine in the regulation and quaternary association of this enzyme in some species. Here we report the biochemical features of the Staphylococcus aureus NDK and the mutant enzymes. We also describe the crystal structures of the apo-NDK, as a transition state mimic with vanadate and in complex with different nucleotide substrates. These structures formed the basis for molecular dynamics simulations to understand the broad substrate specificity of this enzyme and the role of active site residues in the phospho-transfer mechanism and oligomerization. Put together, these data suggest that concerted changes in the conformation of specific residues facilitate the stabilization of nucleotide complexes thereby enabling the steps involved in the ping-pong reaction mechanism without large changes to the overall structure of this enzyme. Mechanisms that control the volume changes behavior of foundation soils are well understood. The changes that occur in the behavior of soil due to migration of pollutants are not well understood. The extent of changes that occur in the presence of small concentration of contaminants can be predicted based on changes in the thickness of double layer and associated fabric changes. Interactions that occur with strong contaminants depends on the type of soil, type and concentration of contamination and duration of interaction etc It has been shown that different concentrations (1N and 4N) of sodium hydroxide solution causes abnormal changes on volume change behaviour of soil due to mineralogical changes. An attempt is made in this paper to stabilize contaminated soil using fly ash, after establishing its stability in alkali solutions. It was found that the effectiveness of fly ash to control the alkali induced heave increases with fly ash content incorporated into the soil. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the mineralogical changes that occur in soil due to alkali interaction are inhibited by the presence of fly ash.

The properties of the soils can change drastically due to the presence of contaminants leading to several geotechnical failures founded on them. One important pollutant that can have considerable effect is the alkali released from varies industries. It is known that alkali solutions can increase the swelling of soil containing both expansive and non-expansive minerals. Many attempts to control this alkali-induced heave in soils through chemical agents were not successful. With a view to study the use of fly ash to stabilize alkali contaminated soil, the behavior of soils containing 25% and 50% of fly ash has been studied in the presence of 2N-alkali solution. Results of volume change behavior of non-expansive soil containing kaolinite clay mineral in the presence of fly ash showed that it is effective to control the alkali induced swelling in the soil. The effectiveness increases with an increase in the percentage of fly ash in soils. Detailed X-ray diffraction and SEM studies showed that the mineralogical changes that occur in soil due to alkali interaction are inhibited in the presence of fly ash.

The ring versus side-chain alkylation of toluene with methanol over alkali-exchanged zeolite-X of differing basicity has been investigated by in situ infrared spectroscopy and TPD measurements. Over the basic Cs-exchanged zeolite the product of alkylation is styrene/ethylbenzene while over the acidic Li-exchanged zeolite ring alkylation occurs to give mainly xylene as the product. FTIR and TPD investigations reveal that, the key difference in the two types of alkylation processes lies in the state of the adsorbed methanol present at higher temperatures in the zeolite. In basic zeolites, methanol decomposes to formaldehyde and formates. The former is the key ‘side-chain’ alkylating species that leads to the formation of styrene. In the acidic zeolites it is shown that methanol bound to the acid sites plays an active role in the ‘ring alkylation’ of toluene to xylene.

Gd1.95Eu0.4M0.01O3 (M = Li+ Na+ K+) nanophosphors have been synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion (LSC) method. Powder X-ray diffraction pattern (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis and photoluminescence (PL) measurements were carried out to characterize their structural and luminescent properties. The excitation and emission spectra indicated that the phosphor could be well excited by UV light (243 nm) and emit red light about 612 nm. The effect of alkali co-dopant on PL properties has been examined. The results showed that incorporation of Li+, Na+ and K+ in to Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphor would lead to a remarkable increase of photoluminescence. The PL intensity of Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphor was improved evidently by co-doping with Li+ ions whose radius is less than that of Gd3+ and hardly with Na+, K+ whose radius is larger than that of Gd3+. The effect of co-dopants on enhanced luminescence was mainly regarded as the result of a suitable local distortion of crystal field surrounding the Eu3+ activator. These results will play an important role in seeking some more effective co-dopants. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) electronically wired by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and in-situ transformed graphitic carbon for lithium-ion batteries are discussed here. Presence of MWCNTs up to a maximum of 0.5% in porous LiFePO4 (abbreviated as LFP-CNT) resulted in remarkable reversible cyclability and rate capability compared to LFP coated with highly disordered carbon (abbreviated as LFP-C). In the current range (30-1500) mAg(-1), specific capacity of LFP-CNT (approximate to 150-50 mAhg(-1)) is observed to be always higher compared to LFP-C (approximate to 120-0 mAhg(-1)). At higher currents of 250-1500 mAg(-1) LFP-C performed poorly compared to LFP-CNT. LFP-C showed considerable decay in capacity with increase in cycle number at intermediate high currents (approximate to 250 mAg(-1)) whereas at very high currents (approximate to 750 mAg(-1)) it is nearly zero. The LFP-CNT showed no such detrimental behavior in battery performance. The exemplary performance of the LFP-CNT is attributed to combination of both enhanced LFP structural stability, as revealed by Raman spectra and formation of an efficient percolative network of carbon nanotubes which during the course of galvanostatic cycling gets gradually transformed to graphitic carbon.
