An equation has been derived for predicting the activity coefficient of oxygen or sulphur in dilute solution in binary alloys, based on the quasichemical approach, where the metal atoms and the oxygen atoms are assigned different bond numbers. This equation is an advance on Alcock and Richardson's earlier treatment where all the three types of atoms were assigned the same coordination number. However, the activity coefficients predicted by this new equation appear to be very similar to those obtained through Alcock and Richardson's equation for a number of alloy systems, when the coordination number of oxygen in the new model is the same as the average coordination number used in the earlier equation. A second equation based on the formation of “molecular species” of the type XnO and YnO in solution is also derived, where X and Y atoms attached to oxygen are assumed not to make any other bonds. This equation does not fit experimental data in all the systems considered for a fixed value of n. Howover, if the strong oxygen-metal bonds are assumed to distort the electronic configuation around the metal atoms bonded to oxygen and thus reduce the strength of the bonds formed by these atoms with neighbouring metal atoms by approximately a factor of two, the resulting equation is found to predict the activity coefficients of oxygen that are in good agreement with experimental data in a number of binary alloys.

The effect of deposition temperature on residual stress evolution with temperature in Ti-rich NiTi films deposited on silicon substrates was studied. Ti-rich NiTi films were deposited on 3? Si (100) substrates by DC magnetron sputtering at three deposition temperatures (300, 350 and 400 degrees C) with subsequent annealing in vacuum at their respective deposition temperatures for 4 h. The initial value of residual stress was found to be the highest for the film deposited and annealed at 400 degrees C and the lowest for the film deposited and annealed at 300 degrees C. All the three films were found to be amorphous in the as-deposited and annealed conditions. The nature of the stress response with temperature on heating in the first cycle (room temperature to 450 degrees C) was similar for all three films although the spike in tensile stress, which occurs at similar to 330 degrees C, was significantly higher in the film deposited and annealed at 300 degrees C. All the films were also found to undergo partial crystallisation on heating up to 450 degrees C and this resulted in decrease in the stress values around 5560 degrees C in the cooling cycle. The stress response with temperature in the second thermal cycle (room temperature to 450 degrees C and back), which is reflective of the intrinsic film behaviour, was found to be similar in all cases and the elastic modulus determined from the stress response was also more or less identical. The three deposition temperatures were also not found to have a significant effect on the transformation characteristics of these films such as transformation start and finish temperatures, recovery stress and hysteresis.

By means of N-body simulations we investigate the impact of minor mergers on the angular momentum and dynamical properties of the merger remnant. Our simulations cover a range of initial orbital characteristics and gas-to-stellar mass fractions (from 0 to 20%), and include star formation and supernova feedback. We confirm and extend previous results by showing that the specific angular momentum of the stellar component always decreases independently of the orbital parameters or morphology of the satellite, and that the decrease in the rotation velocity of the primary galaxy is accompanied by a change in the anisotropy of the orbits. However, the decrease affects only the old stellar population, and not the new population formed from gas during the merging process. This means that the merging process induces an increasing difference in the rotational support of the old and young stellar components, with the old one lagging with respect to the new. Even if our models are not intended specifically to reproduce the Milky Way and its accretion history, we find that, under certain conditions, the modeled rotational lag found is compatible with that observed in the Milky Way disk, thus indicating that minor mergers can be a viable way to produce it. The lag can increase with the vertical distance from the disk midplane, but only if the satellite is accreted along a direct orbit, and in all cases the main contribution to the lag comes from stars originally in the primary disk rather than from stars in the satellite galaxy. We also discuss the possibility of creating counter-rotating stars in the remnant disk, their fraction as a function of the vertical distance from the galaxy midplane, and the cumulative effect of multiple mergers on their creation.

Serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT), a pyridoxal-5V-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme catalyzes thetetrahydrofolate (H4-folate)- dependent retro-aldol cleavage of serine to form 5,10-methylene H4-folate and glycine. The structure–function relationship of SHMT wasstudied in our laboratory initially by mutation of residues that are conserved in all SHMTs and later by structure-based mutagenesis of residues located in the active site. The analysis of mutants showed that K71, Y72, R80, D89, W110, S202, C203, H304, H306 and H356 residues are involved in maintenance of the oligomeric structure. The mutation of D227, a residue involved in charge relay system, led to the formation of inactive dimers, indicating that this residue has a role in maintaining the tetrameric structure and catalysis. E74, a residue appropriately positioned in the structure of the enzyme to carry out proton abstraction, was shown by characterization of E74Q and E74K mutants to be involved in conversion of the enzyme from an ‘open’ to ‘closed’ conformation rather than proton abstraction from the hydroxylgroup of serine. K256, the residue involved in the formation of Schiffs base with PLP, also plays a crucial role in the maintenance of the tetrameric structure. Mutation of R262 residue established the importance of distal interactions in facilitating catalysis and Y82 is not involved in the formaldehyde transfer via the postulated hemiacetal intermediate but plays a role in stabilizing the quinonoid intermediate. The mutational analysis of scSHMT along with the structure of recombinant Bacillus stearothermophilus SHMT and its substrate(s)complexes was used to provide evidence for a direct transfer mechanism rather than retro-aldol cleavage for the reaction catalyzed by SHMT.

A study is made to bring out the effect of alloying with Cr, Ti or Mn on the creep behaviour of Fe3Al. Impression creep experiments have been carried out in the DO3 phase field. In all the alloys, power law creep behaviour is observed in the stress range covered. The stress exponent for steady state creep rate and the activation energy for creep indicate that the creep rate is controlled by the dislocation climb process. Among the alloying elements studied, addition of Ti is most effective in improving the creep resistance.

Impact of disturbance on forest stand density, basal area, dbh class distribution of density and basal area, species richness, species diversity and similarity index was assessed through monitoring six, one-hectare, permanent forest plots after a period of 24 years in tropical moist forests of Uttara Kannada district, Western Ghats, India. It was observed that all sites lost trees due to removal by people and mortality. Loss of trees was more in sites that are easily accessible and closer to human habitation. In spite of a decrease in tree density, an increase in basal area was observed in some forest plots, which could be on account of stimulatory growth of surviving trees. Decrease in basal area in other sites indicates greater human pressure and overexploitation of trees. Preponderance of lower girth class trees, and a unimodal reverse `J-shaped' curve of density distribution as observed in majority of the sites in the benchmark year, was indicative of regenerating status of these forests. The decrease in number of species in all forest sites was due to indiscriminate removal of trees by people, without sparing species with only a few individuals, and also due to mortality of trees of rare species. Higher species richness and diversity in the lowest dbh class in most of the sites in the benchmark year is indicative of the existence of favorable conditions for sylvigenesis. The decrease in the similarity index suggests extirpation of species, favoring invasion and colonization by secondary species. To minimize human pressure on forests and to facilitate regeneration and growth, proper management planning and conservation measures are needed.

Transient protein-protein interactions play crucial roles in all facets of cellular physiology. Here, using an analysis on known 3-D structures of transient protein-protein complexes, their corresponding uncomplexed forms and energy calculations we seek to understand the roles of protein-protein interfacial residues in the unbound forms. We show that there are conformationally near invariant and evolutionarily conserved interfacial residues which are rigid and they account for similar to 65% of the core interface. Interestingly, some of these residues contribute significantly to the stabilization of the interface structure in the uncomplexed form. Such residues have strong energetic basis to perform dual roles of stabilizing the structure of the uncomplexed form as well as the complex once formed while they maintain their rigid nature throughout. This feature is evolutionarily well conserved at both the structural and sequence levels. We believe this analysis has general bearing in the prediction of interfaces and understanding molecular recognition.

The search for molecular markers which predict response to chemotherapy is an important aspect of current neuro-oncology research. MGMT promoter methylation is the only proved marker of glioblastoma. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of topoisomerase expression on glioblastoma survival and study the mechanisms involved. The transcript levels of all isoforms of the topoisomerase family in all grades of diffuse astrocytoma were assessed. A prospective study of patients with glioblastoma treated by a uniform treatment procedure was performed with the objective of correlating outcome with gene expression. The ability of TOP2A enzyme to relax the super coiled plasmid DNA in the presence of temozolomide was evaluated to assess its effect on TOP2A. The temozolomide cyctotoxicity of TOP2A-silenced U251 cells was assessed. The transcript levels of TOP2A, TOP2B, and TOP3A are upregulated significantly in GBM in comparison with lower grades of astrocytoma and normal brain samples. mRNA levels of TOP2A correlated significantly with survival of the patients. Higher TOP2A transcript levels in GBM patients predicted better prognosis (P = 0.043; HR = 0.889). Interestingly, we noted that temozolomide inhibited TOP2A activity in in-vitro enzyme assays. We also noted that siRNA knock down of TOP2A rendered a glioma cell line resistant to temozolomide chemotherapy. We demonstrated for the first time that temozolomide is also a TOP2A inhibitor and established that TOP2A transcript levels determine the chemosensitivity of glioblastoma to temozolomide therapy. Very high levels of TOP2A are a good prognostic indicator in GBM patients receiving temozolomide chemotherapy.

The present work is aimed at studying the influence of electrolyte chemistry on the voltage-time (V-T) response characteristics, phase structure, surface morphology, film growth rate and corrosion properties of titania films fabricated by micro arc oxidation (MAO) on Cp Ti. The titania films were developed with a sodium phosphate based reference electrolyte comprising the additives such as sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), sodium nitrite (NaNO2) and urea (CO(NH2)(2)). The phase composition, surface morphology, elemental composition and thickness of the films were assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The corrosion characteristics of the fabricated films were studied under Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) condition by potentiodynamic polarization, long term potential and linear polarization resistance (LPR) measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. In addition, the corrosion characteristics of the grown films were analyzed by EIS curve fitting and equivalent circuit modeling. Salt spray test (SST) as per ASTM B 117 standard was also conducted to verify the corrosion resistance of the grown films. The XRD results showed that the titania films were composed of both anatase and rutile phases at different proportions. Besides, the films grown in carbonate and nitrite containing electrolyte systems showed an enhanced growth of their rutile phase in the 1 0 1] direction which could be attributed to the modifications introduced in the growth process by the abundant oxygen available during the process. The SEM-EDX and elemental mapping results showed that the respective electrolyte borne elements were incorporated and distributed uniformly in all the films. Among all the grown films under study, the film developed in carbonate containing electrolyte system exhibited considerably improved corrosion resistance due to suitable modifications in its structural and morphological characteristics. The rate of anatase to rutile phase transformation and the rutile growth direction were strongly influenced by the abundant oxidizing species available during the film growth process. We observe an unusual tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) phenomenon in a composite of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 with CoFe2O4 where the TMR versus applied magnetic field loop suggests a ``negative coercive field.'' Tracing its origin back to a ``dipolar-biasing'' of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 by CoFe2O4, we show that the TMR of even a single composite can be tuned continuously so that the resistance peak or the highest sensitivity of the TMR can be positioned anywhere on the magnetic field axis with a suitable magnetic history of the sample. This phenomenon of an unprecedented tunability of the TMR should be present in general in all such composites. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics.http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4731206]

This paper presents the effect of nonlocal scaling parameter on the coupled i.e., axial, flexural, shear and contraction, wave propagation in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The axial and transverse motion of SWCNT is modeled based on first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and thickness contraction. The governing equations are derived based on nonlocal constitutive relations and the wave dispersion analysis is also carried out. The studies shows that the nonlocal scale parameter introduces certain band gap region in all wave modes where no wave propagation occurs. This is manifested in the wavenumber plots as the region where the wavenumber tends to infinite or wave speed tends to zero. The frequency at which this phenomenon occurs is called the escape frequency. Explicit expressions are derived for cut-off and escape frequencies of all waves in SWCNT. It is also shown that the cut-off frequencies of shear and contraction mode are independent of the nonlocal scale parameter. The results provided in this article are new and are useful guidance for the study and design of the next generation of nanodevices that make use of the coupled wave propagation properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes.

Metal-slag emulsion is an important process to enhance the reaction rate between the two phases; thus, it improves the heat and mass transfer of the process significantly. Various experimental studies have been carried out, and some system specific relations have been proposed by various investigators. A unified, theoretical study is lacking to model this complex phenomenon. Therefore, two simple models based on fundamental laws for metal droplet velocity (both ascending and descending) and bubble velocity, as well as its position at any instant of time, have been proposed. Analytical solutions have been obtained for the developed equations. Analytical solutions have been verified for the droplet velocity, traveling time, and size distribution in slag phase by performing high-temperature experiments in a Pb-salt system and comparing the obtained data with theory. The proposed model has also been verified with published experimental data for various liquid systems with a wide range of physical properties. A good agreement has been found between the analytical solution and the experimental and published data in all cases.

The quaternary oxide in the system Al2O3-CaO-TiO2 is found to have the composition Ca3Ti8Al12O37 rather than CaTi3Al8O19 as reported in the literature. The standard Gibbs energy of formation of Ca3Ti8Al12O37 from component binary oxides is measured in the temperature range from 900 to 1250 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell incorporating single crystal CaF2 as the solid electrolyte. The results can be represented by the equation: delta G(f(0x))(0) (+/- 70)/J mol(-1) = -248474 - 15.706(T/K). Combining this information with thermodynamic data on calcium aluminates and titanates available in the literature, subsolidus phase relations in the pseudo-ternary system Al2O3-CaO-TiO2 are computed and presented as isothermal sections. The evolution of phase relations with temperature is highlighted. Chemical potential diagrams are computed at 1200 K, showing the stability domains of the various phases in the chemical potential-composition space. In each chemical potential diagram, chemical potential of one component is plotted against the cationic fraction of the other two components. The diagrams are valid at relatively high oxygen potentials where Ti is present in its four-valent state in all the oxide phases.

Room temperature, uniaxial compression creep experiments were performed on micro-/nano-sized pillars (having diameters in the range of 250-2000 nm) of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) to investigate the influence of sample size on the time-dependent plastic deformation behavior in amorphous alloys. Experimental results reveal that plastic deformation indeed occurs at ambient temperature and at stresses that are well below the nominal quasi-static yield stress. At a given stress, higher total strains accrue in the smaller specimens. In all cases, plastic deformation was found to be devoid of shear bands, i.e., it occurs in homogeneous manner. The stress exponent obtained from the slope of the linear relation between strain rate and applied stress also shows a strong size effect, which is rationalized in terms of the amount of free volume created during deformation and the surface-to-volume ratio of the pillar.
