The transmission loss (TL) performance of spherical chambers having single inlet and multiple outlet is obtained analytically through modal expansion of acoustic field inside the spherical cavity in terms of the spherical Bessel functions and Legendre polynomials. The uniform piston driven model based upon the impedance [Z] matrix is used to characterize the multi-port spherical chamber. It is shown analytically that the [Z] parameters are independent of the azimuthal angle (phi) due to the axisymmetric shape of the sphere; rather, they depend only upon the polar angle (theta) and radius of the chamber R(0). Thus, the effects of relative polar angular location of the ports and number of outlet ports are investigated. The analytical results are shown to be in good agreement with the 3D FEA results, thereby validating the procedure suggested in this work.

Lanthanum doped lead titanate thin films are the potential candidates for the capacitors, actuators and pyroelectric sensor applications due to their excellent dielectric, and ferroelectric properties. Lanthanum doped lead titanate thin films are grown on platinum coated Si substrates by excimer laser ablation technique. A broad diffused phase transition with the maximum dielectric permittivity (ϵmax) shifting to higher temperatures with the increase of frequency, along with frequency dispersion below Tc, which are the signatures of the relaxor like characteristics were observed. The dielectric properties are investigated from −60°C to 200°C with an application of different dc fields. With increasing dc field, the dielectric constant is observed to reduce and phase transition temperature shifted to higher temperature. With the increased ac signal amplitude of the applied frequency, the magnitude of the dielectric constant is increasing and the frequency dispersion is observed in ferroelectric phase, whereas in paraelectric phase, there is no dispersion has been observed. The results are correlated with the existing theories.

This study presents a novel magnetic arm-switch-based integrated magnetic circuit for a three-phase series-shunt compensated uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The magnetic circuit acts as a common interacting field for a number of energy ports, viz., series inverter, shunt inverter, grid and load. The magnetic arm-switching technique ensures equivalent series or shunt connection between the inverters. In normal grid mode (stabiliser mode), the series inverter is used for series voltage correction and the shunt one for current correction. The inverters and the load are effectively connected in parallel when the grid power is not available. These inverters are then used to share the load power. The operation of the inverters in parallel is ensured by the magnetic arm-switching technique. This study also includes modelling of the magnetic circuit. A graphical technique called bond graph is used to model the system. In this model, the magnetic circuit is represented in terms of gyrator-capacitors. Therefore the model is also termed as gyrator-capacitor model. The model is used to extract the dynamic equations that are used to simulate the system using MATLAB/SIMULINK. This study also discusses a synchronously rotating reference frame-based control technique that is used for the control of the series and shunt inverters in different operating modes. Finally, the gyrator-capacitor model is validated by comparing the simulated and experimental results.

We report electrical property of a polycrystalline NdLiMo2O8 ceramics using complex impedance analysis. The material shows temperature dependent electrical relaxation phenomena. The d.c. conductivity shows typical Arrhenius behavior, when observed as a function of temperature. The a.c. conductivity is found to obey Jonscher's universal power law. The material was prepared in powder form by a standard solid-state reaction technique. Material formation and crystallinity have been confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies. Impedance measurements have been performed over a range of temperatures and frequencies. The results have been analyzed in the complex plane formalism and suitable equivalent circuits have been proposed in different regions. The role of bulk and grain boundary effect in the overall electrical conduction process is discussed with proper justification. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper a study on effect of different energization on removal of NOX in diesel engine exhaust has been presented. Here we made a detailed qualitative study of effect of pulsed/ac/dc voltage energizations on the NOX treatment of using conventional wire-cylinder reactor configuration. It was observed that amongst different energizations, pulse energization exhibits maximum NOX removal efficiency when compared to ac and dc energizations. For a given specific energy density, wire-cylinder reactor filled with BaTiO3 pellet gives higher NOX removal efficiency when compared to reactor without pellets under both pulse and ac energization. The dc energization does not have much impact on the removal processes. The paper further discusses the individual energization cases in detail.

Analytical solution is presented to convert a given driving-point impedance function (in s-domain) into a physically realisable ladder network with inductive coupling between any two sections and losses considered. The number of sections in the ladder network can vary, but its topology is assumed fixed. A study of the coefficients of the numerator and denominator polynomials of the driving-point impedance function of the ladder network, for increasing number of sections, led to the identification of certain coefficients, which exhibit very special properties. Generalised expressions for these specific coefficients have also been derived. Exploiting their properties, it is demonstrated that the synthesis method essentially turns out to be an exercise of solving a set of linear, simultaneous, algebraic equations, whose solution directly yields the ladder network elements. The proposed solution is novel, simple and guarantees a unique network. Presently, the formulation can synthesise a unique ladder network up to six sections.

The acoustical behavior of an elliptical chamber muffler having an end-inlet and side-outlet port is analyzed semi-analytically. A uniform piston source is assumed to model the 3-D acoustic field in the elliptical chamber cavity. Towards this end, we consider the modal expansion of acoustic pressure field in the elliptical cavity in terms of angular and radial Mathieu functions, subjected to rigid wall condition, whereupon under the assumption of a point source, Green's function is obtained. On integrating this function over piston area of the side or end port and dividing it by piston area, one obtains the acoustic field, whence one can find the impedance matrix parameters characterizing the 2-port system. The acoustic performance of these configurations is evaluated in terms of transmission loss (TL). The analytical results thus obtained are compared with 3-D HA carried on a commercial software for certain muffler configurations. These show excellent agreement, thereby validating the 3-D semi-analytical piston driven model. The influence of the chamber length as well as the angular and axial location of the end and side ports on TL performance is also discussed, thus providing useful guidelines to the muffler designer. A current injection pattern in Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) has its own current distribution profile within the domain under test. Hence, different current patterns have different sensitivity, spatial resolution and distinguishability. Image reconstruction studies with practical phantoms are essential to assess the performance of EIT systems for their validation, calibration and comparison purposes. Impedance imaging of real tissue phantoms with different current injection methods is also essential for better assessment of the biomedical EIT systems. Chicken tissue paste phantoms and chicken tissue block phantoms are developed and the resistivity image reconstruction is studied with different current injection methods. A 16-electrode array is placed inside the phantom tank and the tank is filled with chicken muscle tissue paste or chicken tissue blocks as the background mediums. Chicken fat tissue, chicken bone, air hole and nylon cylinders are used as the inhomogeneity to obtained different phantom configurations. A low magnitude low frequency constant sinusoidal current is injected at the phantom boundary with opposite and neighboring current patterns and the boundary potentials are measured. Resistivity images are reconstructed from the boundary data using EIDORS and the reconstructed images are analyzed with the contrast parameters calculated from their elemental resistivity profiles. Results show that the resistivity profiles of all the phantom domains are successfully reconstructed with a proper background resistivity and high inhomogeneity resistivity for both the current injection methods. Reconstructed images show that, for all the chicken tissue phantoms, the inhomogeneities are suitably reconstructed with both the current injection protocols though the chicken tissue block phantom and opposite method are found more suitable. It is observed that the boundary potentials of the chicken tissue block phantoms are higher than the chicken tissue paste phantom. SNR of the chicken tissue block phantoms are found comparatively more and hence the chicken tissue block phantom is found more suitable for its lower noise performance. The background noise is found less in opposite method for all the phantom configurations which yields the better resistivity images with high PCR and COC and proper IRMean and IRMax neighboring method showed higher noise level for both the chicken tissue paste phantoms and chicken tissue block phantoms with all the inhomogeneities. Opposite method is found more suitable for both the chicken tissue phantoms, and also, chicken tissue block phantoms are found more suitable compared to the chicken tissue paste phantom. Layered LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 crystallizing in R (3) over barm space group is synthesized by decomposing the constituent metal-nitrate precursors. Oxidizing nature of metal nitrates stabilizes nickel in +3 oxidation state, enabling a high degree of cation ordering in the layered LiNi0.8Co0.2O2. The powder sample characterized by XRD Rietveld refinement reveals <2% Li-Ni site exchange in the layers. Scanning electron microscopic studies on the as-synthesized LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 sample reflect well defined particles of cubic morphology with particle size ranging between 200 and 250 nm. Cyclic voltammograms suggest that LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 undergoes phase transformation on first charge with resultant phase being completely reversible in subsequent cycles. The first-charge-cycle phase transition is further supported by impedance spectroscopy that shows substantial reduction in resistance during initial de-intercalation. Galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles reflect a first-discharge capacity of 184 mAh g(-1) which is stabilized at 170 mAh g(-1) over 50 cycles.

A CMOS gas sensor array platform with digital read-out containing 27 sensor pixels and a reference pixel is presented. A signal conditioning circuit at each pixel includes digitally programmable gain stages for sensor signal amplification followed by a second order continuous time delta sigma modulator for digitization. Each sensor pixel can be functionalized with a distinct sensing material that facilitates transduction based on impedance change. Impedance spectrum (up to 10 KHz) of the sensor is obtained off-chip by computing the fast Fourier transform of sensor and reference pixel outputs. The reference pixel also compensates for the phase shift introduced by the signal processing circuits. The chip also contains a temperature sensor with digital readout for ambient temperature measurement. A sensor pixel is functionalized with polycarbazole conducting polymer for sensing volatile organic gases and measurement results are presented. The chip is fabricated in a 0.35 CMOS technology and requires a single step post processing for functionalization. It consumes 57 mW from a 3.3 V supply.

In submitted research; nanocrystalline powders having elements Ni0.5Cu0.25Zn0.25Fe2 xInxO4 with varied amounts of indium ( x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) were grown-up by modified citrate to nitrate alchemy. The realism of single phase cubic spinel creation of the synthesized ferrite samples was studied by the DTA-TGA, XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, VSM and dielectric measurements. SEM was applied to inspect the morphological variations and EDX was used to determine the compositional mass ratios. The studies on the dielectric constant (epsilon'), dielectric loss (epsilon `'), loss tangent (tan delta), ac conductivity (sigma(ac)), resistive and reactive parts of the impedance analysis (Z' and Z `') at room temperature were also carried out. The saturation magnetizations (Ms) were determined using the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Ms. decreased with the increase In3+ doping content, as Fe3+ of 5(mu B) ions are replaced by In3+ of 5 mu(B) ions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Backbone alkylation has been shown to result in a dramatic reduction in the conformational space that is sterically accessible to a-amino acid residues in peptides. By extension, the presence of geminal dialkyl substituents at backbone atoms also restricts available conformational space for beta and ? residues. Five peptides containing the achiral beta 2,2-disubstituted beta-amino acid residue, 1-(aminomethyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (beta 2,2Ac6c), have been structurally characterized in crystals by X-ray diffraction. The tripeptide Boc-Aib-beta 2,2Ac6c-Aib-OMe (1) adopts a novel fold stabilized by two intramolecular H-bonds (C11 and C9) of opposite directionality. The tetrapeptide Boc-Aib-beta 2,2Ac6c]2-OMe (2) and pentapeptide Boc-Aib-beta 2,2Ac6c]2-Aib-OMe (3) form short stretches of a hybrid a beta C11 helix stabilized by two and three intramolecular H-bonds, respectively. The structure of the dipeptide Boc-Aib-beta 2,2Ac6c-OMe (5) does not reveal any intramolecular H-bond. The aggregation pattern in the crystal provides an example of an extended conformation of the beta 2,2Ac6c residue, forming a polar sheet like H-bond. The protected derivative Ac-beta 2,2Ac6c-NHMe (4) adopts a locally folded gauche conformation about the C beta?Ca bonds (?=-55.7 degrees). Of the seven examples of beta 2,2Ac6c residues reported here, six adopt gauche conformations, a feature which promotes local folding when incorporated into peptides. A comparison between the conformational properties of beta 2,2Ac6c and beta 3,3Ac6c residues, in peptides, is presented. Backbone torsional parameters of H-bonded a beta/beta a turns are derived from the structures presented in this study and earlier reports.
