Chalcopyrite in contact with water is thermodynamically unstable in the presence of oxygen. Oxidation of chalcopyrite may take place due to various factors, e.g., geological environment, mining/comminution, and storage. In this work oxidation of chalcopyrite has been investigated through interfacial electrokinetics. The characteristics of samples obtained from different geological locations as well as the effects of ageing and laboratory oxidation have been delineated. Variation of the solid-liquid ratio was found to have a significant effect on the zeta-potential characteristics of chalcopyrite. The role of constituent metal ions, namely copper and iron, has been studied in the absence and presence of externally added metal ions. The results indicated that the ratio of Cu/Fe on the surface of oxidized chalcopyrite determines the Stern layer potential and under appropriate solution chemistry conditions influences charge reversals. The mineral surfaces, thus, could be either copper-rich or iron-rich as reflected by a shift in pH(iep),,(s). The observed charge reversals have been explained on the basis of a model proposed by James and Healy. (C) 1997 Academic Press.

Charge ordering in rare earth manganates of the type Ln(0.5)A(0.5)MnO(3) (Ln = rare earth, A = alkaline earth) is highly sensitive to the average radius of the A-site cations, [r(A)]. Tn the small [r(A)] regime (e.g., Y0.5Ca0.5MnO3), charge ordering occurs in the paramagnetic state, the transformation to an antiferromagnetic state occurring at still lower temperatures. At moderate [r(A)] values (e.g., Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3), a ferromagnetic metallic state transforms to a charge-ordered antiferromagnetic state with cooling. These two distinct types of charge ordering and associated properties are explained in terms of the variation of the exchange couplings J(FM) and J(AFM) with [r(A)] and the invariance of the single-ion Jahn-Teller energy with [r(A)]. A qualitative temperature-[r(A)] phase diagram, consistent with the experimental observations, has been constructed to describe the properties of the manganates in the different [r(A)] regimes. Mechanical milling of a stoichiometric mixture of Bi2O3 and V2O5 yielded nanosized powders of bismuth vanadate, Bi2VO5.5 (BN). Structural evolution of the desired BiV phase, through an intermediate product (BiVO4), was monitored by subjecting the powders, ball milled for various durations to X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) studies. XRD studies indicate that the relative amount of the BiV phase present in the ball-milled mixture increases with increase in milling time and its formation reaches completion within 54 h of milling. Assynthesized powders were found to stabilize in the high-temperature tetragonal (gamma) phase. DTA analyses of the powders milled for various durations suggest that the BN phase-formation temperature decreases with increase in milling time. The nanometric size (30 nm) of the crystallites in the final product was confirmed by TEM and XRD studies. TEM studies clearly demonstrate the growth of BiV on Bi2O3 crystallites. Several vanadium, tungsten, and molybdenum oxide bronzes have been prepared using microwave irradiation. Metal oxides and alkali metal iodides were used as starting materials, Intermittent grinding and inert atmosphere were found to be necessary for the synthesis of most of the bronzes, The reaction temperatures are remarkably lower than those employed for conventional synthetic techniques and the microwave assisted reactions proceed at extremely fast rates. The microwave synthesized bronzes consist of particles having long, rectangular rod-like morphology. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

When synchronous motion does not exist, it is not possible to draw the classical mode shapes. In this paper, a representative shape of motion during free vibration of a non-classically damped system is sought. It is noted that this shape provides an optimal representation of free motion. Interpretations of the optimality thus introduced are presented. Their connection with non-proportionality of damping and of gyroscopy is brought out. In the spirit of the optimality presented in this paper, two indices of non-proportionality are defined. Properties of these indices are discussed. Comparison with other indices of non-proportionality available in the literature is presented. Illustrative examples are given. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

Synthesis and characterization of electrical and magnetic properties of ilmenite phases of the type MnTi1-xNbxO3 have been carried out. Single phase materials could be obtained for 0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.25. The electrical conductivity increases with increasing Nb content. Magnetic susceptibility studies show that the phases exhibit 2D antiferromagnetic behavior. The magnetic susceptibility data has been analyzed using Fisher's specific heat to determine the long range ordering temperature, (C) 1998 Academic Press.

Although the prevalent mathematical description of the Poynting-Robertson effect is correct, its physical interpretation is sometimes problematic. By means of a two-parameter model, we revisit the effect in order to get a better physical understanding of it. The principal conclusion is that the motion of a dust in circumsolar orbit is governed only by solar radiation absorption and not by the asymmetry of reemission, even when viewed in the rest-frame of the Sun. This paper deals with the ergodic properties of hybrid systems modelled by diffusion processes with state-dependent switching. We investigate the sufficient conditions expressed in terms of the parameters of the underlying process which would ensure the existence of a unique invariant probability and stability in distribution of the flow. It turns out that the conditions would depend on certain averaging mechanisms over the states of the discrete component of the hybrid system. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

Fine particle and large surface area Cu/CeO2 catalysts of crystallite sizes in the range of 100-200 Angstrom synthesized by the solution combustion method have been investigated for NO reduction. Five percent Cu/CeO2 catalyst shows nearly 100% conversion of NO by NH3 below 300 degrees C, whereas pure ceria and Zr, Y, and Ca doped ceria show 85-95% NO conversion above 600 degrees C. Similarly NO reduction by CO has been observed over 5% Cu/CeO2 with nearly 100% conversion below 300 degrees C. Hydrocarbon (n-butane) oxidation by NO to CO2, N-2, and H2O has also been demonstrated over this catalyst below 350 degrees C making Cu/CeO2 a new NO reduction catalyst in the low temperature window of 150-350 degrees C. Kinetics of NO reduction over 5% Cu/CeO2 have also been investigated. The rate constants are in the range of 1.4 x 10(4) to 2.3 x 10(4) cm(3) g(-1) s(-1) between 170 and 300 degrees C. Cu/CeO2 catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy where Cu2+ ions are shown to be dispersed on the CeO2 surface. The adsorption of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) onto alumina has been studied as a function of pH, both individually and in the presence of each other. The adsorption density of PAA is found to decrease with an increase of pH while that of PVA shows the opposite trend. In a binary system containing PAA and PVA, the presence of PVA does not affect the adsorption of PAA onto alumina, but the addition of PAA diminishes the adsorption of PVA in the pH range investigated. The adsorption isotherm of PAA at acidic pH exhibits high-affinity Langmuirian behavior. The isotherms for PVA appear rounded and are of the low-affinity type, Once again the adsorption isotherms of PAA remain unaltered in the presence of PVA whereas those of PVA are significantly affected resulting in a lowering of the adsorption density consequent to PAA addition. A variation in the sequence of addition of PAA and PVA does not affect the adsorption behavior of either of the polymers, The electrokinetic behavior of alumina with PAA is hardly influenced by the addition of PVA, On the other hand, the electrophoretic mobility of alumina in the presence of PVA is significantly altered in the presence of PAA and closely resembles the trend observed with PAA alone. Desorption studies reveal that over 80% of PVA could be desorbed in the pH range 3-9 whereas in the case of PAA, the percent desorption increases from 20 to about 70% as the pH is increased from about 3 to 8. Solution conductivity tests confirm interaction of aluminum species and PAA in the bulk solution. FTIR spectroscopic data provide evidence in support of hydrogen bonding and chemical interaction in the case of the PAA-alumina system and hydrogen bonding with respect to the PVA-alumina interaction. Cross-polarization from the dipolar reservoir for a range of mismatched Hartmann-Hahn conditions has been considered. Experiment, in general, agrees with the dispersive Lorentzian behavior expected on the basis of quasi-equilibrium theory. It is observed that inclusion of additional mechanisms of polarization transfer lead to an improvment of the fit of the experimental results. The utility of extending the technique to the case of ordered long chain molecules, such as liquid crystals, for the measurement of the local dipolar field is also presented. Particulate composites based on polymer matrices generally contain fillers, especially those that are abundantly available and are cheaper. The inclusion of these, besides improving the properties, makes the system costwise viable, In the present study, fly ash was tried as a filler in epoxy. The filler particle surfaces were modified using three chemical surface treatment techniques in order to elicit the effect of adhesion at the interface on the mechanical properties of these composites. The compatibilizing of the filler with the use of a silane coupling agent yielded the best compression strength values. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) has been used to characterize and supplement the mechanical test data.

Site disorder of Co3+ ions in sputtered films of lithium cobaltite has been examined using infrared spectroscopy. Both transmission and reflectance modes have been used to characterize the nature of IR absorption. It is found that Co3+ in the sputtered films occupy two types of octahedral sites that differ in the nature of second-neighbor environment. Li+ ions exhibit two bands, which may arise from tetrahedral and octahedral site occupancies or from the presence of disordered regions in the films. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science (USA).

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against secreted hemagglutinin (H) protein of rinderpest virus (RPV) expressed by a recombinant baculovirus were generated to characterize the antigenic sites on H protein and regions of functional significance. Three of the mAbs displayed hemagglutination inhibition activity and these mAbs were unable to neutralize virus infectivity. Western immunoblot analysis of overlapping deletion mutants indicated that three mAbs recognize antigenic regions at the extreme carboxy terminus (between amino acids 569 and 609) and the fourth mAb between amino acids 512 and 568. Using synthetic peptides, aa 569-577 and 575-583 were identified as the epitopes for E2G4 and D2F4, respectively. The epitopic domains of A12A9 and E2B6 mAbs were mapped to regions encompassing aa 527-554 and 588-609. Two epitopes spanning the extreme carboxy terminal region of aa 573 to 587 and 588 to 609 were shown to be immunodominant employing a competitive ELISA with polyclonal sera form vaccinated cattle. The D2F4 mAb which recognizes a unique epitope on RPV-H is not present on the closely related peste des petits ruminant virus FIN protein and this mAb could serve as a tool in the seromonitoring program after rinderpest vaccination. The removal of noise and outliers from measurement signals is a major problem in jet engine health monitoring. Topical measurement signals found in most jet engines include low rotor speed, high rotor speed. fuel flow and exhaust gas temperature. Deviations in these measurements from a baseline 'good' engine are often called measurement deltas and the health signals used for fault detection, isolation, trending and data mining. Linear filters such as the FIR moving average filter and IIR exponential average filter are used in the industry to remove noise and outliers from the jet engine measurement deltas. However, the use of linear filters can lead to loss of critical features in the signal that can contain information about maintenance and repair events that could be used by fault isolation algorithms to determine engine condition or by data mining algorithms to learn valuable patterns in the data, Non-linear filters such as the median and weighted median hybrid filters offer the opportunity to remove noise and gross outliers from signals while preserving features. In this study. a comparison of traditional linear filters popular in the jet engine industry is made with the median filter and the subfilter weighted FIR median hybrid (SWFMH) filter. Results using simulated data with implanted faults shows that the SWFMH filter results in a noise reduction of over 60 per cent compared to only 20 per cent for FIR filters and 30 per cent for IIR filters. Preprocessing jet engine health signals using the SWFMH filter would greatly improve the accuracy of diagnostic systems. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
