An innovative technique to obtain high-surface-area mesostructured carbon (2545m(2)g(-1)) with significant microporosity uses Teflon as the silica template removal agent. This method not only shortens synthesis time by combining silica removal and carbonization in a single step, but also assists in ultrafast removal of the template (in 10min) with complete elimination of toxic HF usage. The obtained carbon material (JNC-1) displays excellent CO2 capture ability (ca. 26.2wt% at 0 degrees C under 0.88bar CO2 pressure), which is twice that of CMK-3 obtained by the HF etching method (13.0wt%). JNC-1 demonstrated higher H-2 adsorption capacity (2.8wt%) compared to CMK-3 (1.2wt%) at -196 degrees C under 1.0bar H-2 pressure. The bimodal pore architecture of JNC-1 led to superior supercapacitor performance, with a specific capacitance of 292Fg(-1) and 182Fg(-1) at a drain rate of 1Ag(-1) and 50Ag(-1), respectively, in 1m H2SO4 compared to CMK-3 and activated carbon.

A composite of manganese oxide and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is prepared in a single step electrochemical reduction process in a phosphate buffer solution for studying as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The novel composite catalyst, namely, MnOx-Pi-rGO, is electrodeposited from a suspension of graphene oxide (GO) in a neutral phosphate buffer solution containing KMnO4. The manganese oxide incorporates phosphate ions and deposits on the rGO sheet, which in turn is formed on the substrate electrode by electrochemical reduction of GO in the suspension. The OER is studied with the MnOx-Pi-rGO catalyst in a neutral phosphate electrolyte by linear sweep voltammetry. The results indicate a positive influence of rGO in the catalyst. By varying the ratio of KMnO4 and GO in the deposition medium and performing linear sweep voltammetry for the OER, the optimum composition of the deposition medium is obtained as 20 mM KMnO4 + 6.5% GO in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution of pH 7. Under identical conditions, the MnOx-Pi-rGO catalyst exhibits 6.2 mA cm(-2) OER current against 2.9 mA cm(-2) by MnOx-Pi catalyst at 2.05 V in neutral phosphate solution. The Tafel slopes measured for OER at MnOx-Pi and MnOx-Pi-rGO are similar in magnitude at about 0.180 V decade(-1). The high Tafel slopes are attributed to partial dissolution of the catalyst during oxygen evolution. The O-2 evolved at the catalyst is measured by the water displacement method and the positive role of rGO on catalytic activity of MnOx-Pi is demonstrated.

We report the synthesis of ZnO nanowires in ambient air at 650 degrees C by a single-step vapor transport method using two different sources Zn (ZnO nanowires-I) and Zn:Cu (ZnO nanowires-II). The Zn:Cu mixed source co-vaporize Zn with a small amount of Cu at temperatures where elemental Cu source does not vaporize. This method provides us a facile route for Cu doping into ZnO. The aspect ratio of the grown ZnO nanowires-II was found to be higher by more than five times compared ZnO nanowires-I. Photocatalytic activity was measured by using a solar simulator and its ultraviolet-filtered light. The ZnO nanowires-II shows higher catalytic activity due to increased aspect ratio and higher content of surface defects because of incorporation of Cu impurities.

General propagation properties and universal curves are given for double clad single mode fibers with inner cladding index higher or lower than the outer cladding index, using the parameter: inner cladding/core radii ratio. Mode cut-off conditions are also examined for the cases. It is shown that dispersion properties largely differ from the single clad single mode fiber case, leading to large new possibilities for extension of single mode operation for large wavelength tange. Paper demonstrates that how substantially we can extend the single mode operation range by using the raised inner cladding fiber. Throughout we have applied our own computations technique to find out the eigenvalue for a given modes. Detail derivations with all trivial mathematics for eigenmode equation are derived for each case. Paper also demonstrates that there is not much use of using depressed inner cladding fiber. We have also concluded that using the large inner cladding/inner core radius we can significantly increase the single mode operation range for the large wavelength region. (C) 2015 Elsevier GmbH. Separation of metallic from semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes has been a major challenge for some time and some previous efforts have resulted in partial success. We have accomplished the separation effectively by employing fluorous chemistry wherein the diazonium salt of 4-heptadecafluorooc tylaniline selectively reacts with the metallic nanotubes present in the mixture of nanotubes. The resulting fluoroderivative was extracted in perfluorohexane leaving the semiconducting nanotubes in the aqueous layer. The products have been characterized by both Raman and electronic absorption spectroscopy. The method avoids the cumbersome centrifugation step required by some other procedures.

As-deposited high Tc superconducting Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x films with zero resistance temperatures of similar, equals89 K and critical current densities about 0.7×106 A/cm2 at 77 K have been reproducibly fabricated at a substrate holder temperature at 650°C, using pulsed laser deposition, without post-annealing. One key to these results is the injection of gaseous oxygen into laser produced plume just in front of the target. In this way, the correct amount of oxygen is incorporated into the as-grown film so that post-deposition treatment becomes unnecessary. Axial ion channeling in these as-deposit high Tc superconducting films on (100) SrTiO3 and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) on the film surfaces were performed. Angular yield profile near the film surface for Ba, and the surface peak intensity were measured using 3 MeV He ions. For channeling normal to the substrate a minimum yield of 7%, compared to similar, equals3% for single crystals, was obtained. The results of ion channeling and XPS studies indicate that the as-deposited films have good crystallinity as well as toichiometry to within similar, equals1 nm of the film surface. The in-situ growth of such high Tc and Jc films is an important step in the use of the laser deposition technique to fabricate multilayer structures and the surface perfection is of importance in tunneling devices such as Josephson junctions.

The insulated mast scheme for the lightning protection system can be found in a few practical designs. Many advantages over conventional protection system are some times envisaged. However, the technical literature on the analysis of such schemes and further quantification of their protection efficacy is rather scarce. As a first step to address this problem, the present work is taken up and the potential rise at the top and ground end currents in insulating mast scheme with single tower is investigated for several tower heights and pertinent values of other parameters. The quantities that are investigated are the potential difference across the insulation and ground end currents for both tower and the ground wires. Quantifications are carried out for the relevant range of stroke current front times. The influence of number of ground wires, their earthing location and to a limited extent, the length of the insulating support have been ascertained. Some relevant discussion on insulation strength is made. These findings are quite novel and aid in quantification of the practical efficacy of the insulated mast scheme. The level of induction to the support tower and possible flashover to the same are not in favour of this scheme.

In this paper, a simple single-phase grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverter topology consisting of a boost section, a low-voltage single-phase inverter with an inductive filter, and a step-up transformer interfacing the grid is considered. Ideally, this topology will not inject any lower order harmonics into the grid due to high-frequency pulse width modulation operation. However, the nonideal factors in the system such as core saturation-induced distorted magnetizing current of the transformer and the dead time of the inverter, etc., contribute to a significant amount of lower order harmonics in the grid current. A novel design of inverter current control that mitigates lower order harmonics is presented in this paper. An adaptive harmonic compensation technique and its design are proposed for the lower order harmonic compensation. In addition, a proportional-resonant-integral (PRI) controller and its design are also proposed. This controller eliminates the dc component in the control system, which introduces even harmonics in the grid current in the topology considered. The dynamics of the system due to the interaction between the PRI controller and the adaptive compensation scheme is also analyzed. The complete design has been validated with experimental results and good agreement with theoretical analysis of the overall system is observed.

Proofreading/editing in protein synthesis is essential for accurate translation of information from the genetic code. In this article we present a theoretical investigation of efficiency of a kinetic proofreading mechanism that employs hydrolysis of the wrong substrate as the discriminatory step in enzyme catalytic reactions. We consider aminoacylation of tRNA(Ile) which is a crucial step in protein synthesis and for which experimental results are now available. We present an augmented kinetic scheme and then employ methods of stochastic simulation algorithm to obtain time dependent concentrations of different substances involved in the reaction and their rates of formation. We obtain the rates of product formation and ATP hydrolysis for both correct and wrong substrates (isoleucine and valine in our case, respectively), in single molecular enzyme as well as ensemble enzyme kinetics. The present theoretical scheme correctly reproduces (i) the amplitude of the discrimination factor in the overall rates between isoleucine and valine which is obtained as (1.8x10(2)).(4.33x10(2)) = 7.8x10(4), (ii) the rates of ATP hydrolysis for both Ile and Val at different substrate concentrations in the aminoacylation of tRNA(Ile). The present study shows a non-michaelis type dependence of rate of reaction on tRNA(Ile) concentration in case of valine. The overall editing in steady state is found to be independent of amino acid concentration. Interestingly, the computed ATP hydrolysis rate for valine at high substrate concentration is same as the rate of formation of Ile-tRNA(Ile) whereas at intermediate substrate concentration the ATP hydrolysis rate is relatively low. We find that the presence of additional editing domain in class I editing enzyme makes the kinetic proofreading more efficient through enhanced hydrolysis of wrong product at the editing CP1 domain.

Chalcopyrite Cu(In,Al)Se-2 (CIAS) thin films are grown on stainless steel substrate through one-step electrodeposition at room temperature. Indium is partially replaced with aluminum to increase the band gap of CuInSe2 without creating significant change in the original structure. The deposition potential is optimized at -0.8 V (vs. SCE) and annealing of the films is performed in vacuum to remove binary phases present in the as-deposited films. In/Al ratio is varied from 1/9 to 8/2, to find the suitability for solar cell fabrication. For In/Al ratio of less than 8/2, CuAlSe2 phase is formed in the film in addition to the CIAS phase. Depth profile X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the CIAS sample prepared with In/Al ratio of 8/2 in the precursor solution confirmed the existence of single phase CIAS throughout the film. This film showed p-type conductivity while the rest of the samples with In/Al ratio less than 8/2 showed n-type conductivity. The band gap of the film varied from 1.06 to 1.45 eV, with variation in deposition potential. Structural, optical, morphological, compositional and electrical characterizations are carried out to establish the suitability of this film for solar cell fabrication. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Thermal decomposition of propargyl alcohol (C3H3OH), a molecule of interest in interstellar chemistry and combustion, was investigated using a single pulse shock tube in the temperature ranging from 953 to 1262 K. The products identified include acetylene, propyne, vinylacetylene, propynal, propenal, and benzene. The experimentally observed overall rate constant for thermal decomposition of propargyl alcohol was found to be k = 10((10.17 +/- 0.36)) exp(-39.70 +/- 1.83)/RT) s(-1) Ab initio theoretical calculations were carried out to understand the potential energy surfaces involved in the primary and secondary steps of propargyl alcohol thermal decomposition. Transition state theory was used to predict the rate constants, which were then used and refined in a kinetic simulation of the product profile. The first step in the decomposition is C-O bond dissociation, leading to the formation of two important radicals in combustion, OH and propargyl. This has been used to study the reverse OH propargyl radical reaction, about which there appears to be no prior work. Depending on the site of attack, this reaction leads to propargyl alcohol or propenal, one of the major products at temperatures below 1200 K. A detailed mechanism has been derived to explain all the observed products.

The NO2 center dot center dot center dot I supramolecular synthon is a halogen bonded recognition pattern that is present in the crystal structures of many compounds that contain these functional groups. These synthons have been previously distinguished as P, Q, and R types using topological and geometrical criteria. A five step IR spectroscopic sequence is proposed here to distinguish between these synthon types in solid samples. Sets of known compounds that contain the P, Q, and R synthons are first taken to develop IR spectroscopic identifiers for them. The identifiers are then used to create graded IR filters that sieve the synthons. These filters contain signatures of the individual NO2 center dot center dot center dot I synthons and may be applied to distinguish between P, Q, and R synthon varieties. They are also useful to identify synthons that are of a borderline character, synthons in disordered structures wherein the crystal structure in itself is not sufficient to distinguish synthon types, and in the identification of the NO2 center dot center dot center dot I synthons in compounds with unknown crystal structures. This study establishes clear differences for the three different geometries P, Q, and Rand in the chemical differences in the intermolecular interactions contained in the synthons. Our IR method can be conveniently employed when single crystals are not readily available also in high throughput analysis. It is possible that such identification may also be adopted as an input for crystal structure prediction analysis of compounds with unknown crystal structures.

Single crystalline LiTaO3 nanorods (length of 2.5-6 mu m and diameter of 200-500 nm) were synthesized via a facile molten-salt technique. An individual single crystalline nanorod exhibited a piezoelectric coefficient of 8 pm V-1. An improved optical frequency-doubling efficiency was observed in the case of LiTaO3 nanorods as compared to that of cubic crystallites of similar size.

This paper proposes a technique to suppress low-order harmonics for an open-end winding induction motor drive for a full modulation range. One side of the machine is connected to a main inverter with a dc power supply, whereas the other inverter is connected to a capacitor from the other side. Harmonic suppression (with complete elimination of fifth- and seventh-order harmonics) is achieved by realizing dodecagonal space vectors using a combined pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control for the two inverters. The floating capacitor voltage is inherently controlled during the PWM operation. The proposed PWM technique is shown to be valid for the entire modulation range, including overmodulation and six-step mode of operation of the main inverter. Experimental results have been presented to validate the proposed technique.
