In this work, we explore simultaneous design and material selection by posing it as an optimization problem. The underlying principles for our approach are Ashby's material selection procedure and structural optimization. For the simplicity and ease of initial implementation of the general procedure, truss structures under static load are considered in this work in view of maximum stiffness, minimum weight/cost and safety against failure. Along the lines of Ashby's material indices, a new design index is derived for trusses. This helps in choosing the most suitable material for any design of a truss. Using this, both the design space and material database are searched simultaneously using optimization algorithms. The important feature of our approach is that the formulated optimization problem is continuous even though the material selection is an inherently discrete problem.

The local structural information in the near-neighbor region of superionic conducting glass (AgBr)0.4(Ag2O)0.3(GeO2)0.3 has been estimated from the anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS) measurements using Ge and Br K absorption edges. The possible atomic arrangements in the near-neighbor region of this glass were obtained by coupling the results with the least-squares variational method so as to reproduce two differential intensity profiles for Ge and Br as well as the ordinary scattering profile. The coordination number of oxygen around Ge is found to be 3.6 at a distance of 0.176 nm, suggesting the GeO4 tetrahedral unit as the probable structural entity in this glass. Moreover, the coordination number of Ag around Br is estimated as 6.3 at a distance of 0.284 nm, suggesting an arrangement similar to that in crystalline AgBr.

In this article, we report the structure of a 1:1 charge transfer complex between pyridine (PYR) and chloranil (CHL) in solution (CHCl(3)) from the measurement of hyperpolarizability (beta(HRS)) and linear and circular depolarization ratios, D and D', respectively, by the hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique and state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations. Using linearly (electric field vector along X) and circularly polarized incident light, respectively, we have measured two macroscopic depolarization ratios D = I(X,X)(2 omega)/I(X,Z)(2 omega) and D' = I(X,C)(2 omega)/I(Z,C)(2 omega) in the laboratory fixed XYZ frame by detecting the second harmonic (SH) scattered light in a polarization resolved fashion. The stabilization energy and the optical gap calculated through the MP2/cc-pVDZ method using Gaussian09 were not significantly different to distinguish between the cofacial and T-shape structures. Only when the experimentally obtained beta(HRS) and the depolarization ratios, D and D', were matched with the theoretically computed values from single and double configuration interaction (SDCI) calculations performed using the ZINDO-SCRF technique, we concluded that the room temperature equilibrium structure of the complex is cofacial. This is in sharp contrast to an earlier theoretical prediction of the T-shape structure of the complex.

In this paper, several known computational solutions are readily obtained in a very natural way for the linear regulator, fixed end-point and servo-mechanism problems using a certain frame-work from scattering theory. The relationships between the solutions to the linear regulator problem with different terminal costs and the interplay between the forward and backward equations have enabled a concise derivation of the partitioned equations, the forward-backward equations, and Chandrasekhar equations for the problem. These methods have been extended to the fixed end-point, servo, and tracking problems.

We present a fractal coding method to recognize online handwritten Tamil characters and propose a novel technique to increase the efficiency in terms of time while coding and decoding. This technique exploits the redundancy in data, thereby achieving better compression and usage of lesser memory. It also reduces the encoding time and causes little distortion during reconstruction. Experiments have been conducted to use these fractal codes to classify the online handwritten Tamil characters from the IWFHR 2006 competition dataset. In one approach, we use fractal coding and decoding process. A recognition accuracy of 90% has been achieved by using DTW for distortion evaluation during classification and encoding processes as compared to 78% using nearest neighbor classifier. In other experiments, we use the fractal code, fractal dimensions and features derived from fractal codes as features in separate classifiers. While the fractal code is successful as a feature, the other two features are not able to capture the wide within-class variations.

Powder neutron di®raction and Hi-Q neutron di®raction data have been recorded and analysed in order to obtain the local and long range order of Cu in Cu-doped CeO2 with three doping levels of Cu. Rietveld method and MCGR techniques of data analysis for the two types of data reveal that the Cu ion is in the 2+ oxidation state and has a vacancy in its ¯rst coordination shell. These deductions from the data analysis ¯t well with the mechanism of catalysis we propose.

A large class of scattering problems of surface water waves by vertical barriers lead to mixed boundary value problems for Laplace equation. Specific attentions are paid, in the present article, to highlight an analytical method to handle this class of problems of surface water wave scattering, when the barriers in question are non-reflecting in nature. A new set of boundary conditions is proposed for such non-reflecting barriers and tile resulting boundary value problems are handled in the linearized theory of water waves. Three basic poblems of scattering by vertical barriers are solved. The present new theory of non-reflecting vertical barriers predict new transmission coefficients and tile solutions of tile mathematical problems turn out to be extremely simple and straight forward as compared to the solution for other types of barriers handled previously.

In the present study dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been fabricated with a tri-layer photo anode consisting of hydrothermally prepared titania nano tubes (TNT) having a diameter of 9-10 nm and length of several micrometers as outer layer, P25 TiO2 powder as transparent light absorbing middle layer and a compact TiO2 inner layer to improve the adhesion of different layers on a transparent conducting oxide coated substrate. In comparison to cells fabricated using TNTs or P25 alone, the tri-layer DSSCs exhibit an enhanced efficiency of 7.15% with a current density of 17.12 mA cm(-2) under AM 1.5 illumination. The enhancement is attributed to the light scattering generated by TNTs aggregates, reduction in electron transport resistance at the TiO2/dye/electrolyte interface and an improvement in electron life-time. We address a physics-based simplified analytical formulation of the diffusive electrical resistance ( (Omega)) and Seebeck coefficient () in a PbTe nanowire dominated by acoustic phonon scattering under the presence of a low static longitudinal electric field. The use of a second-order nonparabolic electron energy band structure involving a geometry-dependent band gap has been selected in principle to demonstrate that the electron mean free path (MFP) in such a system can reach as low as about 8 nm at room temperature for a 10-nm-wide PbTe nanowire. This is followed by the formulation of the carrier back-scattering coefficient for determination of (Omega) and as functions of wire dimensions, temperature, and the field, respectively. The present analytical formulation agrees well with the available experimental data and may find extensive use in determination of various electrothermal transport phenomena in PbTe-based one-dimensional electron devices.

We have investigated quadratic nonlinearity (beta(HRS)) and linear and circular depolarization ratios (D and D', respectively) of a series of 1:1 complexes of tropyliumtetrafluoroborate as a cation and methyl-substituted benzenes as pi-donors by making polarization resolved hyper-Rayleigh scattering measurements in solution. The measured D and D' values are much lower than the values expected from a typical sandwich or a T-shaped geometry of a complex. In the cation-pi complexes studied here, the D value varies from 1.36 to 1.46 and D' from 1.62 to 1.72 depending on the number of methyl substitutions on the benzene ring. In order to probe it further, beta, D and D' were computed using the Zerner intermediate neglect of differential overlap-correction vector self-consistent reaction field technique including single and double configuration interactions in the absence and presence of BF4- anion. In the absence of the anion, the calculated value of D varies from 4.20 to 4.60 and that of D' from 2.45 to 2.72 which disagree with experimental values. However, by arranging three cation-pi BF4- complexes in a trigonal symmetry, the computed values are brought to agreement with experiments. When such an arrangement was not considered, the calculated beta values were lower than the experimental values by more than a factor of two. This unprecedented influence of the otherwise ``unimportant'' anion in solution on the beta value and depolarization ratios of these cation-pi complexes is highlighted and emphasized in this paper. Changing resonator geometry to boost sound power decouples size and song frequency in a small insect
Resumo:
Despite their small size, some insects, such as crickets, can produce high amplitude mating songs by rubbing their wings together. By exploiting structural resonance for sound radiation, crickets broadcast species-specific songs at a sharply tuned frequency. Such songs enhance the range of signal transmission, contain information about the signaler's quality, and allow mate choice. The production of pure tones requires elaborate structural mechanisms that control and sustain resonance at the species-specific frequency. Tree crickets differ sharply from this scheme. Although they use a resonant system to produce sound, tree crickets can produce high amplitude songs at different frequencies, varying by as much as an octave. Based on an investigation of the driving mechanism and the resonant system, using laser Doppler vibrometry and finite element modeling, we show that it is the distinctive geometry of the crickets' forewings (the resonant system) that is responsible for their capacity to vary frequency. The long, enlarged wings enable the production of high amplitude songs; however, as a mechanical consequence of the high aspect ratio, the resonant structures have multiple resonant modes that are similar in frequency. The drive produced by the singing apparatus cannot, therefore, be locked to a single frequency, and different resonant modes can easily be engaged, allowing individual males to vary the carrier frequency of their songs. Such flexibility in sound production, decoupling body size and song frequency, has important implications for conventional views of mate choice, and offers inspiration for the design of miniature, multifrequency, resonant acoustic radiators.

Poly (beta-L-malic acid) (PMLA) is a biodegradable polymer and it has various important applications in the biomedical field. In the present work the structural and spectral characteristics of PMLA have been studied by methods of infrared. Raman spectroscopy and quantum chemistry. Electrostatic potential surface, optimized geometry, harmonic vibrational frequencies, infrared intensities and activities of Raman scattering were calculated by density functional theory (DFT) using oligomeric approach employing B3LYP with complete relaxation in the potential energy surface using 6-311++G (d, p) basis set. Based on results, we have discussed the correlation between the vibrational modes and the structure of the PMLA. A complete analysis of the experimental infrared and Raman spectra has been reported on the basis of wavenumber of the vibrational bands and potential energy distribution. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies shows that charge transfer occur within the molecule. The calculated infrared and the Raman spectra of the polymer based on DFT calculations show reasonable agreement with the experimental results. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
