The π-electronic excitations and excited-state geometries of trans-stilbene (tS) are found by combining exact solutions of the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) model and semiempirical Parametric Method 3 (PM3) calculations. Comprehensive comparisons with tS spectra are obtained and related to the fluorescence and topological alternation of poly(paraphenylenevinylene) (PPV). The one-photon absorption and triplet of tS correspond, respectively, to singlet and triplet bipolarons confined to two phenyls, while the tS2- ground state is a confined charged bipolaron. Independent estimates of the relaxation energy between vertical and adiabatic excitation show the bipolaron binding energy to depend on both charge and spin, as expected for interacting π electrons in correlated or molecular states. Complete configuration interaction within the PPP model of tS accounts for the singlet-triplet gap, for the fine-structure constants and triplet-triplet spectra, for two-photon transitions and intensities, and for one-photon spectra and the radiative lifetime, although the relative position of nearly degenerate covalent and ionic singlets is not resolved. The planar PM3 geometry and low rotational barrier of tS agree with resolved rotational and vibrational spectra in molecular beams. PM3 excitation and relaxation energies for tS bipolarons are consistent with experiment and with PPP results. Instead of the exciton model, we interpret tS excitations in terms of states that are localized on each ring or extended over an alternating chain, as found exactly in Hückel theory, and find nearly degenerate transitions between extended and localized states in the singlet, triplet, and dianion manifolds. The large topological alternation of the extended system increases the ionicity and interchanges the order of the lowest one- and two-photon absorption of PPV relative to polyenes.

A fairly comprehensive computer program incorporating explicit expressions for the four-pole parameters of concentric-tube resonators, plug mufflers, and three-duct cross-flow perforated elements has been used for parametric studies. The parameters considered are hole diameter, the center-to-center distance between consecutive holes (which decides porosity), the incoming mean flow Mach number, the area expansion ratio, the number of partitions of chambers within a given overall shell length, and the relative lengths of these partitions or chambers, all normalized with respect to the exhaust pipe diameter. Transmission loss has been plotted as a function of a normalized frequency parameter. Additionally, the effect of the tail pipe length on insertion loss for an anechoic source has also been studied. These studies have been supplemented by empirical expressions for the normalized static pressure drop for different types of perforated-element mufflers developed from experimental observations.

The sawdust stove, classically known for several decades, is considered here in a scientific study. The poor ignition characteristics and smoky start up are related to improper geometric dimensions. Based on a parametric study, the startup procedure and the dimensions of the stove were modified to achieve a smooth start up. Also, the range of acceptable fuels was enlarged to include tiny unprocessed dry twigs, weeds and wood sticks o the extent of about 50%, with the rest being sawdust-like material. The efficiency of the stove was measured to be 30–40%, depending on the relative size and shape of the vessel and the power level of the stove. A simple procedure for designing this class of stove for various power levels, as well as burning times, is presented. A new concept of multiport design is also discussed.

The near orifice spray breakup at low GLR (gas to liquid ratio by mass) values in an effervescent atomizer is studied experimentally using water as a simulant and air as atomizing gas. From the visualizations, the near orifice spray structures are classified into three modes: discrete bubble explosions, continuous bubble explosions and annular conical spray. The breakup of the spray is quantified in terms of the mean bubble bursting distance from the orifice. The parametric study indicates that the mean bubble bursting distance mainly depends on airflow rate, jet diameter and mixture velocity. It is also observed that the jet diameter has a dominant effect on the bubble bursting distance when compared to mixture velocity at a given airflow rate. The mean bubble bursting distance is shown to be governed by a nondimensional two-phase flow number consisting of all the aforementioned parameters. The location of bubble bursting is found to be highly unsteady spatially, which is influenced by flow dynamics inside the injector. It is proposed that this unsteadiness in jet breakup length is a consequence of varying degree of bubble expansion caused due to the intermittent occurrence of single phase and two-phase flow inside the orifice.

Elliptical conformal transformation was used to derive closed form expressions for the equivalent circuit series inductance and shunt capacitance per period of a serpentine folded-waveguide slow-wave structure including the effects of the beam-hole. The lumped parameters were subsequently interpreted for the dispersion and interaction impedance characteristics of the structure. The analysis was benchmarked for two typical millimeter-wave structures operating in Ka- and W-bands, against measurement, 3D electromagnetic modeling using CST Microwave Studio, parametric analysis and equivalent circuit analysis. In this numerical study, the unsteady laminar incompressible boundary-layer flow over a continuously stretching surface has been investigated when the velocity of the stretching surface varies arbitrarily with time. Both the nodal and the saddle point regions of flow have been considered for the analysis. Also, constant wall temperature/concentration and constant heat/mass flux at the stretching surface have been taken into account. The quasilinearisation method with an implicit finite-difference scheme is used in the nodal point region (0 less-than-or-equal-to c less-than-or-equal-to 1) where c denotes the stretching ratio. This method fails in the saddle point region (-1 less-than-or-equal-to c less-than-or-equal-to 0) due to the occurrence of reverse flow in the y-component of velocity. In order to overcome this difficulty, the method of parametric differentiation with an implicit finite-difference scheme is used, where the values at c = 0 are taken as starting values. Results have been obtained for the stretching velocities which are accelerating and decelerating with time. Results show that the skin friction, the heat transfer and the mass transfer parameters respond significantly to the time dependent stretching velocities. Suction (A > 0) is found to be an important parameter in obtaining convergent solution in the case of the saddle point region of flow. The Prandtl number and the Schmidt number strongly affect the heat and mass transfer of the diffusing species, respectively.

An approximate dynamic programming (ADP)-based suboptimal neurocontroller to obtain desired temperature for a high-speed aerospace vehicle is synthesized in this paper. A I-D distributed parameter model of a fin is developed from basic thermal physics principles. "Snapshot" solutions of the dynamics are generated with a simple dynamic inversion-based feedback controller. Empirical basis functions are designed using the "proper orthogonal decomposition" (POD) technique and the snapshot solutions. A low-order nonlinear lumped parameter system to characterize the infinite dimensional system is obtained by carrying out a Galerkin projection. An ADP-based neurocontroller with a dual heuristic programming (DHP) formulation is obtained with a single-network-adaptive-critic (SNAC) controller for this approximate nonlinear model. Actual control in the original domain is calculated with the same POD basis functions through a reverse mapping. Further contribution of this paper includes development of an online robust neurocontroller to account for unmodeled dynamics and parametric uncertainties inherent in such a complex dynamic system. A neural network (NN) weight update rule that guarantees boundedness of the weights and relaxes the need for persistence of excitation (PE) condition is presented. Simulation studies show that in a fairly extensive but compact domain, any desired temperature profile can be achieved starting from any initial temperature profile. Therefore, the ADP and NN-based controllers appear to have the potential to become controller synthesis tools for nonlinear distributed parameter systems.

The issue of dynamic spectrum scene analysis in any cognitive radio network becomes extremely complex when low probability of intercept, spread spectrum systems are present in environment. The detection and estimation become more complex if frequency hopping spread spectrum is adaptive in nature. In this paper, we propose two phase approach for detection and estimation of frequency hoping signals. Polyphase filter bank has been proposed as the architecture of choice for detection phase to efficiently detect the presence of frequency hopping signal. Based on the modeling of frequency hopping signal it can be shown that parametric methods of line spectral analysis are well suited for estimation of frequency hopping signals if the issues of order estimation and time localization are resolved. An algorithm using line spectra parameter estimation and wavelet based transient detection has been proposed which resolves above issues in computationally efficient manner suitable for implementation in cognitive radio. The simulations show promising results proving that adaptive frequency hopping signals can be detected and demodulated in a non cooperative context, even at a very low signal to noise ratio in real time.

Diabetes is a long-term disease during which the body's production and use of insulin are impaired, causing glucose concentration level to increase in the bloodstream. Regulating blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible leads to a substantial decrease in long-term complications of diabetes. In this paper, an intelligent online feedback-treatment strategy is presented for the control of blood glucose levels in diabetic patients using single network adaptive critic (SNAC) neural networks (which is based on nonlinear optimal control theory). A recently developed mathematical model of the nonlinear dynamics of glucose and insulin interaction in the blood system has been revised and considered for synthesizing the neural network for feedback control. The idea is to replicate the function of pancreatic insulin, i.e. to have a fairly continuous measurement of blood glucose and a situation-dependent insulin injection to the body using an external device. Detailed studies are carried out to analyze the effectiveness of this adaptive critic-based feedback medication strategy. A comparison study with linear quadratic regulator (LQR) theory shows that the proposed nonlinear approach offers some important advantages such as quicker response, avoidance of hypoglycemia problems, etc. Robustness of the proposed approach is also demonstrated from a large number of simulations considering random initial conditions and parametric uncertainties. The contributions of full-wake dynamics in trim analysis are demonstrated for finding the control inputs and periodic responses simultaneously, as well as in Floquet eigenanalysis for finding the damping levels. The equations of flap bending, lag bending, and torsion are coupled with a three-dimensional, finite state wake, and low-frequency (<1/rev) to high frequency (>1/rev) multiblade modes are considered. Full blade-wake dynamics is used in trim analysis and Floquet eigenanalysis. A uniform cantilever blade in trimmed flight is investigated over a range of thrust levels, advance ratios, number of blades, and blade torsional frequencies. The investigation includes the convergence characteristics of control inputs, periodic responses, and damping levels with respect to the number of spatial azimuthal harmonics and radial shape functions in the wake representation. It also includes correlation with the measured lag damping of a three-bladed untrimmed rotor. The parametric study shows the dominant influence of wake dynamics on control inputs, periodic responses, and damping levels, and wake theory generally improves the correlation.

Two new line clipping algorithms, the opposite-corner algorithm and the perpendicular-distance algorithm, that are based on simple geometric observations are presented. These algorithms do not require computation of outcodes nor do they depend on the parametric representations of the lines. It is shown that the opposite-corner algorithm perform consistently better than an algorithm due to Nicholl, Lee, and Nicholl which is claimed to be better than the classic algorithm due to Cohen-Sutherland and the more recent Liang-Barsky algorithm. The pseudo-code of the opposite-corner algorithm is provided in the Appendix.

In this paper, we have developed a method to compute fractal dimension (FD) of discrete time signals, in the time domain, by modifying the box-counting method. The size of the box is dependent on the sampling frequency of the signal. The number of boxes required to completely cover the signal are obtained at multiple time resolutions. The time resolutions are made coarse by decimating the signal. The loglog plot of total number of boxes required to cover the curve versus size of the box used appears to be a straight line, whose slope is taken as an estimate of FD of the signal. The results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method using parametric fractal signals. The estimation accuracy of the method is compared with that of Katz, Sevcik, and Higuchi methods. In ddition, some properties of the FD are discussed.

This paper deals with the use of Stem theory as applied to a clay-water electrolyte system, which is more realistic to understand the force system at micro level man the Gouy-Chapman theory. The influence of the Stern layer on potential-distance relationship has been presented quantitatively for certain specified clay-water systems and the results are compared with the Gouy-Chapman model. A detailed parametric study concerning the number of adsorption spots on the clay platelet, the thickness of the Stern layer, specific adsorption potential and the value of dielectric constant of the pore fluid in the Stern layer, was carried out. This study investigates that the potential obtained at any distance using the Stern theory is higher than that obtained by the Gouy-Chapman theory. The hydrated size of the ion is found to have a significant influence on the potential-distance relationship for a given clay, pore fluid characteristics and valence of the exchangeable ion.

Results of performance measurement of a small cooling capacity laboratory model of an adsorption refrigeration system for thermal management of electronics are compiled. This adsorption cooler was built with activated carbon as the adsorbent and HFC 134a as the refrigerant to produce a cooling capacity under 5 W using waste heat up to 90 degrees C. The thermal compression process is obtained from an ensemble of four solid sorption compressors. Parametric study was conducted with cycle times of 16 and 20 min, heat source temperatures from 73 to 87 degrees C and cooling loads from 3 to 4.9W. Overall system performance is analyzed using two indicators, namely, cooling effectiveness and normalized exergetic efficiency. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We study in great detail a system of three first-order ordinary differential equations describing a homopolar disk dynamo (HDD). This system displays a large variety of behaviors, both regular and chaotic. Existence of periodic solutions is proved for certain ranges of parameters. Stability criteria for periodic solutions are given. The nonintegrability aspects of the HDD system are studied by investigating analytically the singularity structure of the system in the complex domain. Coexisting attractors (including period-doubling sequence) and coexisting strange attractors appear in some parametric regimes. The gluing of strange attractors and the ungluing of a strange attractor are also shown to occur. A period of bifurcation leading to chaos, not observed for other chaotic systems, is shown to characterize the chaotic behavior in some parametric ranges. The limiting case of the Lorenz system is also studied and is related to HDD.
