An experimental system was developed for assessing the role ofhetgenes in heterokaryon formation inNeurosporain nature. Burned sugar cane segments planted in soil were infected using a mixture of mutant ascospores of two genotypes.Neurosporaramified in the cane and erupted as distinct pustules of conidia. When ascospores carried identicalhetalleles, the (macro) conidial pustules which formed were heterokaryotic. On the other hand, when ascospores carried dissimilarhetalleles, the pustules were homokaryotic. These results showed that stable heterokaryons between compatible strains can form in nature. When two strains are growing together on a natural substrate, heterozygosity athetloci serves to maintain their individuality.

Dense ZrB2-SiC (25-30 vol%) composites have been produced by reactive hot pressing using stoichiometric Zr, B4C, C and Si powder mixtures with and without Ni addition at 40 MPa, 1600 degrees C for 60 min. Nickel, a common additive to promote densification, is shown not to be essential; the presence of an ultra-fine microstructure containing a transient plastic ZrC phase is suggested to play a key role at low temperatures, while a transient liquid phase may be responsible at temperatures above 1350 degrees C. Hot Pressing of non-stoichiometric mixture of Zr, B4C and Si at 40 MPa, 1600 degrees C for 30 min resulted in ZrB2-ZrCx-SiC (15 vol%) composites of similar to 98% RD.

Solvothermal treatment of an equimolar mixture of Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O, HCONH2 and NaN3 in MeOH at 100 degrees C yielded a three-dimensional NaCl type network Co(HCOO)(2)(HCONH2)(2) center dot HCONH2 (1a) containing formamides in the pores of the structure. Solvated pink 1a undergoes single crystal-to-single crystal (SCSC) transformation at 215 degrees C to form the desolvated dark brown product Co(HCOO)(2)-( HCONH2)(2) (1b) with the retention of the original framework. Reversible single crystal-to-single crystal transformation of 1b (brown) to 1a (pink) in the presence of excess formamide was also established at room temperature. The coordination environment around Co(II) in both 1a and 1b is octahedral with a CoN2O4 coordination composition. A similar reaction replacing Co(II) by Cr(III) produced a heterometallic 3D extended network Na[Cr(HCOO)(4)(HCONH2)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (2a) at 100 degrees C. An increase in reaction temperature to 150 degrees C produced a simple mononuclear complex Cr(HCOO)(3)(HCONH2)(3) center dot 3H(2)O (2b). Variable temperature magnetic studies revealed the presence of a canting phenomena in both 1a and 1b, and hysteresis loop in the field dependent magnetisation plot at 2 K whereas complex 2a is simply paramagnetic in nature.

Separation of metallic from semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes has been a major challenge for some time and some previous efforts have resulted in partial success. We have accomplished the separation effectively by employing fluorous chemistry wherein the diazonium salt of 4-heptadecafluorooc tylaniline selectively reacts with the metallic nanotubes present in the mixture of nanotubes. The resulting fluoroderivative was extracted in perfluorohexane leaving the semiconducting nanotubes in the aqueous layer. The products have been characterized by both Raman and electronic absorption spectroscopy. The method avoids the cumbersome centrifugation step required by some other procedures.

Choudhuri and Gilman (1987) considered certain implications of the hypothesis that the magnetic flux within the Sun is generated at the bottom of the convection zone and then rises through it. Taking flux rings symmetric around the rotation axis and using reasonable values of different parameters, they found that the Coriolis force deflects these flux rings into trajectories parallel to the rotation axis so that they emerge at rather high latitudes. This paper looks into the question of whether the action of the Coriolis force is subdued when the initial configuration of the flux ring has non-axisymmetries in the form of loop structures. The results depend dramatically on whether the flux ring with the loops lies completely within the convection zone or whether the lower parts of it are embedded in the stable layers underneath the convection zone. In the first case, the Coriolis force supresses the non-axisymmetric perturbations so that the flux ring tends to remain symmetric and the trajectories are very similar to those of Choudhuri and Gilman (1987). In the second case, however, the lower parts of the flux ring may remain anchored underneath the bottom of the convection zone, but the upper parts of the loops still tend to move parallel to the rotation axis and emerge at high latitudes. Thus the problem of the magnetic flux not being able to come out at the sunspot latitudes still persists after the non-axisymmetries in the flux rings are taken into account.

Using a solid-state electrochemical cell incorporating yttria-doped thoria (YDT) as the electrolyte and a mixture of (Mn + MnO) as the reference electrode, standard Gibbs free energy of formation of beta-Ta2O5 has been determined as a function of temperature in the range (1000 to 1300) K. The solid-state electrochemical cell used can be represented as (-)Pt,Ta +Ta2O5//(Y2O3)ThO2//Mn + MnO, Pt(+) Combining the reversible e.m.f. of the cell with recent data on the free energy of formation of MnO, standard Gibbs free energy of formation of Ta2O5 from Ta metal and diatomic oxygen gas (O-2) in the temperature range (1000 to 1300) K is obtained: Delta fG degrees +/- 0.35/(kJ.mol(-1)) = -2004.376 + 0.40445(T/K). Because of the significant solid solubility of oxygen in tantalum, a small correction for the activity of Ta in the metal phase in equilibrium with Ta2O5 is applied. An analysis of the results obtained in this study and other free energy data reported in the literature by the "third law" method suggests the need for refining data for Ta2O5 reported in thermodynamic compilations. Used in the analysis is a revised value for standard entropy of Ta2O5 based on more recent low-temperature heat capacity measurements. An improved set of thermodynamic properties of ditantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) are presented in the temperature range (298.15 to 2200) K. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

BACKGROUND: Particle-based agglutination tests consisting of receptors grafted to colloidal microparticles are useful for detecting small quantities of corresponding ligands of interest in fluid test samples, but detection limits of such tests are limited to a certain concentration and it is most desirable to lower the detection limits and to enhance the rate of recognition of ligands. METHODS: A mixture of receptor-coated colloidal microparticles and corresponding ligand was sandwiched between 2 indium tin oxide-coated glass plates. Electrohydrodynamic drag from an alternating-current electric field applied perpendicular to the plates increased the local concentration of the colloidal particles, improving the chances of ligand-receptor interaction and leading to the aggregation of the colloidal particles. RESULTS: With this technique the sensitivity of the ligand-receptor recognition was increased by a factor as large as 50. CONCLUSIONS: This method can improve the sensitivity of particle-based agglutination tests used in immuno-assays and many other applications such as immunoprecipitation and chemical, sniffing. The half-sandwhich ruthenium chloro complexes bearing chelated diphosphazane ligands, [(eta(5)-Cp)RuCl{kappa(2)-P,P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2)}] [R = C6H3Me2-2,6] (1) and [(eta(5)-Cp*)RuCl{kappa(2)-P, P-X2PN(R)PYY'}] [R = Me, X = Y = Y' = OC6H5 (2); R = CHMe2, X-2 = C20H12O2, Y = Y' = OC6H5 (3) or OC6H4'Bu-4 (4)] have been prepared by the reaction of CpRu(PPh3)(2)Cl with (RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2) [R = C6H3Me2-2,6 (L-1)] or by the reaction of [Cp*RuCl2](n) with X2PN(R)PYY' in the presence of zinc dust. Among the four diastereomers (two enantiomeric pairs) possible for the "chiral at metal" complexes 3 and 4, only two diastereomers (one enantiomeric pair) are formed in these reactions. The complexes 1, 2, 4 and [(eta(5)-Cp)RuCl {kappa(2)-P,P-Ph2PN((S)-*CHMePh)PPhY)] [Y = Ph (5) or N2C3HMe2-3,5 (SCSPRRu)-(6)] react with NaOMe to give the corresponding hydride complexes [(eta(5) -Cp)RuH {kappa(2)-P,P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2)}] (7), [(eta(5)-Cp*)RuH {kappa(2)-P,P'-X2PN(R)PY2)] [R = Me, X = Y = OC6H5 (8); R = CHMe2, X-2 = C20H12O2, Y = OC6H4'Bu-4 (9)] and [(eta(5) -Cp)RuH(kappa(2)-P, P-Ph2PN((S)-*CHMePh)PPhY)][Y =Ph (10) or N2C3HMe2-3,5 (SCSPRRu)(11a) and (SCSPSRu)-(11b)]. Only one enantiomeric pair of the hydride 9 is obtained from the chloro precursor 4 that bears sterically bulky substituents at the phosphorus centers. On the other hand, the optically pure trichiral complex 6 that bears sterically less bulky substituents at the phosphorus gives a mixture of two diastereomers (11a and 11b). Protonation of complex 7 using different acids (HX) gives a mixture of [(eta(5)- Cp)Ru(eta(2)-H-2){kappa(2)-P, P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2))]X (12a) and [(eta(5)-Cp)Ru(H)(2){kappa(2)-P, P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2)}]X (12b) of which 12a is the major product independent of the acid used; the dihydrogen nature of 12a is established by T, measurements and also by synthesizing the deuteride analogue 7-D followed by protonation to obtain the D-H isotopomer. Preliminary investigations on asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of 2-acetonaphthone in the presence of a series of chiral diphosphazane ligands show that diphosphazanes in which the phosphorus centers are strong pi-acceptor in character and bear sterically bulky substituents impart moderate levels of enantioselectivity. Attempts to identify the hydride intermediate involved in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation by a model reaction suggests that a complex of the type, [Ru(H)(Cl){kappa(2)-P,P-X2PN(R)PY2)(solvent)(2)] could be the active species in this transformation. Dansylcadaverine, a cationic fluorescent probe binds to bacterial lipopolysaccharide and lipid A, and is displaced competitively by other compounds which possess affinity toward endotoxins. The binding parameters of dansylcadaverine for lipid A were determined by Scatchard analysis to be two apparently equivalent sites with apparent dissociation constants (Kd) ranging between 16 μM to 26 μM, while that obtained for core glycolipid from Salmonella minnesota Re595 yielded a Kd of 22 μM to 28 μM with three binding sites. The Kd of polymyxin B for lipid A was computed from dansylcadaverine displacement by the method of Horovitz and Levitzki (Horovitz, A., and Levitzki, A. (1987) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 84, 6654–6658). The applicability of this method for analyzing fluorescence data was validated by comparing the Kds of melittin for lipid A obtained by direct Scatchard analysis, and by the Horovitz-Levitzki method. The displacement of dansylcadaverine from lipid A by polymyxin B was distinctly biphasic with Kds for polymyxin B-lipid A interactions corresponding to 0.4 μM and 1.5 μM, probably resulting as a consequence of lipid A being a mixture of mono- and di-phosphoryl species. This was not observed with core glycolipid, for which the Kd for polymyxin was estimated to range from 1.1 μM to 5.8 μM. The use of dansylcadaverine as a displacement probe offers a novel and convenient method of quantitating the interactions of a wide variety of substances with lipid A.

Coating of azobenzene chromophore with multivalent sugar ligands has been accomplished. Such sugar coating allows the study of the isomerization properties of this chromophore in aqueous solutions. The predominantly cis-isomer-containing photostationary state (PS) mixture of these azobenzene derivatives is found to be stable for hours. The rate constants for their isomerization, as well as the Arrhenius activation energies, are determined experimentally. An assessment of the lectin binding properties of the lactoside bearing isomeric azobenzene derivatives, by isothermal calorimetric methods, reveals the existence of an unusual cooperativity in their binding to lectin peanut agglutinin. Thermodynamic parameters evaluated for the trans and the PS mixture are discussed, in detail, for the lactoside bearing bivalent azobenzene derivative.

Polyaniline salts have been synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of phenoxy acetic acid and its two derivatives using emulsion method at room temperature and characterized by different techniques such as infrared, H-1 and C-13 NMR, UV-visible spectroscopy, SEM, wide angle X-ray diffractograms and conductivity measurements. These polyaniline salts have the desirable property of high solubility for processibility in solvents such as DNIF, DMSO and a mixture of CHCl3 and acetone and they exhibit fairly good conductivity of similar to 3.0 x 10(-3) S cm(-1). The variations in solubility, conductivity and morphology with the protonating strength of the dopants are examined.

With a view to understanding the mechanism of the formation of 6-methoxy-2,2-(tetrachloro--phenylenedioxy)-naphthalen-1 (2H)-one (IIIa) in the reaction of 6-methoxy-1-tetralone (Ia) with tetrachloro-1,2-benzoquinone (II), the reaction of (II) with various tetralones and naphthols has been studied. Reaction with either α-tetralone or α-naphthol gives 2,2-(tetrachloro-o-phenylenedioxy)naphthalen-1 (2H)-one (IIIb), whereas reaction with either β-tetralone or β-naphthol gives a mixture of (IIIb) and ,1-(tetrachloro-o-phenylenedioxy)-naphthalen-2 (1H)-one (IX), with the former predominating. Further, reactions of (II) with 7-methoxy-3,4-dihydrophenanthren- 1 (2H)-one and m-methoxyphenol gave respectively 7-methoxy- ,2-(tetrachloro-o- phenylenedioxy)phenanthren-1 (2H)-one (VII) and 3-methoxy-6,6-(tetrachloro-o- phenylenedioxy)cyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-one (VIII). Structures of all these compounds have been proved on the basis of i.r. and n.m.r. data. The pathway to the formation of the condensates (III) is discussed.

It was found that ceric oxalate is an intermediate product in the oxidation of oxalic acid by ammonium hexanitrato cerate in solvents such as acetonitrile, and a mixture of acetonitrile and glacial acetic acid. Conditions for the formation of ceric oxalate and its decomposition into carbon dioxide and cerous oxalate have been studied. An analytical method for the estimation of oxalic acid in non-aqueous media has been evolved based on this reaction.

RECENT work on the lower oxide of sulphur1,2 has established that disulphur monoxide (S2O) or its polymeric form is produced when sulphur is burnt in oxygen under reduced pressure. It has now been shown that it is possible to make use of an oxide of a heavy metal as a source of limited supply of oxygen to prepare the disulphur monoxide. For example, when a mixture of finely powdered cupric oxide and sulphur (1 : 5 by weight) is heated under vacuum in a glass tube gaseous products are evolved. which, on cooling in a trap surrounded by liquid air, will give an orange-red condensate (S2O)x. This condensate also gives off sulphur dioxide in stages as the temperature is raised, finally leaving a residue of elemental sulphur. Copper sulphide and excess of sulphur are left behind in the reaction tube.

Pseudo-acid chlorides of five 4′-substituted o-benzoylbenzoic acids are converted into a mixture of dilactones with sodium iodide in acetone. The meso-isomer is always formed to a larger extent than the (±)-mixture. These results imply that the radicals involved are not planar.
