Langevin dynamics simulation studies have been employed to calculate the temperature dependent free energy surface and folding characteristics of a 500 monomer long linear alkane (polyethylene) chain with a realistic interaction potential. Both equilibrium and temperature quench simulation studies have been carried out. Using the shape anisotropy parameter (S) of the folded molecule as the order parameter, we find a weakly first order phase transition between the high-temperature molten globule and low-temperature rodlike crystalline states separated by a small barrier of the order of k(B)T. Near the melting temperature (580 K), we observe an intriguing intermittent fluctuation with pronounced ``1/f noise characteristics'' between these two states with large difference in shape and structure. We have also studied the possibilities of different pathways of folding to states much below the melting point. At 300 K starting from the all-trans linear configuration, the chain folds stepwise into a very regular fourfold crystallite with very high shape anisotropy. Whereas, when quenched from a high temperature (900 K) random coil regime, we identify a two step transition from the random coiled state to a molten globulelike state and, further, to a anisotropic rodlike state. The trajectory reveals an interesting coupling between the two order parameters, namely, radius of gyration (R-g) and the shape anisotropy parameter (S). The rodlike final state of the quench trajectory is characterized by lower shape anisotropy parameter and significantly larger number of gauche defects as compared to the final state obtained through equilibrium simulation starting from all-trans linear chain. The quench study shows indication of a nucleationlike pathway from the molten globule to the rodlike state involving an underlying rugged energy landscape. The ipso/cine ratio in the amination of 5-bromo-2,3-benzo- or 2-bromo-4,5-benzotropone shows a dependence upon the temperature at which the reaction is conducted, changing in favour of the ipso-product when the temperature is maintained high, ruling out an aryne-type mechanism. A comparison of independent mechanisms envisaged for the formation of the two isomeric products suggests a two-part reason: (i) at a higher reaction temperature, C-protonation, a step necessary for the formation of the cine-product, could be retarded when a direct internal mode is interfered with by a less efficient external one, and (ii) reketonisation by elimination of bromide, needed to form the ipso-product, is likely to have a high temperature coefficient enabling the rate of its formation to overtake that of the cine-product.

We propose and develop here a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau-like theory of cuprate high-temperature superconductivity. The free energy of a cuprate superconductor is expressed as a functional F of the complex spin-singlet pair amplitude psi(ij) equivalent to psi(m) = Delta(m) exp(i phi(m)), where i and j are nearest-neighbor sites of the square planar Cu lattice in which the superconductivity is believed to primarily reside, and m labels the site located at the center of the bond between i and j. The system is modeled as a weakly coupled stack of such planes. We hypothesize a simple form FDelta, phi] = Sigma(m)A Delta(2)(m) + (B/2)Delta(4)(m)] + C Sigma(< mn >) Delta(m) Delta(n) cos(phi(m) - phi(n)) for the functional, where m and n are nearest-neighbor sites on the bond-center lattice. This form is analogous to the original continuum Ginzburg-Landau free-energy functional; the coefficients A, B, and C are determined from comparison with experiments. A combination of analytic approximations, numerical minimization, and Monte Carlo simulations is used to work out a number of consequences of the proposed functional for specific choices of A, B, and C as functions of hole density x and temperature T. There can be a rapid crossover of

We report a large decrease in tetragonal to cubic phase transformation temperature when grain size of bulk CuFe2O4 is reduced by mechanical ball milling. The change in phase transformation temperature was inferred from in situ high temperature conductivity and x-ray diffraction measurements. The decrease in conductivity with grain size suggests that ball milling has not induced any oxygen vacancy while the role of cation distribution in the observed decrease in phase transformation temperature is ruled out from in-field Fe-57 Mossbauer and extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements. The reduction in the phase transformation temperature is attributed to the stability of structures with higher crystal symmetry at lower grain sizes due to negative pressure effect. Growth and characterization of high-temperature-superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 and several metallic-oxide thin films by pulsed laser deposition is described here. An overview of substrates employed for epitaxial growth of perovskite-related oxides is presented. Ag-doped YBa2Cu3O7 films grown on bare sapphire are shown to give T-c = 90 K, critical current > 10(6) A/cm(2) at 77 K and surface resistance = 450 mu Omega. Application of epitaxial metallic LaNiO3 thin films as an electrode for ferroelectric oxide and as a normal metal layer barrier in the superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction is presented. Observation of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) in the metallic La0-6Pb0-4MnO3 thin films up to 50% is highlighted.

Cubic cuprates (a not, vert, similar 18.6 Å) with a BaCuO2-type structure were obtained in the Ba-Pb-Cu-O and Ba-Bi-Cu-O systems by the reaction of the component oxides at a high temperature (1370-1420 K), followed by quenching. By annealing these phases in oxygen at 1070-1120 K, perovskite-like phase (a not, vert, similar 4.3 Å) of the formulae BaPb1-xCuxO3-y and BaBi1-xCuxO3-y (0 < x ? 0.5) were obtained. A perovskite of nominal composition BaPb0.25Tl0.25 Cu0.5O3-y, prepared by a similar procedure, was found to be superconducting with a Tc of not, vert, similar 70 K.

A simple, cost-effective and environment-friendly pathway for preparing highly porous matrix of giant dielectric material CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) through combustion of a completely aqueous precursor solution is presented. The pathway yields phase-pure and impurity-less CCTO ceramic at an ultra-low temperature (700 degrees C) and is better than traditional solid-state reaction schemes which fail to produce pure phase at as high temperature as 1000 degrees C (Li, Schwartz, Phys. Rev. B 75, 012104). The porous ceramic matrix on grinding produced CCTO powder having particle size in submicron order with an average size 300 nm. On sintering at 1050 degrees C for 5 h the powder shows high dielectric constants (>10(4) at all frequencies from 100 Hz to 100 kHz) and low loss (with 0.05 as the lowest value) which is suitable for device applications. The reaction pathway is expected to be extended to prepare other multifunctional complex perovskite materials. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The nature of the phase transitions of Bi2MoO6 has been investigated by the combined use of X-ray diffraction and Xray absorption spectroscopy. The distorted MoO6 octahedra in the low-temperature form are shown to undergo further distortion in the intermediate-temperature form before transforming to MoO4 tetrahedra in the high-temperature phase. We study muon-spin rotation (mu SR) spectra in the mixed phase of highly anisotropic layered superconductors, specifically Bi2+xSr2-xCaCu2O8+delta (BSCCO), by modeling the fluid and solid phases of pancake Vortices using liquid-state and density functional methods. The role of thermal fluctuations in causing motional narrowing of mu SR line shapes is quantified in terms of a first-principles theory of the flux-lattice melting transition. The effects of random point pinning are investigated using a replica treatment of liquid-state correlations and a replicated density functional theory. Our results indicate that motional narrowing in the pure system, although substantial, cannot account for the remarkably small linewidths obtained experimentally at relatively high fields and low temperatures. We find that satisfactory agreement with the mu SR data for BSCCO in this regime can be obtained through the ansatz that this ''phase'' is characterized by frozen short-range positional correlations reflecting the structure of the liquid just above the melting transition. This proposal is consistent with recent suggestions of a ''pinned liquid'' or ''glassy'' state of pancake Vortices in the presence of pinning disorder. Our results for the high-temperature liquid phase indicate that measurable linewidths may be obtained in this phase as a consequence of density inhomogeneities induced by the pinning disorder. The results presented here comprise a unified, first-principles theoretical treatment of mu SR spectra in highly anisotropic layered superconductors in terms of a controlled set of approximations. There is considerable interest currently in developing magnesium based alloys as replacements for aluminum alloys in automobile applications, due to their high specific strength as compared to aluminum alloys. However, the poor formability of magnesium alloys has restricted their applications; superplasticity can be utilized to form components with complex shapes. In the present study, the compressive deformation characteristics of a Mg-0.8 wt% Al alloy with an initial grain size of 19 +/- 1.0 mum have been studied in the temperature range of 623-673 K and at strain rates ranging from 10(-7) to 10(-3) s(-1). The stress exponent was observed to decrease with a decrease in stress. The results are analyzed in terms of the existing theoretical models for high temperature deformation. Furthermore, the potential for superplasticity in this alloy is explored, based on the mechanical and microstructural characteristics of the alloy.

Low-temperature dielectric measurements on FeTiMO(6) (M = Ta,Nb,Sb) rutile-type oxides at frequencies from 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz revealed anomalous dielectric relaxations with frequency dispersion. Unlike the high-temperature relaxor response of these materials, the low-temperature relaxations are polaronic in nature. The relationship between frequency and temperature of dielectric loss peak follows T(-1/4) behavior. The frequency dependence of ac conductivity shows the well-known universal dielectric response, while the dc conductivity follows Mott variable range hopping (VRH) behavior, confirming the polaronic origin of the observed dielectric relaxations. The frequency domain analysis of the dielectric spectra shows evidence for two relaxations, with the high-frequency relaxations following Mott VRH behavior more closely. Significantly, the Cr- and Ga-based analogs, CrTiNbO(6) and GaTiMO(6) (M = Ta,Nb), that were also studied, did not show these anomalies.

Resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) are being widely used to detect low temperature, while thermocouples (TCs) are being used to detect high temperature. The materials suitable for RTDs are platinum, germanium, carbon, carbon-glass, cernox, etc. Here, we have reported the possible application of another form of carbon i.e. carbon nanotubes in low temperature thermometry. It has been shown the resistance R and the sensitivity of carbon nanotube bundles can be tuned and made suitable for ultralow temperature detection. We report on the R-T measurement of carbon nanotube bundles from room temperature down to 1 K to felicitate the possible application of bundles in low temperature RTDs. ©2008 American Institute of Physics

The high temperature ceramic oxide superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-x (1–2–3 compound) is generally synthesized in an oxygen-rich environment. Hence any method for determining its thermodynamic stability should operate at a high oxygen partial pressure. A solid-state cell incorporating CaF2 as the electrolyte and functioning under pure oxygen at a pressure of 1·01 × 105 Pa has been employed for the determination of the Gibbs’ energy of formation of the 1–2–3 compound. The configuration of the galvanic cell can be represented by: Pt, O2, YBa2Cu3O7−x , Y2BaCuO5, CuO, BaF2/CaF2/BaF2, BaZrO3, ZrO2, O2, Pt. Using the values of the standard Gibbs’ energy of formation of the compounds BaZrO3 and Y2BaCuO5 from the literature, the Gibbs’ energy of formation of the 1–2–3 compound from the constituent binary oxides has been computed at different temperatures. The value ofx at each temperature is determined by the oxygen partial pressure. At 1023 K for O content of 6·5 the Gibbs’ energy of formation of the 1–2–3 compound is −261·7 kJ mol−1.

The temperature ranges of thermal and athermal deformation behaviour of nickel are identified by employing the temperature-dependence of flow-stress and strain-rate cycling data. The results are used to present a unified view of dislocation mechanisms of glide encompassing the two thermally activated and the intermediate athermal regimes of plastic flow.In the low-temperature thermally activated region (<250 K) the strain rate is found to be controlled by the repulsive intersection of glide and forest dislocations, in accordance with current ideas. The athermal stress in this region can be attributed mainly to the presence of strong attractive junctions which are overcome by means of Orowan bowing, a small contribution also coming from the elastic interactions between dislocations. The values of activation area and activation energy obtained in the high-temperature region (> 750 K) negate the operation of a diffusion-controlled mechanism. Instead, the data support a thermal activation model involving unzipping of the attractive junctions. The internal (long-range) stress contribution here results solely from the elastic interactions between dislocations. This view concerning the high-temperature plastic flow is further supported by the observation that the Cottrell–Stokes law is obeyed over large strains in the range 750–1200 K.

An equimolar mixture of Ni(NO(3))(2)center dot 6H(2)O and pyridine-2-aldehyde with two equivalents of NaN(3) in methanol in the presence of NaOMe resulted in the formation of light green precipitate which upon crystallization from dimethylformamide (DMF) yielded light green single crystals [{Ni(2)Na(2)(pic)(4)(N(3))(2)(H(2)O)(2)(MeOH)}center dot MeOH center dot 3H(2)O](n) (1) and [{Ni(2)Na(2)(pic)(4)(N(3))(2)(H(2)O)(4)}center dot 2DMF center dot H(2)O](n) (2) (pic = pyridine-2-carboxylate) at room temperature and high temperature (100 degrees C), respectively. Variable temperature magnetic studies revealed the existence of overall ferromagnetic behaviour with J approximate to + 10 cm(-1) and D approximate to -2 to -7 cm(-1) for 1 and 2, respectively. Negative D values as well as variation of D upon slight distortion of structure by varying reaction temperature were observed. The X-band Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectra of both 2 and 3 were recorded below 50 K. The structural distortion was also implicated from the EPR spectra. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on both complexes were performed in two different ways to corroborate the magnetic results. Considering only Ni(2)(II) dimeric unit, results were J = + 20.65 cm(-1) and D = -3.16 cm(-1) for 1, and J = +24.56 cm(-1) and D = -4.67 cm(-1) for 2. However, considering Ni(2)(II)Na(2)(I) cubane as magnetic core the results were J = +16.35 cm(-1) (1), +19.54 cm(-1) (2); D = -3.05 cm(-1) (1), -4.25 cm(-1) (2).
