The finding that peptides containing -amino acid residues give rise to folding patterns hitherto unobserved in -amino acid peptides[1] has stimulated considerable interest in the conformational properties of peptides built from , and residues,[2] as the introduction of additional methylene (CH2) units into peptide chains provides further degrees of conformational freedom.

An exact solution is derived for a boundary-value problem for Laplace's equation which is a generalization of the one occurring in the course of solution of the problem of diffraction of surface water waves by a nearly vertical submerged barrier. The method of solution involves the use of complex function theory, the Schwarz reflection principle, and reduction to a system of two uncoupled Riemann-Hilbert problems. Known results, representing the reflection and transmission coefficients of the water wave problem involving a nearly vertical barrier, are derived in terms of the shape function.

Relative geometric arrangements of the sample points, with reference to the structure of the imbedding space, produce clusters. Hence, if each sample point is imagined to acquire a volume of a small M-cube (called pattern-cell), depending on the ranges of its (M) features and number (N) of samples; then overlapping pattern-cells would indicate naturally closer sample-points. A chain or blob of such overlapping cells would mean a cluster and separate clusters would not share a common pattern-cell between them. The conditions and an analytic method to find such an overlap are developed. A simple, intuitive, nonparametric clustering procedure, based on such overlapping pattern-cells is presented. It may be classified as an agglomerative, hierarchical, linkage-type clustering procedure. The algorithm is fast, requires low storage and can identify irregular clusters. Two extensions of the algorithm, to separate overlapping clusters and to estimate the nature of pattern distributions in the sample space, are also indicated.

A general direct technique of solving a mixed boundary value problem in the theory of diffraction by a semi-infinite plane is presented. Taking account of the correct edge-conditions, the unique solution of the problem is derived, by means of Jones' method in the theory of Wiener-Hopf technique, in the case of incident plane wave. The solution of the half-plane problem is found out in exact form. (The far-field is derived by the method of steepest descent.) It is observed that it is not the Wiener-Hopf technique which really needs any modification but a new technique is certainly required to handle the peculiar type of coupled integral equations which the Wiener-Hopf technique leads to.

The general time dependent source problem has been solved by the method of transforms (Laplace, Lebedev–Kontorovich in succession) and the solution is obtained in the form of an infinite series involving Legendre functions. The solutions in the case of harmonic time dependence and the incident plane wave have been derived from the above solution and are presented in the form of an infinite series. In the case of an incident plane wave, the series has been summed and the final solution involves an improper integral which behaves like a complementary error function for large values of the argument. Finally, the far field evaluation has been shown. The results are compared with those of Sommerfeld's half-plane diffraction problem with unmixed boundary conditions.

A direct transform technique is applied to the initial and boundary value problem involving diffraction of a cylindrical pulse by a half plane, on which impedance type of boundary conditions must be met by the total field. The solution to the time harmonic incident plane wave is deduced as a particular case of the general time-dependent problem considered here and we avoid the Wiener–Hopf technique which leads to very complicated factorization and which masks the role of the impedance factor Z′ (a small quantity) in the expression for the scattered field.

The design of a new microfurnace for use for Laue diffraction studies of solid-state transformations is described. The furnace operates in the temperature range 298-573 K with a thermal stability of about ± 0.1 K. The potential of the synchrotron-radiation Laue diffraction technique for studies of structural phase transitions is demonstrated. Experimental data on phase transitions in caesium periodate, potassium tetrachlorozincate and pentaerythritol are presented.

Pattern Cognition is looked at from the functional view point. The need for knowledge in synthesizing such patterns is explained and various aspects of knowledge-based pattern generation are highlighted. This approach to the generation of patterns is detailed with a concrete example.

We report a single C-13 spin edited selective proton-proton correlation experiment to decipher overcrowded 13C coupled proton NMR spectra of weakly dipolar coupled spin systems. The experiment unravels the masked C-13 satellites in proton spectrum and permits the measurement of one bond carbon-proton residual dipolar couplings in I3S and for each diastereotopic proton in I2S groups. It also provides all the possible homonuclear proton-proton residual couplings which are otherwise difficult to extract from the broad and featureless one dimensional H-1 spectrum, in addition to enantiodifferentiation in a chiral molecule. Employment of heteronuclear (C-13) decoupling in the evolution period results in complete demixing of overlapped signals from enantiomers. The observed anomalous intensity pattern in strongly dipolar coupled methyl protons in methyl selective correlation experiment has been interpreted using polarization operator formalism. In order to describe the atmospheric turbulence which limits the resolution of long-exposure images obtained using ground-based large telescopes, a simplified model of a speckle pattern, reducing the complexity of calculating field-correlations of very high order, is presented. Focal plane correlations are used instead of correlations in the spatial frequency domain. General tripple correlations for a point source and for a binary are calculated and it is shown that they are not a strong function of the binary separation. For binary separations close to the diffraction limit of the telescope, the genuine triple correlation technique ensures a better SNR than the near-axis Knox-Thompson technique. The simplifications allow a complete analysis of the noise properties at all levels of light.

Inovirus is a helical array of alpha-helical protein asymmetric units surrounding a DNA core. X-ray fibre diffraction studies show that the Pf1 species of Inovirus can undergo a reversible temperature-induced transition between two similar structural forms having slightly different virion helix parameters. Molecular models of the two forms show no evidence for altered interactions between the protein and either the solvent or the viral DNA; but there are significant differences in the shape and orientation of the protein asymmetric unit, related to the changes in the virion parameters. Normal modes involving libration of whole asymmetric units are in a frequency range with appreciable entropy of libration, and the structural transition may be related to changes in libration.

The self-complementary DNA fragment CCGGCGCCGG crystallizes in the rhombohedral space group R3 with unit cell parameters a = 54.07 angstrom and c = 44.59 angstrom. The structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods at 2.2 angstrom resolution and refined to an R value of 16.7%. In the crystal, the decamer forms B-DNA double helices with characteristic groove dimensions: compared with B-DNA of random sequence, the minor groove is wide and deep and the major groove is rather shallow. Local base pair geometries and stacking patterns are within the range commonly observed in B-DNA crystal structures. The duplex bears no resemblance to A-form DNA as might have been expected for a sequence with only GC base pairs. The shallow major groove permits an unusual crystal packing pattern with several direct intermolecular hydrogen bonds between phosphate oxygens and cytosine amino groups. In addition, decameric duplexes form quasi-infinite double helices in the crystal by end-to-end stacking. The groove geometries and accessibilities of this molecule as observed in the crystal may be important for the mode of binding of both proteins and drug molecules to G/C stretches in DNA.
