The complex permittivity characteristics of epoxy nanocomposite systems were examined and an attempt has been made to understand the underlying physics governing some of the unique macroscopic dielectric behaviors. The experimental investigations were performed using two different nanocomposite systems with low filler concentrations over the frequency range of 10(-2)-400 Hz, but for some cases, the data has been reported upto 10(6) Hz for a better understanding of the behaviors. Results demonstrate that nanocomposites do possess unique permittivity behaviors as compared to those already known for unfilled polymer and microcomposite systems. The nanocomposite real permittivity and tan delta values are found to be lower than that of unfilled epoxy. In addition, results show that interfacial polarization and charge carrier mobilities are suppressed in epoxy nanocomposite systems. The complex permittivity spectra coupled with the ac conductivity characteristics with respect to frequency was found to be sufficient to identify several of the nanocomposite characteristics like the reduction in permittivity values, reduction in the interfacial polarization mechanisms and the electrical conduction behaviors. Analysis of the results are also performed using electric modulus formalisms and it has been seen that the nanocomposite dielectric behaviors at low frequencies can also be explained clearly using this formalism.

MNDO geometry optimizations were carried out on a series of symmetrically and unsymmetrically coupled strained ring hydrocarbons, R1-R1 and R1–R2 (R1=methyl, cyclopropyl, 1-bicyclo[1.1.0]butyl, 1-bicyclo[1.1.1]pentyl, prismyl, cubyl, 6-tricyclo [3.1.1.03,6]heptyl, and tetrahedryl groups; R2=methyl and cyclopropyl). The remarkable contraction of the C---C bond connecting the strained rings found experimentally in a few cases was reproduced correctly by the calculations. A linear correlation was found between the bond length shortening and the bond angle widening at the corresponding carbon atoms for all the structures considered. The reduction in C---C bond lengths due to various ring systems is additive. The additivity indicates that inter-ring interactions which effect the central bond length are absent and confirms the common electronic origin of bond contraction in these systems, viz. enhanced s-character in the exocyclic bonds of strained rings.

A protein exhibiting immunological cross-reactivity with the chicken egg-white riboflavin carrier protein was detected by radioimmunoassay in the eggs and serum of the fresh water fish Cyprinus carpio and subsequently purified to homogeneity by use of affinity chromatography. Fish riboflavin carrier protein resembled chicken riboflavin carrier protein with respect to most of its physicochemical characteristics. The major epitopes of chicken riboflavin carrier protein were shown to be conserved in the fish protein as probed with monoclonal antibodies to the avian vitamin carrier.

The mechanism underlying homeostatic regulation of the plasma levels of free retinol-binding protein and free thyroxine, the systemic distribution of which is of great importance, has been investigated. A simple method has been developed to determine the rate of dissociation of a ligand from the binding protein. Analysis of the dissociation process of retinol-binding protein from prealbumin-2 reveals that the free retinol-binding protein pool undergoes massive flux, and the prealbumin-2 participates in homeostatic regulation of the free retinol-binding protein pool. Studies on the dissociation process of thyroxine from its plasma carrier proteins show that the various plasma carrier proteins share two roles. Of the two types of protein, the thyroxine-binding globulin (the high affinity binding protein) contributes only 27% of the free thyroxine in a rapid transition process, despite its being the major binding protein. But prealbumin-2, which has lower affinity towards thyroxine, participates mainly in a rapid flux of the free thyroxine pool. Thus thyroxine-binding globulin acts predominantly as a plasma reservoir of thyroxine, and also probably in the buffering action on plasma free thyroxine level, in the long term, while prealbumin-2 participates mainly in the maintainance of constancy of free thyroxine levels even in the short term. The existence of these two types of binding protein facilitates compensation for the metabolic flux of the free ligand and maintenance of the thyroxine pool within a very narrow range.

This work offers a method for finding some exact soliton solutions to coupled relativistic scalar field theories in 1+1 dimensions. The method can yield static solutions as well as quasistatic "charged" solutions for a variety of Lagrangians. Explicit solutions are derived as examples. A particularly interesting class of solutions is nontopological without being either charged or time dependent.

We report a single C-13 spin edited selective proton-proton correlation experiment to decipher overcrowded 13C coupled proton NMR spectra of weakly dipolar coupled spin systems. The experiment unravels the masked C-13 satellites in proton spectrum and permits the measurement of one bond carbon-proton residual dipolar couplings in I3S and for each diastereotopic proton in I2S groups. It also provides all the possible homonuclear proton-proton residual couplings which are otherwise difficult to extract from the broad and featureless one dimensional H-1 spectrum, in addition to enantiodifferentiation in a chiral molecule. Employment of heteronuclear (C-13) decoupling in the evolution period results in complete demixing of overlapped signals from enantiomers. The observed anomalous intensity pattern in strongly dipolar coupled methyl protons in methyl selective correlation experiment has been interpreted using polarization operator formalism. The superconducting transition temperatures in Bi2Ca1−xLnxSr2Cu2O8+δ, TlCa1−xLnxSr2Cu2O6+δ, and Tl0.8Ca1−xLnxBa2Cu23O6+δ (Ln=Y or rare earth) vary with composition and show a maximum at a specific value of x or δ. This observation suggests that an optimal carrier concentration is required to attain maximum Tc in such cuprates which seem to be two‐band systems

Monoclonal antibodies raised against chicken egg white riboflavin carrier protein were classified into seven categories each recognizing a distinct epitope. Of these, six were directed against conformation dependent epitopes and one to a sequential epitope. The roles of lysine residues and the post-translationally attached phosphate and oligosaccharide moieties in the antigenicity of riboflavin carrier protein recognized by the monoclonal antibodies were investigated. The binding region of three monoclonal antibodies could be located within the 87–219 amino acid sequence of the protein and one antibody among these recognized a sequence of 182–204 amino acid residues. All the monoclonal antibodies were able to recognize riboflavin carrier proteins present in the sera of pregnant rats, cows and humans indicating that the epitopes to which they are directed are conserved through evolution from chicken to the human.

Exact traveling-wave solutions of time-dependent nonlinear inhomogeneous PDEs, describing several model systems in geophysical fluid dynamics, are found. The reduced nonlinear ODEs are treated as systems of linear algebraic equations in the derivatives. A variety of solutions are found, depending on the rank of the algebraic systems. The geophysical systems include acoustic gravity waves, inertial waves, and Rossby waves. The solutions describe waves which are, in general, either periodic or monoclinic. The present approach is compared with the earlier one due to Grundland (1974) for finding exact solutions of inhomogeneous systems of nonlinear PDEs.

Coupled substitution of Nb(V) and Si(IV) for Ti(IV) and P(V)/As(V) in KTiOP04 (KTP) and KTiOAsO4 (KTA) giving new series of nonlinear optical materials, KTi1-xNbxOX1-xSixO4 (X=P,As), has been investigated. Substitution up to x = 0.40 readily occurs, the members retaining the orthorhombic (Pna2(1)) structure of KTP. The second harmonic generation (SHG) property of the parent KTP and KTA is not adversely affected by the coupled substitution. SHG intensity of the powder samples of the X = P series shows a slight increase with x up to x = 0.15; for 0.15 < x less-than-or-equal-to 0.40, there is a decrease in SHG intensity as compared to that for KTP. A similar trend in SHG intensity is seen for the arsenic analogs.

A conceptual model is proposed to explain the observed aperiodicity in the short term climate fluctuations of the tropical coupled ocean-atmosphere system. This is based on the evidence presented here that the tropical coupled ocean-atmosphere system sustains a low frequency inter-annual mode and a host of higher frequency intra-seasonal unstable modes. At long wavelengths, the low frequency mode is dominant while at short wavelengths, the high frequency modes are dominant resulting in the co-existence of a long wave low frequency mode with some short wave intra-seasonal modes in the tropical coupled system. It is argued that due to its long wavelength, the low frequency mode would behave like a linear oscillator while the higher frequency short wave modes would be nonlinear. The conceptual model envisages that an interaction between the low frequency linear oscillator and the high frequency nonlinear oscillations results in the observed aperiodicity of the tropical coupled system. This is illustrated by representing the higher frequency intra-seasonal oscillations by a nonlinear low order model which is then coupled to a linear oscillator with a periodicity of four years. The physical mechanism resulting in the aperiodicity in the low frequency oscillations and implications of these results on the predictability of the coupled system are discussed.

A state-of-the-art model of the coupled ocean-atmosphere system, the climate forecast system (CFS), from the National Centres for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), USA, has been ported onto the PARAM Padma parallel computing system at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), Bangalore and retrospective predictions for the summer monsoon (June-September) season of 2009 have been generated, using five initial conditions for the atmosphere and one initial condition for the ocean for May 2009. Whereas a large deficit in the Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR; June-September) was experienced over the Indian region (with the all-India rainfall deficit by 22% of the average), the ensemble average prediction was for above-average rainfall during the summer monsoon. The retrospective predictions of ISMR with CFS from NCEP for 1981-2008 have been analysed. The retrospective predictions from NCEP for the summer monsoon of 1994 and that from CDAC for 2009 have been compared with the simulations for each of the seasons with the stand-alone atmospheric component of the model, the global forecast system (GFS), and observations. It has been shown that the simulation with GFS for 2009 showed deficit rainfall as observed. The large error in the prediction for the monsoon of 2009 can be attributed to a positive Indian Ocean Dipole event seen in the prediction from July onwards, which was not present in the observations. This suggests that the error could be reduced with improvement of the ocean model over the equatorial Indian Ocean.

Enoyl acyl carrier protein reductase (ENR), which catalyzes the final and rate limiting step of fatty acid elongation, has been validated as a potential drug target. Triclosan is known to be an effective inhibitor for this enzyme. We mutated the substrate binding site residue Ala372 of the ENR of Plasmodium falciparum (PfENR) to Methionine and Valine which increased the affinity of the enzyme towards triclosan to almost double, close to that of Escherichia coli ENR (EcENR) which has a Methionine at the structurally similar position of Ala372 of PfENR. Kinetic studies of the mutants of PfENR and the crystal structure analysis of the A372M mutant revealed that a more hydrophobic environment enhances the affinity of the enzyme for the inhibitor. A triclosan derivative showed a threefold increase in the affinity towards the mutants compared to the wild type, due to additional interactions with the A372M mutant as revealed by the crystal structure. The enzyme has a conserved salt bridge which stabilizes the substrate binding loop and appears to be important for the active conformation of the enzyme. We generated a second set of mutants to check this hypothesis. These mutants showed loss of function, except in one case, where the crystal structure showed that the substrate binding loop is stabilized by a water bridge network. In this paper, we present a novel analytical formulation for the coupled partial differential equations governing electrostatically actuated constrained elastic structures of inhomogeneous material composition. We also present a computationally efficient numerical framework for solving the coupled equations over a reference domain with a fixed finite-element mesh. This serves two purposes: (i) a series of problems with varying geometries and piece-wise homogeneous and/or inhomogeneous material distribution can be solved with a single pre-processing step, (ii) topology optimization methods can be easily implemented by interpolating the material at each point in the reference domain from a void to a dielectric or a conductor. This is attained by considering the steady-state electrical current conduction equation with a `leaky capacitor' model instead of the usual electrostatic equation. This formulation is amenable for both static and transient problems in the elastic domain coupled with the quasi-electrostatic electric field. The procedure is numerically implemented on the COMSOL Multiphysics (R) platform using the weak variational form of the governing equations. Examples have been presented to show the accuracy and versatility of the scheme. The accuracy of the scheme is validated for the special case of piece-wise homogeneous material in the limit of the leaky-capacitor model approaching the ideal case.
