The two-pion contribution from low energies to the muon magnetic moment anomaly, although small, has a large relative uncertainty since in this region the experimental data on the cross sections are neither sufficient nor precise enough. It is therefore of interest to see whether the precision can be improved by means of additional theoretical information on the pion electromagnetic form factor, which controls the leading-order contribution. In the present paper, we address this problem by exploiting analyticity and unitarity of the form factor in a parametrization-free approach that uses the phase in the elastic region, known with high precision from the Fermi-Watson theorem and Roy equations for pi pi elastic scattering as input. The formalism also includes experimental measurements on the modulus in the region 0.65-0.70 GeV, taken from the most recent e(+)e(-) ->pi(+)pi(-) experiments, and recent measurements of the form factor on the spacelike axis. By combining the results obtained with inputs from CMD2, SND, BABAR, and KLOE, we make the predictions a(mu)(pi pi,LO)2m(pi), 0.30 GeV] = (0.553 +/- 0.004) x 10(-10) and a(mu)(pi pi,LO)0.30 GeV; 0.63 GeV] = (133.083 +/- 0.837) x 10(-10). These are consistent with the other recent determinations and have slightly smaller errors.

The Cubic Sieve Method for solving the Discrete Logarithm Problem in prime fields requires a nontrivial solution to the Cubic Sieve Congruence (CSC) x(3) equivalent to y(2)z (mod p), where p is a given prime number. A nontrivial solution must also satisfy x(3) not equal y(2)z and 1 <= x, y, z < p(alpha), where alpha is a given real number such that 1/3 < alpha <= 1/2. The CSC problem is to find an efficient algorithm to obtain a nontrivial solution to CSC. CSC can be parametrized as x equivalent to v(2)z (mod p) and y equivalent to v(3)z (mod p). In this paper, we give a deterministic polynomial-time (O(ln(3) p) bit-operations) algorithm to determine, for a given v, a nontrivial solution to CSC, if one exists. Previously it took (O) over tilde (p(alpha)) time in the worst case to determine this. We relate the CSC problem to the gap problem of fractional part sequences, where we need to determine the non-negative integers N satisfying the fractional part inequality {theta N} < phi (theta and phi are given real numbers). The correspondence between the CSC problem and the gap problem is that determining the parameter z in the former problem corresponds to determining N in the latter problem. We also show in the alpha = 1/2 case of CSC that for a certain class of primes the CSC problem can be solved deterministically in <(O)over tilde>(p(1/3)) time compared to the previous best of (O) over tilde (p(1/2)). It is empirically observed that about one out of three primes is covered by the above class. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The problem of time variant reliability analysis of randomly parametered and randomly driven nonlinear vibrating systems is considered. The study combines two Monte Carlo variance reduction strategies into a single framework to tackle the problem. The first of these strategies is based on the application of the Girsanov transformation to account for the randomness in dynamic excitations, and the second approach is fashioned after the subset simulation method to deal with randomness in system parameters. Illustrative examples include study of single/multi degree of freedom linear/non-linear inelastic randomly parametered building frame models driven by stationary/non-stationary, white/filtered white noise support acceleration. The estimated reliability measures are demonstrated to compare well with results from direct Monte Carlo simulations. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Gray water treatment and reuse is an immediate option to counter the upcoming water shortages in various parts of world, especially urban areas. Anaerobic treatment of gray water in houses is an alternative low cost, low energy and low sludge generating option that can meet this challenge. Typical problems of fluctuating VFA, low pH and sludge washout at low loading rates with gray water feedstock was overcome in two chambered anaerobic biofilm reactors using natural fibers as the biofilm support. The long term performance of using natural fiber based biofilms at moderate and low organic loading rates (OLR) have been examined. Biofilms raised on natural fibers (coir, ridge-gourd) were similar to that of synthetic media (PVC, polyethylene) at lower OLR when operated in pulse fed mode without effluent recirculation and achieved 80-90% COD removal at HRT of 2 d showing a small variability during start-up. Confocal microscopy of the biofilms on natural fibers indicated thinner biofilms, dense cell architecture and low extra cellular polymeric substances (EPS) compared to synthetic supports and this is believed to be key factor in high performance at low OLR and low strength gray water. Natural fibers are thus shown to be an effective biofilm support that withstand fluctuating characteristic of domestic gray water. (C) 2013 The Institution of Chemical Engineers. We report the crystal structure of the first prokaryotic aspartic proteinase-like domain identified in the genome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A search in the genomes of Mycobacterium species showed that the C-terminal domains of some of the PE family proteins contain two classic DT/SG motifs of aspartic proteinases with a low overall sequence similarity to HIV proteinase. The three-dimensional structure of one of them, Rv0977 (PE_PGRS16) of M. tuberculosis revealed the characteristic pepsinf-old and catalytic site architecture. However, the active site was completely blocked by the N-terminal His-tag. Surprisingly, the enzyme was found to be inactive even after the removal of the N-terminal His-tag. A comparison of the structure with pepsins showed significant differences in the critical substrate binding residues and in the flap tyrosine conformation that could contribute to the lack of proteolytic activity of Rv0977. A method to estimate the Hall-Petch coefficient k for yield strength and flow stress of steels through nanoindentation experiments is proposed. While determination of k(f) for flow stress is on the basis of grain boundary strengthening evaluated by sharp indentation, k(y) for yield strength was computed with pop-in data from spherical indentations. Good agreement between estimated and literature data, obtained from the tensile tests, validates the proposed methodology. (C) 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. A new general route for the synthesis of novel beta-aryl-beta-(methylthio)acroleins, a class of stable potential 1,3-dielectrophilic synthons, has been reported. The overall protocol involves treatment of either beta-chloroacroleins or their precursor iminium salts (generated in situ from the corresponding active methylene ketones under Vilsmeier-Haack reaction conditions) with S,S-dimethyldithiocarbonates (DDC)/aqueous KOH in either a one-pot or two-step process. The dimethyldithiocarbonate (DDC)/30% aqueous KOH has been shown to be an excellent source of methylthiolate anion. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new NMR experiment that exploits the advantages of proton double quantum (DQ) NMR through a proton DQ-carbon single quantum (SQ) correlation experiment in the solid state is proposed. Analogous to the previously proposed 2D H-1 (DQ)-C-13 refocused INEPT experiment (Webber et al., 2010), the correlation between H-1 and C-13 is achieved through scalar coupling evolution, while the double quantum coherence among protons is generated through dipolar couplings. However, the new experiment relies on C-13 transverse coherence for scalar transfer. The new experiment dubbed MAS-J-H-1 (DQ)-C-13-HMQC, is particularly suited for unlabeled molecules and can provide higher sensitivity than its INEPT counterpart. The experiment is applied to four different samples. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Impaired Akt1 signaling is observed in neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease (PD). In PD models oxidative modification of Akt1 leads to its dephosphorylation and consequent loss of its kinase activity. To explore the underlying mechanism we exposed Neuro2A cells to cadmium, a pan inhibitor of protein thiol disulfide oxidoreductases, including glutaredoxin 1 (Grx1), or downregulated Grx1, which led to dephosphorylation of Akt1, loss of its kinase activity, and also decreased Akt1 protein levels. Mutation of cysteines to serines at 296 and 310 in Akt1 did not affect its basal kinase activity but abolished cadmium- and Grx1 downregulation-induced reduction in Akt1 kinase activity, indicating their critical role in redox modulation of Akt1 function and turnover. Cadmium-induced decrease in phosphorylated Akt1 correlated with increased association of wild-type (WT) Akt1 with PP2A, which was absent in the C296-310S Akt1 mutant and was also abolished by N-acetylcysteine treatment. Further, increased proteasomal degradation of Akt1 by cadmium was not seen in the C296-310S Akt1 mutant, indicating that oxidation of cysteine residues facilitates degradation of WT Akt1. Moreover, preventing oxidative modification of Akt1 cysteines 296 and 310 by mutating them to serines increased the cell survival effects of Akt1. Thus, in neurodegenerative states such as PD, maintaining the thiol status of cysteines 296 and 310 in Akt1 would be critical for Akt1 kinase activity and for preventing its degradation by proteasomes. Preventing downregulation of Akt signaling not only has long-range consequences for cell survival but could also affect the multiple roles that Ala plays, including in the Akt-mTOR signaling cascade. Sign changes of Fourier coefficients of various modular forms have been studied. In this paper, we analyze some sign change properties of Fourier coefficients of Hilbert modular forms, under the assumption that all the coefficients are real. The quantitative results on the number of sign changes in short intervals are also discussed. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Dual photoluminescence (PL) emission characteristics of Mn2+ doped ZnS (ZnS:Mn) quantum dots (QDs) have drawn a lot of attention recently. However, here we report the effect of thermal annealing on the PL emission characteristics of uncapped ZnS:Mn QDs of average sizes similar to 2-3 nm, synthesized by simple chemical precipitation method by using de-ionized (DI) water at room temperature. As-synthesized samples show dual PL emissions, having one UV PL band centred at similar to 400 nm and the other in the visible region similar to 610 nm. But when the samples are isochronally annealed for 2 h at 100-600 degrees C temperature range in air, similar to 90% quenching of Mn2+ related visible PL emission intensity takes place at the annealing temperature of 600 degrees C. X-ray diffraction data show that the as-synthesized cubic ZnS has been converted to wurtzite ZnO at 600 degrees C annealing temperature. The nanostructural properties of the samples are also determined by transmission electron micrograph, electron probe micro-analyser and UV-vis spectrophotometry. The photocatalytic property of the annealed ZnS:Mn sample has been demonstrated and photo-degradation efficiency of the as-synthesized and 600 degrees C annealed ZnS:Mn sample has been found out to be similar to 35% and similar to 61%, respectively, for the degradation of methylene blue dye under visible light irradiation. The synthesized QDs may find significant applications in future optoelectronic devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This article presents our work on the sigma-Ferrier ring-expansion of carbohydrate derived vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs) under electrophilic conditions mediated by chloramine-T and a phase-transfer catalyst. The present work serves as the first example on the studies of the reactivity of carbohydrate VCPs towards the synthesis of densely functionalized oxepane analogues. The work elaborates on a reasonable mechanism for the product formation and our observations on the diastereoselectivity based on control experiments and gas-phase calculations. Edge cracked specimens have been widely utilized for fracture testing. Edge cracked semicircular disk (ECSD) specimen has now been well characterized with regard to its form factor and weight function. This paper presents a modified semicircular ring version of this specimen to enhance the form factor in general while retaining other desirable features. The efficacy of the modified design is proved by combining theory of elasticity solutions with finite element results to arrive at the optimum design geometry. New insights emerging from this work are used to theoretically re-examine the arch-tension and the four-point bend specimens. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper we present a massively parallel open source solver for Richards equation, named the RichardsFOAM solver. This solver has been developed in the framework of the open source generalist computational fluid dynamics tool box OpenFOAM (R) and is capable to deal with large scale problems in both space and time. The source code for RichardsFOAM may be downloaded from the CPC program library website. It exhibits good parallel performances (up to similar to 90% parallel efficiency with 1024 processors both in strong and weak scaling), and the conditions required for obtaining such performances are analysed and discussed. These performances enable the mechanistic modelling of water fluxes at the scale of experimental watersheds (up to few square kilometres of surface area), and on time scales of decades to a century. Such a solver can be useful in various applications, such as environmental engineering for long term transport of pollutants in soils, water engineering for assessing the impact of land settlement on water resources, or in the study of weathering processes on the watersheds.
