The contributions of full-wake dynamics in trim analysis are demonstrated for finding the control inputs and periodic responses simultaneously, as well as in Floquet eigenanalysis for finding the damping levels. The equations of flap bending, lag bending, and torsion are coupled with a three-dimensional, finite state wake, and low-frequency (<1/rev) to high frequency (>1/rev) multiblade modes are considered. Full blade-wake dynamics is used in trim analysis and Floquet eigenanalysis. A uniform cantilever blade in trimmed flight is investigated over a range of thrust levels, advance ratios, number of blades, and blade torsional frequencies. The investigation includes the convergence characteristics of control inputs, periodic responses, and damping levels with respect to the number of spatial azimuthal harmonics and radial shape functions in the wake representation. It also includes correlation with the measured lag damping of a three-bladed untrimmed rotor. The parametric study shows the dominant influence of wake dynamics on control inputs, periodic responses, and damping levels, and wake theory generally improves the correlation.

Atomic vibration in the Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) gives rise to non-local interactions. In this paper, an expression for the non-local scaling parameter is derived as a function of the geometric and electronic properties of the rolled graphene sheet in single-walled CNTs. A self-consistent method is developed for the linearization of the problem of ultrasonic wave propagation in CNTs. We show that (i) the general three-dimensional elastic problem leads to a single non-local scaling parameter (e(0)), (ii) e(0) is almost constant irrespective of chirality of CNT in the case of longitudinal wave propagation, (iii) e(0) is a linear function of diameter of CNT for the case of torsional mode of wave propagation, (iv) e(0) in the case of coupled longitudinal-torsional modes of wave propagation, is a function which exponentially converges to that of axial mode at large diameters and to torsional mode at smaller diameters. These results are valid in the long-wavelength limit. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We performed high resolution spectroscopy of the solar corona during the total solar eclipse of 22 July 2009 in two emission lines: the green line at 5303 due to Fe xiv and the red line at 6374 due to Fe x, simultaneously from Anji (latitude 30A degrees 28.1' N; longitude 119A degrees 35.4' E; elevation 890 m), China. A two-mirror coelostat with 100 cm focal length lens produced a 9.2 mm image of the Sun. The spectrograph using 140 cm focal length lens in Littrow mode and a grating with 600 lines per millimeter blazed at 2 mu m provided a dispersion of 30 m and 43 m per pixel in the fourth order around the green line and third order around the red line, respectively. Two Peltier cooled 1k x 1k CCD cameras, with a pixel size of 13 mu m square and 14-bit readout at 10 MHz operated in frame transfer mode, were used to obtain the time sequence spectra in two emission lines simultaneously. The duration of totality was 341 s, but we could get spectra for 270 s after a trial exposure at an interval of 5 s. We report here on the detection of intensity, velocity, and line width oscillations with periodicity in the range of 25 -50 s. These oscillations can be interpreted in terms of the presence of fast magnetoacoustic waves or torsional Alfv,n waves. The intensity ratios of green to red emission lines indicate the temperature of the corona to be 1.65 MK in the equatorial region and 1.40 MK in the polar region, relatively higher than the expected temperature during the low activity period. The width variation of the emission lines in different coronal structures suggests different physical conditions in different structures.

Chlorine-35 NQR frequency and spin-lattice relaxation time measurements as a function of temperature in the range 77-300 K were carried out on 2-amino-3,5-dichloropyridine. Two NQR signals were observed and were assigned to the two chlorines present in the molecule using the additive model for substituent effects. The temperature dependence of the NQR frequency was analysed in terms of the torsional oscillations of the molecule and the torsional frequencies and their temperature dependence were calculated numerically using a two-mode approximation. The temperature dependence of the NQR spin-lattice relaxation time was found to be mainly due to the torsional oscillations of the molecule, with anharmonicity effects showing up at higher temperatures. A microchip thermocycler, fabricated from silicon and Pyrex #7740 glass, is described. Usual resistive heating has been replaced by induction heating, leading to much simpler fabrication steps. Heating and cooling rates of 6.5 and 4.2 degreesC/s, respectively have been achieved, by optimising the heater dimensions and heating frequency (similar to200 kHz). Four devices are mounted on a heater, resulting in low power consumption (similar to 1.4 W per device on the average). Using simple on-off electronic temperature control, a temperature stability within -0.2 degreesC is achieved. Features such as induction heating, good temperature control, battery operation, and low power consumption make the device suitable for portable applications, particularly in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) systems. Thermal decomposition of 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) has been studied in the temperature range of 10501175 K behind reflected shock waves in a single pulse shock tube. The unimolecular elimination of HCl is found to be the major channel through which 1,2-DCE decomposes under these conditions. The rate constant for the unimolecular elimination of HCl from 1,2-dichloroethane is found to be 10(13.98+/-0.80) exp(-57.8+/-2.0/RT) s(-1), where the activation energy is given in kcal mol(-1) and is very close to that value for CH3CH2Cl (EC). Ab initio (HF and MP2) and DFT calculations have been carried out to find the activation barrier and the structure of the transition state for this reaction channel from both EC and 1,2-DCE. The preexponential factors calculated at various levels of theory (BF/6-311++G**, MP2/6-311++G**, and B3LYP/6-311++G**) are (approximate to10(15) s(-1)) significantly larger than the experimental results. If the torsional mode in the ground state is treated as free internal rotation the preexponential factors reduce significantly, giving excellent agreement with experimental values. The DFT results are in excellent (fortuitous?) agreement with the experimental value for activation energy for 1,2-DCE while the MP2 and HF results seem to overestimate the barrier. However, DFT results for EC is 4.5 kcal mol(-1) less than the previously reported experimental values. At all levels, theory predicts an increase in HCI elimination barrier on beta-Cl substitution on EC.

A set of finite elements (FEs) is formulated to analyze wave propagation through inhomogeneous material when subjected to mechanical, thermal loading or piezo-electric actuation. Elastic, thermal and electrical properties of the materials axe allowed to vary in length and thickness direction. The elements can act both as sensors and actuators. These elements are used to model wave propagation in functionally graded materials (FGM) and the effect of inhomogeneity in the wave is demonstrated. Further, a surface acoustic wave (SAW) device is modeled and wave propagation due to piezo-electric actuation from interdigital transducers (IDTs) is studied.

As with 1,2-diphenylethane (dpe), X-ray crystallographic methods measure the central bond in meso-3,4-diphenylhexane-2,5-done (dphd) as significantly shorter than normal for an sp(3)-sp(3) bond. The same methods measure the benzylic (ethane C-Ph) bonds in dphd as unusually long for sp(3)-sp(2) liaisons. Torsional motions of the phenyl rings about the C-Ph bonds have been proposed as the artifacts behind the result of a 'short' central bond in dpe. While a similar explanation can, presumably, hold for the even 'shorter' central bond in dphd, it cannot account for the 'long' C-Ph bonds. The phenyl groups, departing much from regular hexagonal shape, adopt highly skewed conformations with respect to the plane constituted by the four central atoms. It is thought that-the thermal motions of the phenyl rings, conditioned by the potential wells in which they are ensconced in the unit cell, are largely libratory around their normal axes. In what appears to be a straightforward explanation under the 'rigid-body' concept, it appears that these libratory motions of the phenyl rings, that account, at the same time, for the 'short' central bond, are the artifacts behind the 'long' measurement of the C-Ph bonds. These motions could be superimposed on torsional motions analogous to those proposed in the case of dpe. An inspection of the ORTEP diagram from the 298 K data on dphd clearly suggests these possibilities. Supportive evidence for these qualitative explanations from an analysis of the differences between the mean square displacements of C(1) and C(7)/C(1a) and C(7a) based on the 'rigid-body model' is discussed. Ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMC), piezoelectric polymer composites and nematic elastomer composites are materials, which exhibit characteristics of both sensors and actuators. Large deformation and curvature are observed in these systems when electric potential is applied. Effects of geometric non-linearity due to the chargeinduced motion in these materials are poorly understood. In this paper, a coupled model for understanding the behavior of an ionic polymer beam undergoing large deformation and large curvature is presented. Maxwell's equations and charge transport equations are considered which couple the distribution of the ion concentration and the pressure gradient along length of a cantilever beam with interdigital electrodes. A nonlinear constitutive model is derived accounting for the visco-elasto-plastic behavior of these polymers and based on the hypothesis that the presence of electrical charge stretches/contracts bonds, which give rise to electrical field dependent softening/hardening. Polymer chain orientation in statistical sense plays a role on such softening or hardening. Elementary beam kinematics with large curvature is considered. A model for understanding the deformation due to electrostatic repulsion between asymmetrical charge distributions across the cross-sections is presented. Experimental evidence that Silver(Ag) nanoparticle coated IPMCs can be used for energy harvesting is reported. An IPMC strip is vibrated in different environments and the electric power against a resistive load is measured. The electrical power generated was observed to vary with the environment with maximum power being generated when the strip is in wet state. IPMC based energy harvesting systems have potential applications in tidal wave energy harvesting, residual environmental energy harvesting to power MEMS and NEMS devices.

An analysis of the pressure variation over an aerofoil with integrated Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wire is reported. A computational model based on finite elements and potential flow computation is proposed to obtain the deflections of the upper and the lower skins of the aerofoil subjected to aerodynamic pressure and hysteretic deformation of the SMA wire. The computational model couples a one-dimensional phenomenological constitutive model of SMA wire with the laminar incompressible aerodynamic pressure induced deformation of the aerofoil skins. The SMA wires are actuated by thermoelectric control system with auxiliary compensator feeding the piezoelectric stack actuators to adjust the hysteretic dynamics of the SMA wire. At each step of this coupled deformation process, the deflected/morphed shape of the aerofoil is d while recalculating to get the pressure distribution. Panel method based on incompressible and inviscid flow is employed for this purpose. The aerodynamic lift is then obtained from the pressure distributions. Numerical results on the variation of coefficient of pressure are reported.

Internal vibration modes of bis-(alkylammonium) tetrachlorometallates(II) and the corresponding alkylammonium chlorides have been studied through their phase transitions using infrared spectroscopy. The studies show that the vibrational states of alkylammonium ions change markedly through the phase transitions. Spectra of the analogous tetrabromometallates and alkylammonium bromides also confirm this behaviour. There is appreciable motion of the alkylammonium ions in the high-temperature phases; thus, CH3NH+3 ions are essentially undistorted in these phases. The low-temperature, ordered phases show evidence of stronger hydrogen bonding of the cations and for the presence of C—N torsional modes.

Analytical expressions are found for the wavenumbers and resonance frequencies in flexible, orthotropic shells using the asymptotic methods. These expressions are valid for arbitrary circumferential orders n. The Donnell-Mushtari shell theory is used to model the dynamics of the cylindrical shell. Initially, an in vacuo cylindrical isotropic shell is considered and expressions for all the wavenumbers (bending, near-field bending, longitudinal and torsional) are found. Subsequently, defining a suitable orthotropy parameter epsilon, the problem of wave propagation in an orthotropic shell is posed as a perturbation on the corresponding problem for an isotropic shell. Asymptotic expressions for the wavenumbers in the in vacuo orthotropic shell are then obtained by treating epsilon as an expansion parameter. In both cases (isotropy and orthotropy), a frequency-scaling parameter (eta) and Poisson's ratio (nu) are used to find elegant expansions in the different frequency regimes. The asymptotic expansions are compared with numerical solutions in each of the cases and the match is found to be good. The main contribution of this work lies in the extension of the existing literature by developing closed-form expressions for wavenumbers with arbitrary circumferential orders n in the case of both, isotropic and orthotropic shells. Finally, we present natural frequency expressions in finite shells (isotropic and orthotropic) for the axisymmetric mode and compare them with numerical and ANSYS results. Here also, the comparison is found to be good. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Copper (II) oxide (CuO)/multiwall carbon nanotube (MWNT) thin film based ethanol-sensors were fabricated by dispersing CVD-prepared MWNTs in varying concentration over DC magnetron sputtered-CuO films. The responses of these sensors as a function of MWNT concentrations and temperatures were measured, and compared. The sensing response was the maximum at an operating temperature near 400 degrees C for all the samples irrespective of the MWNTs dispersed over them. At optimum operating temperature (T(opt)) of 407 +/- 1 degrees C, the response is linear for 100-700 ppm range and tends to saturate at higher concentrations. In comparison with bare CuO sample, the response of CuO/MWNT sensing films increased up to 50% in the linear range. The response improvement for 2500 ppm of ethanol was up to 90% compared to bare CuO sample. In addition, the sensing response time also reduced to around 23% for lowest ethanol concentration at T(opt). However, a decrease in the sensor response was observed on films with very high concentrations of MWNTs. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

To investigate the use of centre of gravity location on reducing cyclic pitch control for helicopter UAV's (unmanned air vehicles) and MAV's (micro air vehicles). Low cyclic pitch is a necessity to implement the swashplateless rotor concept using trailing edge flaps or active twist using current generation low authority piezoceramic actuators. Design/methodology/approach – An aeroelastic analysis of the helicopter rotor with elastic blades is used to perform parametric and sensitivity studies of the effects of longitudinal and lateral center of gravity (cg) movements on the main rotor cyclic pitch. An optimization approach is then used to find cg locations which reduce the cyclic pitch at a given forward speed. Findings – It is found that the longitudinal cyclic pitch and lateral cyclic pitch can be driven to zero at a given forward speed by shifting the cg forward and to the port side, respectively. There also exist pairs of numbers for the longitudinal and lateral cg locations which drive both the cyclic pitch components to zero at a given forward speed. Based on these results, a compromise optimal cg location is obtained such that the cyclic pitch is bounded within ±5° for a BO105 helicopter rotor. Originality/value – The reduction in the cyclic pitch due to helicopter cg location is found to significantly reduce the maximum magnitudes of the control angles in flight, facilitating the swashplateless rotor concept. In addition, the existence of cg locations which drive the cyclic pitches to zero allows for the use of active cg movement as a way to replace the cyclic pitch control for helicopter MAV's.

Fuzzy logic control (FLC) systems have been applied as an effective control system in various fields, including vibration control of structures. The advantage of this approach is its inherent robustness and ability to handle non‐linearities and uncertainties in structural behavior and loading. The study evaluates the three‐dimensional benchmark control problem for a seismically excited highway bridge using an ANFIS driven hydraulic actuators. An ANN based training strategy that considers both velocity and acceleration feedback together with a fuzzy logic rule base is developed. Present study needs only 4 accelerometers and 4 fuzzy rule bases to determine the control force, instead of 8 accelerometers and 4 displacement transducers used in the benchmark study problem. The results obtained are better than that obtained from the benchmark control algorithm.
