Nitrogen Derivatives Of C-60 And C-70 - Interaction Of Fullerenes With Nitrogen In Gas-Phase

Mass spectrometric studies show that contact-arc vaporization of graphite in a partial atmosphere of N2 or NH3 yields nitrogenous products tentatively assigned to species such as C70N2, C59N6, C59N4 and C59N2 involving addition of or substitution by nitrogen along with the species due to C2 and C4 losses. Mass spectrometry and other techniques have been employed to identify products of the nucleophilic addition of aliphatic amines to C60 and C70 in solution phase.

Solubilities of Benzene Derivatives in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

The solubilities of benzene derivatives in supercritical carbon dioxide was determined by the saturation method over the pressure range (9.5 to 14.5) MPa. The solubilities were determined at (308 and 313) K for 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene and (308, 318, and 328) K for m-dinitrobenzene. At 308K, the solubility (in mole fraction) of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene varied from (2.83 to 5.88).10(-3) while the solubility of m-dinitrobenzene increased from (2.05 to 5.54).10(-3) as the pressure increased from (9.5 to 14.5) MPa. However, the solubilities of both compounds decreased with increasing temperature. Models based on the solubility parameter and semiempirical models such as the Mendez-Santiago-Teja model, the Gordillo model, and the association model, were used to correlate the experimental solubility data for the benzene derivatives.

Non-linear optical response of rutile-related oxides, LiM(V)M(VI)O(6), and their derivatives obtained by ion-exchange and intercalation

Polycrystalline samples of oxides of the general formula LiM(V)M(VI)O(6) (M(V) = Nb, Ta; M(VI) = Mo, W), crystallizing in a non-centrosymmetric (space group P (4) over bar 2(1)m) trirutile structure, exhibit second harmonic generation (SHG) of 1064 nm radiation with efficiencies 15-45 times that of alpha-quartz; interestingly, the SHG response is retained by the protonated derivatives HM(V)M(VI)O(6) . xH(2)O, and their n-alkylamine intercalates as well.

Crystal growth and defects characterization of zinc tris (thiourea) sulfate: a novel metalorganic nonlinear optical crystal

Single crystals of the metalorganic nonlinear optical material zinc tris (thiourea) sulfate (ZTS) were grown from aqueous solution. The morphology of the crystals was indexed. The grown crystals were characterized by recording the powder X-ray diffraction pattern and by identifying the diffracting planes. Spectrophotometric studies on ZTS reveal that it has good transparency for the Nd: YAG laser fundamental wavelength. Differential thermal analysis of ZTS indicates that the material does not sublime before melting but decomposes immediately after melting. The defect content of the crystals was estimated using etching and X-ray topography. The mechanical hardness anisotropy was evaluated in the (100) plane, which indicates the presence of soft directions.

Phosphate derivatives of 123 cuprates of the formula LnSr(2)Cu(3)O(7) (Ln=Gd, Dy, Ho)

Partial substitution of Cu in the chain by the phosphate ion stabilizes LnSr(2)Cu(3)O(7) (Ln = Gd, Dy or Ho) in the 123 structure. The LnSr(2)Cu(2.8)(PO4)(0.2)O-y derivatives exhibit incommensurately modulated structures. The holmium oxy-phosphate derivative has been rendered superconducting by the partial substitution of Ho by Ca.

Reduction of quinolines to 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro derivatives employing a combination of NaCNBH3 and BF3.OEt(2)

A regiospecific reduction of quinolines (and 1,10-phenanthroline) into the corresponding 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro derivatives using a combination of sodium cyanoborohydride and boron trifluoride etherate in refluxing methanol is described. Under the same conditions indole and acridine reduced to the corresponding dihydroderivatives, whereas acyl group transfer from oxygen to nitrogen atom is also noticed in the case of 8-acyloxyquinolines.

Structures, Stabilities and Strain in C60 and C70 Derivatives Fullerenes, Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures

The stabilities of a number of small adducts as well as larger hydrides of C-60 and C-70 are reported using semiempirical MO methods. The data are shown to be consistent with the nature of bond alternation in the parent fullerenes and strain effects in the cage systems.

Thermal expansion studies of substituted CTP derivatives

Several new Na, Y and Zr substituted derivatives of Ca-0.5 Ti-2(PO4)(3) (CTP) have been synthesized. These derivatives retain the hexagonal structure of the parent (CTP) compound with minor changes in lattice parameters. Linear thermal expansion coefficients (alpha) have been obtained using a high sensitivity dilatometer.

DNA binding properties of some cationic acridine derivatives

Four cationic acridine derivatives have been synthesized. The positively charged amine residue in one of these is connected directly on to the acridine nucleus and in three other acridines, the amines are connected via a 9-CH2 unit to acridine. We have investigated the binding of these acridines with mammalian DNA by absorption titration, UV- and induced-CD spectroscopy and competitive ethidium bromide displacement fluorescence assay. The effects on the DNA duplex denaturation melting temperatures upon binding of each one of these are also examined. The results obtained herein clearly show that the introduction of a -CH2 group in the im mediate vicinity of the interrelation moiety introduces alterations in the DNA binding characteristics of the resulting acridines.

Pyridinidm Hexafluorotitanate and its Derivatives

Pyridinium hexafluorotitanate, (C5H5NH)(2)TiF6, has been prepared by the reaction of titanium metal with pyridinium poly(hydrogen fluoride), PPHF, at room temperature. Making use of (C5H5NH)(2)TiF6 as a precursor, ammonium and alkali metal hexafluorotitanates, M(2)TiF(6) (M = NH4, Na, K, Rb and Cs) have been synthesized by metathesis. These hexafluorotitanates have been characterized by chemical analyses, infrared and NMR (H-1 and F-19) spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction methods. Indexed powder X-ray diffraction data for Rb2TiF6 and Cs2TiF6 have been reported.

Model studies directed towards the synthesis of functionalised chiral A-ring derivatives of taxanes

Model studies, starting from the monoterpene R-carvone, directed towards the synthesis of chiral A-ring derivatives of taxanes with oxygen functionalities at C-2, 9 and 13 carbon atoms as in taxol is described.

New La2CuO4 derivatives La(2-2x)Sr(2x)Cu(1-x)M(x)O(4) (M=Ti, Mn, Fe, or Ru): A study of linear Cu-O-M electronic interaction in two dimensions

Oxides of the general formula La2-2xSr2xCu1-xII,M(x)(IV)O(4) (M = Ti, Mn, Fe, or Ru), crystallizing in the tetragonal K,NIF, structure, have been synthesized. For M=Ti, only the x=0,5 member could be prepared, while for M=Mn and Fe, the composition range is 0 Cu(III)-O-Fe(III) valence degeneracy. Increasing the strontium content at the expense of lanthanum in La2-2xSr2xCu1-xFexO4 for x less than or equal to 0.20 renders the samples metallic but not superconducting. (C) 1997 Academic Press.

Synthesis and biological evaluation of novel 2-aralkyl-5-substituted-6-(4 `-fluorophenyl)-imidazo2,1-b]1,3,4]thiadiazole derivatives as potent anticancer agents

Levamisole, the imidazo2,1-b]thiazole derivative has been reported as a potential antitumor agent. In the present study, we synthesized, characterized and evaluated biological activity of its novel analogues with substitution in the aralkyl group and on imidazothiadiazole molecules with same chemical backbone but different side chains namely 2-aralkyl-6-(4'-fluorophenyl)-imidazo2,1-b]1,3,4]thiadiazoles (SCR1), 2-aralkyl-5-bromo-6-(4'-fluorophenyl)-imidazo2,1-b]1,3,4]-thiadiaz oles (SCR2), 2-aralkyl-5-formyl-6-(4'-fluorophenyl)-imidazo2,1-b]1,3,4]-thiadia zoles (SCR3) and 2-aralkyl-5-thiocyanato-6-(4'-fluorophenyl)-imidazo2,1-b]1,3,4]-th iadiazoles (SCR4) on leukemia cells. The cytotoxic studies showed that 3a, 4a, and 4c exhibited strong cytotoxicity while others had moderate cytotoxicity. Among these we chose 4a (IC50, 8 mu M) for understanding its mechanism of cytotoxicity. FACS analysis in conjunction with mitochondrial membrane potential and DNA fragmentation studies indicated that 4a induced apoptosis without cell cycle arrest suggesting that it could be used as a potential chemotherapeutic agent. Photophysics of PPV derivatives with varying conjugation lengths

Photoluminescence (PL), electroluminescence (EL) and photoconductivity (PC) of poly[(2,5-dimethoxy-p-phenylene) vinylene] (DMPPV) of varying conjugation length were studied. Thin film devices of the DMPPV with different conjugation lengths, as the active medium, were prepared. The PL emission spectra revealed the radiative decay of the singlet excitons with peak values corresponding to energies below the absorption onset. The PL. emission spectra of the copolymer films also revealed vibronic features, which get well resolved upon cooling to 80K, The devices exhibit light emitting diode (LED) behavior; the I-V curves and EL spectra are compared in these DMPPV samples having different conjugation lengths. The PC studies reveal subtle features, which can be attributed to the optically generated excitations in the system.

A new class of three dimensional D-pi-A trigonal cryptand derivatives for second-order nonlinear optics

Synthesis, crystal structures, linear and nonlinear optical properties of tris D-pi-A cryptand derivatives with C-3 symmetry are reported. Three fold symmetry inherent in the cryptand molecules has been utilized for designing these molecules. Molecular nonlinearities have been measured by hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) experiments. Among the compounds studied, L-1 adopts non-centrosymmetric crystal structure. Compounds L-1, L-2, L-3 and L-4 show a measurable SHG powder signal. These molecules are more isotropic and have significantly higher melting points than the classical p-nitroaniline based dipolar NLO compounds, making them useful for further device applications. Besides, different acceptor groups can be attached to the cryptand molecules to modulate their NLO properties.
