A novel geodesic constant method has been developed for the hitherto unsolved problem of surface-ray tracing over a class of surface, namely the general hyperboloid of revolution (GHOR). All the ray-geometric parameters are obtained analytically in a one-parameter form. The ray parameters derived here for the first time can be readily used in the UTD formulation for computing the mutual coupling between the antennas located on the GHOR.

Wettability gradient surfaces play a significant role in control and manipulation of liquid drops. The present work deals with the analysis of water drops impacting onto the junction line between hydrophobic texture and hydrophilic smooth portions of a dual-textured substrate made using stainless steel material. The hydrophobic textured portion of the substrate comprised of unidirectional parallel groove-like and pillar-like structures of uniform dimensions. A high-speed video camera recorded the spreading and receding dynamics of impacting drops. The drop impact dynamics during the early inertia driven impact regime remains unaffected by the dual-texture feature of the substrate. A larger retraction speed of drop liquid observed on the hydrophobic portion of the substrate during the impact of low velocity drops makes the drop liquid on the higher wettability portion to advance further (secondary drop spreading). The net horizontal drop velocity towards the hydrophilic portion of the dual-textured substrate decreases with increasing drop impact velocity. The available experimental results suggest that the movement of bulk drop liquid away from the impact point during drop impact on the dual-textured substrate is larger for the impact of low inertia drops. The radial current density distribution on the cathode longitudinal surface of magnetoplasmadynamic arcjets for axisymmetric geometries has been obtained by simultaneous solution of the electromagnetic equations for a given uniform gas dynamic field. The problem formulation permits a parametric study of the effects of the Hall parameter and the magnetic Reynolds number. The solution for the current density distribution displays current concentrations at two locations, that is, at the upstream and downstream ends of the cathode. This result is in conformity with known experimental data. The parameters responsible for these current concentrations are identified. It is shown that the effect of the magnetic Reynolds number on the current density distribution is different depending on whether or not the Hall effect is included. This result is also found to be consistent with experimental data.

The zeta potential of high-purity hematite at pH 6 and in a 10−3N NaCl solution has been determined at different concentrations of acetone using the streaming potential technique and the results correlated with the microhardness of the mineral. The zeta potential has been found to decrease as the hardness increases reaching a minimum at 10 cc per litre concentration of acetone when the hardness reaches a maximum. The results have been explained on the basis of competitive adsorption of chloride ions and acetone molecules at low concentrations of acetone and coadsorption of both species above 10 cc per litre concentration. Acetone in distilled water and 10−3N NaCl in distilled water decrease the microhardness of hematite individually between pH 5 to 7 and in combination increase the microhardness reaching a maximum at pH 6.

The oxygen transfer rate and the corresponding power requirement to operate the rotor are vital for design and scale-up of surface aerators. The aeration process can be analyzed in two ways such as batch and continuous systems. The process behaviors of batch and continuous flow systems are different from each other. The experimental and numerical results obtained through the batch systems cannot be relied on and applied for the designing of the continuous aeration tank. Based on the experimentation on batch and continuous type systems, the present work compares the performance of both the batch and continuous surface aeration systems in terms of their oxygen transfer capacity and power consumption. A simulation equation developed through experimentation has shown that continuous flow surface aeration systems are taking more energy than the batch systems. It has been found that batch systems are economical and better for the field application but not feasible where large quantity of wastewater is produced.

The nonsimilar non-Darcy mixed convection flow about a heated horizontal surface in a saturated porous medium has been studied when the surface temperature is a power function of distance (Tw = T∞ ± Axλ). The analysis is performed for the cases of parallel and stagnation flows with favourable induced pressure gradient. The partial differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically using the Keller box method. The heat transfer is enhanced due to the buoyancy parameter and wall temperature, but the non-Darcy parameter reduces it. For non-Darcy flow, the similarity solution exists only for the case of parallel flow.

Friction plays an important role in metal forming processes, and the surface texture of the die is a major factor that influences friction. In the present investigation, experiments were conducted to understand the role of surface texture of the harder die surface and load on coefficient of friction. The data analysis showed that the coefficient of friction is highly dependent on the surface texture of the die surface. Assigning different magnitude of coefficients of friction, obtained in the experiments, at different regions between the die and the workpiece, Finite element (FE) simulation of a compression test was carried out to understand the effect of friction on deformation and stress/strain-rate distribution. Simulation results revealed that, owing to the difference in coefficient of friction, there is a change in metal flow pattern. Both experimental and simulation results confirmed that the surface texture of the die surface and thus coefficient of friction directly affects the strain rate and flow pattern of the workpiece.

A hard roller under normal load is driven by the flat surface of a soft disc. Corrugations are generated on the disc when certain surface morphological, load, speed and mechanical property-oriented conditions are met. The evolutionary process of corrugation generation and the preconditions necessary for it are investigated morphologically and mechanically for four disc materials: mild steel, brass, PTFE and PMMA.

Normal mode sound propagation in an isovelocity ocean with random narrow-band surface waves is considered, assuming the root-mean-square wave height to be small compared to the acoustic wavelength. Nonresonant interaction among the normal modes is studied straightforward perturbation technique. The more interesting case of resonant interaction is investigated using the method of multiple scales to obtain a pair of stochastic coupled amplitude equations which are solved using the Peano-Baker expansion technique. Equations for the spatial evolution of the first and second moments of the mode amplitudes are also derived and solved. It is shown that, irrespective of the initial conditions, the mean values of the mode amplitudes tend to zero asymptotically with increasing range, the mean-square amplitudes tend towards a state of equipartition of energy, and the total energy of the modes is conserved.

In this paper, an effort is made to study accurately the field distribution for various types of ceramic insulators used for high-voltage transmission. The surface charge simulation method (SCSM) is employed for the field computation. With the help of SCSM program, a Novel field reduction electrode is designed and developed to reduce the maximum field around the pin region. In order to experimentally analyze the performance of discs with field reduction electrode, special artificial pollution test facility was built and utilized. The experimental results show better surface flashover performance of ceramic insulators used in high-voltage transmission and distribution systems.

Cutting of Y2O3-doped TZP rods by a low-speed diamond saw introduces an unidentified, metastable phase X (x-ZrO2) coexisting with the tetragonal (t-ZrO2) and the monoclinic (m-ZrO2) phases initially present in the sample. Further mechanical deformation of the cut surface by indentation or polishing sustains the x-ZrO2. Chemical etching removes the x-ZrO2 and increases the m-ZrO2content.

In the present investigation, experiments were conducted by unidirectional sliding of pins made of FCC metals (Pb, Al, and Cu) with significantly different hardness values against the steel plates of various surface textures and roughness using an inclined pin-on-plate sliding apparatus in ambient conditions under both the dry and lubricated conditions. For a given material pair, it was observed that transfer layer formation and the coefficient of friction along with its two components, namely adhesion and plowing, are controlled by the surface texture of the harder mating surfaces and are less dependent of surface roughness (R (a)) of the harder mating surfaces. The effect of surface texture on the friction was attributed to the variation of the plowing component of friction for different surfaces. It was also observed that the variation of plowing friction as a function of hardness depends on surface textures. More specifically, the plowing friction varies with hardness of the soft materials for a given type of surface texture and it is independent of hardness of soft materials for other type of surface texture. These variations could be attributed to the extent of plane strain conditions taking place at the asperity level during sliding. It was also observed that among the surface roughness parameters, the mean slope of the profile, Delta (a), correlated best with the friction. Furthermore, dimensionless quantifiable roughness parameters were formulated to describe the degree of plowing taking place at the asperity level.
