Experiments have shown strong effects of some substrates on the localized plasmons of metallic nano particles but they are inconclusive on the affecting parameters. Here, we have used discrete dipole approximation in conjunction with Sommerfeld integral relations to explain the effect of the substrates as a function of the parameters of incident radiation. The radiative coupling can both quench and enhance the resonance and its dependence on the angle and polarization of incident radiation with respect to the surface is shown. Non-radiative interaction with the substrate enhances the plasmon resonance of the particles and can shift the resonances from their free-space energies significantly. The non-radiative interaction of the substrate is sensitive to the shape of particles and polarization of incident radiation with respect to substrate. Our results show that the plasmon resonances in coupled and single particles can be significantly altered from their free-space resonances and are quenched or enhanced by the choice of substrate and polarization of incident radiation. In this paper, a multilevel flying capacitor inverter topology suitable for generating multilevel dodecagonal space vectors for an induction motor drive, is proposed. Because of the dodecagonal space vectors, it has increased modulation range with the absence of all 6n +/- 1, (n=odd) harmonics in the phase voltage and currents. The topology, realized by flying capacitor three level inverters feeding an open-end winding induction motor, does not suffer the neutral point voltage imbalance issues seen in NPC inverters and the capacitors have inherent charge-balancing capability with PWM control using switching state redundancies. Furthermore, the proposed technique uses lesser number of power supplies compared to cascaded H-bridge or NPC based dodecagonal schemes and has better ride-through capability. Finally, the voltage control is obtained through a simple carrier-based space vector PWM scheme implemented on a DSP.

Mn2+ doped (0-50.0 molar %) ZnS d-dots have been synthesized in water medium by using an environment friendly low cost chemical technique. Tunable dual emission in UV and yellow-orange regions is achieved by tailoring the Mn2+ doping concentration in the host ZnS nanocrystal. The optimum doping concentration for achieving efficient photoluminescence (PL) emission is determined to be similar to 1.10 (at. %) corresponding to 40.0 (molar %) of Mn2+ doping concentration used during synthesis. The mechanism of charge transfer from the host to the dopant leading to the intensity modulated tunable (594-610 nm) yellow-orange PL emission is straightforwardly understood as no capping agent is used. The temperature dependent PL emission measurements are carried out, viz., in 1.10 at. % Mn2+ doped sample and the experimental results are explained by using a theoretical PL emission model. It is found that the ratio of non-radiative to radiative recombination rates is temperature dependent and this phenomenon has not been reported, so far, in Mn2+ doped ZnS system. The colour tuning of the emitted light from the samples are evident from the calculated chromaticity coordinates. UV light irradiation for 150 min in 40.0 (molar %) Mn2+ doped sample shows an enhancement of 33% in PL emission intensity. (C) 2013 American Institute of Physics. http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4795779]

The layered double hydroxides (LDH) or anionic clays are an important class of ion-exchange materials. They consist of positively charged brucite-like inorganic sheets with charge-compensating exchangeable anions in the interlamellar space. Here we show how neutral TCNQ (7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) molecules can be included within the galleries of an LDH. To do so, we exploit the fact that TCNQ is a good electron acceptor that forms donor acceptor complexes with a variety of donors. The electron donor aniline was intercalated into a Mg-Al LDH as p-aminobenzoate (AB) ions by a conventional ion-exchange reaction. We show here that neutral TCNQ molecules may be driven into the galleries of the layered solid by charge-transfer complex formation with the intercalated p-aminobenzoate anions. We use diffraction and spectroscopic measurements in combination with molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemical calculations to establish the nature of interactions and arrangement of the charge-transfer complex within the galleries of the layered double hydroxide. Electrostatic interactions between the TCNQ molecules and the anchored AB ions, subsequent to charge transfer, are the driving force for the inclusion of TCNQ molecules in the galleries of the LDH.

In this paper, we analyze the combined effects of size quantization and device temperature variations (T = 50K to 400 K) on the intrinsic carrier concentration (n(i)), electron concentration (n) and thereby on the threshold voltage (V-th) for thin silicon film (t(si) = 1 nm to 10 nm) based fully-depleted Double-Gate Silicon-on-Insulator MOSFETs. The threshold voltage (V-th) is defined as the gate voltage (V-g) at which the potential at the center of the channel (Phi(c)) begins to saturate (Phi(c) = Phi(c(sat))). It is shown that in the strong quantum confinement regime (t(si) <= 3nm), the effects of size quantization far over-ride the effects of temperature variations on the total change in band-gap (Delta E-g(eff)), intrinsic carrier concentration (n(i)), electron concentration (n), Phi(c(sat)) and the threshold voltage (V-th). On the other hand, for t(si) >= 4 nm, it is shown that size quantization effects recede with increasing t(si), while the effects of temperature variations become increasingly significant. Through detailed analysis, a physical model for the threshold voltage is presented both for the undoped and doped cases valid over a wide-range of device temperatures, silicon film thicknesses and substrate doping densities. Both in the undoped and doped cases, it is shown that the threshold voltage strongly depends on the channel charge density and that it is independent of incomplete ionization effects, at lower device temperatures. The results are compared with the published work available in literature, and it is shown that the present approach incorporates quantization and temperature effects over the entire temperature range. We also present an analytical model for V-th as a function of device temperature (T). (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Lipoplex-type nanoaggregates prepared from pEGFP-C3 plasmid DNA (pDNA) and mixed liposomes, with a gemini cationic lipid (CL) 1,2-bis(hexadecyl imidazolium) alkanes], referred as (C(16)Im)(2)C-n (where C-n is the alkane spacer length, n = 2, 3, 5, or 12, between the imidazolium heads) and DOPE zwitterionic lipid, have been analyzed by zeta potential, gel electrophoresis, SAXS, cryo-TEM, fluorescence anisotropy, transfection efficiency, fluorescence confocal microscopy, and cell viability/cytotoxicity experiments to establish a structure-biological activity relationship. The study, carried out at several mixed liposome compositions, alpha, and effective charge ratios, rho(eff), of the lipoplex, demonstrates that the transfection of pDNA using CLs initially requires the determination of the effective charge of both. The electrochemical study confirms that CLs with a delocalizable positive charge in their headgroups yield an effective positive charge that is 90% of their expected nominal one, while pDNA is compacted yielding an effective negative charge which is only 10-25% than that of the linear DNA. SAXS diffractograms show that lipoplexes formed by CLs with shorter spacer (n = 2, 3, or 5) present three lamellar structures, two of them in coexistence, while those formed by CL with longest spacer (n = 12) present two additional inverted hexagonal structures. Cryo-TEM micrographs show nanoaggregates with two multilamellar structures, a cluster-type (at low alpha value) and a fingerprint-type, that coexist with the cluster-type at moderate alpha composition. The optimized transfection efficiency (TE) of pDNA, in HEK293T, HeLa, and H1299 cells was higher using lipoplexes containing gemini CLs with shorter spacers at low a value. Each lipid formulation did not show any significant levels of toxicity, the reported lipoplexes being adequate DNA vectors for gene therapy and considerably better than both Lipofectamine 2000 and CLs of the 1,2-bis(hexadecyl ammnoniun) alkane series, recently reported.

In this brief, the substrate noise effects of a pulsed clocking scheme on the output spur level, the phase noise, and the peak-to-peak (Pk-Pk) deterministic period jitter of an integer-N charge-pump phase-locked loop (PLL) are demonstrated experimentally. The phenomenon of noise coupling to the PLL is also explained through experiments. The PLL output frequency is 500 MHz and it is implemented in the 0.13-mu m CMOS technology. Measurements show a reduction of 12.53 dB in the PLL output spur level at an offset of 5 MHz and a reduction of 107 ps in the Pk-Pk deterministic period jitter upon reducing the duty cycle of the signal injected into the substrate from 50% to 20%. The results of the analyses suggest that using a pulsed clocking scheme for digital systems in mixed-signal integration along with other isolation techniques helps reduce the substrate noise effects on sensitive analog/radio-frequency circuits.

Nearly monodisperse spherical magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles are prepared by colloidal chemistry route. Magnetic and electronic transport properties of the annealed pellets of these nanoparticles are reported. Effect of external magnetic and electric fields on the magnetic and transport properties of the material are studied as a function of temperature. We find that the highest resistance state of the ferromagnetic system occurs at a magnetic field which is approximately equal to its magnetic coercivity; this establishes the magnetoresistance (MR) in this system to be of the conventional tunnelling type MR as against the spin-valve type MR found more recently in some ferromagnetic oxide systems. The material also shows electroresistance (ER) property with its low-temperature resistance being strongly dependent on the excitation current that is used for the measurement. This ER effect is concluded to be intrinsic to the material and is attributed to the electric field-induced melting of the charge-order state in magnetite.

Long range, continuous flow of liquid metals occurs upon application of an electric current. Here, we report experimental results elucidating the mechanism of current-induced liquid metal flow, and its dependence on substrate surface condition. It is shown that the observed flow is diffusion-controlled, with the flow-rate depending linearly on applied current density, indicating that it is driven by electromigration. The effective charge number for liquid electromigration, Z*, of several pure metals, such as Al, Bi, Ga, Sn, and Pb, were deduced from the experimental results and were found to be close to the elemental valency. With the exception of liquid Pb, Z* for all liquid metals tested in this study were positive, indicating that: (i) electron wind contributes much less to Z* in liquid metals than in solids, and (ii) with a few exceptions, liquid metals generally flow in the direction of the electric current. On smooth substrates which are wetted well by the liquid metal, flow occurs in a thin, continuous stream. On rough surfaces which are poorly wetted, on the other hand, discrete beads of liquid form, with mass transport between adjacent beads occurring by surface diffusion on the substrate. A rationale for the role of substrate roughness in fostering this observed transition in flow mechanism is presented. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

We revisit the constraints on the parameter space of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), from charge and color breaking minima in the light of information on the Higgs from the LHC so far. We study the behavior of the scalar potential keeping two light sfermion fields along with the Higgs in the pMSSM framework and analyze the stability of the vacuum. We find that for lightest stops a parts per thousand(2) 1 TeV and small mu a parts per thousand(2) 500 GeV, the absolute stability of the potential can be attained only for . The bounds become stronger for larger values of the mu parameter. Note that this is approximately the value of Xt which maximizes the Higgs mass. Our bounds on the low scale MSSM parameters are more stringent than those reported earlier in literature. We reanalyze the stau sector as well, keeping both staus. We study the connections between the observed Higgs rates and vacuum (meta)stability. We show how a precision study of the ratio of signal strengths, (mu (gamma gamma) /mu (ZZ) ) can shed further light.

Subtle manipulation of mutual repulsion and polarisation effects between polar and polarisable chromophores forced in closed proximity allows achieving major (100%) enhancement of the first hyperpolarisability together with increased transparency, breaking the well-known nonlinearity-transparency trade-off paradigm.

The electronic structure and spectral properties of hexagonal NiS have been studied in the high temperature paramagnetic phase and low temperature anti-ferromagnetic phase. The calculations have been performed using charge self-consistent density-functional theory in local density approximation combined with dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). The photoemission spectra (PES) and optical properties have been computed and compared with the experimental data. Our results show that the dynamical correlation effects are important to understand the spectral and optical properties of NiS. These effects have been analyzed in detail by means of the computed real and imaginary part of the self-energy.

In this article, we have presented ultrafast charge transfer dynamics through halogen bonds following vertical ionization of representative halogen bonded clusters. Subsequent hole directed reactivity of the radical cations of halogen bonded clusters is also discussed. Furthermore, we have examined effect of the halogen bond strength on the electron-electron correlation-and relaxation-driven charge migration in halogen bonded complexes. For this study, we have selected A-Cl (A represents F, OH, CN, NH2, CF3, and COOH substituents) molecules paired with NH3 (referred as ACl:NH3 complex): these complexes exhibit halogen bonds. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on purely electron correlation-and relaxation-driven ultrafast (attosecond) charge migration dynamics through halogen bonds. Both density functional theory and complete active space self-consistent field theory with 6-31+G(d, p) basis set are employed for this work. Upon vertical ionization of NCCl center dot center dot center dot NH3 complex, the hole is predicted to migrate from the NH3-end to the ClCN-end of the NCCl center dot center dot center dot NH3 complex in approximately 0.5 fs on the D-0 cationic surface. This hole migration leads to structural rearrangement of the halogen bonded complex, yielding hydrogen bonding interaction stronger than the halogen bonding interaction on the same cationic surface. Other halogen bonded complexes, such as H2NCl:NH3, F3CCl:NH3, and HOOCCl:NH3, exhibit similar charge migration following vertical ionization. On the contrary, FCl:NH3 and HOCl:NH3 complexes do not exhibit any charge migration following vertical ionization to the D-0 cation state, pointing to interesting halogen bond strength-dependent charge migration. A real-space high order finite difference method is used to analyze the effect of spherical domain size on the Hartree-Fock (and density functional theory) virtual eigenstates. We show the domain size dependence of both positive and negative virtual eigenvalues of the Hartree-Fock equations for small molecules. We demonstrate that positive states behave like a particle in spherical well and show how they approach zero. For the negative eigenstates, we show that large domains are needed to get the correct eigenvalues. We compare our results to those of Gaussian basis sets and draw some conclusions for real-space, basis-sets, and plane-waves calculations. (C) 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.
