Dissolution of barium ion from aqueous suspensions of commercial nano-sized barium titanate powders (BaTiO3) has been studied at various pH values, solids loading, different time intervals and different electrolyte concentrations. Zeta potential measurements at various pH values and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study were also carried out to know the surface behaviour. Dissolution of Ba2+ depends on the suspension pH and stirring time period. The iso-electric points were found at 3.4 and 12.2 for as-received BaTiO3 powder and 2.3 for the leached BaTiO3. The Ba2+-leached BaTiO3 suspension retards further leaching of Ba2+ ions at different pH values, which favours the achievement of stable suspension.

By employing EXAFS and magnetic measurements, it is shown that nanoparticles of nickel along with those of NiO are incorporated between the layers of a-zirconium phosphate (ZrP) by the thermal decomposition of nickel acetate intercalated in ZrP. The nickel nanoparticles are superparamagnetic. Hydrogen reduction produces small ferromagnetic nickel particles, most of which appear to be outside the interlayer space of ZrP.

Nanometre-sized powders of SrTiO3 were prepared at 70-100 degrees C by the wet-chemical method of gel to crystallite (G-C) conversion. The crystallite sizes obtained were in the range 5-13 nm, as estimated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies. The photocatalytic activities of these powders in the mineralization of phenol were evaluated in comparison with Degussa P25 (TiO2). The maximum photocatalytic activity was observed for powders annealed in the range 1100-1300 degrees C. The optical spectra of the particle suspensions in water showed broadened absorption around the band gap region, together with the appearance of an absorption maximum in the UV region. The effect of inorganic oxidizing species as electron scavengers on the rate of the photocatalytic degradation of phenol was studied. The influence of bulk and surface defects, which participate in the charge transfer process during photocatalysis, was investigated systematically.

The paper correlates the reactivity of rice husk ash with its physicochemical properties such as crystallinity, surface area, microstructure, particle size distribution, porosity and solubility. These properties, in tum, are dependent on the time-temperature conditions under which the ash is prepared. It is found that the reactivity of the ash cannot be quantified by any one of these parameters alone, though they all indicate it qualitatively. Therefore, a method for quantifying this property was developed, by which the Reactivity Index is obtained. There is only a gradual change in the reactivity index of RHA with ashing temperature, as in many other properties, like surface area, porosity and total volume of gas absorbed by unit mass of the silica ash. This reactive index is found to be useful in determining the optimum ash/lime ratios required to give the best performance for RHA-lime composites.

Coarse BO2·xH2O (2 < x < 80) gels, free of anion contaminants react with A(OH)2 under refluxing conditions at 70100°C giving rise to crystallites of single phased, nanometer size powders of ABO3 perovskites (A = Ba, Sr, Ca, Mg, Pb; B = Zr, Ti, Sn). Solid solutions of perovskites could be prepared from compositionally modified gels or mixtures of A(OH)2. Donor doped perovskites could also be prepared from the same method so that the products after processing are often semiconducting. Faster interfacial diffusion of A2+ ions into the gel generates the crystalline regions whose composition is controllable by the A/B ratio as well as the A(OH)2 concentration.

We show that the substrate affects the interparticle spacing in monolayer arrays with hexagonal order formed by self-assembly of polymer grafted nanoparticles. Remarkably, arrays with square packing were formed due to convective shearing at a liquid surface induced by miscibility of colloidal solution with the substrate.

The synthesis of ``smart structured'' conducting polymers and the fabrication of devices using them are important areas of research. However, conducting polymeric materials that are used in devices are susceptible to degradation due to oxygen and moisture. Thus, protection of such devices to ensure long-term stability is always desirable. Polymer nanocomposites are promising materials for the encapsulation of such devices. Therefore, it is important to develop suitable polymer nanocomposites as encapsulation materials to protect such devices. This work presents a technique based on grafting between surface-decorated gamma-alumina nanoparticles and polymer to make nanocomposites that can be used for the encapsulation of devices. Alumina was functionalized with allyltrimethoxysilane and used to conjugate polymer molecules (hydride-terminated polydimethylsiloxane) through a platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray-photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the surface chemistry of the nanoparticles after surface modification. The grafting density of alkene groups on the surface of the modified nanoparticles was calculated using CHN and thermogravimetric analyses. The thermal stability of the composites was also evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis. The nanoindentation technique was used to analyze the mechanical characteristics of the composites. The densities of the composites were evaluated using a density gradient column, and the morphology of the composites was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. All of our studies reveal that the composites have good thermal stability and mechanical flexibility and, thus, can potentially be used for the encapsulation of organic photovoltaic devices.

Four types of cationic collectors were tested and evaluated for their performance in the reverse flotation of silica from the spiral preconcentrate of Kudremukh iron ore. A stagewise flotation was conducted by adding the reagent in three stages. Starch was used to depress hematite. Silica flotation was found to be very sensitive to the amount of cationic reagent added. The performance of the reagents was evaluated based on the percentage of silica and iron in the concentrate and percent recovery of iron obtained in the concentrate. Tests of significance, namely, t-test and F-test were performed to select the best two reagents for further investigations.

An experimental programme based on statistical analysis was used for optimizing the reverse Rotation of silica from non-magnetic spiral preconcentrate of Kudremukh iron ore. Flotation of silica with amine and starch as the Rotation reagents was studied to estimate the optimum reagent levels at various mesh of grind. The experiments were first carried out using a two level three factor design. Analysis of the results showed that two parameters namely, the concentration level of the amine collector and the mesh of grind, were significant. Experiments based on an orthogonal design of the hexagonal type were then carried out to determine the effects of these two variables, on recovery and grade of the concentrate. Regression equations have been developed as models. Response contours have been plotted using the 'path of steepest ascent', maximum response has been optimized at 0.27 kg/ton of amine collector, 0.5 kg/ton of starch and mesh of grind of 48.7% passing 300 mesh to give a recovery of 83.43% of Fe in the concentrate containing 66.6% Fe and 2.17% SiO2.

We demonstrate an ultrafast method for the formation of, graphene supported Pt catalysts by the co-reduction of graphene oxide and Pt salt using ethylene glycol under microwave irradiation conditions. Detailed analysis of the mechanism of formation of the hybrids indicates a synergistic co-reduction mechanism whereby the presence of the Pt ions leads to a faster reduction of GO and the presence of the defect sites on the reduced GO serves as anchor points for the heterogeneous nucleation of Pt. The resulting hybrid consists of ultrafine nanoparticles of Pt uniformly distributed on the reduced GO susbtrate. We have shown that the hybrid exhibits good catalytic activity for methanol oxidation and hydrogen conversion reactions. The mechanism is general and applicable for the synthesis of other multifunctional hybrids based on graphene.

A multifunctional iron oxide based nanoformulation for combined cancer-targeted therapy and multimodal imaging has been meticulously designed and synthesized using a chemoselective ligation approach. Novel superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles simultaneously functionalized with amine, carboxyl, and azide groups were fabricated through a sequence of stoichiometrically controllable partial succinylation and Cu (II) catalyzed diazo transfer on the reactive amine termini of 2-aminoethylphosphonate grafted magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs). Functional moieties associated with MNP surface were chemoselectively conjugated with rhodamine B isothiocyanate (RITC), propargyl folate (FA), and paclitaxel (PTX) via tandem nucleophic addition of amine to isothithiocyanates, Cu (I) catalyzed azide-alkyne click chemistry and carbodiimide-promoted esterification. An extensive in vitro study established that the bioactives chemoselectively appended to the magnetite core bequeathed multifunctionality to the nanoparticles without any loss of activity of the functional molecules. Multifunctional nanoparticles, developed in the course of the study, could selectively target and induce apoptosis to folate-receptor (FR) overexpressing cancer cells with enhanced efficacy as compared to the free drug. In addition, the dual optical and magnetic properties of the synthesized nanoparticles aided in the real-time tracking of their intracellular pathways also as apoptotic events through dual fluorescence and MR-based imaging.

Passing a H-2-CH4 mixture over oxide spinels containing two transition elements as in Mg0.8MyMz'Al2O4 (M, M' = Fe, Co or Ni, y + z = 0.2) at 1070 degrees C produces small alloy nanoparticles which enable the formation of carbon nanotubes. Surface area measurements are found to be useful for assessing the yield and quality of the nanotubes. Good-quality single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) have been obtained in high yields with the FeCo alloy nanoparticles, as evidenced by transmission electron microscope images and surface area measurements. The diameter of the SWNTs is in the 0.8-5 nm range, and the multiwalled nanotubes, found occasionally, possess very few graphite layers. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The ion conduction and thermal properties of composite solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) comprising Poly(ethylene) Glycol (PEG, mol wt. 2000), lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) and insulating Mn0.03Zn0.97Al2O4 nanoparticle fillers were studied by complex impedance analysis and DSC techniques. The average size of the nanoparticles was determined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) using Scherrer's equation and was found to be similar to 8 nm. The same was also determined by TEM imaging and found to be similar to 12 nm. The glass transition temperature T, as measured by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), showed a minimum at 5 mol% of narroparticles. Fractional crystallinity was determined using DSC. NMR was used to deter-mine crystallinity of a pure PEG sample, which was then used as the standard. Fractional crystallinity X. was the lowest for 5 mol% and beyond. The ionic conductivity of the composite polymer electrolyte containing 5 mol% Mn0.03Zn0.97Al2O4 nanoparticles was found to be 1.82 x 10(-5) S/cm, while for the pristine one, it was 7.27 x 10(-7) S/cm at room temperature. As a function of nanoparticle content, conductivity was observed to go through two maxima, one at around 5 mol% and another shallower one at around 12 mol%. The temperature dependence of conductivity could be divided into two regions, one consistent with Arrhenius behaviour and the other with VTF. We conclude that the enhancement of ionic conductivity on the addition of Mn0.03Zn0.97Al2O4 nanoparticles is a result of reduction in both the T, and the crystallinity. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Selective separation of haematite from alumina and silica/calcite was achieved through microbiologically induced flotation and flocculation in presence of Bacillus subtilis. Bacterial metabolites containing extracellular proteins were characterized from mineral-grown bacterial cell free extract. Bacteria can adhere to mineral surfaces and influence subsequent flotation of the minerals. Cells and metabolic products of bacteria were used in flotation, flocculation and adsorption studies on oxide minerals. Bacteria functions as a stronger depressant for haematite. Selective affinity of the bacterial cells towards the mineral surface was observed through adsorption studies. Bacterial byproduct like extracellular protein (EP) was isolated from bacteria. The protein profile of the EP of bacterial cells grown in presence and absence of minerals (haematite, corundum, quartz and calcite) was also studied. The role of such proteins in selective mineral separation was demonstrated through microbially induced selective flotation. This study has demonstrated the utility and amenability of microbially induced mineral beneficiation through the use of bacterially generated metabolic products and mineral-grown bacterial cells.
