The method of characteristics coupled with a log-spiral failure surface was used to develop a theory for vertical uplift capacity of shallow horizontal strip anchors in a general c-phi soil. Uplift-capacity factors F(c), F(q) and F(gamma), for the effects of cohesion, surcharge, and density, respectively, have been established as functions of embedment ratio lambda and angle of friction phi. The extent of the failure surface at the ground has also been determined. Comparisons made with existing test results support the predictive capability of the theory, and comparisons with the analysis proposed by Meyerhof and Adams show the proposed analysis provides slightly more conservative predictions of pullout capacity.

An interaction analysis of an axially loaded single pile and pile group with and without a pile cap in a layered soil medium has been investigated using the two-dimensional photoelastic method. A study of the pile or pile group behaviour has been made, varying the pile cap thickness as well as the embedded length of the pile in the hard stratum. The shear stress distribution along the pile-soil interface, non-dimensionalized settlement values of the single pile and the interaction factor for the pile group have been presented. Wherever possible, the results of the present analysis have been compared with available numerical solutions.

This paper deals with an experimental study on flexural bond strength of masonry using various blocks in combination with different mortars. Flexural bond strength of masonry has been determined by testing stack-bonded prisms using a modified bond wrench test set-up. The effect of mortar composition and strength on the masonry's. flexural bond strength using three types of masonry units (stabilized mud blocks, stabilized soil-sand blocks and burnt brick) has been examined. The effect of the masonry unit's moisture content on flexural bond strength has also been studied. Increases in mortar strength lead to increased flexural bond strength for cement mortar, irrespective of the type of masonry unit. It has been found that combination mortars, such as soil-cement mortar and cement-lime mortar, lead to better bond strength compared to cement mortars. The moisture content of the masonry unit at the time of casting has displayed significant influence on the flexural bond strength of the masonry. It has been found that for each type of masonry unit, an optimum moisture content exists, beyond which the flexural bond strength falls off quickly.

This study concerns the effect of duration of load increment (up to 24 h) on the consolidation properties of expansive black cotton soil (liquid limit = 81%) and nonexpansive kaolinite (liquid limit = 49%). It indicates that the amount and rate of compression are not noticeably affected by the duration of loading for a standard sample of 25 mm in height and 76.2 mm in diameter with double drainage. Hence, the compression index and coefficient of consolidation can be obtained with reasonable accuracy even if the duration of each load increment is as short as 4 h. The secondary compression coefficient (C-alpha epsilon) for kaolinite can be obtained for any pressure range with 1/2 h of loading, which, however, requires 4 h for black cotton soil. This is because primary consolidation is completed early in the case of kaolinite. The paper proves that the conventional consolidation test can be carried out with much shorter duration of loading (less than 4 h) than the standard specification of 24 h or more even for remolded fine-grained soils.

As a seepage barrier slurry trench material should have a relatively low coefficient of permeability, in the range of 10(-7) cm/s, and at the same time should be compatible with surrounding material with regard to compressibility. Although bentonite-sand/soil mixes are used widely, there is no specific engineering approach to proportion these mixes that satisfies the above practical requirements. In this paper, a generalized approach is presented for predicting the permeability and compressibility characteristics of mixes with minimum input parameters. This approach will be helpful in proportioning mixes and predicting corresponding changes in engineering behavior. It is possible to proportion a mix to arrive at the required compressibility without affecting the permeability. This is explained using an illustrative example.

This paper critically appraises the limitations of the liquid-limit water content of clayey soils determined conventionally either by percussion cup or by the cone penetration method. It is shown that the conventional liquid limit and plastic limit are arbitrary, strength-based water contents and that they cannot represent the plasticity limits, and that the state of the soil-water system at the conventional liquid limit does not correspond to a stress-free reference state. The present investigation identifies three characteristic limiting water contents for a soil-water system which have well-defined, unique mechanisms controlling them, namely the free swell limit, settling limit and shrinkage limit. Simple procedures for the determination of the free swell limit and settling limit of natural soils are presented. The settling limit is shown to be the 'real liquid limit' of any clayey soil. With a number of experimental illustrations, it is clearly shown that the settling limit represents the maximum water-holding capacity of clayey soils and that it corresponds to the stress-free reference state.

Standard Proctor compaction test data were generated for 3 soils with liquid limit water contents ranging from 48% to 84%. It has been established that by defining a soil by its liquid limit and coarse fraction, the path of compaction for a specific compactive effort can be predicted via a simple density-water content-liquid limit relationship. The soil moisture characteristic (SMC) forms an important input to mathematical models of water and solute transport in the unsaturated-soil zone. Owing to their simplicity and ease of use, texture-based regression models are commonly used to estimate the SMC from basic soil properties. In this study, the performances of six such regression models were evaluated on three soils. Moisture characteristics generated by the regression models were statistically compared with the characteristics developed independently from laboratory and in-situ retention data of the soil profiles. Results of the statistical performance evaluation, while providing useful information on the errors involved in estimating the SMC, also highlighted the importance of the nature of the data set underlying the regression models. Among the models evaluated, the one possessing an underlying data set of in-situ measurements was found to be the best estimator of the in-situ SMC for all the soils. Considerable errors arose when a textural model based on laboratory data was used to estimate the field retention characteristics of unsaturated soils.

Geophysical methods are becoming more popular nowadays in the field of hydrology due to their time and space efficiency. So an attempt has been made here to relate electrical resistivity with soil moisture content in the field. The experiments were carried out in an experimental watershed `Mulehole' in southern India, which is a forested watershed with approximately 80% red soil. Five auger holes were drilled to perform the soil moisture and electrical resistivity measurements in a toposequence having red and black soils, with sandy weathered soil at the bottom. Soil moisture was measured using neutron probe and electrical resistivity was measured using electrical logging tool. The results indicate that electrical resistivity measurements can be used to measure soil moisture content for red soils only.

A discussion of a technical note with the aforementioned title by Day and Marsh, published in this journal (Volume 121, Number 7, July 1995), is presented. Discussers Robinson and Allam assert that the authors' application of the pore-pressure parameter A to predict and quantify swell or collapse of compacted soils is hard to use because the authors visualize the collapse-swell phenomenon to occur in compacted soils broadly classified as sands and clays. The literature demonstrates that mineralogy has an important role in the volume change behavior of fine-grained soils. Robinson and Allam state that the A-value measurements may not completely predict the type of volume change anticipated in compacted soils on soaking without soil clay mineralogy details. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.

The consistency of very soft sediments prevents the conventional oedometer test from being applied to study their compressibility and permeability characteristics. The hydraulic consolidation test in existence requires sophisticated instrumentation and testing procedures. The present paper proposes a seepage-force-induced consolidation testing procedure for studying the compressibility and permeability behavior of soft sediments at low effective stress levels. The good agreement that has been observed between the results obtained from the proposed method and the conventional oedometer test at overlapping effective stress levels indicates that the proposed method can be used to study the compressibility and permeability characteristics of soft sediments at low effective stress levels satisfactorily.

Full-scale test embankments, with and without geotextile reinforcement, were constructed on soft Bangkok clay. The performances of these embankments are evaluated and compared with each other on the basis of field measurements and FEM analysis. The analyses of failure mechanisms and the investigations on the embankment stability using undrained conditions were also done to determine the critical embankment height and the corresponding geotextile strain. The high-strength geotextile can reduce the plastic deformation in the underlying foundation soil, increase the collapse height of the embankment on soft ground, and produce a two-step failure mechanism. In this case study, the critical strain in the geotextile corresponding to the primary failure of foundation soils may be taken as 2.5-3% irrespective of the geotextile reinforcement stiffness. An apparatus in the direct shear mode has been developed to conduct soil-soil and soil-solid material interface tests in the undrained condition. Evaluation of the apparatus showed that all the requirements for simulating the undrained condition of shear are satisfied. The interface test results show that the adhesion factor a increases with the surface roughness of the solid material. In the case of the normally consolidated state, alpha is practically independent of the undrained shear strength of the clay for a given surface. For the overconsolidated state, alpha depends on the undrained shear strength and the overconsolidation ratio for smooth surfaces but for rough surfaces; alpha is independent of both undrained shear strength and overconsolidation ratio.
