Laser damage studies in nonlinear optical crystal sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate

We report the surface laser damage threshold in sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate, a nonlinear optical crystal. The experiment is performed with a pulsed Nd:YAG laser in TEM00 mode. The single shot damage thresholds are 11.16 +/- 0.28GWcm(-2) and 1.25 +/- 0.02GWcm(-2) for 1064 nm and 532 nm laser wavelengths respectively. A close correlation between the laser damage threshold and mechanical hardness is observed. A possible mechanism of laser damage is discussed.

Microscopic Frictional Response of Sodium Oleate Self-Assembled on Steel

The article peruses the frictional response of an important metal working lubricant additive, sodium oleate. Frictional force microscopy is used to track the response of molecules self-assembled on a steel substrate of 3–4 nm roughness at 0% relative humidity. The friction-normal load characteristic emerges as bell-shaped, where the peak friction and normal load at peak friction are both sensitive to substrate roughness. The frictional response at loads lower than that associated with the peak friction is path reversible while at higher loads the loading and unloading paths are different. We suggest that a new low-friction interface material is created when the normal loads are high.

Synthesis of BaSO4 nanoparticles by precipitation method using sodium hexa metaphosphate as a stabilizer

We describe the synthesis and structure of Barium sulfate nanoparticles by precipitation method in the presence of water soluble inorganic stabilizing agent, sodium hexametaphosphate, (NaPO3)(6). The structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld refinement method using powder X-ray diffraction data. Barium sulfate nanoparticles were crystallized in the orthorhombic structure with space group Pbnm (No. 62) having the lattice parameters a = 7.215(1) (angstrom), b = 8.949(1) (angstrom) and c = 5.501 (1) (angstrom) respectively. Transmission electron microscopy study reveals that the nanoparticles are size range, 30-50 nm. Fourier transform infrared spectra showed distinct absorption due to the SO42- moiety at 1115 and 1084 cm(-1) indicating formation of barium sulfate nanoparticles free from the phosphate group from the stabilizer used in the synthesis. Phase behavior of concentrated aqueous solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium hydroxy naphthoate (SHN)

We have characterized the phase behavior of mixtures of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and the organic salt 3-sodium-2-hydroxy naphthoate (SHN) over a wide range of surfactant concentrations using polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. A variety of liquid crystalline phases, such as hexagonal, lamellar with and without curvature defects, and nematic, are observed in these mixtures. At high temperatures the curvature defects in the lamellar phase are annealed gradually on decreasing the water content. However, at lower temperatures these two lamellar structures are separated by an intermediate phase, where the bilayer defects appear to order into a lattice. The ternary phase diagram shows a high degree of symmetry about the line corresponding to equimolar CTAB/SHN composition, as in the case of mixtures of cationic and anionic surfactants.

Dipole moments and structure of some organoselenium compounds

The dipole moments of di-p-tolyl selenide (1.74 D), di-p-tolyl selenide (1.00 D), di-m-tolyl selenide (1.66 D), di-p-anisyl selenide (2.35 D) and di-p-tolyl selenium dichloride (3.69 D) have been determined in benzene at 35°. The results are analysed in terms of mesomeric effects and internal rotation in these systems. The dipole moments of a few aliphatic selenides have been theoretically evaluated.

Spectroscopic studies of n-donor - σ-acceptor systems: Carbonyl and thiocarbonyl compounds as donors

The interaction of ketones and various thiocarbonyl derivatives with iodine has been examined. The thermodynamics of the interaction of carbonyl and thiocarbonyl donors have been discussed and compared.

Separation of vitamins A1 and A2 allied compounds by thin-layer chromatography

A simple and rapid method for the separation of vitamins A1 and A2 and allied compounds by thin-layer chromatography using kieselgel has been described. The method, however, cannot bbe applied for quantitative estimation.

Charge distribution, dipole moment and molecular structure of silyl compounds

The formal charge distribution and hence the electric moments of a number of halosilanes and their methyl derivatives have been calculated by the method of Image and Image . The difference between the observed and the calculated values in simple halosilanes is attributed to a change in the hybridization of the terminal halogen atom and in methyl halosilanes to the enhanced electron release of the methyl group towards silicon compared with carbon.

Infrared absorption studies on some derivatives of xanthic, dithiocarbamic and trithiocarbonic acids

The infrared absorption spectra of some of the derivatives of xanthic Image dithiocarbamic Image and trithiocarbonic Image acids are studied in the sodium chloride optics region and the bands assigned to group frequencies. The position of C---O---C and C=S bands in the derivatives of xanthic acid has been discussed from theoretical and experimental evidences and it is suggested that the two strong bands around 1200 and 1030 cm−1 are due to the Image group. The bands around 980 and 1050 cm−1 in the derivatives of dithiocarbamic and trithiocarbonic acids respectively have been assigned to C=S group frequencies. These bands shift to lower frequency in the corresponding ionic compounds while the bands around 1030 and 1200 cm−1 in the ionic compounds of xanthic acid shift to higher and lower frequencies respectively.

A colorimetric method for determination of pyrocatechol and related substances

A colorimetric assay for the quantitative determination of catecholic compounds was developed. The method was based on the observation that a red color was formed when nitrite was added to a solution containing pyrocatechol and sodium tungstate. Aromatic amines interfere with the reaction but this could be overcome by the addition of formaldehyde. When interfering substances are present along with pyrocatechol, it can be readily separated by paper chromatography and estimated after elution from the filter paper.

Electric dipole moments and molecular structure of aliphatic nitro compounds and oximes

Using the treatment of Smith et al. charge distributions in and consequently the dipole moments of some aliphatic nitro compounds and oximes have been evaluated. The mesomeric moment derived as a difference between the calculated and the observed values gives a clear picture as to how the positive (+M) and the negative (-M) mesomeric effects operate in such systems.

Nature, stability and bonding of the peroxy group in peroxy titanium compounds

Some physicochemical properties of peroxy titanium compounds are explained by assigning a strained triangular ring structure to the peroxy titanyl group, with a bent and reduced overlap of the O---O bonding orbitals. The stability of the peroxy group is found to depend on the stability of the other ligands. The decreasing order of stability of the peroxy group in the compounds is as: oxalato > meleato > malonato > sulphato > peroxide of titanium.

Raman spectrum of sodium iodide

Raman spectrum of a single crystal of sodium iodide has been recorded for the first time using lambda 2537 excitation. The general features of the spectrum are discussed in the light of the existing theories on the dynamics of the alkali halides.
