Tetragonal ZrO2 was synthesized by the solution combustion technique using glycine as the fuel. The compound was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and BET surface area analysis. The ability of this compound to adsorb dyes was investigated, and the compound had a higher adsorption capacity than commercially activated carbon. Infrared spectroscopic observations were used to determine the various interactions and the groups responsible for the adsorption activity of the compound. The effects of the initial concentration of the dye, temperature, adsorbent concentration, and pH of the solution were studied. The kinetics of adsorption was described as a first-order process, and the relative magnitudes of internal and external mass transfer processes were determined. The equilibrium adsorption was also determined and modeled by a composite Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm.

A differential pulse polarographic (DPP) method based on the adsorption catalytic current in a medium containing chlorate and 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine) is suggested for the determination of molybdenum(VI). Experimental conditions such as pH and the composition of supporting electrolyte have been optimized to get a linear calibration graph at trace levels of Mo(VI). The sensitivity for molybdenum can be considerably enhanced by this method. The influence of possible interferences on the catalytic current has been investigated. The sensitivity of the method is compared with those obtained for other DPP methods for molybdenum. A detection limit of 1.0 x 10(-8) mol/L has been found.

The higher substrate and chiral auxiliary concentration is a pre-requisite to obtain efficient separation of H-1 NMR signals of enantiomers. The higher concentration of chiral lanthanide shift reagents provides broadened spectral lines resulting in a severe loss of resolution between the enantiomer resonances. In order to circumvent such difficulties, herein we present the application and the usefulness of a selective F-1 decoupled correlation (COSY) experiment which yields proton decoupled proton spectra in the indirect dimension. The potentiality of the experiment is demonstrated on several chiral compounds possessing different functional groups, employing either a lanthanide shift reagent or a solvating reagent as chiral auxiliaries. Results of performance measurement of a small cooling capacity laboratory model of an adsorption refrigeration system for thermal management of electronics are compiled. This adsorption cooler was built with activated carbon as the adsorbent and HFC 134a as the refrigerant to produce a cooling capacity under 5 W using waste heat up to 90 degrees C. The thermal compression process is obtained from an ensemble of four solid sorption compressors. Parametric study was conducted with cycle times of 16 and 20 min, heat source temperatures from 73 to 87 degrees C and cooling loads from 3 to 4.9W. Overall system performance is analyzed using two indicators, namely, cooling effectiveness and normalized exergetic efficiency. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The selective withdrawal of pituitary gonadotropins through specific antibodies is known to cause disruption of spermatogenesis. The cellular mechanism responsible for the degenerative changes under isolated effect of luteinizing hormone (LH) deprivation is not clear. Using antibodies specific to LH we have investigated the effect of immunoneutralization of LH on apoptotic cell death in the testicular cells of the immature and the adult rats. Specific neutralization of LH resulted in apoptotic cell death of germ cells, both in the immature and the adult rats. The germ cells from control animals showed predominantly high molecular weight DNA, while the antiserum treated group showed DNA cleavage into low molecular weight DNA ladder characteristic of apoptosis. This pattern could be observed within 24 h of a/s administration and the effect could be reversed by testosterone. The germ cells were purified by centrifugal elutriation and the vulnerability of germ cell types to undergo apoptosis under LH deprivation was investigated. The round spermatids and the pachytene spermatocytes were found to be the most sensitive germ cells to lack of LH and underwent apoptosis. Interestingly, spermatogonial cells were found to be the least sensitive germ cells to the lack of LH in terms of apoptotic cell death. Results show that LH, in addition to being involved in the germ cell differentiation, is also involved in cell survival and prevent degeneration of germ cells during spermatogenesis. Apoptotic DNA fragmentation may serve as a useful marker for the study of hormonal regulation of spermatogenesis and the specific neutralization of gonadotropic hormones can be a reliable model for the study of the molecular mechanism of apoptosis.

We report the C-HETSERF experiment for determination of long- and short-range homo- and heteronuclear scalar couplings ((n)J(HH) and (n)J(XH), n >= 1) of organic molecules with a low sensitivity dilute heteronucleus in natural abundance. The method finds significant advantage in measurement of relative signs of long-range heteronuclear total couplings in chiral organic liquid crystal. The advantage of the method is demonstrated for the measurement of residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) in enantiomers oriented in the chiral liquid crystal with a focus to unambiguously assign R/S designation in a 2D spectrum. The alignment tensor calculated from the experimental RDCs and with the computed structures of enantiomers obtained by DFT calculations provides the size of the back-calculated RDCs. Smaller root-mean-square deviations (rmsd) between experimental and calculated RDCs indicate better agreement with the input structure and its correct designation of the stereogenic center.

The interaction of guar gum with biotite mica has been investigated through adsorption, flotation and electrokinetic measurements. The adsorption densities of guar gum increase with increase of pH and the isotherms exhibit Langmuirian behaviour. Pretreatment of mica with a complexing agent such as EDTA results in a decrease in the adsorption density, highlighting the contribution of metal ions to the adsorption process. An increase in the surface face-to-edge ratio lends to an increase in the adsorption density. The flotation recoveries decrease as a function of pH, complementing the adsorption results. However, polymer depressant ability is reduced in the case of EDTA treated mica, consequent to reduction of metallic sites. Electrokinetic measurements portray conformational rearrangements of macromolecules with the loading, resulting in the shift of the shear plane, further away from the interface. Dissolution experiments indicate release of metal ions from mica, while co-precipitation tests confirm polymer-metal ion interaction in the bulk solution. The adsorption process is governed by hydrogen bonding as well as chemical interaction between guar gum and the surface metal hydroxide groups of mica. (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

The present investigation analyses the thermodynamic behaviour of the surfaces and adsorption as a function of temperature and composition in the Fe-S-O melts based on the Butler's equations. The calculated-values of the surface tensions exhibit an elevation or depression depending on the type of the added solute at a concentration which coincides with that already present in the system. Generally, the desorption of the solutes as a function of temperature results in an initial increase followed by a decrease in the values of the surface tension. The observations are analyzed based on the surface interaction parameters which are derived in the present research.

It is known from temperature-programmed desorption studies that the binding energy of thiophene over Mo/gamma-Al2O3 and Co-Mo/gamma-Al2O3, hydrodesulfurization catalysts, is lower in the presence of hydrogen. The adsorption of thiophene on clean and hydrogen-adsorbed MoS2 was modelled using extended Huckel tight binding band structure calculations. In the eta(1) adsorption configuration the calculations show a lower binding energy for adsorption on the hydrogen-preadsorbed surface similar to that observed experimentally. The lowering is due to an increased occupancy of the Mo density of states in the presence of hydrogen.

Using a lattice model for adsorption in microporous materials, pure component adsorption isotherms are obtained within a mean field approximation for methane at 300 K and xenon at 300 and 360 K in zeolite NaA. It is argued that the increased repulsive adsorbate-adsorbate interactions at high coverages must play an important role in determining the adsorption behavior. Therefore, this feature is incorporated through a "coverage-dependent interaction'' model, which introduces a free, adjustable parameter. Another important feature, the site volume reduction, has been treated in two ways: a van der Waal model and a 1D hard-rod theory [van Tassel et al., AIChE J. 40, 925 (1994)]; we have also generalized the latter to include all possible adsorbate overlap scenarios. In particular, the 1D hard-rod model, with our coverage-dependent interaction model, is shown to be in best quantitative agreement with the previous grand canonical Monte Carlo isotherms. The expressions for the isosteric heats of adsorption indicate that attractive and repulsive adsorbate-adsorbate interactions increase and decrease the heats of adsorption, respectively. It is concluded that within the mean field approximation, our simple model for repulsive interactions and the 1D hard-rod model for site volume reduction are able to capture most of the important features of adsorption in confined regions. The adsorption of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) onto alumina has been studied as a function of pH, both individually and in the presence of each other. The adsorption density of PAA is found to decrease with an increase of pH while that of PVA shows the opposite trend. In a binary system containing PAA and PVA, the presence of PVA does not affect the adsorption of PAA onto alumina, but the addition of PAA diminishes the adsorption of PVA in the pH range investigated. The adsorption isotherm of PAA at acidic pH exhibits high-affinity Langmuirian behavior. The isotherms for PVA appear rounded and are of the low-affinity type, Once again the adsorption isotherms of PAA remain unaltered in the presence of PVA whereas those of PVA are significantly affected resulting in a lowering of the adsorption density consequent to PAA addition. A variation in the sequence of addition of PAA and PVA does not affect the adsorption behavior of either of the polymers, The electrokinetic behavior of alumina with PAA is hardly influenced by the addition of PVA, On the other hand, the electrophoretic mobility of alumina in the presence of PVA is significantly altered in the presence of PAA and closely resembles the trend observed with PAA alone. Desorption studies reveal that over 80% of PVA could be desorbed in the pH range 3-9 whereas in the case of PAA, the percent desorption increases from 20 to about 70% as the pH is increased from about 3 to 8. Solution conductivity tests confirm interaction of aluminum species and PAA in the bulk solution. FTIR spectroscopic data provide evidence in support of hydrogen bonding and chemical interaction in the case of the PAA-alumina system and hydrogen bonding with respect to the PVA-alumina interaction.
