Nanoclusters of bimetallic Pt-Ru are electrochemically deposited on conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)(PEDOT), which is also electrochemically deposited on a carbon paper substrate. The bimetallic deposition is carried out in an acidic electrolyte consisting of chloroplatinic acid and ruthenium chloride at 0.0 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE) on PEDOT coated carbon paper. A thin layer PEDOT on a carbon paper substrate facilitates the formation of uniform, well-dispersed, nano clusters of Pt-Ru of mean diameter of 123 nm, which consist of nanosize particles. In the absence of PEDOT, the size of the clusters is about 251 nm, which are unevenly distributed on carbon paper substrate. Cyclic voltammetry studies suggest that peak currents of methanol oxidation are several times greater on PtRu-PEDOT electrode than on Pt-Ru electrode in the absence of PEDOT. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The kinetics of thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) in solution was investigated at various temperatures (210-250degreesC). The degradation rate coefficients were determined from the time evolution of the molecular weight distribution (MWD). The energy of activation, determined from the temperature dependence of the rate coefficient, was 26.6 kcal/mol. The degradation of PVC was also studied in the presence of a catalyst (HZSM-5 zeolite). The results indicated that increase of the degradation rate of PVC is first order with the HZSM-5 concentration up to 50 g/L and zero order at higher concentrations. The thermal degradation kinetics of PVC in the presence of 50 g/L of the catalyst was studied at various temperatures. The temperature dependency of the rate coefficient was used to calculate the activation energy (21.5 kcal/mol). This is consistent with the observation that the presence of a catalyst generally decreases the activation energy and promotes degradation. (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Inc.

In this paper, we report the results pretaining to the study of the structural, microstructural and the dielectric properties of poly(I-lithocholic acid) (PL), and the composite of PL dispersed in PMMA. The density of the composites was measured using Archimedes principle. The microstructural properties of the composities were studied using XRD and SEM techniques, which give an idea about the dispersion of the polymer PL in the PMMA matrix. The dielectric constants er of the composites were measured with a HP 4194A Impedance/Gain-Phase Analyzer in the frequency range 100 Hz-40 MHz at room temperature. The dielectric constants of the composites at different frequencies were predicted using Clasius-Mossotti and Maxwell's models.

Poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimers of up to four generations composed of a phloroglucinol core, branching components, and pentamethylene spacers are synthesized by a divergent growth methodology. A repetitive synthetic sequence of phenolic O-alkylation and O-benzyl deprotection reactions are adopted for the synthesis of these dendrimers. The peripheries of the dendrimers contain 6, 12, 24, and 48 phenolic hydroxyl groups, either in the protected or unprotected form, for the first, second, third, and fourth generations, respectively. Because of the presence of hydrophilic exterior and relatively hydrophobic interior regions, alkaline aqueous solutions of these dendrimers are able to solubilize an otherwise insoluble pyrene molecule and these supramolecular complexes precipitate upon neutralization of the aqueous solutions.

Ultrasonic degradation of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was carried out in several solvents and some mixtures of solvents. The time evolution of molecular weight distribution (MWD), determined by gel permeation chromatography, is analysed by continuous distribution kinetics. The rate coefficients for polymer degradation are determined for each solvent. The variation of rate coefficients is correlated with the vapour pressure of the solvent, kinematic viscosity of the solution and solvent-polymer interaction parameters. The vapour pressure and the kinematic viscosity of the solution are found to be more critical than other parameters (such as the Huggins and Flory-Huggins constants) in determining the degradation rates. The ultrasonic degradation of poly(vinyl acetate) was carried out in six different solvents and two mixtures of solvents. The evolution of molecular weight distribution (MWD) with time was determined with gel permeation chromatography. The observed MWDs were analyzed by continuous distribution kinetics. A stoichiometric kernel that accounts for preferential mid-point breakage of the polymer chains was used. The degradation rate coefficient of the polymer in each solvent was determined from the model. The variations of rate coefficients were correlated with vapor pressure of the solvent, the Flory–Huggins polymer–solvent interaction parameter and the kinematic viscosity of the solution. A lower saturation vapor pressure resulted in higher degradation rates of the polymer. The degradation rate increased with increasing kinematic viscosity.

The objective of the present in vitro research was to investigate cardiac tissue cell functions (specifically cardiomyocytes and neurons) on poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) (50:50 wt.%)-carbon nanofiber (CNF) composites to ascertain their potential for myocardial tissue engineering applications. CNF were added to biodegradable PLGA to increase the conductivity and cytocompatibility of pure PLGA. For this reason, different PLGA:CNF ratios (100:0, 75:25, 50:50,25:75, and 0:100 wt.%) were used and the conductivity as well as cytocompatibility of cardiomyocytes and neurons were assessed. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy analysis characterized the microstructure, chemistry, and crystallinity of the materials of interest to this study. The results show that PLGA:CNF materials are conductive and that the conductivity increases as greater amounts of CNF are added to PLGA, from OS m(-1) for pure PLGA (100:0 wt.%) to 5.5 x 10(-3) S m(-1) for pure CNF (0:100 wt.%). The results also indicate that cardiomyocyte density increases with greater amounts of CNF in PLGA (up to 25:75 wt.% PLGA:CNF) for up to 5 days. For neurons a similar trend to cardiomyocytes was observed, indicating that these conductive materials promoted the adhesion and proliferation of two cell types important for myocardial tissue engineering applications. This study thus provides, for the first time, an alternative conductive scaffold using nanotechnology which should be further explored for cardiovascular applications. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Poly(acrylic acid-co-sodium acrylate-co-acrylamide) superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) cross-linked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) were synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization. The SAPs were swollen in DI water, and it was found that the equilibrium swelling capacities varied with the acrylamide content. The SAPs were subjected to reversible swelling/deswelling cycles in DI water and aqueous NaCl solution, respectively. The effect of the addition of an electrolyte on the swelling of the SAP was explored. The equilibrium swelling capacity of the SAPs was found to decrease with increasing concentration of added electrolyte in the swelling medium. The effect of the particle size of the dry SAPs on the swelling properties was also investigated. A first order model was used to describe the kinetics of swelling/deswelling, and the equilibrium swelling capacity, limiting swelling capacity, and swelling/deswelling rate coefficients were determined.

Three groups of poly(mannitol citric dicarboxylate) [p(MCD)] copolyesters were synthesized by catalyst-free melt condensation of mannitol with acids. The resulting copolyesters were designated as poly(mannitol citric succinate) [p(MCSu)], poly(mannitol citric adipate) [p(MCA)], poly(mannitol citric sebacate) [p(MCS)]. The polymers were characterized by FTIR, (1)H NMR, and DSC analysis. The synthesized p(MCD) polymers exhibit glass transition temperatures ranging from 16.5 to 58.58 degrees C. The mechanical, degradation properties, and the drug-releasing characteristics of these polymers were investigated. It was observed that the mechanical properties of the p(MCD) polymers cover a wide range with Young's modulus of the polymer varying from 12.25 to 660 MPa. Hydrolytic degradation of all polymers was investigated by incubating polymer discs in PBS and the hydrolytic degradation of p(MCD) polymers followed the order, p(MCSu) > p(MCA) > p(MCS). This was attributed to the number of -CH(2)(units in the dicarboxylic monomers. The release of model drug compounds from the p(MCD) polymer discs was also studied. POLYM. ENG. The gamma-phase poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films are usually prepared using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent, regardless of preparation temperature. Here we report the crystallization of both alpha and gamma-phase PVDF films by varying preparation temperature using DMSO solvent. The gamma-phase PVDF films were annealed at 70, 90, 110, 130 and 160 degrees C for five hours. The changes in the phase contents in the PVDF at different annealing conditions have been described. When thin films were annealed at 90 degrees C for 5 h, maximum percentage of beta-phase appears in PVDF thin films. The gamma-phase PVDF films completely converted to alpha-phase when they were annealed at 160 degrees C for 5 h. From X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Raman studies, it is confirmed that the PVDF thin films, cast from solution and annealed at 90 degrees C for 5 h, have maximum percentage of beta-phase. The beta-phase PVDF shows a remnant polarization of 4.9 mu C/cm(2) at 1400 kV/cm at 1 Hz.

Dendrimers are ideal platforms to study multivalent effects due to the presence of uniform end groups at their peripheries. This report concerns with a study of multivalent dendritic catalysts, both within and across dendrimer generations, and their effects to mediate C-C bond forming reactions on multivalent substrates that have two and three acrylate reactive sites. As many as fourteen multivalent dendritic catalysts were prepared using 0-3 generations of poly(propyl ether imine) dendrimers, incorporated with Pd(II) catalytic sites, both within and across the dendrimer generations. C-C Bond forming reactions of these substrates with iodobenzene, mediated by uniform concentration of the metal across all catalysts, showed formation of partially and fully functionalized cinnamates in varying ratios, depending on the extent of clustering of catalytic moieties at the peripheries of dendrimers within a dendrimer generation. In a given generation, higher clustering of catalytic moieties greatly assisted multiple C-C bond formations than presenting the same in lesser number. The studies demonstrate true benefits of clustering catalytic moieties within a dendrimer generation and the beneficial effects applicable to catalysis of substrates presenting more than one reactive center. Castor oil-based poly(mannitol-citric sebacate) was synthesized by simple, catalyst-free melt condensation process using monomers having potential to be metabolized in vivo. The polymer was characterized using various techniques and the tensile and hydration properties of the polymers were also determined. The biocompatibility of the polymer was tested using human foreskin fibroblasts cells. The in vitro degradation studies show that the time for complete degradation of the polymer was more than 21 days. The usage of castor oil polyester as a drug carrier was analysed by doping the polymer with 5-fluorouracil model drug and the release rate was studied by varying the percentage loading of drugs and the pH of the PBS solution medium. The cumulative drug-release profiles exhibited a biphasic release with an initial burst release and cumulative 100% release within 42 h. To understand the role of the polymer as a drug carrier in the release behaviour, drug-release studies were conducted with another drug, isoniazid. The release behaviour of isoniazid drug from the same polymer matrix followed an nth order kinetic model and 100% cumulative release was achieved after 12 days. The variation in the release behaviour for two model drugs from the same polymer matrix suggests a strong interaction between the polymer and the drug molecule.

Inverse suspension polymerization was carried out to synthesize poly(acrylic acid-co-sodium acrylate-co-acrylamide) superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) crosslinked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA). The equilibrium swelling capacities of the SAPs, determined by swelling them in DI water, were found to vary with the acrylamide (AM) content. The SAPs were used to adsorb four cationic dyes (Acriflavine, Auramine-O, Azure-I and Pyronin-Y). The effect of AM content in the SAPs on the adsorption of the cationic dyes was investigated. Different initial concentrations of Azure-I were used with the same amount of the SAP to explore the effect of initial dye concentration on the adsorption. The effect of the adsorbent amount was investigated by taking different amounts of SAP with a fixed initial concentration of Acriflavine. The kinetics of the dye adsorption was modeled by a first order model and the equilibrium amount of the dye adsorbed, adsorption rate coefficients, removal efficiency and partition coefficients were determined. Dendritic rnicroenvironments defined by dynamic internal cavities of a dendrimer were probed through geometric isomerization of stilbene and azobenzene. A third-generation poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimer with hydrophilic exterior and hydrophobic interior was used as a reaction cavity in aqueous medium. The dynamic inner cavity sizes were varied by utilizing alkyl linkers that connect the branch junctures from ethyl to n-pentyl moiety (C(2)G(3)-C(5)G(3)). Dendrimers constituted with n-pentyl linker were found to afford higher solubilities of stilbene and azobenzene. Direct irradiation of trans-stilbene showed that C(5)G(3) and C(4)G(3) dendrimers afforded considerable phenanthrene formation, in addition to cis-stilbene, whereas C(3)G(3) and C(2)G(3) gave only cis-stilbene. An electron-transfer sensitized trans-cis isomerization, using cresyl violet perchlorate as the sensitizer, also led to similar results. Thermal isomerization of cis-azobenzene to trans-azobenzene within dendritic microenvironments revealed that the activation energy of the cis- to trans-isomer was increasing in the series C(5)G(3) < C(4)G(3) < C(3)G(3)

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) based on acrylic acid (AA), sodium acrylate (SA), and acrylamide (AM) were synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization using ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinking agent. The equilibrium swelling capacities and the rates of swelling of SAPs varied with the AM content and followed first-order kinetics. The photodegradation of SAPs in their equilibrium swollen state was carried out by monitoring their swelling capacity and the residual weight fraction. The SAPs degraded in two stages, wherein the swelling capacity increased to a maximum and then subsequently decreased. Thermogravimetric analysis of the SAPs indicated that the copolymeric superabsorbents had intermediate thermal stability between the homopolymeric superabsorbents. The activation energies of SAPs with 0, 20, and 100 mol % AM content were determined by Kissinger method and were found to be 299, 248, and 147 kJ mol-1, respectively. The ultrasonic degradation of the superabsorbents was carried out in their equilibrium swollen state, and the change in the viscosity with ultrasonication time was used to quantify the degradation. The ultrasonic degradation of AA/SA superabsorbent was also investigated at various ultrasound intensities. The degradation rate coefficients were found to increase with the intensity of ultrasound. The ultrasonic degradation of AA/SA/AM (20% AM) was also carried out, and degradation rate was found to be more than that of the AA/SA superabsorbent. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
