In public utilities, under supply constraints, fairness considerations lead to a market failure. This paper characterizes a two-period principal-agent contract for demand management, that mitigates this market failure in urban water systems. The contract is designed as an extensive form mechanism using subgame perfect Nash equilibrium (SPNE) as the solution concept. The contract is fair; and is shown to be economically efficient if, in case of deviation by the agent, the gain to the agent and the loss to the principal are small. It is shown that the assumption can be avoided in an infinite horizon contract.

We report the results of an in situ small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) study of the aggregation of gold nanoparticles formed by an interfacial reaction at the toluene-water interface. The SAXS data provide a direct evidence for aggregate formation of nanoparticles having 1.3 nm gold core and an organic shell that gives a core-core separation of about 2.5 nm. Furthermore, the nanoparticles do not occupy all the cites of 13-member cluster. This occupancy decreases with reaction time and indicate reorganization of the clusters that generates planner disklike structures. A gradual increase in fractal dimension from 1.82 to 2.05 also indicate compactification of cluster aggregation with reaction time, the final exponent being close to 2 expected for disklike aggregates.

Relay selection for cooperative communications promises significant performance improvements, and is, therefore, attracting considerable attention. While several criteria have been proposed for selecting one or more relays, distributed mechanisms that perform the selection have received relatively less attention. In this paper, we develop a novel, yet simple, asymptotic analysis of a splitting-based multiple access selection algorithm to find the single best relay. The analysis leads to simpler and alternate expressions for the average number of slots required to find the best user. By introducing a new contention load' parameter, the analysis shows that the parameter settings used in the existing literature can be improved upon. New and simple bounds are also derived. Furthermore, we propose a new algorithm that addresses the general problem of selecting the best Q >= 1 relays, and analyze and optimize it. Even for a large number of relays, the scalable algorithm selects the best two relays within 4.406 slots and the best three within 6.491 slots, on average. We also propose a new and simple scheme for the practically relevant case of discrete metrics. Altogether, our results develop a unifying perspective about the general problem of distributed selection in cooperative systems and several other multi-node systems.

Oil droplets are dispersed in water by an anionic urfactant to form an emulsion. The lubricity of this emulsion in steel/steel interaction is explored in a ball on flat nanotribometer. The droplet size and charge are measured using dynamic light scattering, while the substrate charge density is estimated using the pH titration method. These data are combined to calculate the DLVO forces for the droplets generated for a range of surfactant concentration and two oil to water volume ratios. The droplets have a clear bi-modal size distribution. The study shows that the smaller droplets which experience weak repulsion are situated (at the highest DLVO barrier) much closer to the substrate than thebigger droplets, which experience the same DLVO force, are. We suggest that the smaller droplets thus play a more important role in lubricity than what the bigger droplets do. The largest volume of such small droplets occurs in the 0.5 mM-1 mM range of surfactant concentration and 1% oil to water volume ratio, where the coefficient of friction is also observed to be the least. Fe-substituted CeVO4 was synthesized by the solution combustion technique and characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and BET surface area analyzer. These compounds crystallized in tetragonal zircon structure with Fe substituted in ionic state for Ce3+ ions. The degradation of anionic and cationic dyes was studied over Fe-substituted CeVO4 compounds. The compounds showed high photocatalytic activity towards dye degradation. The effect of amount of substitution was studied by varying the Fe substitution from 1 to 10%. The rates decreased with increasing substitution of Fe in CeVO4 and 1% Fe substituted CeVO4 showed the highest photocatalytic activity. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The water-gas shift (WGS) reaction was carried out in the presence of Pd and Pt substituted nanocrystalline ceria catalysts synthesized by solution combustion technique. The catalysts were characterized by powder XRD and XPS. The noble metals were found to be present in ionic form substituted for the cerium atoms. The catalysts showed highactivity for the WGS reaction with high conversions below 250 degrees C. The products of reaction were only carbon dioxide and hydrogen, and no hydrocarbons were observed even in trace quantities. The reactions were carried out with different amounts of noble metal ion substitution and 2% Pt substituted ceria was found to be the best catalyst. The various possible mechanisms for the reaction were proposed and tested for their consistency with experimental data. The dual site mechanism best described the kinetics of the reaction and the corresponding rate parameters were obtained.

Noble metal substituted ionic catalysts were synthesized by solution combustion technique. The compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Zirconia supported compounds crystallized in tetragonal phase. The solid solutions of ceria with zirconia crystallized in fluorite structure. The noble metals were substituted in ionic form. The water-gas shift reaction was carried out over the catalysts.Negligible conversions were observed with unsubstituted compounds. The substitution of a noble metal ion was found to enhance the reaction rate. Equilibrium conversion was obtained below 250 degrees C in the presence of Pt ion substituted compounds. The formation of Bronsted acid-Bronsted base pairs was proposed to explain the activity of zirconia catalysts. The effect of oxide ion vacancies on the reactions over substituted ceria-zirconia solid solutions was established. (c)2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A correlation of the structural data on IS hydrates obtained by x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and proton magnetic resonance reveals that when a water molecule is hydrogen bonded into a crystal structure and the angle subtended at the donor water oxygen by the acceptor atoms deviates from the vapor H-O-H angle, bent hydrogen bonds are formed in preference to distortion of the H-O-H angle. Theoretical justification for this result is obtained from energy considerations by calculating the energy of formation of bent hydrogen bonds on the basis of the Lippincott-Schroeder potential function model for the hydrogen bond and the energy of deformation of the H-O-H angle from spectroscopic force constants.

ORANGE red and amorphous peroxy-titanium complexes of oxalic, malonic and maleic acids1-3, when vacuum-dried, have co-ordinated water molecules firmly bonded to the central titanium atom as shown in formula (I). The peroxy-oxygen from these compounds is slowly lost even at room temperature because of the strained peroxy-group3,4. The compounds, when kept at 95°-100°C. for about three days, give deperoxygenated compounds of the type (II). However, a sample of peroxy-titanium oxalate sealed in a glass tube lost all its peroxy-oxygen in about four years and gave a white crystalline basic oxalate (II). The amorphous nature of the compounds may be due to random hydrogen bonding in the complexes. The crystallinity observed in one of the deperoxygenated titanyl oxalates may be due to the rearrangement of the molecules during ageing for more than four years. The infra-red absorption of these compounds was studied to find out the effect of co-ordination and hydrogen bonding on the infra-red bands of the free water.

In this paper the classical problem of water wave scattering by two partially immersed plane vertical barriers submerged in deep water up to the same depth is investigated. This problem has an exact but complicated solution and an approximate solution in the literature of linearised theory of water waves. Using the Havelock expansion for the water wave potential, the problem is reduced here to solving Abel integral equations having exact solutions. Utilising these solutions, two sets of expressions for the reflection and transmission coefficients are obtained in closed forms in terms of computable integrals in contrast to the results given in the literature which, involved six complicated integrals in terms of elliptic functions. The two different expressions for each coefficient produce almost the same numerical results although it has not been possible to prove their equivalence analytically. The reflection coefficient is depicted against the wave number in a number of figures which almost coincide with the figures available in the literature wherein the problem was solved approximately by employing complementary approximations. Dithiocarbamates have been estimated previously by reaction with a strong acid, the carbon disulfide evolved being converted into a xanthate and the latter estimated iodimetrically. In the present method, a water-soluble dithiocarbamate is reacted with a decinormal mineral acid and the excess acid is determined to compute the amount of dithiocarbamate present. This method is applicable for the determination of a dithiocarbamate in a mixture containing thiuram disulfide.

Iodimetric estimation of dialkyl dithiocarbamate in alcoholic solution is not accurate. The method has not met with success for the water-soluble dithiocarbamates before. A simple and accurate iodimetric method has been developed for the estimation of water-soluble dithiocarbamates. The success of the method is due to the removal of the oxidation product which interferes during the titration with iodine.

The transmission electron microscopy images of in situ prepared multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)and polyaniline (PANI) composites show that nanotubes are well dispersed in aqueous medium, and the nanofibers of PANI facilitate intertube transport. Although low temperature transport indicates variable range hopping (VRH) mechanism, the dc and ac conductivity become temperature independent as the MWNT content increases. The onset frequency for the increase in conductivity is observed to be strongly dependent on the MWNT weight percent, and the ac conductivity can be scaled onto a master curve. The negative magnetoresistance is attributed to the forward interference scattering mechanism in VRH transport. (C) 2010 American.
