In this paper, we present an unrestricted Kannada online handwritten character recognizer which is viable for real time applications. It handles Kannada and Indo-Arabic numerals, punctuation marks and special symbols like $, &, # etc, apart from all the aksharas of the Kannada script. The dataset used has handwriting of 69 people from four different locations, making the recognition writer independent. It was found that for the DTW classifier, using smoothed first derivatives as features, enhanced the performance to 89% as compared to preprocessed co-ordinates which gave 85%, but was too inefficient in terms of time. To overcome this, we used Statistical Dynamic Time Warping (SDTW) and achieved 46 times faster classification with comparable accuracy i.e. 88%, making it fast enough for practical applications. The accuracies reported are raw symbol recognition results from the classifier. Thus, there is good scope of improvement in actual applications. Where domain constraints such as fixed vocabulary, language models and post processing can be employed. A working demo is also available on tablet PC for recognition of Kannada words.

K0.5La0.5Bi2Nb2O9, a relaxor, was synthesized and the structural studies confirmed it to be an n = 2 member of the Aurivillius oxides. The ½{h00} and ½{hk0} types of superlattice reflections in the electron diffraction patterns reflected the presence of ordered polar regions. A broad dielectric peak with frequency dependent dielectric maximum temperature was observed. The dielectric relaxation obeyed the Vogel-Fulcher relation wherein Ea = 0.04 eV, Tf = 428 K,and ωo = 1010 Hz. The diffuseness parameter γ = 2.003 established the relaxor nature and it was attributed to the A-site cationic disorder. The piezoelectric d31 coefficient was 0.5 pC/N at 300 K and 2 pC/N at 480 K.

We have identified a methanol- and biotin-starvation-inducible zinc finger protein named ROP [repressor of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK)] in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris. When P. pastoris strain GS115 (wild-type, WT) is cultured in biotin-deficient, glucose-ammonium (Bio(-)) medium, growth is suppressed due to the inhibition of anaplerotic synthesis of oxaloacetate, catalysed by the biotin-dependent enzyme pyruvate carboxylase (PC). Deletion of ROP results in a strain (Delta ROP) that can grow under biotin-deficient conditions due to derepression of a biotin- and PC-independent pathway of anaplerotic synthesis of oxaloacetate. Northern analysis as well as microarray expression profiling of RNA isolated from WT and Delta ROP strains cultured in Bio(-) medium indicate that expression of the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase gene (PEPCK) is induced in Delta ROP during biotin- or PC-deficiency even under glucose-abundant conditions. There is an excellent correlation between PEPCK expression and growth of Delta ROP in Bio(-) medium, suggesting that ROP-mediated regulation of PEPCK may have a crucial role in the biotin- and PC-independent growth of the Delta ROP strain. To our knowledge, ROP is the first example of a zinc finger transcription factor involved in the catabolite repression of PEPCK in yeast cells cultured under biotin- or PC-deficient and glucose-abundant conditions.

The spectral photocurrent characteristics of two donor-acceptor diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based copolymers (PDPP-BBT and TDPP-BBT) blended with a fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) were studied using Fourier-transform photocurrent spectroscopy (FTPS) and monochromatic photocurrent (PC) method. PDPP-BBT: PCBM shows the onset of the lowest charge transfer complex (CTC) state at 1.42 eV, whereas TDPP-BBT: PCBM shows no evidence of the formation of a midgap CTC state. The FTPS and PC spectra of P3HT:PCBM are also compared. The larger singlet state energy difference of TDPP-BBT and PCBM compared to PDPP-BBT/P3HT and PCBM obliterates the formation of a midgap CTC state resulting in an enhanced photovoltaic efficiency over PDPP-BBT: PCBM. This paper presents a new nine-node Lagrangian quadrilateral plate bending element (MQP9) using the Integrated Force Method (IFM) for the analysis of thin and moderately thick plate bending problems. Three degrees of freedom: transverse displacement w and two rotations theta(x) and theta(y) are considered at each node of the element. The Mindlin-Reissner theory has been employed in the formulation which accounts the effect of shear deformation. Many standard plate bending benchmark problems have been analyzed using the new element MQP9 for various grid sizes via Integrated Force Method to estimate defections and bending moments. These results of the new element MQP9 are compared with those of similar displacement-based plate bending elements available in the literature. The results are also compared with exact solutions. It is observed that the presented new element MQP9 is free from shear locking and produced, in general, excellent results in all plate bending benchmark problems considered.

Pyrochlore phase free [Pb0.94Sr0.06] [(Mn1/3Sb2/3)(0.05)(Zr0.53Ti0.47)(0.95)] O-3 ceramics has been synthesized with pure Perovskite phase by semi-wet route using the columbite precursor method. The field dependences of the dielectric response and the conductivity have been measured in a frequency range from 50 Hz to 1 MHz and in a temperature range from 303 K to 773 K. An analysis of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric permittivity with frequency has been performed, assuming a distribution of relaxation times. The scaling behavior of the dielectric loss spectra suggests that the distribution of the relaxation times is temperature independent. The SEM photographs of the sintered specimens present the homogenous structures and well-grown grains with a sharp grain boundary. The material exhibits tetragonal structure. When measured at frequency (100 Hz), the polarization shows a strong field dependence. Different piezoelectric figures of merit (k(p), d(33) and Q(m)) of the material have also been measured obtaining their values as 0.53, 271 pC/N and 1115, respectively, which are even higher than those of pure PZT with morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition. Thus the present ceramics have the optimal overall performance and are promising candidates for the various high power piezoelectric applications. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The regulation of cell proliferation in the external granular layer (EGL) of the developing cerebellum is important for its normal patterning. An important signal that regulates EGL cell proliferation is Sonic hedgehog (Shh). Shh is secreted by the Purkinje cells (PC) and has a mitogenic effect on the granule cell precursors of the EGL. Deregulation of Shh signaling has been associated with abnormal development, and been implicated in medulloblastomas, which are tumors that arise from the cerebellum. Given the importance of the Shh pathway in cerebellum development and disease, there has been no systematic study of its expression pattern during human cerebellum development. In this study, we describe the expression pattern of Shh, its receptor patched, smoothened, and its effectors that belong to the Gli family of transcription factors, during normal human cerebellum development from 10 weeks of gestational age, and in medulloblastomas that represents a case of abnormal cell proliferation in the cerebellum. This expression pattern is compared to equivalent stages in the normal development of cerebellum in mouse, as well as in tumors. Important differences between human and mouse that reflect differences in the normal developmental program between the 2 species are observed. First, in humans there appears to be a stage of Shh signaling within the EGL, when the PC are not yet the source of Shh. Second, unlike in the postnatal mouse cerebellum, expression of Shh in the PC in the postnatal human cerebellum is downregulated. Finally, medulloblastomas in the human but not in patched heterozygote mouse express Shh. These results highlight cross-species differences in the regulation of the Shh signaling pathway.

A Radio Frequency (RF) based digital data transmission scheme with 8 channel encoder/decoder ICs is proposed for surface electrode switching of a 16-electrode wireless Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) system. A RF based wireless digital data transmission module (WDDTM) is developed and the electrode switching of a EIT system is studied by analyzing the boundary data collected and the resistivity images of practical phantoms. An analog multiplexers based electrode switching module (ESM) is developed with analog multiplexers and switched with parallel digital data transmitted by a wireless transmitter/receiver (T-x/R-x) module working with radio frequency technology. Parallel digital bits are generated using NI USB 6251 card working in LabVIEW platform and sent to transmission module to transmit the digital data to the receiver end. The transmitter/receiver module developed is properly interfaced with the personal computer (PC) and practical phantoms through the ESM and USB based DAQ system respectively. It is observed that the digital bits required for multiplexer operation are sequentially generated by the digital output (D/O) ports of the DAQ card. Parallel to serial and serial to parallel conversion of digital data are suitably done by encoder and decoder ICs. Wireless digital data transmission module successfully transmitted and received the parallel data required for switching the current and voltage electrodes wirelessly. 1 mA, 50 kHz sinusoidal constant current is injected at the phantom boundary using common ground current injection protocol and the boundary potentials developed at the voltage electrodes are measured. Resistivity images of the practical phantoms are reconstructed from boundary data using EIDORS. Boundary data and the resistivity images reconstructed from the surface potentials are studied to assess the wireless digital data transmission system. Boundary data profiles of the practical phantom with different configurations show that the multiplexers are operating in the required sequence for common ground current injection protocol. The voltage peaks obtained at the proper positions in the boundary data profiles proved the sequential operation of multiplexers and successful wireless transmission of digital bits. Reconstructed images and their image parameters proved that the boundary data are successfully acquired by the DAQ system which in turn again indicates a sequential and proper operation of multiplexers as well as the successful wireless transmission of digital bits. Hence the developed RF based wireless digital data transmission module (WDDTM) is found suitable for transmitting digital bits required for electrode switching in wireless EIT data acquisition system. Maternal malnutrition affects every aspect of fetal development. The present study asked the question whether a low-protein diet of the mother could result in motor deficits in the offspring. Further, to examine whether cerebellar pathology was correlated with motor deficits, several parameters of the postnatal development of the cerebellum were assayed. This is especially important because the development of the cerebellum is unique in that the time scale of development is protracted compared with that of the cortex or hippocampus. The most important result of the study is that animals born to protein-deficient mothers showed significant delays in motor development as assessed by rotarod and gait analysis. These animals also showed reduced cell proliferation and reduced thickness in the external granular layer. There was a reduction in the number of calbindin-positive Purkinje cells (PC) and granular cells in the internal granular layer. However, glial fibrillary acidic protein-positive population including Bergmann glia remained unaffected. We therefore conclude that the development of the granular cell layer and the PC is specifically prone to the effects of protein malnutrition potentially due to their protracted developmental period from approximately embryonic day 11 to 13 until about the third postnatal week.

A new class of macrobicyclic dinickel(II) complexes Ni2L1,2 B](ClO4)(4) (1-6), where L-1,L-2 are polyaza macrobicyclic binucleating ligands, and B is a N,N-donor heterocyclic base (viz. 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)) are synthesized and characterized. The redox, catalytic, DNA binding and DNA cleavage properties were studied. They exhibit two irreversible waves in the cathodic region around E-pc = -0.95 V and E-pa = -0.85 V vs. Ag/Ag+ in CH3CN-0.1 M TBAP, respectively. The first order rate constants for the hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenylphosphate to 4-nitrophenolate by the dinickel(II) complexes 1-6 are in the range from 3.36 x 10(-5) to 10.83 x 10(-5) Ms-1. The complexes 3 and 6 show good binding propensity to calf thymus DNA giving binding constant values (K-b) in the range from 3.08 x 10(5) to 5.37 x 10(5) M-1. The binding site sizes and viscosity data suggest the DNA intercalative and/or groove binding nature of the complexes. The complexes display significant hydrolytic cleavage of supercoiled pBR322DNA at pH 7.2 and 37 degrees C. The hydrolytic cleavage of DNA by the complexes is supported by the evidence from free radical quenching and T4 ligase ligation. The pseudo Michaelis-Menten kinetic parameters k(cat) = 5.44 x 10(-2) h(-1) and K-M = 6.23 x 10(-3) M for complex 3 were obtained. Complex 3 also shows an enormous enhancement of the cleavage rate, of 1.5 x 10(6), in comparison to the uncatalysed hydrolysis rate (k = 3.6 x 10(-8) h(-1)) of ds-DNA.
