The tie-lines delineating equilibria between CoF2-NiF2 and Co-Ni solid solutions in the ternary Co-Ni-F system at 1373 K have been determined by electron microprobe and EDAX point count analysis of the equilibrated phases. Activities in the fluoride solid solution have been derived from the knowledge of activitycomposition relation in the metallic solid solution and tie-line data, using a modified form of the Gibbs-Duhem integration. The fluorine potentials corresponding to the tie-line compositions have been calculated. The excess Gibbs' energy of mixing for the fluoride solid solution derived from the present data can be represented by the expression

Electrodeposition produced features with a dendritic morphology and features with a branched wire like morphology made up of about 20 nm sized particles. Both the features contained Ag and Ni atoms in a solid solution arrangement. However, the feature made up of nanoparticles contained a greater concentration of Ni as compared to the Ni content in the dendritic feature. The greater Ni content in the Ag-Ni solid solution for the features with nanoparticles when compared to the dendritic morphology features strongly indicated the effect of curvature in increasing the extent of miscibility between bulk immiscible atoms. An equimolar mixture of Ni(NO(3))(2)center dot 6H(2)O and pyridine-2-aldehyde with two equivalents of NaN(3) in methanol in the presence of NaOMe resulted in the formation of light green precipitate which upon crystallization from dimethylformamide (DMF) yielded light green single crystals [{Ni(2)Na(2)(pic)(4)(N(3))(2)(H(2)O)(2)(MeOH)}center dot MeOH center dot 3H(2)O](n) (1) and [{Ni(2)Na(2)(pic)(4)(N(3))(2)(H(2)O)(4)}center dot 2DMF center dot H(2)O](n) (2) (pic = pyridine-2-carboxylate) at room temperature and high temperature (100 degrees C), respectively. Variable temperature magnetic studies revealed the existence of overall ferromagnetic behaviour with J approximate to + 10 cm(-1) and D approximate to -2 to -7 cm(-1) for 1 and 2, respectively. Negative D values as well as variation of D upon slight distortion of structure by varying reaction temperature were observed. The X-band Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectra of both 2 and 3 were recorded below 50 K. The structural distortion was also implicated from the EPR spectra. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on both complexes were performed in two different ways to corroborate the magnetic results. Considering only Ni(2)(II) dimeric unit, results were J = + 20.65 cm(-1) and D = -3.16 cm(-1) for 1, and J = +24.56 cm(-1) and D = -4.67 cm(-1) for 2. However, considering Ni(2)(II)Na(2)(I) cubane as magnetic core the results were J = +16.35 cm(-1) (1), +19.54 cm(-1) (2); D = -3.05 cm(-1) (1), -4.25 cm(-1) (2).

New complexes, [Ni(HL)(PPh3)]Cl (1), [Pd(L)(PPh3)](2), and [Pd(L)(AsPh3)](3), were synthesized from the reactions of 4-chloro-5-methyl-salicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone [H2L] with [NiCl2(PPh3)(2)], [PdCl2(PPh3)(2)] and [PdCl2(AsPh3)(2)]. They were characterized by IR, electronic, H-1-NMR spectral data. Further, the structures of the complexes have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. While the thiosemicarbazone coordinated as binegative tridentate (ONS) in complexes 2 and 3, it is coordinated as mono negative tridentate (ONS) in 1. The interactions of the new complexes with calf thymus DNA was examined by absorption and emission spectra, and viscosity measurements. Moreover, the antioxidant properties of the new complexes have also been tested against DPPH radical in which complex 1 exhibited better activity than that of the other two complexes 2 and 3. The in vitro cytotoxicity of complexes 1-3 against A549 and HepG2 cell lines was assayed, and the new complexes exhibited higher cytotoxic activity with lower IC50 values indicating their efficiency in killing the cancer cells even at very low concentrations.

The objective of this paper is to propose a numerically integrated modified virtual crack closure integral (NI-MVCCI) technique for fracture analysis of cracked plate panels. NI-MVCCI technique is generalized one and the expressions for computing the strain energy release rate (SERR) are independent of the finite element employed. NI-MVCCI technique has been demonstrated for 4-noded, 8-noded (regular and quarter-point) and 9-noded isoparametric finite elements. Numerical studies on fracture analysis of 2-D crack (mode-I and mode-II) problems have been conducted employing these elements. SERR and stress intensity factors (SIF) have been computed for these problems and found to be in good agreement with the respective analytical solutions available in the literature. The appropriate Gauss numerical integration order to be employed for each of these elements for accurate computation of SERR and SIF has been recommended based on the studies.

This investigation deals with the evolution of grain boundary microstructure and crystallographic texture during hot rolling of a Ni-rich NiTi alloy. Electron backscattered diffraction studies revealed the occurrence of several coincidence site lattice (CSL) boundaries. The origin of these boundaries has been identified. The crystallographic texture of the deformed sample consists mainly of (1 1 1)parallel to normal direction fiber. The texture components on the fiber exhibit some correlation with the type of CSL boundary. (C) 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Electroless Ni-Cu-P-ZRO(2) composite coating was successfully obtained on low carbon steel matrix by electroless plating technique. Coatings with different compositions were obtained by varying copper as ternary metal and nano sized zirconium oxide particles so as to obtain elevated corrosion resistant Ni-P coating. Microstructure, crystal structure and composition of deposits were analyzed by SEM, EDX and XRD techniques. The corrosion behavior of the deposits was studied by anodic polarization, Tafel plots and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3.5% sodium chloride solution. The ZRO(2) incorporated Ni-P coating showed higher corrosion resistance than plain Ni-P. The introduction of copper metal into Ni-P-ZRO(2) enhanced the protection ability against corrosion. The influence of copper metal and nanoparticles on microhardness of coatings was evaluated. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The present study provides an electrodeposition based synthesis method for producing solid solution structured Ag-Ni nanoparticles. It was also observed that the room temperature stable solid solution configuration for the electrodeposited Ag-Ni nanoparticle was a kinetically frozen atomic arrangement and not a thermodynamically stable structure as upon annealing of the Ag-Ni nanoparticles in the ambient atmosphere the solid solution structure decomposed producing phases that were oxides of Ag and Ni. Thin films of Ni-49 at.% Ti were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering on silicon substrates at 300 degrees C. The as-deposited amorphous films were annealed at a vacuum of 10(-6) mbar at various temperatures between 300 and 650 degrees C to study the effect of annealing on microstructure and mechanical properties. The as-deposited films showed partial crystallization on annealing at 500 degrees C. At 500 degrees C, a distinct oxidation layer, rich in titanium but depleted in Ni, was seen on the film surface. A gradual increase in thickness and number of layers of various oxide stoichiometries as well as growth of triangular shaped reaction zones were seen with increase in annealing temperature up to 650 degrees C. Nanoindentation studies showed that the film hardness values increase with increase in annealing temperature up to 600 degrees C and subsequently decrease at 650 degrees C. The results were explained on the basis of the change in microstructure as a result of oxidation on annealing.

The effect of Pt on the growth kinetics of the gamma'-Ni(Pt)](3)Al ordered intermetallic phase and the gamma- Ni(Pt, Al) solid solution diffusion rates of the species, hardness and elastic modulus was examined by employing the diffusion couple experimental technique. Experiments were conducted by using the beta-Ni(Pt)Al phase and Ni(Pt) alloy couples, each of which had a fixed amount of Pt (5, 10 and 15 at. %) in both the end members so that the Pt content is more or less constant throughout the interdiffusion zone. The results suggest that the growth kinetics of both phases and the average effective interdiffusion coefficients of Ni and Al increase with the increase in Pt content. Nanoindentation studies across the compositional gradients show that the mechanical properties of the intermetallic phase in the superalloy are relatively insensitive to the presence of Pt but are more sensitive to the Ni/Al ratio. In contrast, the marked variation in the hardness of the gamma phase were noted, increasing markedly with Al concentration in a given couple and also increasing with increasing Pt content. Possible causes for the observed variations are discussed.

Metal-ion- (Ag, Co, Ni and Pd) doped titania nanocatalysts were successfully deposited on glass slides by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique using a poly(styrene sulfonate sodium salt) (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) polyelectrolyte system. Solid diffuse reflectance (SDR) studies showed a linear increase in absorbance at 416 nm with increase in the number of m-TiO2 thin films. The LbL assembled thin films were tested for their photocatalytic activity through the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible-light illumination. From the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the thin films had a porous morphology and the atomic force microscope (AFM) studies showed ``rough'' surfaces. The porous and rough surface morphology resulted in high surface areas hence the high photocatalytic degradation (up to 97% over a 6.5 h irradiation period) using visible-light observed. Increasing the number of multilayers deposited on the glass slides resulted in increased film thickness and an increased rate of photodegradation due to increase in the availability of more nanocatalysts (more sites for photodegradation). The LbL assembled thin films had strong adhesion properties which made them highly stable thus displaying the same efficiencies after five (5) reusability cycles.

The ternary alloy Ni-W-P and its WS2 nanocomposite coatings were successfully obtained on low-carbon steel using the electroless plating technique. The sodium tungstate (Na2WO4) concentration in the bath was varied to obtain Ni-W-P deposits containing various Ni and P contents. WS2 composite was obtained with a suitable concentration of Na2WO4 in Ni-P coating. These deposits were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) studies. The corrosion behavior was investigated by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies in 3.5 wt % NaCl solutions, and the corrosion rates of the coatings for Ni-P, Ni-W-P, and Ni-W-P-WS2 were found to be 2.571 x 10(-5), 8.219 x 10(-7), and 7.986 x 10(-7) g/h, respectively. An increase in the codeposition of alloying metal tungsten (W) enhanced the corrosion resistance and microhardness and changed the structure and morphology of the deposits. Incorporation of WS2 nanoparticles to Ni-W-P alloy coating reduced the coefficient of friction from 0.16 to 0.11 and also helped in improving the corrosion resistance of the coating further.

Nb is one of the common refractory elements added in Ni, Co and Fe based superalloys. This lead to the formation of brittle topological close packed (tcp) mu phase, which is deleterious to the structure. It mainly grows by interdiffusion and in the present article, the interdiffusion process in different Nb-X (X=Ni, Co, Fe) systems is discussed. The activation energy for interdiffusion is lower in the Co-Nb system (173 kJ/mol) than Fe-Nb system (233 kJ/mol), which is again lower than the value found in the Ni-Nb system (319.7 kJ/mol). The mole fraction of Nb in this phase is less than Fe or Co at stoichiometric compositions in the Nb-Fe (that is Fe7Nb6) and Nb-Co (that is Co7Nb6) systems. On the other hand, the mole fraction of Nb is higher than Ni in the same phase (Ni6Nb2) in Ni-Nb system. However, in all the phases, Nb has lower diffusion rate. Possible diffusion mechanism in this phase is discussed with respect to the crystal structure.

A novel method is proposed for fracture toughness determination of graded microstructurally complex (Pt,Ni)Al bond coats using edge-notched doubly clamped beams subjected to bending. Micron-scale beams are machined using the focused ion beam and loaded in bending under a nanoindenter. Failure loads gathered from the pop-ins in the load-displacement curves combined with XFEM analysis are used to calculate K-c at individual zones, free from substrate effects. The testing technique and sources of errors in measurement are described and possible micromechanisms of fracture in such heterogeneous coatings discussed.

Preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX) was carried out over Ni supported on CeO2 prepared by the co-precipitation method. The influence of metal loadings (2.5, 5 and 10 wt.% Ni) and the reaction conditions such as reaction temperature and feed composition on CO oxidation and oxidation selectivity were evaluated by using dry reformate gas. No other reactions like CO or CO2 methanation, coking, reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction is observed in the temperature range of 100-200 A degrees C on these catalysts. Hydrogen oxidation dominates over CO oxidation above the temperature of 200 A degrees C. An increase in oxygen leads to an increase in CO conversion but a simultaneous decrease in the O-2 selectivity. It has been noticed that 5 and 10 % Ni/CeO2 show better catalytic activity towards CO-PROX reaction. These catalysts were characterized by S-BET, XRD, TEM, XPS and H-2-TPR.
