Synthesis of calcium hydroxyapatite Ca-10(PO4)(6)(OH)(2) ceramic powders by a solid state reaction between commercially available tricalcium phosphate and calcium hydroxide powders has been attempted in the range 700-1000 degrees C. Reaction of tricalcium phosphate and calcium hydroxide in 3:2 molar ratio at 1000 degrees C leads to the formation of pure calcium hydroxyapatite phase. The sample has been characterised by XRD and IR spectral studies. The compacted powder is sintered to 93% of theoretical density when fired in air at 1300 degrees C for 2 hours.

Nebulized spray pyrolysis of metal-organic precursors in methanol solution has been employed to prepare powders of TiO2, ZrO2 and PbZr0.5Ti0.5O3 (PZT). This process ensures complete decomposition of the precursors at relatively low temperatures. The particles have been examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy as well as X-ray diffraction. As prepared, the particles are hollow agglomerates of diameter 0.1-1.6 mu m, but after heating to higher temperatures the ultimate size of the particles comprising the agglomerates are considerably smaller (0.1 mu m or less in diameter) and crystalline.

A simple, novel, and fast method of preparation of metal nitride powders (GaN, TiN, and VN) using microwave-assisted carbothermal reduction and nitridation has been demonstrated. The procedure uses the respective oxides and amorphous carbon powder as the starting materials. Ammonia gas is found to be more effective in nitridation than high-purity N-2 gas. Complete nitridation is achieved by the use of a slight excess of amorphous carbon. Metals themselves are not found to be effectively nitrided. The products were characterized using XRD, TEM, and SAED and found to possess good crystallinity and phase purity. The method can be of general applicability for the preparation of metal nitrides.

Disordered nanocrystalline Ni3Fe alloy was prepared by mechanical alloying of elemental powders. X-ray diffractograms show the formation of Ni3Fe single phase. The chemical composition and morphology of the powder have been obtained by using EDAX and SEM analysis respectively. While the saturation magnetisation decreases with milling time, the coercivity increases. The width of the hyperfine field distributions obtained from Mossbauer studies shows that the alloy is highly disordered Atomic ordering is found to take place at a faster rate compared to that in the bulk alloy. Fine particles of willemite, alpha -Zn2SiO4, were prepared by both solution combustion and sol-gel methods. Both processes yield single-phase, large-surface area (26- and 78-m(2)/g), sinteractive willemite powders. Thermal evolution of crystalline phases was studied using X-ray powder diffraction patterns. The combustion method favors low-temperature formation of willemite compared to the sol-gel method. The powders, when uniaxially pressed and sintered at 1300 degreesC, achieved 78-80% theoretical density. The microstructures of the sintered body show the presence of equiaxed 0.5- to 4-mum grains. Blue pigments of willemite doped with Co2+ and Ni2+ were also prepared by the combustion process.

Nanocrystalline ZnO:Mn (0.1 mol%) phosphors have been successfully prepared by self propagating, gas producing solution combustion method. The powder X-ray diffraction of as-formed ZnO:Mn sample shows, hexagonal wurtzite phase with particle size of similar to 40 nm. For Mn doped ZnO, the lattice parameters and volume of unit cell (a=3.23065 angstrom, c=5.27563 angstrom and V=47.684 (angstrom)(3)) are found to be greater than that of undoped ZnO (a=3.19993 angstrom, c=5.22546 angstrom and V=46.336 (angstrom)(3)). The SEM micrographs reveal that besides the spherical crystals, the powders also contained several voids and pores. The TEM photograph also shows the particles are approximately spherical in nature. The FTIR spectrum shows two peaks at similar to 3428 and 1598 cm(-1) which are attributed to O-H stretching and H-O-H bending vibration. The PL spectra of ZnO:Mn indicate a strong green emission peak at 526 nm and a weak red emission at 636 nm corresponding to T-4(1) -> (6)A(1) transition of Mn2+ ions. The EPR spectrum exhibits fine structure transition which will be split into six hyperfine components due to Mn-55 hyperfine coupling giving rise to all 30 allowed transitions. From EPR spectra the spin-Hamiltonian parameters have been evaluated and discussed. The magnitude of the hyperfine splitting (A) constant indicates that there exists a moderately covalent bonding between the Mn2+ ions and the surrounding ligands. The number of spins participating in resonance (N), its paramagnetic susceptibility (chi) have been evaluated. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In situ formations of Al2O3 + ZrO2 + SiCW ternary composite powders have been obtained by carbothermal reduction of a mixture of Sillimanite. Kaolin and Zircon using two different carbon sources. Products formed were mixtures of alumina and zirconia along with silicon carbide in the form of whiskers. The effects of composition of the reactants, the role of fineness of the starting precursors and the nature of the carbon Source on the final product powder obtained are presented. XRD and SEM analyses indicate complete reaction of the precursors to yield Al2O3 + ZrO2 + SiCW as product powders, with the SiC having whisker morphology. It is also seen that zirconia could be stabilised to some extent in the tetragonal form without any stabilising agent by tailoring the starting materials and their composition. Submicron size Co, Ni and Co-Ni alloy powders have been synthesized by the polyol method using the corresponding metal malonates and Pd powder by reduction of PdOx in methanol. The kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction ( HER) in 6 M KOH electrolyte have been studied on electrodes made from the pressed powders. The d.c. polarization measurements have resulted in a value close to 120 mV decade(-1) for the Tafel slope, suggesting that the HER follows the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism. The values of exchange current density (i(o)) are in the range 1-10 mA cm(-2) for electrodes fabricated in the study. The a.c. impedance spectra measured at several potentials in the HER region showed a single semicircle in the Nyquist plots. Exchange current density (i(o)) and energy transfer coefficient (alpha) have been calculated by employing a nonlinear least square-fitting program.

The influence of powder processing and sintering temperature on densification, microstructure and mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite (HAp) ceramics was studied. The as-dried, calcined and processed HAp powders were uniaxially compacted and sintered at various temperatures (1000-1400 degreesC) for 3 h. The as-dried and processed powders, attained 97% of theoretical density (TD) at 1100 degreesC) at higher sintering temperatures, the density of the as-dried powder compact was found to decrease. A uniform microstructure with fine grain size (2.3 pm) was observed for material obtained from processed powder, whereas exaggerated grain growth with closed pores were observed in as-dried and unprocessed powder compacts. The Vickers' hardness, fracture toughness and flexural strength of HAp were determined and a maximum value of 6.3 GPa and 0.88 MPam(1/2) and 60.3 MPa, respectively were obtained for processed compact. The processing of HAp has improved its densification, microstructure homogeneity and mechanical properties. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd and Techna S.r.l. All rights reserved.

A systematic study on the variation of Mössbauer hyperfine parameters with grain size in nanocrystalline zinc ferrite is lacking. In the present study, nanocrystalline ZnFe2O4 ferrites with different grain sizes were prepared by ball-milling technique and characterised by X-ray, EDAX, magnetisation and Mössbauer studies. The grain size decreases with increasing milling time and lattice parameter is found to be slightly higher than the bulk value. Magnetisation at room temperature (RT) and at 77 K could not be saturated with a magnetic field of 7 kOe and the observed magnetisation at these temperatures can be explained on the basis of deviation of cation distribution from normal spinel structure. The Mössbauer spectra were recorded at different temperatures between RT and 16 K. The values of quadrupole splitting at RT are higher for the milled samples indicating the disordering of ZnFe2O4 on milling. The strength of the magnetic hyperfine interactions increases with grain size reduction and this can be explained on the basis of the distribution of Fe3+ ions at both tetrahedral and octahedral sites.

Amorphous aluminosilicate gel powders have been subjected to carbothermal reduction and nitridation reaction at high temperature (1673 K). The influence of Al2O3 content in the gel powder on the nature and structure of the product phases has been examined. Between 5% and 9% Al2O3 in the gel powder, it is found that only β-SiAION is formed as the product of CTR/N reaction.

The occurrence of segregation and its influence on microstructural and phase evolution have been studied in MgO–MgAl2O4 powders synthesized by thermal decomposition of aqueous nitrate precursors. When the nitrate solutions of Mg and Al were spray-pyrolyzed on a substrate held at 673 or 573 K, homogeneous mixed oxides were produced. Spraying and drying the nitrate solutions at 473 K resulted in the formation of compositionally inhomogeneous, segregated oxide mixtures. It is suggested that segregation in the dried powders was caused by the difference in solubility of the individual nitrate salts in water which caused Mg-rich and Al-rich salts to precipitate during dehydration of the solutions. The occurrence of segregation in the powders sprayed at 473 K and not 573 or 673 K is ascribed to the sluggish rate at which the early stages of decomposition occurred during which the cations segregated. The phase evolution in segregated and segregation-free MgO–MgAl2O4 powders has been compared. The distinguishing feature of the segregated powders was the appearance of stoichiometric periclase grain dimensions in excess of 0.3 μm at temperatures as low as 973 K. By comparison, the segregation-free powders displayed broad diffraction peaks corresponding to fine-grained and nonstoichiometric periclase. The grain size was in the range 5–30 nm at temperatures up to 1173 K. The key to obtaining fine-grained periclase was the ability to synthesize (Mg Al)O solid solutions with the rock salt structure. In the temperature range 973–1173 K, spinel grain size varied from 5 to 40 nm irrespective of its composition and did not appear to be influenced by segregation.

Composite coatings containing quasicrystalline (QC) phases in Al-Cu-Fe alloys were prepared by laser cladding using a mixture of the elemental powders. Two substrates, namely pure aluminum and an Al-Si alloy were used. The clad layers were remelted at different scanning velocities to alter the growth conditions of different phases. The process parameters were optimized to produce quasicrystalline phases. The evolution of the microstructure in the coating layer was characterized by detailed microstructural investigation. The results indicate presence of quasicrystals in the aluminum substrate. However, only approximant phase could be observed in the substrate of Al-Si alloys. It is shown that there is a significant transport of Si atoms from the substrate to the clad layer during the cladding and remelting process. The hardness profiles of coatings on aluminum substrate indicate a very high hardness. The coating on Al-Si alloy, on the other hand, is ductile and soft. The fracture toughness of the hard coating on aluminum was obtained by nano-indentation technique. The K1C value was found to be 1.33 MPa m1/2 which is typical of brittle materials.

Nanocrystalline tin oxide powder was prepared using a solution precipitation technique after adding the surfactant sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT). Powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface area (BET) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The gas sensitivity for surfactant added powders increased for liquid petroleum gas (LPG) as well as compressed natural gas (CNG), due to the decreased particle size and the increased surface area. The LPG gas sensitivity increased several times using phosphorus treated surfactant AOT.

Perovskite oxides LaMO3 (M = Cr, Co, Ni), have been successfully prepared using microwaves of 2.45 GHz. Microwave preparation is rapid, clean and energy efficient. Preparation of LaCrO3, LaCoO3 and LaNiO3 has been achieved in 3 min, 5 min and 10 min respectively. Direct reaction between component oxides is used for the preparation of LaCrO3 and LaCoO3, whereas nitrates are used as starting materials for LaNiO3 preparation. Products have been characterized using XRD, IR spectroscopy and SEM. Their dc electrical conductivity has also been studied and their fracture behaviour has been examined. All three microwave prepared oxide powders are of submicron size. These perovskite oxides have been sintered to very high densities using microwaves. Possible mechanisms of the microwave-material interaction both during preparation and during sintering have been discussed.
