Crack loading and crack extension in pseudoelastic binary NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) miniature compact tension (CT) specimens with 50.7 at.% Ni (austenitic, pseudoelastic) was investigated using infrared (IR) thermography during in situ loading and unloading. IR thermographic measurements allow for the observation of heat effects associated with the stress-induced transformation of martensite from B2 to BIT during loading and the reverse transformation during unloading. The results are compared with optical images and discussed in terms of the crack growth mechanisms in pseudoelastic NiTi SMAs. Direct experimental evidence is presented which shows that crack growth occurs into a stress-induced martensitic microstructure, which immediately retransforms to austenite in the wake of the crack.

The velocity profile in turbulent pipe flow is usually divided into two regions, a wall or inner region and a core or outer region. For the inner region, the viscosity and wall shear stress are the important parameters governing the velocity distribution whereas for the outer region, the wall reduces the velocity below the maximum velocity independent of viscosity. In the present work, a velocity model is proposed for turbulent flow in the wall region of a pipe covering the entire transition from smooth to rough flows. Coupling this model for the wall region with the power law velocity model for the core region, an equation for the friction factor is obtained. The model constants are evaluated by using Nikuradse's experiments in the fully smooth and rough turbulent flows. The model shows good agreement with the friction factor and the velocity profiles obtained by Nikuradse for the transition region of turbulent flow.

In the present paper the effects of temperature and high strain rate loading on the formation of various surface patterns in Ni-Al nano-layers are discussed. Effects of boundary conditions on the B2 -> BCT phase transformation in the nano-layer are also discussed. This study is aimed at developing several interesting patterned surface structures in Ni-Al nanolayer by controlling the phase transformation temperature and mechanical loading.

In this work, we have tried to emphasize the connection between mycobacterial growth and regulation of gene expression. Utilization of multiple carbon sources and diauxic growth helps bacteria to regulate gene expression at an optimum level so that the inhospitable conditions encountered during nutrient depletion can be circumvented. These aspects will be discussed with respect to mycobacterial growth in subsequent sections. Identification and characterization of genes induced under such conditions is helpful to understand the physiology of the bacterium. Although it is necessary to compare the total expression profile of proteins as they transit from vegetative growth to stationary phase, at times a lot of insights can be deciphered from the expression pattern of one or two proteins. We have compared the protein expression and sigma factor selectivity of two such proteins in M. smegmatis to understand the differential regulation of genes playing diverse function in the same species. Some newer insights on the structure and function of one of the Dps proteins are also explained.

The concept of domain integral used extensively for J integral has been applied in this work for the formulation of J(2) integral for linear elastic bimaterial body containing a crack at the interface and subjected to thermal loading. It is shown that, in the presence of thermal stresses, the J(k) domain integral over a closed path, which does not enclose singularities, is a function of temperature and body force. A method is proposed to compute the stress intensity factors for bimaterial interface crack subjected to thermal loading by combining this domain integral with the J(k) integral. The proposed method is validated by solving standard problems with known solutions.

A d-dimensional box is a Cartesian product of d closed intervals on the real line. The boxicity of a graph is the minimum dimension d such that it is representable as the intersection graph of d-dimensional boxes. We give a short constructive proof that every graph with maximum degree D has boxicity at most 2D2. We also conjecture that the best upper bound is linear in D.

Powder x-ray diffraction study of Mn2NiGa ferromagnetic shape memory alloy shows the existence of a 7M monoclinic modulated structure at room temperature (RT). The structure of Mn2NiGa is found to be highly dependent on residual stress. For higher stress, the structure is tetragonal at RT, and for intermediate stress it is 7M monoclinic. However, only when the stress is considerably relaxed, the structure is cubic, as is expected at RT since the martensitic transition temperature is 230 K.

The insulation in a dc cable is subjected to both thermal and electric stress at the same time. While the electric stress is generic to the cable, the temperature rise in the insulation is, by and large, due to the Ohmic losses in the conductor. The consequence of this synergic effect is to reduce the maximum operating voltage and causes a premature failure of the cable. The authors examine this subject in some detail and propose a comprehensive theoretical formulation relating the maximum thermal voltage (MTV) to the physical and geometrical parameters of the insulation. The heat flow patterns and boundary conditions considered by the authors here and those found in earlier literature are provided. The MTV of a dc cable is shown to be a function of the load current apart from the resistance of the insulation. The results obtained using the expressions, developed by the authors, are compared with relevant results published in the literature and found to be in close conformity.

The hot deformation behaviour of Mg–3Al alloy has been studied using the processing-map technique. Compression tests were conducted in the temperature range 250–550 °C and strain rate range 3 × 10−4 to 102 s−1 and the flow stress data obtained from the tests were used to develop the processing map. The various domains in the map corresponding to different dissipative characteristics have been identified as follows: (i) grain boundary sliding (GBS) domain accommodated by slip controlled by grain boundary diffusion at slow strain-rates (<10−3 s−1) in the temperature range from 350 to 450 °C, (ii) two different dynamic recrystallization (DRX) domains with a peak efficiency of 42% at 550 °C/10−1 s−1 and 425 °C/102 s−1 governed by stress-assisted cross-slip and thermally activated climb as the respective rate controlling mechanisms and (iii) dynamic recovery (DRV) domain below 300 °C in the intermediate strain rate range from 3 × 10−2 to 3 × 10−1 s−1. The regimes of flow instability have also been delineated in the processing map using an instability criterion. Adiabatic shear banding at higher strain rates (>101 s−1) and solute drag by substitutional Al atoms at intermediate strain rates (3 × 10−2 to 3 × 10−1 s−1) in the temperature range (350–450 °C) are responsible for flow instability. The relevance of these mechanisms with reference to hot working practice of the material has been indicated. The processing maps of Mg–3Al alloy and as-cast Mg have been compared qualitatively to elucidate the effect of alloying with aluminum on the deformation behaviour of magnesium.

Objectives: Glutathionyl haemoglobin (GS-Hb) belonging to the class of glutathionylated proteins has been investigated as a possible marker of oxidative stress in different chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to examine whether glutathionyl haemoglobin can serve as an oxidative stress marker in non-diabetic chronic renal failure patients on different renal replacement therapies (RRT) through its quantitation, and characterization of the specific binding site of glutathione in haemoglobin molecule by mass spectrometric analysis. Design and methods: The study group consisted of non-diabetic chronic renal failure patients on renal replacement therapy (RRT): hemodialysis (HD), continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and renal allograft transplant (Txp) patients. Haemoglobin samples of these subjects were analyzed by liquid chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry for GS-Hb quantitation. Characterization of GS-Hb was done by tandem mass spectrometry. Levels of erythrocyte glutathione (GSH) and lipid peroxidation (as thiobarbituric acid reacting substances) were measured spectrophotometrically, while glycated baernoglobin (HbA1c) was measured by HPLC. Results: GS-Hb levels were markedly elevated in the dialysis group and marginally in the transplant group as compared to the controls. GS-Hb levels correlated positively with lipid peroxidation and negatively with the erythrocyte glutathione levels in RRT groups indicating enhanced oxidative stress. De novo sequencing of the chymotryptic fragment of GS-Hb established that glutathione is attached to Cys-93 of the beta globin chain. Mass spectrometric quantitation of total glycated haemoglobin showed good agreement with HbA1c estimation by conventional HPLC method. Conclusions: Glutathionyl haemoglobin can serve as a clinical marker of oxidative stress in chronic debilitating therapies like RRT. Mass spectrometry provides a reliable analytical tool for quantitation and residue level characterization of different post-translational modifications of haemoglobin. Nickel rich NiTi films were sputter deposited on p-doped Si left angle bracket1 0 0right-pointing angle bracket substrates maintained at 300 °C. The films were subsequently solution treated at 700 °C for 30 min followed by ageing at 400 and 500 °C for 5 h. The microstructure of the films was examined by TEM and these studies revealed that the NiTi films were mostly amorphous in the as-deposited condition. The subsequent solution treatment and ageing resulted in crystallization of the films with the film aged at 400 °C exhibiting nanocrystalline grains and three phases viz. B2 (austenite), R and Ni3Ti2 whereas the film aged at 500 °C shows micron sized grains and two phases viz. R and Ni3Ti2. Nanoindentation studies revealed that the nature of the load versus indentation depth response for the films aged at 400 and 500 °C was different. For the same load, the indenter penetrated to a much greater depth for the film aged at 400 °C as compared to the film aged at 500 °C. Also the ratio of the residual indentation depth (hf) to maximum indentation depth (hmax) is lower for the film aged at 400 °C as compared to the film aged at 500 °C. This was attributed to the occurrence of stress induced martensitic transformation of the B2 phase present in the film aged at 400 °C during indentation loading which results in a transformation strain in addition to the normal elastic and plastic strains and its subsequent recovery on unloading. The hardness and elastic modulus measured using the Oliver and Pharr analysis was also found to be lower for the film aged at 400 °C as compared to the film aged at 500 °C which was also primarily attributed to the same effect.

Assembly consisting of cast and wrought aluminum alloys has wide spread application in defense and aero space industries. For the efficacious use of the transition joints, the weld should have adequate strength and formability. In the present investigation, A356 and 6061 aluminum alloys were friction stir welded under tool rotational speed of 1000-1400 rpm and traversing speed of 80-240 mm/min, keeping other parameters same. The variable process window is responsible for the change in total heat input and cooling rate during welding. Structural characterization of the bonded assemblies exhibits recovery-recrystallization in the stirring zone and breaking of coarse eutectic network of Al-Si. Dispersion of fine Si rich particles, refinement of 6061 grain size, low residual stress level and high defect density within weld nugget contribute towards the improvement in bond strength. Lower will be the tool rotational and traversing speed, more dominant will be the above phenomena. Therefore, the joint fabricated using lowest tool traversing and rotational speed, exhibits substantial improvement in bond strength (similar to 98% of that of 6061 alloy), which is also maximum with respect to others. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a successful pathogen that overcomes numerous challenges presented by the immune system of the host. This bacterium usually establishes a chronic infection in the host where it may silently persist inside a granuloma until, a failure in host defenses, leads to manifestation of the disease. None of the conventional anti-tuberculosis drugs are able to target these persisting bacilli. Development of drugs against such persisting bacilli is a constant challenge since the physiology of these dormant bacteria is still not understood at the molecular level. Some evidence suggests that the in vivo environment encountered by the persisting bacteria is anoxic and nutritionally starved. Based on these assumptions, anaerobic and starved cultures are used as models to study the molecular basis of dormancy. This review outlines the problem of persistence of M. tuberculosis and the various in vitro models used to study mycobacterial latency. The basis of selecting the nutritional starvation model has been outlined here. Also, the choice of M. smegmatis as a model suitable for studying mycobacterial latency is discussed. Lastly, general issues related to oxidative stress and bacterial responses to it have been elaborated. We have also discussed general control of OxyR-mediated regulation and emphasized the processes which manifest in the absence of functional OxyR in the bacteria. Lastly, a new class of protein called Dps has been reviewed for its important role in protecting DNA under stress.

Guo and Nixon proposed a feature selection method based on maximizing I(x; Y),the multidimensional mutual information between feature vector x and class variable Y. Because computing I(x; Y) can be difficult in practice, Guo and Nixon proposed an approximation of I(x; Y) as the criterion for feature selection. We show that Guo and Nixon's criterion originates from approximating the joint probability distributions in I(x; Y) by second-order product distributions. We remark on the limitations of the approximation and discuss computationally attractive alternatives to compute I(x; Y).

The stress concentration that occurs when load is diffused from a constant stress member into thin sheet is an important problem in the design of light weight structures. By using solutions in biharmonic polar-trigonometric series, the stress concentration can be effectively isolated so that highly accurate information necessary for design can be obtained. A method of analysis yielding high accuracy with limited effort is presented for rectangular panels with transverse edges free or supported by inextensional end ribs. Numerical data are given for panels with length twice the width.
