We propose an effective elastography technique in which an acoustic radiation force is used for remote palpation to generate localized tissue displacements, which are directly correlated to localized variations of tissue stiffness and are measured using a light probe in the same direction of ultrasound propagation. The experimental geometry has provision to input light beam along the ultrasound propagation direction, and hence it can be prealigned to ensure proper interception of the focal region by the light beam. Tissue-mimicking phantoms with homogeneous and isotropic mechanical properties of normal and malignant breast tissue are considered for the study. Each phantom is insonified by a focusing ultrasound transducer (1 MHz). The focal volume of the transducer and the ultrasound radiation force in the region are estimated through solving acoustic wave propagation through medium assuming average acoustic properties. The forward elastography problem is solved for the region of insonification assuming the Lame's parameters and Poisson's ratio, under Dirichlet boundary conditions which gives a distribution of displacement vectors. The direction of displacement, though presented spatial variation, is predominantly towards the ultrasound propagation direction. Using Monte Carlo (MC) simulation we have traced the photons through the phantom and collected the photons arriving at the detector on the boundary of the object in the direction of ultrasound. The intensity correlations are then computed from detected photons. The intensity correlation function computed through MC simulation showed a modulation whose strength is found to be proportional to the amplitude of displacement and inversely related to the storage (elastic) modulus. It is observed that when the storage modulus in the focal region is increased the computed displacement magnitude, as indicated by the depth of modulation in the intensity autocorrelation, decreased and the trend is approximately exponential.

Summary form only given. The authors have developed a controllable HTSC (high-temperature superconductor) weak-link fabrication process for producing weak links from the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO), using PrBa2Cu3O7-x (PBCO) as a lattice-matched semiconducting barrier layer. The devices obtained show current-voltage characteristics similar to those observed for low-temperature superconductor/normal-metal/superconductor (SNS) devices. The authors found good scaling of the critical currents Ic with area, A, and scaling of the resistances Rj with 1/A; the typical values of the IcRj product of 3.5 mV are consistent with traditional SNS behavior. The authors observed Shapiro steps in response to 100-GHz millimeter-wave radiation and oscillation of the DC supercurrent in a transverse magnetic field, thus demonstrating that both the AC and DC Josephson effects occur in these devices.

We present observations of radio recombination lines (RRL) from the starburst galaxy Arp 220 at 8.1 GHz (H92 alpha) and 1.4 GHz (H167 alpha and H165 alpha) and at 84 GHz (H42 alpha), 96 GHz (H40 alpha) and 207 GHz (H31 alpha) using the Very Large Array and the IRAM 30 m telescope, respectively. RRLs were detected at all the frequencies except 1.4 GHz, where a sensitive upper limit was obtained. We also present continuum flux measurements at these frequencies as well as at 327 MHz made with the VLA. The continuum spectrum, which has a spectral index alpha similar to -0.6 (S-nu proportional to nu(alpha)) between 5 and 10 GHz, shows a break near 1.5 GHz, a prominent turnover below 500 MHz, and a flatter spectral index above 50 GHz. We show that a model with three components of ionized gas with different densities and area covering factors can consistently explain both RRL and continuum data. The total mass of ionized gas in the three components is 3.2 x 10(7) M., requiring 3 x 10(5) O5 stars with a total Lyman continuum production rate N-Lyc similar to 1.3 x 10(55) photons s(-1). The ratio of the expected to observed Br alpha and Br gamma fluxes implies a dust extinction A(V) similar to 45 mag. The derived Lyman continuum photon production rate implies a continuous star formation rate (SFR) averaged over the lifetime of OB stars of similar to 240 M yr(-1). The Lyman continuum photon Production rate of similar to 3% associated with the high-density H II regions implies a similar SFR at recent epochs (t < 10(5) yr). An alternative model of high-density gas, which cannot be excluded on the basis of the available data, predicts 10 times higher SFR at recent epochs. If confirmed, this model implies that star formation in Arp 220 consists of multiple starbursts of very high SFR (few times 10(3) M. yr(-1)) and short duration (similar to 10(5) yr). The similarity of IR excess, L-IR/L-Ly alpha similar to 24, in Arp 220 to values observed in starburst galaxies shows that most of the high luminosity of Arp 220 is due to the ongoing starburst rather than to a hidden active galactic nucleus (AGN). A comparison of the IR excesses in Arp 220, the Galaxy, and M33 indicates that the starburst in Arp 220 has an initial mass function that is similar to that in normal galaxies and has a duration longer than 107 yr. If there was no infall of gas during this period, then the star formation efficiency (SFE) in Arp 220 is similar to 50%. The high SFR and SFE in Arp 220 is consistent with their known dependences on mass and density of gas in star-forming regions of normal galaxies.

Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder caused by expansion of GAA repeats in the frataxin gene. We have carried out the first molecular analysis at the Friedreich's ataxia locus in the Indian population. Materials and methods - Three families clinically diagnosed for Friedreich's ataxia were analyzed for GAA expansion at the FRDA locus. The distribution of GAA repeats was also estimated in normal individuals of Indian origin. Results - All patients clinically diagnosed for Friedreich's ataxia were found to be homozygous for GAA repeat expansion. The GAA repeat in the normal population show a bimodal distribution with 94% of alleles ranging from 7-16 repeats. Conclusion - Indian patients with expansion at the FRDA locus showed typical clinical features of Friedreich's ataxia. The low frequency of large normal alleles (6%) could indicate that the prevalence of this disease in the Indian population is likely to be low.

A slip line field is proposed for symmetrical single‐cavity closed‐die forging by rough dies. A compatible velocity field is shown to exist. Experiments were conducted using lead workpiece and rough dies. Experimentally observed flow and load were used to validate the proposed slip line field. The slip line field was used to simulate the process in the computer with the objective of studying the influence of flash geometry on cavity filling.

Analytical expressions are found for the coupled wavenumbers in an infinite fluid-filled cylindrical shell using the asymptotic methods. These expressions are valid for any general circumferential order (n).The shallow shell theory (which is more accurate at higher frequencies)is used to model the cylinder. Initially, the in vacua shell is dealt with and asymptotic expressions are derived for the shell wavenumbers in the high-and the low-frequency regimes. Next, the fluid-filled shell is considered. Defining a relevant fluid-loading parameter p, we find solutions for the limiting cases of small and large p. Wherever relevant, a frequency scaling parameter along with some ingenuity is used to arrive at an elegant asymptotic expression. In all cases.Poisson's ratio v is used as an expansion variable. The asymptotic results are compared with numerical solutions of the dispersion equation and the dispersion relation obtained by using the more general Donnell-Mushtari shell theory (in vacuo and fluid-filled). A good match is obtained. Hence, the contribution of this work lies in the extension of the existing literature to include arbitrary circumferential orders(n). (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Novel molecular matrices have been derived from coumarin-4-acetic acids and beta-phenylethylamines using the Bischler-Napieralski protocol which has led to the synthesis of analogues of tetrahydropapaverine in which the dimethoxybenzene moiety has been replaced by substituted coumarins. One carbon homologation has led to cyclization at the C3 position of coumarin generating the protoberberine skeleton. Structures have been confirmed by diffraction studies. The results showed that compounds 6e, 6f, 7e and 7f were found to be very effective against DNA samples of Gram positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and fungus Aspergillus niger. Fluorescence and stopped-flow spectrophotometric studies on three plant lectins fromPsophocarpus tetragonolobus (winged bean),Glycine max (soybean) andArtocarpus integrifolia (jack fruit) have been studied usingN-dansylgalactosamine as a fluorescent ligand. The best monosaccharide for the winged bean agglutinin I (WBA I) and soybean (SBA) is Me-agrGalNAc and for jack fruit agglutinin (JFA) is Me-agrGal. Examination of the percentage enhancement and association constants (1.51×106, 6.56×106 and 4.17×105 M–1 for SBA, WBA I and JFA, respectively) suggests that the combining regions of the lectins SBA and WBA I are apolar whereas that of JFA is polar. Thermodynamic parameters obtained for the binding of several monosaccharides to these lectins are enthalpically favourable. The binding of monosaccharides to these lectins suggests that the-OH groups at C-1, C-2, C-4 and C-6 in thed-galactose configuration are important loci for interaction with these lectins. An important finding is that the JFA binds specifically to Galß1-3GaINAc with much higher affinity than the other disaccharides which are structurally and topographically similar. The results of stopped-flow spectrometry on the binding ofN-dansylgalactosamine to these lectins are consistent with a bimolecular single step mechanism. The association rate constants (2.4×105, 1.3×104, and 11.7×105 M–1 sec–1 for SBA, WBA I and JFA, respectively) obtained are several orders of magnitude slower than the ones expected for diffusion controlled reactions. The dissociation rate constants (0.2, 3.2×10–2, 83.3 sec–1 for SBA, WBA I and JFA, respectively) obtained for the dissociation ofN-dansylgalactosamine from its lectin complex are slowest for SBA and WBA I when compared with any other lectin-ligand dissociation process.

Antiferroelectricity of sol-gel grown pure and La modified PbZrO3 thin films, with a maximum extent of 6 mol%, has been characterized by temperature dependent P-E hysteresis loops within the applied electric field of 60 MV/m. It has been seen that on extent of La modification electric field induced phase transformation can be altered and at 40 degrees C its maximum value has been observed at +/- 38 MV/m on 6 mol% modifications whereas the minimum value is +/- 22 MV/m on 1 mol%. On La modification the variation of electric field induced phase transformations at 40 degrees C has been correlated with the temperature of ntiferroelectric phase condensation on cooling. The critical electric fields for saturated P-E hysteresis loops have been defined from field dependent maximum polarizations and their variations on La modification show a similar trend as found in their dielectric phase transition temperatures. The mechanism of thermal decomposition of tetramethylammonium nitrate has been investigated by thermogravimetry and mass spectrometry. The activation energy for the decomposition has been determined by isothermal decomposition technique using thermogravimetry and by monitoring mass spectrometrically the formation of trimethylamine. The activation energies determined in both the cases compare well, suggesting that the decomposition proceeds via dissociation of tetramethylammonium nitrate into trimethylamine and methylnitrate.
