Resumo:
We report the synthesis and structural characterization of 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.35PbTiO(3) (PMN-PT) nanotubes prepared by a novel sal-gel template method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) investigations demonstrated that the postannealed (650 degrees C for 1 h) PMN-PT nanotubes were polycrystalline with perovskite crystal structure. The field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) shows that as prepared PMN-PT nanotubes were hollow with diameter to be about 200 nm. High resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) analysis confirmed that the obtained PMN-PT nanotubes made up of nanoparticles (10-20 nm) which were randomly aligned in the nanotubes. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis confirmed the stoichiometric 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.35PbTiO(3). The possible formation mechanism of PMN-PT nanotubes was proposed at the end. In the absence of a reliable method for a priori prediction of structure and properties of inorganic solid materials, an experimental approach involving a systematic study of composition, structure and properties combined with chemical intuition based on previous experience is likely to be a viable alternative to the problem of rational design of inorganic materials. The approach is illustrated by taking perovskite lithium-ion conductors as an example.

Redox supercapacitors using polyaniline (PANI) coated. stainless-steel (SS) electrodes have been assembled and characterized. PANI has been deposited on SS substrate by a potentiodynamic method from an acidic electrolyte which contains aniline monomer. By employing stacks of electrodes, each with a geometrical area of 24 cm(2), in acidic perchlorate electrolyte, a capacitance value of about 450 F has been obtained over a long cycle-life. Characterization studies have been carried out by galvanostatic charge-discharge cycling of the capacitors singly, as well as in series and parallel configurations. Various electrical parameters have been evaluated. Use of the capacitors in parallel with a battery for pulse-power loads. and also working of a toy fan connected to the charged capacitors have been demonstrated. A specific capacitance value of about 1300 F g(-1) of PANI has been obtained at a discharge power of about 0.5 kW kg(-1). This value is several times higher than those reported in the literature for PANI and is, perhaps, the highest value known for a capacitor material. The inexpensive SS substrate and the high-capacitance PANI are favorable factors for commercial exploitation. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

LixCoOy films with x < 1 and y > 2 have been prepared by radio-frequency (rf) sputtering from high temperature (HT) LiCoO2 targets. Their structures have been examined with high resolution electron microscopy. Conductivities have been studied between 77 and 400 K. The electrochemical behaviour of film electrodes have been investigated with Li/LiClO4-PC/LixCoOy cells. The annealed films consist of nanocrystalline domains with amorphous boundaries. Electrical conductivities appear to arise from variable-range hopping (VRH) of holes. The films form good electrodes with operating potentials between 2.7 and 3.8 V. The observations have been discussed on the basis of a tentative and heuristic molecular orbital based energy band diagram. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Thermodynamic properties of Li3N dissolved in the molten LiCl salt at 900 K were explored using electrochemical methods. It was difficult to determine precisely the decomposition voltage of Li3N dissolved in the molten salt by cyclic voltammetry. The oxidation wave of N3– ion could not be located with high accuracy. However, the lithium activity of the Pb-Li alloy in equilibrium with the molten salt containing dissolved Li3N under nitrogen atmosphere could be measured electrochemically with high accuracy using the Li/Li + reference electrode. Under the conditions used in this study, the potential of the Li-Pb electrode is equal to the decomposition voltage of Li3N. The activity of Li3N in molten LiCl was determined for anionic fractions of N3– ranging from xN3– = 10–4 to 0.028. The nitride ion concentration in the salt was determined by chemical titration. The activity coefficient of the Li3N at high dilution was found to be very low, around 10–4. The activity coefficient increases sharply with composition and has a value of 0.25 at xN3– = 0.028. ©2001 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.

Carbon nanotubes produced by the treatment of Mg1−xMxAl2O4 (M = Fe, Co, or Ni; x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, or 0.4) spinels with an H2–CH4 mixture at 1070 °C have been investigated systematically. The grains of the oxide-metal composite particles are uniformly covered by a weblike network of carbon nanotube bundles, several tens of micrometers long, made up of single-wall nanotubes with a diameter close to 4 nm. Only the smallest metal particles (<5 nm) are involved in the formation of the nanotubes. A macroscopic characterization method involving surface area measurements and chemical analysis has been developed in order to compare the different nanotube specimens. An increase in the transition metal content of the catalyst yields more carbon nanotubes (up to a metal content of 10.0 wt% or x = 0.3), but causes a decrease in carbon quality. The best compromise is to use 6.7 wt% of metal (x = 0.2) in the catalyst. Co gives superior results with respect to both the quantity and quality of the nanotubes. In the case of Fe, the quality is notably hampered by the formation of Fe3C particles.

In this study we have employed multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), decorated with platinum as catalytic layer for the reduction of tri-iodide ions in dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC). MWCNTs have been prepared by a simple one step pyrolysis method using ferrocene as the catalyst and xylene as the carbon source. Platinum decorated MWCNTs have been prepared by chemical reduction method. The as prepared MWCNTs and Pt/MWCNTs have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In combination with a dye adsorbed TiO(2) photoanode and an organic liquid electrolyte, Pt/MWCNT composite showed an enhanced short circuit current density of 16.12 mA/cm(2) leading to a cell efficiency of 6.50% which is comparable to that of Platinum. Long-term stability studies of particle storage rings can not be carried out using conventional numerical integration algorithms. We require symplectic integration algorithms which are both fast and accurate. In this paper, we study a symplectic integration method wherein the sym-plectic map representing the Hamiltonian system is refactorized using polynomial symplectic maps. This method is used to perform long term integration on a particle storage ring.

Three-dimensional effects are a primary source of discrepancy between the measured values of automotive muffler performance and those predicted by the plane wave theory at higher frequencies. The basically exact method of (truncated) eigenfunction expansions for simple expansion chambers involves very complicated algebra, and the numerical finite element method requires large computation time and core storage. A simple numerical method is presented in this paper. It makes use of compatibility conditions for acoustic pressure and particle velocity at a number of equally spaced points in the planes of the junctions (or area discontinuities) to generate the required number of algebraic equations for evaluation of the relative amplitudes of the various modes (eigenfunctions), the total number of which is proportional to the area ratio. The method is demonstrated for evaluation of the four-pole parameters of rigid-walled, simple expansion chambers of rectangular as well as circular cross-section for the case of a stationary medium. Computed values of transmission loss are compared with those computed by means of the plane wave theory, in order to highlight the onset (cutting-on) of various higher order modes and the effect thereof on transmission loss of the muffler. These are also compared with predictions of the finite element methods (FEM) and the exact methods involving eigenfunction expansions, in order to demonstrate the accuracy of the simple method presented here.

A capillary-enforced template-based method has been applied to fabricate Pb(0.76)Ca(0.24)TiO(3) (PCT24) nanotubes via filling PCT24 precursor solution, prepared by modified sol-gel method, into nanochannels of anodic aluminum oxide templates. The morphology and structure of as-prepared PCT24 were examined by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction techniques. The obtained PCT24 nanotubes with diameter of similar to 200 nm and wall thickness of similar to 20 nm exhibited a tetragonal perovskite structure. High resolution TEM (HRTEM) analysis confirmed that as-obtained PCT24 nanotubes made up of nanoparticles (5-8 nm) which were randomly aligned in the nanotubes. Formation of some solid crystalline PCT24 nanorods, Y-junctions and multi-branches were observed. Interconnections in the pores of template are responsible for the growth of Y-junctions and multi-branches. The possible formation mechanism of PCT24 nanotubes/nanorods was discussed. Ferroelectric hysteresis loops of PCT24 nanotube arrays were measured, showing a room temperature ferroelectric characteristic of as-prepared PCT24 nanotubes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Polyaniline (PANI) and PANI/CNT (multiwall carbon nanotubes, CNT) composites were prepared using an oxidative chemical polymerization method with ammonium persulfate and dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid as the oxidizing agent and surfactant, respectively. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy spectra illustrate the presence of PANI in the composite and show that some interaction exists between PANI and CNT. Embedding of CNT in the PANI matrix is confirmed by scanning electron micrography. Conductivity of the PANI/CNT composites was higher than that of pure PANI, and the maximum conductivity obtained was 4.44 S/cm at 20 wt.% CNT.

Graphene's nano-dimensional nature and excellent electron transfer properties underlie its electrocatalytic behavior towards certain substances. In this light, we have used graphene in the electrochemical detection of bisphenol A. Graphene sheets were produced via soft chemistry route involving graphite oxidation and chemical reduction. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy were used for the characterization of the as-synthesized graphene. Graphene exhibited amorphous structure in comparison with pristine graphite from XRD spectra. FTIR showed that graphene exhibits OH and COOH groups due to incomplete reduction. Raman spectroscopy revealed that multi-layered graphene was produced due to low intensity of the 2D-peak. Glassy carbon electrode was modified with graphene by a simple drop and dry method. Cyclic voltammetry was used to study the electrochemical properties of the prepared graphene-modified glassy carbon electrode using potassium ferricyanide as a redox probe. The prepared graphene- modified glassy carbon electrode exhibited more facile electron kinetics and enhanced current of about 75% when compared to the unmodified glassy carbon electrode. The modified electrode was used for the detection of bisphenol A. Under the optimum conditions, the oxidation peak current of bisphenol A varied linearly with concentration over a wide range of 5 x 10(-8) mol L-1 to 1 x 10(-6) mol L-1 and the detection limit of this method was as low as 4.689 x 10(-8) M. This method was also employed to determine bisphenol A in a real sample

One of the metastable phases of vanadium dioxide, VO2(B) bundles of nanorods and microspheres have been synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method by dispersing V2O5 in aqueous quinol. The obtained products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical discharge-charge test for lithium battery. It was found that the morphologies of the obtained VO2(B) can be tuned by manipulating the relative amount of quinol. The electrochemical test found that the bundles of nanorods exhibit an initial discharge capacity of 171 mAh g(-1) and its almost stabilized capacity was reached to 108 mAh g(-1) after 47 cycles at a current density of 0.1 mA g(-1). The formation mechanism of the VO2(B) bundles of nanorods and microspheres was also discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We report here a multiple-nitrile based lithium-salt liquid electrolyte. The ionic conductivity of poly (propyl ether imine) (abbreviated as PETIM) lithium salt dendrimer liquid electrolyte was observed to be a function of dendrimer generation number, n=0 (monomer)-3. While the highest room temperature ionic conductivity value (similar to 10(-1) Sm-1) was recorded for the bis-2cyanoethyl ether monomer (i.e. zeroth generation; G(0)-CN), conductivity decreased progressively to lower values (similar to 10(-3) Sm-1) with increase in generation number (G(1)-CN -> G(3)-CN). The G(0)-CN and higher dendrimer generations showed high thermal stability (approximate to 150 to 200 degrees C), low moisture sensitivity and tunable viscosity (similar to 10(-2) (G(0)-CN) to 3 (G(3)-CN) Pa s). The linker ether group was found to be crucial for ion transport and also eliminated a large number of detrimental features, chiefly moisture sensitivity, chemical instability associated typically with prevalent molecular liquid solvents. Based on the combination of several beneficial physicochemical properties, we presently envisage that the PETIM dendrimers especially the G(0)-CN electrolytes hold promise as electrolytes in electrochemical devices such as lithium-ion batteries.

The hydrothermal reaction of a mixture of a colloidal dispersion of graphite oxide and ammonium vanadate yielded a hybrid made of graphene and a nanotubular metastable monoclinic polymorph of VO2, known as VO2(B). The formation of VO2(B) nanotubes is accompanied by the reduction of graphite oxide. Initially the partially scrolled graphite oxide layers act as templates for the crystallization of VO2(B) in the tubular morphology. This is followed by the reduction of graphite oxide to graphene resulting in a hybrid in which VO2(B) nanotubes are dispersed in graphene. Electron microscopic studies of the hybrid reveal that the VO2(B) nanotubes are wrapped by and trapped between graphene sheets. The hybrid shows potential to be a high capacity cathode material for lithium ion batteries. It exhibits a high capacity (similar to 450 mAh/g) and cycling stability. The high capacity of the hybrid is attributed to the interaction between the graphene sheets and the VO2(B) tubes which improves the charge-transfer. The graphene matrix prevents the aggregation of the VO2(B) nanotubes leading to high cycling stability. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
