We present the exact solution to a one-dimensional multicomponent quantum lattice model interacting by an exchange operator which falls off as the inverse sinh square of the distance. This interaction contains a variable range as a parameter and can thus interpolate between the known solutions for the nearest-neighbor chain and the inverse-square chain. The energy, susceptibility, charge stiffness, and the dispersion relations for low-lying excitations are explicitly calculated for the absolute ground state, as a function of both the range of the interaction and the number of species of fermions.

The reaction between Fe foil and a disc of ilmenite solid solution (Co-0.48 Ni-0.52) TiO3 was studied at 1273 K. At the metal/oxide interface, the displacement reaction, Fe + (Co,Mg)TiO3 = Co + (Fe,Mg)TiO3 occurs, resulting in an ilmenite solid solution containing three divalent cations. Ferrous ions diffuse into the oxide solid solution and cause the precipitation of Co-Fe alloy as discrete particles inside the oxide matrix. The morphology of the product layer was characterized by SEM. Only two phases, alloy and ilmenite, were detected in the reaction zone. This suggests that the local flux condition imposed by ilmenite stoichiometry (Co + Fe + Mg):Ti = 1:1] was satisfied during the reactive diffusion: (J(Co) + J(Fe) + J(Mg)) = J(Ti). The composition of the alloy and the oxide was determined using EPMA as a function of distance in the direction of diffusion. Although Mg does not participate in the displacement reaction, its composition in the ilmenite phase was found to be position dependent inside the reaction zone. The up-hill diffusion of inert Mg is caused by the development of chemical potential gradients as a result of displacement reaction. The evolution of composition gradients inside the reaction zone and the diffusion path in a ternary composition diagram of the system CoTiO3-FeTiO3-MgTiO3 are discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The reaction of 2-formylbenzenesulfonyl chloride 1 and its pseudo isomer 2 with primary amines give either the corresponding sulfonamido Schiff bases or the corresponding 2-formylbenzenesulfonamide depending on the concentration of the amine used. The derivatives exist as an equilibrium mixture of the corresponding sulfonamide and 2-alkyl-3-hydroxy(or 3-aminoalkyl)-benzisothiazole-1,1-dioxide. Spectroscopic studies suggest that 2-formylbenzenesulfonamides exist as benzisothiazole-1,1-dioxides in the solid state, as a mixture of 2-formylbenzenesulfonamide and the corresponding benzisothiazole-1,1-dioxide in solution and as 2-formyl-benzenesulfonamides in the gas phase.

A simple, cost-effective and environment-friendly pathway for preparing highly porous matrix of giant dielectric material CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) through combustion of a completely aqueous precursor solution is presented. The pathway yields phase-pure and impurity-less CCTO ceramic at an ultra-low temperature (700 degrees C) and is better than traditional solid-state reaction schemes which fail to produce pure phase at as high temperature as 1000 degrees C (Li, Schwartz, Phys. Rev. B 75, 012104). The porous ceramic matrix on grinding produced CCTO powder having particle size in submicron order with an average size 300 nm. On sintering at 1050 degrees C for 5 h the powder shows high dielectric constants (>10(4) at all frequencies from 100 Hz to 100 kHz) and low loss (with 0.05 as the lowest value) which is suitable for device applications. The reaction pathway is expected to be extended to prepare other multifunctional complex perovskite materials. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A high-throughput screening was employed to identify new compounds in Cu(CH3COO)(2)center dot H2O-NIPA-heterocyclic ligand systems. Of the compounds identified, three compounds, Cu-3{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}(3)(C3N6H6)] (1), Cu-2(mu(3)-OH)(H2O){(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}(CN4H)]center dot-(H2O) (II), and Cu-2(mu(3)-OH)(H2O){(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2}-)(CN5H2)]center dot 2(H2O) (III), have been isolated as good quality single crystals by employing conventional hydrothermal methods. Three other compounds, Cu-2{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}-(CN4H)(H2O) (IIa), Cu-2{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}(CN5H2) (IIIa), and Cu-2{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}{(CN5H2)(2)}2H(2)O (IIIb), were identified by a combination of elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and IR spectroscopic studies, although their structures are yet to be determined. The single crystalline compounds were also characterized by elemental analysis, TGA, IR, UV vis, magnetic, and catalytic studies. The structures of the compounds have paddle wheel (I) and infinite Cu 0(H) Cu chains (II and HI) connected with NLPA and heterocyclic ligands forming two-(II) and three-dimensional (I and III) structures. The bound and lattice water molecules in 11 and 111 could be reversibly removed/inserted without affecting the structure. In the case of II, the removal of water gives rise to a structural transition, but the dehydrated phase reverts back to the original phase on prolonged exposure to atmospheric conditions. Magnetic studies indicate an overall antiferromagnetism in all of the compounds. Lewis acid catalytic studies indicate that compounds II and HI are active for cyanosilylation of imines.

By carrying out contact-arc vaporization of graphite in a partial atmosphere of Fe(CO)5, an iron-adduct with C60 has been obtained. The adduct has been characterized by various techniques including mass spectrometry, Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy and Fe K-EXAFS. Properties of this adduct are compared with those of an adduct prepared by solution method where Fe is clearly outside the cage. Results suggest that FeC60 obtained from the gas phase reaction has the Fe atom in the cage.

The solution- and melt-phase photochemistry of four trans-benzylidene-d,l-piperitones (1) has been investigated under a variety of conditions. The 1 undergo trans reversible cis isomerization to establish a quasi photostationary state. Further irradiation leads to 2 via oxidative ring closure. Conspicuously absent are dimers (obtained upon irradiation of the neat crystals) and the plausible Norrish Type II photoproducts, 3. Although 1c yields 2c, no evidence for the alternative cyclization route to 2a (requiring loss of HCl) has been observed. Rationalizations for the transformations are presented. The structure of 2b has been determined unambiguously from X-ray crystallographic analysis.

Cu (0.1 mol%) doped ZnO nanopowders have been successfully synthesized by a wet chemical method at a relatively low temperature (300 degrees C). Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy, Photoluminescence (PL) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements were used for characterization. PXRD results confirm that the nanopowders exhibit hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO without any secondary phase. The particle size of as-formed product has been calculated by Williamson-Hall (W-H) plots and Scherrer's formula is found to be in the range of similar to 40 nm. TEM image confirms the nano size crystalline nature of Cu doped ZnO. SEM micrographs of undoped and Cu doped ZnO show highly porous with large voids. UV-Vis spectrum showed a red shift in the absorption edge in Cu doped ZnO. PL spectra show prominent peaks corresponding to near band edge UV emission and defect related green emission in the visible region at room temperature and their possible mechanisms have been discussed. The EPR spectrum exhibits a broad resonance signal at g similar to 2.049, and two narrow resonances one at g similar to 1.990 and other at g similar to 1.950. The broad resonance signal at g similar to 2.049 is a characteristic of Cu2+ ion whereas the signal at g similar to 1.990 and g similar to 1.950 can be attributed to ionized oxygen vacancies and shallow donors respectively. The spin concentration (N) and paramagnetic susceptibility (X) have been evaluated and discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Electron transfer reactions between donor-acceptor pairs in solution and in organized media exhibit diverse behaviour. Recent experiments have indicated an interesting breakdown of the Marcus parabolic energy gap dependence in the normal regime for back electron transfer from contact ion pairs. A novel explanation of this breakdown has recently been proposed (M. Tachiya and S. Murata, J. Am. Chem. Sec., 116(1994) 2434) which attributes the breakdown to the interplay between the relaxation in the reactant well and the reaction. A particularly interesting aspect of the model is that it envisages the electron transfer in the normal regime to take place from a completely non-equilibrium condition. In this article a time dependent solution of the model is presented for the first time, after generalizing it to include a realistic initial population distribution. The decay of the contact ion pair population is completely non-exponential. This can be used to check the validity of the Tachiya-Murata model. The dynamics of electron transfer from the solvent separated ion pair, which seem to obey the Marcus relation, is exponential.

An amorphous phase has been synthesized by mechanical alloying in a planetary mill over a nickel content range of 1070 at.% in the Ti---Ni system and a copper content range of 1050 at.% in the Ti---Cu system. In the case of ternary Ti---Ni---Cu alloys the glass-forming composition range has been found to be given by x = 1020 for Ti60Ni40 ? xCux, x = 10 30 for Ti50Ni50 ? xCux and x = 10 40 for Ti40Ni60 ? xCux alloys. The difficulty in the amorphization of copper-rich compositions is explained in the light of enthalpy composition diagrams calculated for the ternary solid solution and the amorphous phase.

We have synthesised and determined the solution conformation and X-ray crystal structure of the octapeptide Ac-Delta Phe(1)-Val(2)-Delta Phe(3)-Phe(4)-Ala(5)-Val(6)-Delta Phe(7)-Gly(8)-OCH3 (Delta Phe = alpha,beta-dehydrophenylalanine) containing three Delta Phe residues as conformation constraining residues. In the solid state, the peptide folds into (i) an N-terminal (3)10(R)-helical pentapeptide segment, (ii) a middle non-helical segment, and (iii) a C-terminal incipient (3)10(L)-helical segment. The results of H-1 NMR data also suggest that a similar multiple-turn conformation for the peptide is largely maintained in solution. Though the C-terminal helix is incipient, the overall conformation of the octapeptide matches well with the conformation of the hairpins reported. Comparison of the pi-turn seen in the octapeptide molecule with those observed in proteins at the C-terminal end of helixes shows the structural similarity among them. A water molecule mediates the 5 --> 2 hydrogen bond in the pi-turn region. This is the first example of a water-inserted pi-turn in oligopeptides reported so far. Comparison between the present octapeptide and another (3)10(R)-helical dehydro nonapeptide Boc-Val-Delta Phe-Phe-Ala-Phe-Delta Phe-Val-Delta Phe-Gly-OCH3 solved by us recently, demonstrates the possible sequence-dependent conformational variations in alpha,beta-dehydrophenylalanine-containing oligopeptides.

A solid-state miscibility gap in the pseudo-binary system BaO-SrO is delineated by X-ray diffraction studies on samples equilibrated either in vacuum or under flowing inert gas at temperatures between 1073 and 1423 K. For the SrxBa1-xO solid solution an asymmetric phase boundary, characterized by a critical temperature of 1356 (+/-4) K and composition x=0.55 (+/-0.008), is obtained. Thermodynamic mixing properties of the solid solution, derived from the experimental phase boundary compositions and temperatures, can be represented by the expression: Delta G(E)=x(1-x){33 390-7.09T)x+(29 340-6.23T)(1-x)} J mol(-1)It is necessary to include excess entropy terms to obtain a good fit to the experimental data. The chemical spinodal curve is computed from the thermodynamic parameters

A novel solid solution in the system Bi-W-Cu-O has been synthesized and its structural and dielectric properties studied. The solid solution Bi2O3-(1-x)WO3-xCuO exists up to x = 0.7; the solid solutions up to x = 0.65 are orthorhombic but stabilize in tetragonal structure in a narrow range around x = 0.7. The solid solutions are non-centrosymmetric and exhibit ferroelectric behaviour similar to their parent phase Bi2WO6. The Curie point of the solid solution is found to decrease with increase in x.

Abstract: Activities in the spinel solid solution FexMg1-xAl2O4 saturated with alpha-Al2O3 have been measured for the compositional range 0 < X < 1 between 1100 and 1350 K using a bielectrolyte solid-state galvanic cell, which may be represented as Pt, Fe + FexMg1-xAl2O4 + alpha-Al2O3//(Y2O3)ThO2/ (CaO)ZrO2//Fe + FeAl2O4 + alpha-Al2O3, Pt Activities of ferrous and magnesium aluminates exhibit small negative deviations from Raoult's law. The excess free energy of mixing of the solid solution is a symmetric function of composition and is independent of temperature: Delta G(E) = -1990 X(1 - X J/mol. Theoretical analysis of cation distribution in spinel solid solution also suggests mild negative deviations from ideality. The lattice parameter varies linearly with composition in samples quenched from 1300 K. Phase relations in the FeO-MgO-Al2O3 system at 1300 K are deduced from the results of this study and auxiliary thermodynamic data from the literature. The calculation demonstrates the influence of intracrystalline ion exchange equilibrium between nonequivalent crystallographic sites in the spinel structure on intercrystalline ion exchange equilibrium between the monoxide and spinel solid solutions (tie-lines). The composition dependence of oxygen partial pressure at 1300 K is evaluated for three-phase equilibria involving the solid solutions Fe + FexMg1-xAl2O4 + alpha-Al2O3 and Fe + FeyMg1-yO + FexMg1-xAl2O4. Dependence of X, denoting the composition of the spinel solid solution, on parameter Y, characterizing the composition of the monoxide solid solution with rock salt structure, in phase fields involving the two solid solutions is elucidated. The tie-lines are slightly skewed toward the MgAl2O4 corner.
