With the aim of finding simple methods for the fabrication of He II refilling devices, He II flow has been studied through filters made from various fine powders (oxides and metals, grain sizes in the range 0.05–2 μm) by compacting them under pressure. The results obtained for the different states of He II flow, especially in the “breakthrough” and “easy flow” range, are explained by the fountain effect, He II hydrodynamics and the choking effect. According to the results, pressedpowder filters can be classified into three groups with different flow characteristics, of which the “good transfer filters” with a behaviour neatly described by simple theory are suitable for use in He II refilling devices.

All the second-order boundary-layer effects have been studied for the steady laminar compressible 3-dimensional stagnation-point flows with variable properties and mass transfer for both saddle and nodal point regions. The governing equations have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme. Results for the heat transfer and skin friction have been obtained for several values of the mass-transfer rate, wall temperature, and also for several values of parameters characterizing the nature of stagnation point and variable gas properties. The second-order effects on the heat transfer and skin friction at the wall are found to be significant and at large injection rates, they dominate over the results of the first-order boundary layer, but the effect of large suction is just the opposite. In general, the second-order effects are more pronounced in the saddle-point region than in the nodal-point region. The overall heat-transfer rate for the 3-dimensional flows is found to be more than that of the 2-dimensional flows.

This paper presents two approximate analytical expressions for nonlinear electric fields in the principal direction in axially symmetric (3D) and two dimensional (2D) ion trap mass analysers with apertures (holes in case of 3D traps and slits in case of 2D traps) on the electrodes. Considered together (3D and 2D), we present composite approximations for the principal unidirectional nonlinear electric fields in these ion traps. The composite electric field E has the form E = E-noaperture + E-aperture. where E-noaperture is the field within an imagined trap which is identical to the practical trap except that the apertures are missing and E-aperture is the field contribution due to apertures on the two trap electrodes. The field along the principal axis, of the trap can in this way be well approximated for any aperture that is not too large. To derive E-aperture. classical results of electrostatics have been extended to electrodes with finite thickness and different aperture shapes.E-noaperture is a modified truncated multipole expansion for the imagined trap with no aperture. The first several terms in the multipole expansion are in principle exact(though numerically determined using the BEM), while the last term is chosen to match the field at the electrode. This expansion, once Computed, works with any aperture in the practical trap. The composite field approximation for axially symmetric (3D) traps is checked for three geometries: the Paul trap, the cylindrical ion trap (CIT) and an arbitrary other trap. The approximation for 2D traps is verified using two geometries: the linear ion trap (LIT) and the rectilinear ion trap (RIT). In each case, for two aperture sizes (10% and 50% of the trap dimension), highly satisfactory fits are obtained. These composite approximations may be used in more detailed nonlinear ion dynamics Studies than have been hitherto attempted. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Heat transfer in a MHD flow between two infinite eccentric disks rotating with different speeds is considered when the plates are maintained at different temperatures. The results for the corresponding nonmagnetic case presented wrongly by Banerjee and Borkakati [7] are corrected. It is observed that the eccentric rotation reduces the heat transfer on the disks.

The kinetics of decomposition of the carbonate Sr2Zr2O5CO3, are greatly influenced by the thermal effects during its formation. (α−t) curves are found to be sigmoidal and they could be analysed based on power law equations followed by first-order decay. The presence of carbon in the vacuum-prepared sample of carbonate has a strong deactivating effect. The carbonate is fairly crystalline and its decomposition leads to the formation of crystalline strontium zirconate.

The effect of cobalt salicylate on the oxidative degradation and ignition of polystyrene has been studied. It was found that cobalt salicylate sensitizes both the degradation and ignition of polystyrene by facilitating electron-transfer processes in the propagation step. From thermochemical and kinetic studies it was found that the cobalt ion, owing to its ability to exist in variable valence states, promotes electron transfer in the propagation step of polymer degradation, increasing the rate of propagation and consequently the overall rate. Using solid-phase thermal ignition theory, an attempt has been made to explain the sensitization of ignition by the cobalt ion.

Discharge periods of lead-acid batteries are significantly reduced at subzero centigrade temperatures. The reduction is more than what can he expected due to decreased rates of various processes caused by a lowering of temperature and occurs despite the fact that active materials are available for discharge. It is proposed that the major cause for this is the freezing of the electrolyte. The concentration of acid decreases during battery discharge with a consequent increase in the freezing temperature. A battery freezes when the discharge temperature falls below the freezing temperature. A mathematical model is developed for conditions where charge-transfer reaction is the rate-limiting step. and Tafel kinetics are applicable. It is argued that freezing begins from the midplanes of electrodes and proceeds toward the reservoir in-between. Ionic conduction stops when one of the electrodes freezes fully and the time taken to reach that point, namely the discharge period, is calculated. The predictions of the model compare well to observations made at low current density (C/5) and at -20 and -40 degrees C. At higher current densities, however, diffusional resistances become important and a more complicated moving boundary problem needs to be solved to predict the discharge periods. THE rapid development of recombinant DNA technology has brought forth a revolution in biology'>", it aids us to have a closer look at the 'way genes are organized, eS11 ecially in the complex eucaryotic genornes'<", Although many animal and yeast genes have been studied in detail using recombinant DNA technology, plant genes have seldom been targets for such studie., Germination is an ideal process to study gene expression .because it effects a . shift in the metabolic status of seeds from a state of 'dormancy to an active one. AJ;l understanding of gene organization and regulation darin.g germination can be accomplblted by molecular cloning of DNA from seeds lik.e rice. To study the status of histone, rRNA tRNA and other genes in the rice genome, a general method was developed to clone eucarvotic DNA in a' plasmid vector pBR 322. This essentially ~ involves the following steps. The rice embryo and plasmid pBR 322 DNAs were cut witll restriction endonuclease Bam Hi to generate stick.Y ends, The plasmid DNA was puosphatased, the DNA~ ware a~·tnealed and joined 'by T4 phage DNA ligase. The recombinant DNA molecules thus produced were transjerred into E. coli and colonies containing them Were selected by their sensitivity to tetracycline and resistance to ampicillin, Two clones were identified . 2S haVing tRNA genes by hybridization of the DNA in the clones \vitl1 32P-la.belled rice tRNAs.

E.S.R. investigations of γ-irradiated ferroelectric Sodium ammonium selenate, NaNH4SeO4•2H2O and its deuteriated analogue in powder and single crystal forms have led to a deeper understanding of the nature of the ferroelectric transition of 180 K. A number of paramagnetic species formed due to γ-irradiation have been identified on the basis of their g-factors and hyperfine features from 77Se. The radical SeO4 has been used as a microprobe in studying the phase transition.

The resistivity of two types of lithium fast-ion conductors, Li16-2xZnx(GeO4)4 (x=1,2) and Li3+xGexV1-xO4 (x=0.25,0.6,0.72), showed pronounced maxima as a function of pressure. For the first type, ln(ρ / ρ0) peaked at values of 0.12 (x=1) and 0.35 (x=2) near 20 kbar and decreased thereafter up to 80 kbar. Thermal activation energies and prefactors also showed corresponding maxima. For the second type, ln(ρ / ρ0) increased to 3-4 between 20 and 32 kbar. Near 80 kbar, ρ decreased (for x=0.25) by a factor of 250. The results are interpreted in terms of negative activation volumes.

The magnetofluid dynamic steady incompressible laminar boundary layer flow for a point sink with an applied magnetic field and mass transfer has been studied. The two-point boundary-value problem governed by self-similar equations has been solved numerically. It is observed that the magnetic field increases the skin friction, but reduces the heat transfer and mass flux diffusion. However, the skin friction, heat transfer and mass flux diffusion increase due to suction and the effect of injection is just opposite. Prandtl and Schmidt numbers affect the temperature and concentration, respectively.

Surface aeration systems employed in activated sludge plants are the most energy-intensive units of the plants and typically account for a higher percentage of the treatment facility's total energy use. The geometry of the aeration tank imparts a major effect on the system efficiency. It is said that at optimal geometric onditions, systems exhibits the maximum efficiency. Thus the quantification of the optimal geometric conditions in surface aeration tanks is needed. Optimal geometric conditions are also needed to scale up the laboratory result to the field installation. In the present work, experimental studies have been carried out on baffled and unbaffled circular surface aeration tanks to ascertain the optimal geometric conditions. It is found that no optimal geometric conditions exist for the liquid/water depth in circular surface aeration tanks; however, for design purposes, a standard value has been assumed. Based on the optimal geometric conditions, a scale-up equation has been developed for the baffled circular surface aeration tanks.

The morphology and crystal growth of poly(l-lactic acid), PLLA have been studied from the melt as a function of undercooling and molecular weight using hot stage microscopy. Attention has been given to the application of growth rate equation on the growth rate data of PLLA and thus various nucleation parameters have been calculated. The criteria of Regime I and Regime II types of crystallization has been applied for the evaluation of substrate lengths.
