In the absence of a reliable method for a priori prediction of structure and properties of inorganic solid materials, an experimental approach involving a systematic study of composition, structure and properties combined with chemical intuition based on previous experience is likely to be a viable alternative to the problem of rational design of inorganic materials. The approach is illustrated by taking perovskite lithium-ion conductors as an example.

Abstract: A wide range of compositions of grasses in the ternary Li2O-PbO-B2O3 glass system was prepared, and de and ac conductivity measurements were carried out on these glasses. The presence of lead leads to a decrease in de conductivities and an increase in the activation energies. This is likely to be due to the increase of the partial charges on the oxygen atoms and to the presence of the lone pair on the Pb atom; both of these factors impede lithium ion motion. The ac conductivity and dielectric behavior of these glasses support such a conjecture. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of lithium phosphate (Li2O-P2O5) glasses with varying Li2O content has been carried out. Two different P-O distances corresponding to phosphorus coordination with bridging oxygen (BO) and non-bridging oxygen (NBO) were identified in the simulated glasses. NBO-BO interconversion or bond switching was noted, which results in a dynamic equilibration of the tetrahedral phosphate units (P-n, n = 1,3 indicates the number of bridging oxygen atoms in the coordination of phosphorus). The NBO-BO bond switching is mildly activated with an effective activation barrier of 0.03-0.05 eV. Lithium ion jumps do not appear to be strongly coupled to bond switching. But the number of Li+ ions coordinated to an optimum number of NBOs and the number of Li+ ions jumping out of their sites appear to be correlated. Detailed analysis was made of the dynamics of P-n species and new insights have been obtained regarding ion migration in network-modified phosphate glasses.

A novel series of vesicle-forming ion-paired amphiphiles, bis(hexadecyldimethylammonium)alkane dipalmitate (1a-1h), containing four chains were synthesized with two isolated headgroups. In each of these amphiphiles, the two headgroup charges are separated by a flexible polymethylene spacer chain -[(CH2)(m)]- of varying lengths (m) such that the length and the conformation of the spacer chain determine the intra-"monomer" headgroup separation. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that each of these forms bilayer membranes upon dispersion in aqueous media. The vesicular properties of these aggregates have been examined by differential scanning calorimetry and temperature-dependent fluorescence anisotropy measurements. Interestingly, their T-m values decreased with the increase in the m value. Thus while the apparent T-m of the lipid with m = 2 (1a) is 74.1 degrees C, the corresponding value observed for the lipid with m = 12 (1h) is 38.9 degrees C. The fluorescence anisotropy values (r) for 1b-1g were quite high (r similar to 0.3) compared to that of 1h (r similar to 0.23) at 20-30 degrees C in their gel states. On the other hand, the r value for vesicular 1b beyond melting was higher (0.1) compared to any of those for 1c-1h (similar to 0.04-0.06). X-ray diffraction of the cast films was performed to understand the nature and the thickness of these membrane organizations. The membrane widths ranged from 30 to 51 A as the m values varied. The entrapment of a small water-soluble solute, riboflavin, by the individual vesicular aggregates, and their sustenance: under an imposed transmembrane pH gradient have also been examined. These results show that all lipid vesicles entrap riboflavin and that generally the resistance to OH- permeation decreases with the increase in m value. Finally, all the above observations were comparatively analyzed, and on the basis of the calculated structures of these lipids, it was possible to conclude that membrane propel-ties can be modulated by spacer chain length variation of the ion-paired amphiphiles.

The ion conduction and thermal properties of composite solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) comprising Poly(ethylene) Glycol (PEG, mol wt. 2000), lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) and insulating Mn0.03Zn0.97Al2O4 nanoparticle fillers were studied by complex impedance analysis and DSC techniques. The average size of the nanoparticles was determined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) using Scherrer's equation and was found to be similar to 8 nm. The same was also determined by TEM imaging and found to be similar to 12 nm. The glass transition temperature T, as measured by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), showed a minimum at 5 mol% of narroparticles. Fractional crystallinity was determined using DSC. NMR was used to deter-mine crystallinity of a pure PEG sample, which was then used as the standard. Fractional crystallinity X. was the lowest for 5 mol% and beyond. The ionic conductivity of the composite polymer electrolyte containing 5 mol% Mn0.03Zn0.97Al2O4 nanoparticles was found to be 1.82 x 10(-5) S/cm, while for the pristine one, it was 7.27 x 10(-7) S/cm at room temperature. As a function of nanoparticle content, conductivity was observed to go through two maxima, one at around 5 mol% and another shallower one at around 12 mol%. The temperature dependence of conductivity could be divided into two regions, one consistent with Arrhenius behaviour and the other with VTF. We conclude that the enhancement of ionic conductivity on the addition of Mn0.03Zn0.97Al2O4 nanoparticles is a result of reduction in both the T, and the crystallinity. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Two new classes of mono- and bis-D-pi-A cryptand derivatives with a flexible and a rigid cryptand core have been synthesized. The linear and nonlinear optical properties of these molecules are probed. The three dimensional cavity of the cryptand moiety has been utilized to modulate the SHG intensity to different extents in solution with metal ion inputs such as Ni-II,Cu-II,Zn-II, and Cd-II. We also report that decomplexation events can be used to reversibly modulate their NLO responses.

Detailed small angle neutron scattering ( SANS) studies were carried out with the aqueous vesicular (unilamellar) suspension of dimeric ion-paired lipids (2a-2c) for spacer lengths corresponding to n-values of 2, 6 and 10 and monomeric ion-paired lipid (3) below and above the phase transition temperature of each amphiphile. The vesicular structure strongly depends on the spacer chain length. The mean vesicle size is smallest for the lipid with a short spacer, n = 3 and it increases with the increase in the spacer chain length. The bilayer thickness also decreases with the increase in the spacer chain length. The size polydispersity increases with the increase in the spacer chain length (n-value).

Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier and highest energy density fuel. Water gas shift (WGS) reaction is an important reaction to generate hydrogen from steam reforming of CO. A new WGS catalyst, Ce(1-x)Ru(x)O(2-delta) (0 <= x <= 0.1) was prepared by hydrothermal method using melamine as a complexing agent. The Catalyst does not require any pre-treatment. Among the several compositions prepared and tested, Ce(0.95)Ru(0.05)O(2-delta) (5% Ru(4+) ion substituted in CeO(2)) showed very high WGS activity in terms of high conversion rate (20.5 mu mol.g(-1).s(-1) at 275 degrees C) and low activation energy (12.1 kcal/mol). Over 99% conversion of CO to CO(2) by H(2)O is observed with 100% H(2) selectivity at >= 275 degrees C. In presence of externally fed CO(2) and H(2) also, complete conversion of CO to CO(2) was observed with 100% H(2) selectivity in the temperature range of 305-385 degrees C. Catalyst does not deactivate in long duration on/off WGS reaction cycle due to absence of surface carbon and carbonate formation and sintering of Ru. Due to highly acidic nature of Ru(4+) ion, surface carbonate formation is also inhibited. Sintering of noble metal (Ru) is avoided in this catalyst because Ru remains in Ru(4+) ionic state in the Ce(1-x)Ru(x)O(2-delta) catalyst.

The role of homogeneity in ex situ grown conductive coatings and dimensionality in the lithium storage properties of TiO(2) is discussed here. TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet comprising of mixed crystallographic phases of anatase and TiO(2) (B) have been synthesized by an optimized hydrothermal method. Surface modifications of TiO(2) nanotube are realized via coating the nanotube with Ag nanoparticles and amorphous carbon. The first discharge cycle capacity (at current rate = 10 mA g(-1)) for TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet were 355 mAh g(-1) and 225 mAhg(-1), respectively. The conductive surface coating stabilized the titania crystallographic structure during lithium insertion-deinsertion processes via reduction in the accessibility of lithium ions to the trapping sites. The irreversible capacity is beneficially minimized from 110 mAh g(-1) for TiO(2) nanotubes to 96 mAh g(-1) and 57 mAhg(-1) respectively for Ag and carbon modified TiO(2) nanotubes. The homogeneously coated amorphous carbon over TiO(2) renders better lithium battery performance than randomly distributed Ag nanoparticles coated TiO(2) due to efficient hopping of electrons. Electronic states of CeO(2), Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Pt (x) O(2 -aEuro parts per thousand delta) , and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x -aEuro parts per thousand y) Ti (y) Pt (x) O(2 -aEuro parts per thousand delta) electrodes have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as a function of applied potential for oxygen evolution and formic acid and methanol oxidation. Ionically dispersed platinum in Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Pt (x) O(2 -aEuro parts per thousand delta) and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x -aEuro parts per thousand y) Ti (y) Pt (x) O(2 -aEuro parts per thousand delta) is active toward these reactions compared with CeO(2) alone. Higher electrocatalytic activity of Pt(2+) ions in CeO(2) and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Ti (x) O(2) compared with the same amount of Pt(0) in Pt/C is attributed to Pt(2+) ion interaction with CeO(2) and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Ti (x) O(2) to activate the lattice oxygen of the support oxide. Utilization of this activated lattice oxygen has been demonstrated in terms of high oxygen evolution in acid medium with these catalysts. Further, ionic platinum in CeO(2) and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Ti (x) O(2) does not suffer from CO poisoning effect unlike Pt(0) in Pt/C due to participation of activated lattice oxygen which oxidizes the intermediate CO to CO(2). Hence, higher activity is observed toward formic acid and methanol oxidation compared with same amount of Pt metal in Pt/C.

Probes based on anthra[1,2-d]imidazole-6,11-dione were designed and synthesized for selective ion sensing. Each probe acted as strong colorimetric sensors for fluoride and cyanide ions and exhibited intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) band, which showed significant red-shifts after addition of either the F(-) or CN(-) ion. One of the probes (2) showed selective colorimetric sensing for both cyanide and fluoride ions. In organic medium, 2 showed selective color change with fluoride and cyanide, whereas in aqueous organic medium it showed a ratiometric response selectively for cyanide ion.

A combined electrochemical method and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) has been utilized to understand the Pd(2+)/CeO(2) interaction in Ce(1-x)Pd(x)O(2-delta) (x = 0.02). A constant positive potential (chronoamperometry) is applied to Ce(0.98)Pd(0.02)O(2-delta) working electrode which causes Ce(4+) to reduce to Ce(3+) to the extent of similar to 35%, while Pd remains in the +2 oxidation state. Electrochemically cycling this electrode between 0.0-1.2 V reverts back to the original state of the catalyst. This reversibility is attributed to the reversible reduction of Ce(4+) to Ce(3+) state. CeO(2) electrode with no metal component reduces to CeO(2-y) (y similar to 0.4) after applying 1.2 V which is not reversible and the original composition of CeO(2) cannot be brought back in any electrochemical condition. During the electro-catalytic oxygen evolution reaction at a constant 1.2 V for 1000 s, Ce(0.98)Pd(0.02)O(2-delta) reaches a steady state composition with Pd in the +2 states and Ce(4+) : Ce(3+) in the ratio of 0.65 : 0.35. This composition can be denoted as Ce(0.63)(4+)Ce(0.35)(4+)Pd(0.02)O(2-delta-y) (y similar to 0.17). When pure CeO(2) is put under similar electrochemical condition, it never reaches the steady state composition and reduces almost to 85%. Thus, Ce(0.98)Pd(0.02)O(2-delta) forms a stable electrode for the electro-oxidation of H(2)O to O(2) unlike CeO(2) due to the metal support interaction.

A cross-linked polymer ``gel'' electrolyte obtained from free radical polymerization of a vinyl monomer (acrylonitrile; AN) in a room temperature ionic liquid electrolyte (N,N-methyl butyl pyrrolidinium-bis (trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide-lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl) imide;LiTFSI-[Py(1,4)-TFSI]) for application in high rate capability rechargeable lithium-ion batteries is discussed here. This is a novel alternative compared to the often employed approach of using a molecular liquid as the medium for performing the polymerization reaction. The polymer ``gel'' electrolytes (AN:Py(1,4)-TFSI = 0.16-0.18, w/w) showed remarkable compliable mechanical strength and higher thermal stability compared to LiTFSI-[Py(1,4)-TFSI]. Despite two orders increase in magnitude of viscosity of polymer ``gels'', the room temperature ionic conductivity of the ``gels'' (1.1 x 10(-3)-1.7 x 10(-3) Omega(-1) cm(-1)) were nearly identical to that of the ionic liquid (1.8 x 10(-3) Omega(-1) cm(-1)). The present ``gel'' electrolytes did not exhibit any ageing effects on ionic conductivity similar to the conventional polymer gel electrolytes (e.g. high molecular weight polymer + salt + high dielectric constant molecular solvent). The disorder (ionic liquid) to a relative order (cross-linked polymer electrolyte) transformation does not at all influence the concentration of conducting species. The polymer framework is still able to provide efficient pathways for fast ion transport. Unlike the ionic liquid which is impossible to assemble without a conventional separator in a cell, the polymer ``gel'' electrolyte could be conveniently assembled without a separator in a Li vertical bar lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO(4)) cell. Compared to the ionic liquid, the ``gel'' electrolyte showed exceptional cyclability and rate capability (current density: 35-760 mA g(-1) with LiFePO(4) electronically wired with carbon (amorphous or multiwalled nanotube [MWCNT]).
