A new Cu(II)-picolinate complex was synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The complex crystallizes in the centrosymmetric triclinic space group P (1) over bar (no. 2). Picolinate in the complex extends the neutral unit into a 1-D chain through mu(2)-bridging carboxylate. The complex has a hydrogen bonding acceptor in the second coordination sphere allowing lattice water to assemble neighboring chains. Water self-assembles to form a zig-zag 1-D chain. The adjacent chains are assembled by C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions result in the formation 2-D hydrogen bonded network. The overall hydrogen bonding between water chain and Cu-picolinate network yields a 3-D hydrogen bonded coordination network. X-ray structural analysis, FTIR and thermal analysis have been used to characterize the reported compound in the solid state.

New ternary copper (II) complexes, Cu(L-orn)(B)(Cl)](Cl center dot 2H(2)O) (1-2) where L-orn is L-ornithine, B is an N,N-donor heterocyclic base, viz. 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, 1) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 2), were synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. Complex 2 is characterized by the X-ray single crystallographic method. The complex shows a distorted square-pyramidal (4 + 1) CuN3OCl coordination sphere. Binding interactions of the complexes with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) were investigated by UV-Vis absorption titration, ethidium bromide displacement assay, viscometric titration experiment and DNA melting studies. Complex 2 shows appreciable chemical nuclease activity in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA). The complexes were subjected to in vitro cytotoxicity studies against carcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial cells (A-549) and human epithelial (HEp-2) cells. The IC50 values of 1 and 2 are less than that of cisplatin against HEp-2 cell lines. MIC values for 1 against the bacterial strains Streptococcus mutans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are 0.5 mM. We report here the synthesis and characterization of a few phenolate-based ligands bearing tert- amino substituent and their Zn(II) and Cu(II) metal complexes. Three mono/binuclear Zn(II) and Cu(II) complexes Zn(L1)(H2O)].CH3OH.H2O (1) (H (2) L1 = 6,6(')-(((2-dimethylamino)ethylazanediyl)bis(methylene))bis(2, 4-dimethylphenol), Zn-2(L2)(2)] (2) (H (2) L2 = 2,2(')-(((2-dimethylamino)ethyl)azanediyl)bis(methylene)bis(4- methylphenol) and Cu-2(L3)(2).CH2 Cl-2] (3) (H (2) L3 = (6,6(')-(((2-(diethylamino)ethyl)azanediyl)bis(methylene)) bis(methylene))bis(2,4-dimethylphenol) were synthesized by using three symmetrical tetradendate ligands containing N2O2 donor sites. These complexes are characterized by a variety of techniques including; elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, H-1, C-13 NMR spectroscopic and single crystal X-ray analysis. The new complexes have been tested for the phosphotriesterase (PTE) activity with the help of P-31 NMR spectroscopy. The P-31 NMR studies show that mononuclear complex Zn(L1)(H2O)].CH3OH.H2O (1) can hydrolyse the phosphotriester i.e., p-nitrophenyl diphenylphosphate (PNPDPP), more efficiently than the binuclear complexes Zn-2(L2)(2)] (2) and Cu-2(L3)(2).CH2Cl2] (3). The mononuclear Zn(II) complex (1) having one coordinated water molecule exhibits significant PTE activity which may be due to the generation of a Zn(II)-bound hydroxide ion during the hydrolysis reactions in CHES buffer at pH 9.0.

Coordination self-assembly of a series of tetranuclear Pt(II) macrocycles containing an organometallic backbone incorporating ethynyl functionality is presented. The 1 : 1 combination of a linear acceptor 1,4-bistrans-Pt(PEt3)(2)(NO3)(ethynyl)]benzene (1) with three different dipyridyl donor `clips' (L-a-L-c) afforded three 2 + 2] self-assembled Pt-4(II) macrocycles (2a-2c) in quantitative yields, respectively L-a = 1,3-bis-(3-pyridyl)isothalamide; L-b = 1,3-bis(3-pyridyl)ethynylbenzene; L-c = 1,8-bis(4-pyridyl)ethynylanthracene]. These macrocycles were characterized by multinuclear NMR (H-1 and P-31); ESI-MS spectroscopy and the molecular structures of 2a and 2b were established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. These macrocycles (2a-2c) are fluorescent in nature. The amide functionalized macrocycle 2a is used as a receptor to check the binding affinity of aliphatic acyclic dicarboxylic acids. Such binding affinity is examined using fluorescence and UV-Vis spectroscopic methods. A solution state fluorescence study showed that macrocycle 2a selectively binds (K-SV = 1.4 x 10(4) M-1) maleic acid by subsequent enhancement in emission intensity. Other aliphatic dicarboxylic acids such as fumaric, succinic, adipic, mesaconic and itaconic acids caused no change in the emission spectra; thereby demonstrating its potential use as a macrocyclic receptor in distinction of maleic acid from other aliphatic dicarboxylic acids.

Oximato bridged dinuclear copper(II) complex Cu(L)(CH3OH)](2)(ClO4)(2) with an oxime-Schiff base ligand, viz. 3-2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]imino]-2-butanoneoxime (HL), has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The dinuclear copper(II) complex crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with the unit cell parameters, a = 13.3564(9) angstrom, b = 12.0821(8) angstrom, c = 17.5045(11) angstrom, beta = 90.097, V = 2824.8(3) angstrom(3), Z = 4, R = 0.0769. The complex shows quasi-reversible cyclic voltammetric response at 0.844V (Delta E-p = 276 mV) at 100 mVs(-1). The binding studies of the complex with calf thymus DNA has been investigated using absorption spectrophotometry. Cleavage activity of the complex has been carried out on double stranded pBR 322 plasmid DNA by using gel electrophoresis experiments in the absence and in the presence of the oxidant, viz., H2O2.

The syntheses and characterization of some new mixed-ligand nickel(II) complexes {Ni(L-1)(PPh3)] (1), Ni(L-1)(Py)] (2), Ni(L-2)(PPh3)]center dot DMSO (3), Ni(L-2)(Imz)] (4), Ni(L-3)(4-pic)] (5) and RNi(L-3))(2)(mu-4,4'-byp)]center dot 2DMSO (6)1 of three selected thiosemicarbazones the 4-(p-X-phenyl)thiosemicarbazones of salicylaldehyde) (H2L1-3) (A, Scheme 1) are described in the present study, differing in the inductive effect of the substituent X (X = F, Br and OCH3), in order to observe its influence, if any, on the redox potentials and biological activity of the complexes. All the synthesized ligands and the metal complexes were successfully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis, NMR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The molecular structures of four mononuclear (1-3 and 5) and one dinuclear (6) Ni(II) complex have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of these complexes and their antibacterial activities indicate that compound 4 is the potential lead molecule for drug designing. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. We have conceived a supersymmetric Type II seesaw model at TeV scale, which has some additional particles consisting of scalar and fermionic triplet Higgs states, whose masses are around a few hundred GeV. In this particular model, we have studied constraints on the masses of triplet states arising from the lepton flavor violating (LFV) processes, such as mu -> 3e and mu -> e gamma. We have analyzed the implications of these constraints on other observable quantities such as the muon anomalous magnetic moment and the decay patterns of scalar triplet Higgses. Scalar triplet Higgs states can decay into leptons and into supersymmetric fields. We have found that the constraints from LFV can affect these various decay modes.

Introduction: For over half a century now, the dopamine hypothesis has provided the most widely accepted heuristic model linking pathophysiology and treatment in schizophrenia. Despite dopaminergic drugs being available for six decades, this system continues to represent a key target in schizophrenia drug discovery. The present article reviews the scientific rationale for dopaminergic medications historically and the shift in our thinking since, which is clearly reflected in the investigational drugs detailed. Areas covered: We searched for investigational drugs using the key words `dopamine,' `schizophrenia,' and `Phase II' in American and European clinical trial registers (clinicaltrials. gov; clinicaltrialsregister.eu), published articles using National Library of Medicine's PubMed database, and supplemented results with a manual search of cross-references and conference abstracts. We provide a brief description of drugs targeting dopamine synthesis, release or metabolism, and receptors (agonists/partial agonists/antagonists). Expert opinion: There are prominent shifts in how we presently conceptualize schizophrenia and its treatment. Current efforts are not as much focused on developing better antipsychotics but, instead, on treatments that can improve other symptom domains, in particular cognitive and negative. This new era in the pharmacotherapy of schizophrenia moves us away from the older `magic bullet' approach toward a strategy fostering polypharmacy and a more individualized approach shaped by the individual's specific symptom profile.

We investigate nucleosynthesis inside the gamma-ray burst (GRB) accretion disks formed by the Type II collapsars. In these collapsars, the core collapse of massive stars first leads to the formation of a proto-neutron star. After that, an outward moving shock triggers a successful supernova. However, the supernova ejecta lacks momentum and within a few seconds the newly formed neutron star gets transformed to a stellar mass black hole via massive fallback. The hydrodynamics of such an accretion disk formed from the fallback material of the supernova ejecta has been studied extensively in the past. We use these well-established hydrodynamic models for our accretion disk in order to understand nucleosynthesis, which is mainly advection dominated in the outer regions. Neutrino cooling becomes important in the inner disk where the temperature and density are higher. The higher the accretion rate (M) over dot is, the higher the density and temperature are in the disks. We deal with accretion disks with relatively low accretion rates: 0.001 M-circle dot s(-1) less than or similar to (M) over dot less than or similar to 0.01 M-circle dot s(-1) and hence these disks are predominantly advection dominated. We use He-rich and Si-rich abundances as the initial condition of nucleosynthesis at the outer disk, and being equipped with the disk hydrodynamics and the nuclear network code, we study the abundance evolution as matter inflows and falls into the central object. We investigate the variation in the nucleosynthesis products in the disk with the change in the initial abundance at the outer disk and also with the change in the mass accretion rate. We report the synthesis of several unusual nuclei like P-31, K-39, Sc-43, Cl-35 and various isotopes of titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese and copper. We also confirm that isotopes of iron, cobalt, nickel, argon, calcium, sulphur and silicon get synthesized in the disk, as shown by previous authors. Much of these heavy elements thus synthesized are ejected from the disk via outflows and hence they should leave their signature in observed data.

An organometallic building block 1,3,5-tris(4-trans-Pt(PEt3)(2)I(ethynyl)phenyl)benzene (1) incorporating Pt-ethynyl functionality has been synthesized and characterized. 2 + 3] self-assembly of its nitrate analogue 1,3,5-tris(4-trans-Pt(PEt3)(2)(ONO2)(ethynyl)phenyl)benzene (2) with ``clip'' type bidentate donors (L-1-L-3) separately afforded three trigonal prismatic architectures (3a-3c), respectively. All these prisms were characterized and their shapes/sizes are predicted through geometry optimization employing molecular mechanics universal force field (MMUFF) simulation. The extended p-conjugation including the presence of Pt-ethynyl functionality makes them electron rich as well as luminescent in nature. Macrocycles 3b and 3c exhibit fluorescence quenching in solution upon addition of picric acid PA], which is a common constituent of many explosives. Interestingly, the non-responsive nature of fluorescent intensity towards other electron-deficient nitro-aromatic explosives (NAEs) makes them promising selective sensors for PA with a detection limit predicted to be ppb level. Furthermore, solid-state quenching of fluorescent intensity of the thin film of 3b upon exposure to saturated vapor of picric acid has drawn special attention for infield applications.

Equimolar combination of a series of binuclear half-sandwich p-cymene ruthenium(II) building units Ru-2(mu-eta(4)-C2O4)(MeOH)(2)(eta(6)-p-cymene)(2)](OTf)(2) 1a](OTf)(2), Ru-2(mu-eta(4)-N,N'-diphenyloxamidato)( MeOH)(2)(eta(6)-p-cymene)(2)](OTf)(2) 1b](OTf)(2) and Ru-2(mu-eta(4)-C6H2O4)(MeOH)(2)(eta(6)-p-cymene)(2)](OTf)(2) 1c](OTf)(2) separately with imidazole-based ditopic ligands (L-1-L-2) in methanol yielded a series of tetranuclear metallamacrocycles 2-7](OTf)(4), respectively L-1 = 1,4-bis(imidazole-1-yl)benzene; L-2 = 4,4'-bis(imidazole-1-yl)biphenyl; OTf- = O3SCF3-]. Similarly, the reaction of Ru-2(mu-eta(4)-C2O4)(MeOH)(2)(eta(6)-p-cymene)2](OTf)(2) 1a](OTf)(2) with a triazine-based tritopic ligand 1,3,5-tris(imidazole-1-yl) triazine (L3) in 3: 2 M ratio afforded an unexpected tetranuclear macrocycle 8](OTf)(4) instead of an expected trigonal prismatic cage 8a](OTf)(6). All the self-assembled macrocycles 2-8](OTf)(4) were isolated in moderate to high yields and were fully characterized by multinuclear H-1, F-19] NMR, IR and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In addition, X-ray diffraction study on the single crystals of 3](OTf)(4) and 8](OTf)(4) also indicated the formation 2 + 2] self-assembled macrocycles. Despite the possibility of formation of different conformational isomeric macrocycles (syn-and anti) and polymeric product due to free rotation of ligand sites of imidazole linkers, the selective formation of single conformational isomer (anti) as the only product is quite interesting. Furthermore, the photo-and electrochemical properties of these assemblies have been studied using UV/Vis absorption and cyclic voltammetry analysis. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mono- and trinuclear copper(II) complexes with 2-1-(2-dimethylamino-ethylamino)-ethyl]-phenol (HL) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The mononuclear complex Cu(L)(H2O)(ONO2)] (1) crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2(1) /n with a square pyramidal Cu(II) center coordinated by the tridentate Schiff base (L) and a water ligand in the equatorial plane and an oxygen atom from nitrate in the axial position. The trinuclear complex (CuL)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (2) crystallizes in hexagonal space group P6(3); all three copper atoms are five-coordinate with square pyramidal geometries. The interactions of these complexes with calf-thymus DNA have been investigated using absorption spectrophotometry. The mononuclear complex binds more strongly than the trinuclear complex. The DNA cleavage activity of these complexes has been studied on double-stranded pBR 322 plasmid DNA by gel electrophoresis experiments in the absence and in the presence of added oxidant (H2O2). The trinuclear complex cleaves DNA more efficiently than the mononuclear complex in the presence of H2O2.

Synthesis and characterization of cis, trans-RuH(eta(2)-H-2)(PPh3)(2)(N-N)]OTf] (N-N = 2,2'-bipyridyl (bpy) 1a, 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpm) 2a; OTf = trifluoromethane sulfonate (CF3SO3)) complexes are reported. The cis-H-2/hydride ligands are involved in H-atom site exchange between the two moieties. This dynamics was investigated by variable temperature NMR spectral studies based on which the mechanism of the exchange process was deduced. The Delta G(#) for the exchange of H-atoms between the eta(2)-H-2 and hydride ligands was determined to be around 8 and 13 kJ mol(-1), respectively, for 1a and 2a. The H-H distances (d(HH), A) in complexes 1a and 2a have been calculated from the T-1(minimum) and (1)J(H, D) and are found to be 1.07 A (slow) and 0.95 A for 1a and 1.04 A (slow) and 0.94 A for 2a, respectively. The molecular structure of 1a was determined by X-ray crystallography.

Effects of fluctuations in habitat temperature (18-30 degrees) on mitochondrial respiratory behavior and oxidative metabolic responses in the euryhaline ectotherm Scylla serrate are not fully understood. In the present study, effects of different temperatures ranging from 12 to 40 degrees C on glutamate and succinate mediated mitochondrial respiration, respiratory control ratio (RCR), ATP generation rate, ratio for the utilization of phosphate molecules per atomic oxygen consumption (P/O), levels of lipid peroxidation and H2O2 in isolated gill mitochondria of S. serrata are reported. The pattern of variation in the studied parameters was similar for the two substrates at different temperatures. The values recorded for RCR ( >= 3) and P/O ratio (1.4-2.7) at the temperature range of 15-25 degrees C were within the normal range reported for other animals (3-10 for RCR and 1.5-3 for P/O). Values for P/O ratio, ATP generation rate and RCR were highest at 18 degrees C when compared to the other assay temperatures. However, at low and high extreme temperatures, i.e. at 12 and 40 degrees C, states III and IV respiration rates were not clearly distinguishable from each other indicating that mitochondria were completely uncoupled. Positive correlations were noticed between temperature and the levels of both lipid peroxidation and H2O2. It is inferred that fluctuations on either side of ambient habitat temperature may adversely influence mitochondria respiration and oxidative metabolism in S. serrata. The results provide baseline data to understand the impacts of acute changes in temperature on ectotherms inhabiting estuarine or marine environments. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
