Use of precoding transforms such as Hadamard Transforms and Phase Alteration for Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) reduction in OFDM systems are well known. In this paper we propose use of Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform (IDFT) and Hadamard transform as precoding transforms in MIMO-OFDM systems to achieve low peak to average power ratio (PAPR). We show that while our approach using IDFT does not disturb the diversity gains of the MIMO-OFDM systems (spatial, temporal and frequency diversity gains), it offers a better trade-off between PAPR reduction and ML decoding complexity compared to that of the Hadamard transform precoding. We study in detail the amount of PAPR reduction achieved for the following two recently proposed full-diversity Space-Frequency coded MIMO-OFDM systems using both the IDFT and the Hadamard transform: (i) W. Su. Z. Safar, M. Olfat, K. J. R. Liu (IEEE Trans. on Signal Processing, Nov. 2003), and (ii) W. Su, Z. Safar, K. J. R. Liu (IEEE Trans. on Information Theory, Jan. 2005).

SLC22A18, a poly-specific organic cation transporter, is paternally imprinted in humans and mice. It shows loss-of-heterozygosity in childhood and adult tumors, and gain-of-imprinting in hepatocarcinomas and breast cancers. Despite the importance of this gene, its transcriptional regulation has not been studied, and the promoter has not yet been characterized. We therefore set out to identify the potential cis-regulatory elements including the promoter of this gene. The luciferase reporter assay in human cells indicated that a region from -120 by to +78 by is required for the core promoter activity. No consensus TATA or CHAT boxes were found in this region, but two Sp1 binding sites were conserved in human, chimpanzee, mouse and rat. Mutational analysis of the two Sp1 sites suggested their requirement for the promoter activity. Chromatin-immunoprecipitation showed binding of Sp1 to the promoter region in vivo. Overexpression of Sp1 in Drosophila Sp1-null SL2 cells suggested that Sp1 is the transactivator of the promoter. The human core promoter was functional in mouse 3T3 and monkey COS7 cells. We found a CpG island which spanned the core promoter and exon 1. COBRA technique did not reveal promoter methylation in 10 normal oral tissues, 14 oral tumors, and two human cell lines HuH7 and A549. This study provides the first insight into the mechanism that controls expression of this imprinted tumor suppressor gene. A COBRA-based assay has been developed to look for promoter methylation in different cancers. The present data will help to understand the regulation of this gene and its role in tumorigenesis. The conducted as well as the induced voltages on control cables and control circuits due to transient electromagnetic (EM) fields generated during switching operations in a gas-insulated substation (GIS) depend on the waveshape of the very fast transient overvoltages and the associated very-fast transient currents (VFTCs). The aim of this paper is to build a basis for characterizing the VFTC generated in gas-insulated switchgear and the, associated equipment during switching operations for the study of transient coupling phenomena. The peak magnitudes of VFTC and their dominant frequency content at various locations have been computed in a 245-kV GIS for different switching operations as well as substation configurations. Finally, the influence of the substation layout on the frequency spectrum, dominant frequencies, and the highest possible frequency component of the VFTC at various distances from the switch have been reported.

An exact expression for the frequency of a non-linear cubic spring mass system is obtained considering the effect of static deflection. An alternative expression for the approximate frequency is also obtained by the direct linearization procedure; it is shown that this is very accurate as compared with the exact method. This approximate frequency equation is used to explain a “dual behaviour” of the frequency amplitude curves.

The induction of nitrate reductase (NADPH:nitrate oxidoreductase, EC 1.6.6.3) by nitrate in Neurospora crassa and its control by amino acids have been studied. The growth-inhibitory amino acids, isoleucine and cysteine as well as the growth-promotory ones, glutamine, asparagine, arginine, histidine and NH4+, repress nitrate reductase effectively. Methionine, tryptophan, proline, aspartic acid and glutamic acid exert little control on nitrate reductase. The repression of nitrate reductase by cysteine, isoleucine, glutamine and asparagine is accompanied by inactivation of the enzyme present initially. The nitrate-induced NADPH-cytochrome c reductase (NADPH:cytochrome c oxidoreductase, EC 1.6.2.3) is also repressed by amino acids which control nitrate reductase, providing further evidence to show that these two enzyme activities may reside in the same protein. Catalase (H2O2:H2O2 oxidoreductase, EC 1.11.1.6) has been found to be induced subsequent to the induction of nitrate reductase by nitrate in N. crassa. The induction of catalase is probably by its substrate H2O2 which would be formed by the interaction of the flavine component of nitrate reductase with oxygen. The amino acids which control nitrate reductase, repress catalase also. The catalase level appears to be determined by the nitrate reductase activity of the mycelia.

A ligand series obtained from V = O stretching frequencies for different monomeric complexes of oxovanadium(IV) is shown to parallel the nephelauxetic series. The ligand series obtained from streching frequencies of other systems are also shown to compare well with the nephelauxetic series rather than the spectrochemical series.

The concentration of liver ubiquinone increased progressively with the time of feeding ubiquinone, and this increase was reflected in all the cell fractions. 2. 2. Inhibition of sterol synthesis by ubiquinone was exerted only in the liver, not in the kidney or intestine. 3. 3. Extending the period of feeding ubiquinone or increasing the concentration of ubiquinone fed had no effect on the extent of inhibition. 4. 4. Inhibition was found to be specific to ubiquinone-9, the natural major homologue in the rat liver; other homologues were ineffective. 5. 5. The site of inhibition by ubiquinone was indicated to be between acetyl-CoA and mevalonate, since there was no change in fatty acid and ketone body synthesis in ubiquinone-fed animals as compared to normal animals.

A correlation of the infrared spectra of thiocarbonyl derivatives based on the literature data has been carried out. Assignments have also been made in some new systems. Since simple alkyl thioketones are unstable, we have prepared thiofenchone in order to obtain a reference C=S stretching frequency. The C=S stretching frequency in thiofenchone has been found around 1180 cm−1 which is in fair agreement with the value calculated for thioformaldehyde. In the case of the thiocarbonyl derivatives where the C=S group is linked to elements other than nitrogen, the stretching frequency is generally found in the region 1025–1225 cm−1. Strong vibrational coupling is operative in the case of the nitrogen containing thiocarbonyl derivatives and three bands seem to consistently appear in the regions 1395–1570 cm−1, 1260–1420 cm−1, 940–1140 cm−1 due to the mixed vibrations. These bands, which may be tentatively designated as the “-N-C=S I, II and III bands”, could be useful in qualitative analysis.

The line spectral frequency (LSF) of a causal finite length sequence is a frequency at which the spectrum of the sequence annihilates or the magnitude spectrum has a spectral null. A causal finite-length sequencewith (L + 1) samples having exactly L-LSFs, is referred as an Annihilating (AH) sequence. Using some spectral properties of finite-length sequences, and some model parameters, we develop spectral decomposition structures, which are used to translate any finite-length sequence to an equivalent set of AH-sequences defined by LSFs and some complex constants. This alternate representation format of any finite-length sequence is referred as its LSF-Model. For a finite-length sequence, one can obtain multiple LSF-Models by varying the model parameters. The LSF-Model, in time domain can be used to synthesize any arbitrary causal finite-length sequence in terms of its characteristic AH-sequences. In the frequency domain, the LSF-Model can be used to obtain the spectral samples of the sequence as a linear combination of spectra of its characteristic AH-sequences. We also summarize the utility of the LSF-Model in practical discrete signal processing systems.

Counting-rate meters normally used for finding pulse frequencies are sluggish in their response to any rapid change in the pulse repetition frequency (P.R.F.). An instrument is described which measures each pulse interval and provides immediately afterwards an output voltage proportional to the reciprocal of interval duration. A response to a change in the P.R.F. as rapidly as is physically possible is obtained. The instrument has wide application in low level radiation detection and in several other fields especially for rapidly varying counting-rates.

A reciprocal relationship exists between the cytochrome P-450 content and d-aminolaevulinate synthetase activity in adult rats. In young rats the basal d-aminolaevulinate synthetase activity is higher and the cytochrome P-450 content is lower compared with the adult rat liver. Administration of allylisopropylacetamide neither induces the enzyme nor causes degradation of cytochrome P-450 in the young rat liver, unlike adult rat liver. Allylisopropylacetamide fails to induce d-aminolaevulinate synthetase in adrenalectomized–ovariectomized animals or intact animals pretreated with successive doses of the drug, in the absence of cortisol. The cortisol-mediated induction of the enzyme is sensitive to actinomycin D. Allylisopropylacetamide administration degrades microsomal haem but not nuclear haem. Haem does not counteract the decrease in cytochrome P-450 content caused by allylisopropylacetamide administration, but there is evidence for the formation of drug-resistant protein-bound haem in liver microsomal material under these conditions. Phenobarbital induces d-aminolaevulinate synthetase under conditions when there is no breakdown of cytochrome P-450. On the basis of these results and those already published, a model is proposed for the regulation of d-aminolaevulinate synthetase induction in rat liver.
