Oxovanadium(IV) complexes VO(L)(B)](ClO4) (1-3) of N-2-pyridylmethylidine-2-hydroxyphenylamine (HL) Schiff base and phenanthroline bases (B), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido3,2-d: 2',3'-f] quinoxaline (dpq in 2) or dipyrido3,2-a: 2',3'-c] phenazine (dppz in 3), were prepared, characterized and their DNA binding property, photo-induced DNA cleavage activity and photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells studied. The crystal structure of 1 shows the presence of a VO2+ moiety in VO2N4 coordination geometry. The complexes show a d-d band at similar to 830 nm in DMF. The complexes display an oxidative V(V)-V(IV) response near 0.5 V versus SCE and a reductive V(IV)/V(III) response near -0.65 V in DMF -0.1 M TBAP. The complexes that are avid binders to CT DNA giving K-b values within 7.1 x 10(4) to 3.2 x 10(5) M-1, do not show any significant chemical nuclease activity in presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid or glutathione. The dpq and dppz complexes are photocleavers of pUC19 DNA in UV-A light of 365 nm forming both O-1(2) and (OH)-O-center dot radicals and in near-IR light of 785 nm forming (OH)-O-center dot radicals. The dppz complex exhibits photocytotoxicity in visible light in HeLa cells (IC50 = 6.8 mu M). Flow-cytometric study on this complex shows a high sub-G1 phase in light compared to dark indicating PDT effect. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Methanol-tolerant Pt-Pd alloy catalysts supported on to carbon with varying Pt:Pd atomic ratios of 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 are prepared by a novel wet-chemical method and characterized using powder XRD, XPS, FESEM, EDAX and TEM techniques. The optimum atomic weight ratio for Pt to Pd in the carbon-supported alloy catalyst as established by linear-sweep voltammetry (LSV) and cell polarization studies is found to be 2:1. A direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) employing carbon-supported Pt-Pd (2:1) alloy (Pt-Pd/C) catalyst as the cathode catalyst delivers a peak-power density of 115 mW/cm(2) at 70 degrees C as compared to peak-power density of 60 mW/cm(2) obtained with the DMFC employing carbon-supported Pt (Pt/C) catalyst operating under similar conditions. In the literature, DMFCs operating with Pt-TiO2 (2:1)/C and Pt-Au (2:1)/C methanol-tolerant cathodes are reported to exhibit maximum ORR activity among the group of these methanol-tolerant cathodes with varying catalysts compositions. Accordingly, the present study also provides an effective route to design methanol-tolerant-oxygen-reduction catalysts for DMFCs. (C) 2011 The Electrochemical Society. Copper(II) complexes Cu(satp)(L)] (1-3) of a Schiff base thiolate (salicylidene-2-aminothiophenol, H(2)satP) and phenanthroline bases (L), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 2) and dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 3), were prepared, characterized and their anaerobic DNA photocleavage activity and hypoxic photocytotoxicity studied. The redox active complexes show the Cu(II)-Cu(I) couple near -0.5 V for 1 and near 0.0 V vs. SCE (saturated calomel electrode) for 2 and 3. The one-electron paramagnetic complexes (similar to 1.85 mu(B)) are avid DNA binders giving K(b) values within 1.0 x 10(5) - 8.0 x 10(5) M(-1). Thermal melting and viscosity data along with molecular docking calculations suggest DNA groove and/or partial intercalative binding of the complexes. The complexes show anaerobic DNA cleavage activity in red light under argon via type-I pathway, while DNA photocleavage in air proceeds via hydroxyl radical pathway. The DFT (density functional theory) calculations reveal a thyil radical pathway for the anaerobic DNA photocleavage activity and suggest the possibility of generation of a transient copper(I) species due to bond breakage between the copper and sulfur to generate the thyil radical. An oxidation of the copper(I) species is likely by oxygen in an aerobic medium or by the buffer medium in an anaerobic condition. Complex 3 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells (IC(50) = 8.3(+/- 1.0) mu M) in visible light, while showing lower dark toxicity (IC(50) = 17.2(+/- 1.0) mu M). A significant reduction in the dark toxicity is observed under hypoxic cellular conditions (IC(50) = 30.0(+/- 1.0) mu M in dark), while retaining its photocytotoxicity (IC(50) = 8.0(+/- 1.0) mu M). We analyze the dynamics of desorption of a polymer molecule which is pulled at one of its ends with force f, trying to desorb it. We assume a monomer to desorb when the pulling force on it exceeds a critical value f(c). We formulate an equation for the average position of the n-th monomer, which takes into account excluded-volume interaction through the blob-picture of a polymer under external constraints. The approach leads to a diffusion equation with a p-Laplacian for the propagation of the stretching along the chain. This has to be solved subject to a moving boundary condition. Interestingly, within this approach, the problem can be solved exactly in the trumpet, stem-flower and stem regimes. In the trumpet regime, we get tau = tau(0)n(d)(2), where n(d) is the number of monomers that have desorbed at the time tau. tau(0) is known only numerically, but for f close to f(c), it is found to be tau(0) similar to f(c)/(f(2/3) - f(c)(2/3)) If one used simple Rouse dynamics, this result would change to tau similar to f(c)n(d)(2)/(f - f(c)). In the other regimes too, one can find exact solution, and interestingly, in all regimes tau similar to n(d)(2). Copyright (C) EPLA, 2011

The crystal structures of 1 and 5 with respective square-planar CuN(3)O and square-pyramidal CuN(3)O(2) coordination geometry show significantly different core structures. Complexes 1-4 exhibit a Cu(II)-Cu(I) redox couple near -0.1 V and the Fc(+)-Fc couple at similar to 0.5 V vs SCE in DMF-0.1 M [Bu(4)(n)N] (ClO(4)) (Fc = ferrocenyl moiety). The complexes display a copper(II)-based d-d band near 600 nm and a Fc-centered band at similar to 450 nm in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes are efficient binders to calf thymus DNA. They are synthetic chemical nucleases in the presence of thiol or H(2)O(2), forming hydroxyl radicals. The photoactive complexes are cleavers of pUC19 DNA in visible light, forming hydroxyl radicals. Complexes 2-6 show photocytotoxicity in HeLa cancer cells, giving IC(50) values of 4.7, 10.2, 1.3, 4.8, and 4.3 mu M, respectively, in visible light with the appearance of apoptotic bodies. The complexes also show photocytotoxicity in MCF-7 cancer cells. Nuclear chromatin cleavage has been observed with acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) dual staining with complex 4 in visible light. The complexes induce caspase-independent apoptosis in the HeLa cells.

Bangalore is experiencing unprecedented urbanisation and sprawl in recent times due to concentrated developmental activities with impetus on industrialisation for the economic development of the region. This concentrated growth has resulted in the increase in population and consequent pressure on infrastructure, natural resources and ultimately giving rise to a plethora of serious challenges such as climate change, enhanced green-house gases emissions, lack of appropriate infrastructure, traffic congestion, and lack of basic amenities (electricity, water, and sanitation) in many localities, etc. This study shows that there has been a growth of 632% in urban areas of Greater Bangalore across 37 years (1973 to 2009). Urban heat island phenomenon is evident from large number of localities with higher local temperatures. The study unravels the pattern of growth in Greater Bangalore and its implication on local climate (an increase of ~2 to 2.5 ºC during the last decade) and also on the natural resources (76% decline in vegetation cover and 79% decline in water bodies), necessitating appropriate strategies for the sustainable management.

Lanthanide(III) complexes [Ln(pyphen)(acac)(2)(NO3)] (1, 2), [Ln(pydppz)(acac)(2)(NO3)] (3, 4) and [La(pydppz)(anacac)(2)(NO3)] (5), where Ln is La(III) (in 1, 3, 5) and Gd(III) (in 2, 4), pyphen is 6-(2-pyridyl)-1,10-phenanthroline, pydppz is 6-(2-pyridyl)-dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c] phenazine, anacac is anthracenylacetylacetonate and acac is acetylacetonate, were prepared, characterized and their DNA photocleavage activity and photocytotoxicity studied. The crystal structure of complex 2 displays a GdO6N3 coordination. The pydppz complexes 3-5 show an electronic spectral band at similar to 390 nm in DMF. The La(III) complexes are diamagnetic, while the Gd(III) complexes are paramagnetic with seven unpaired electrons. The molar conductivity data suggest 1 : 1 electrolytic nature of the complexes in aqueous DMF. They are avid binders to calf thymus DNA giving K-b in the range of 5.4 10(4)-1.2 x 10(6) M-1. Complexes 3-5 efficiently cleave supercoiled DNA to its nicked circular form in UV-A light of 365 nm via formation of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) and hydroxyl radical (HO center dot) species. Complexes 3-5 also exhibit significant photocytotoxic effect in HeLa cancer cells giving respective IC50 value of 0.16(+/- 0.01), 0.15(+/- 0.01) and 0.26 +/-(0.02) mu M in UV-A light of 365 nm, while they are less toxic in dark with an IC50 value of >3 mu M. The presence of an additional pyridyl group makes the pydppz complexes more photocytotoxic than their dppz analogues. FACS analysis of the HeLa cells treated with complex 4 shows apoptosis as the major pathway of cell death. Nuclear localization of complex 5 having an anthracenyl moiety as a fluorophore is evidenced from the confocal microscopic studies.

Organometallic compounds have recently found applications in medicinal chemistry and as diagnostic tools in chemical biology. Naturally occurring biomolecules, viz., cobalamine, NiFe hydrogenase, Acetyl-CoA synthase, etc., also contain metal-carbon bonds. Among organometallic compounds having medicinal importance, (arene)ruthenium complexes, radioactive technetium complexes and ferrocene conjugates are notable ones. Applications of photoactive organometallic complexes or metal complexes conjugated with an organometallic moiety are of recent origin. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising method to treat cancer cells in presence of light. This review primarily focuses on different aspects of the chemistry of organometallic complexes showing photocytotoxic activities. Half-sandwich tungsten, iron or ruthenium complexes are known to show photonuclease and/or photo-crosslinking activity. Photoinduced organometallic CO releasing molecules also exert photocytotoxic activity. Attempts have been made in this review to highlight the photocytotoxic behavior of various metal complexes when conjugated with a photoactive organometallic moiety, viz., ferrocene.

Ferrocene-conjugated reduced Schiff base (Fc-metH) copper(II) complexes of L-methionine and phenanthroline bases, namely, Cu(Fc-met)(B)](NO3), where B is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 2), dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 3), and 2-(naphthalen-1-yl)-1H-imidazo4,5-f]1,10]phenanthroline (nip in 4), were prepared and characterized and their photocytotoxicity studied (Fc = ferrocenyl moiety). Complexes Cu(Ph-met)(B)](NO3) of the reduced Schiff base from benzaldehyde and L-methionine (Ph-metH) and B (phen in 5, dppz in 6) were prepared and used as control species. Complexes 1 and 5 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 as a discrete monomer has a CuN3OS core with the thiomethyl group as the axial ligand. Complex 5 has a polymeric structure with a CuN3O2 core in the solid state. Complexes 5 and 6 are formulated as Cu(Ph-met)(B)(H2O)] (NO3) in an aqueous phase based on the mass spectral data. Complexes 1-4 showed the Cu(II)-Cu(I) and Fc(+)-Fc redox couples at similar to 0.0 and similar to 0.5 V vs SCE, respectively, in DMF-0.1 M (Bu4N)-N-n](ClO4). A Cu(II)-based weak d-d band near 600 nm and a relatively strong ferrocenyl band at similar to 450 nm were observed in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer (1:4 v/v). The complexes bind to calf thymus DNA, exhibit moderate chemical nuclease activity forming (OH)-O-center dot radical species, and are efficient photocleavers of pUC19 DNA in visible light of 454, 568, and 647 rim, forming (OH)-O-center dot radical as the reactive oxygen species. They are cytotoxic in HeLa (human cervical cancer) and MCF-7 (human breast cancer) cells, showing an enhancement of cytotoxicity upon visible light irradiation. Significant change in the nuclear morphology of the HeLa cells was observed with 3 in visible light compared to the nonirradiated sample. Confocal imaging using 4 showed its nuclear localization within the HeLa cells.

Oxidovanadium(IV) complexes VO(pyphen)(L)]Cl2 (1, 2) and VO(pydppz)(L)]Cl2 (3, 4), where L is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1 and 3) and dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 2 and 4) are prepared and characterized. The crystal structure of VO(pyphen)(phen)](ClO4)2 (1a) shows a six-coordinate VN5O geometry with a VO2+ moiety in which the polypyridyl ligand binds in a meridional fashion and the phen ligand displays a chelating binding mode with an N-donor site trans to the oxidovanadyl group. The complexes show a dd band within 720-750 nm in DMF. The one-electron paramagnetic complexes are 1:2 electrolytes in DMF. The complexes exhibit an irreversible VIV/VIII redox response near -0.85 V vs. SCE in DMF/0.1 M TBAP. The complexes bind to calf thymus (ct) DNA giving Kb values within 7.5 x 104 to 1.1 x 106 M1. The complexes show poor chemical nuclease activity in the dark and exhibit significant DNA-photocleaving activity in near-IR light of 705 and 785 nm forming .OH radicals. Complexes 2-4 show remarkable photocytotoxicity in HeLa cancer cells. FACS analysis of the HeLa cells treated with complex 4 shows cell death as highlighted by the sub G1 peak. Propidium iodide staining data indicate apoptosis as the primary mode of cell death.

Climate projections for the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are made using the newly developed representative concentration pathways (RCPs) under the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project 5 (CMIP5). This article provides multi-model and multi-scenario temperature and precipitation projections for India for the period 1860-2099 based on the new climate data. We find that CMIP5 ensemble mean climate is closer to observed climate than any individual model. The key findings of this study are: (i) under the business-as-usual (between RCP6.0 and RCP8.5) scenario, mean warming in India is likely to be in the range 1.7-2 degrees C by 2030s and 3.3-4.8 degrees C by 2080s relative to pre-industrial times; (ii) all-India precipitation under the business-as-usual scenario is projected to increase from 4% to 5% by 2030s and from 6% to 14% towards the end of the century (2080s) compared to the 1961-1990 baseline; (iii) while precipitation projections are generally less reliable than temperature projections, model agreement in precipitation projections increases from RCP2.6 to RCP8.5, and from short-to long-term projections, indicating that long-term precipitation projections are generally more robust than their short-term counterparts and (iv) there is a consistent positive trend in frequency of extreme precipitation days (e.g. > 40 mm/day) for decades 2060s and beyond. These new climate projections should be used in future assessment of impact of climate change and adaptation planning. There is need to consider not just the mean climate projections, but also the more important extreme projections in impact studies and as well in adaptation planning.

Pyrenylterpyridine (pytpy) oxovanadium(IV) complexes VO(pytpy)(L)]Cl-2 (1-6) of the dipyridophenazine bases (L), viz., dipyrido-6,7,8,9-tetrahydrophenazine (dpqC in 1), dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine-2-carboxylic acid (dppzc in 2), dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine-11-sulfonic acid (dppzs in 3), 7-aminodipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppza in 4), benzo-i]dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppn in 5) and dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 6) were prepared, characterized and their DNA binding, photocleavage activity and photocytotoxicity studied. The complexes which showed a d-d band near 750 nm in DMF are efficient binders to calf thymus DNA (K-b: 3.2 x 10(5)-2.9 x 10(6) M-1). The complexes showed significant pUC19 DNA cleavage in near-IR light of 785 nm forming center dot OH radicals and photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells in visible light with the benzo-i] dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine complex 5 showing a remarkably low IC50 value of 0.036 mu M. Flow-cytometric analysis shows a high sub-G1 phase cell cycle arrest in HeLa cells by the complexes on photo-irradiation. The photocytotoxicity correlates well with the hydrophobicity, photosensitizing ability and DNA binding propensity of the complexes. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
