Solvent polarity has been known to influence the triplet state structure and reactivity. Here, we present our experimental and theoretical study on the effect of solvent on the lowest triplet excited state structure of 2-chlorothioxanthone (CTX). Time-resolved absorption (TA) spectroscopy has been employed to understand the triplet state electronic structure; whereas solvent-induced structural changes have been studied using time-resolved resonance Raman (TR3) spectroscopy. Both the DFT and TD-DFT calculations have been performed in the solution phase employing self-consistent reaction field implicit solvation model to support the experimental data. It has been observed that CO stretching frequencies of the excited triplet state are sensitive to the solvent polarity and increase with the increase in the solvent polarity. Both TA and TR3 studies reveal that specific solvent effect (H-bonding) is more pronounced in comparison to the nonspecific solvent effect. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mono- and trinuclear copper(II) complexes with 2-1-(2-dimethylamino-ethylamino)-ethyl]-phenol (HL) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The mononuclear complex Cu(L)(H2O)(ONO2)] (1) crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2(1) /n with a square pyramidal Cu(II) center coordinated by the tridentate Schiff base (L) and a water ligand in the equatorial plane and an oxygen atom from nitrate in the axial position. The trinuclear complex (CuL)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (2) crystallizes in hexagonal space group P6(3); all three copper atoms are five-coordinate with square pyramidal geometries. The interactions of these complexes with calf-thymus DNA have been investigated using absorption spectrophotometry. The mononuclear complex binds more strongly than the trinuclear complex. The DNA cleavage activity of these complexes has been studied on double-stranded pBR 322 plasmid DNA by gel electrophoresis experiments in the absence and in the presence of added oxidant (H2O2). The trinuclear complex cleaves DNA more efficiently than the mononuclear complex in the presence of H2O2.

In the current communication, we report the synthesis, spectroscopic, crystal structure, DFT and photophysical studies of a new nicotinonitrile derivative, viz. 2-methoxy-6-(4-methoxy-phenyl)-4-p-tolyl-nicotinonitrile (2) as a potential blue light emitting material. The compound 2 was synthesized in good yield via a simple route. The acquired spectral and elemental analysis data were in consistent with the chemical structure of 2. The single crystal study further confirms its three dimensional structure, molecular shape, and nature of short contacts. Its DFT calculations reveal that compound 2 possesses a non-planar structure and its theoretical IR spectral data are found to be in accordance with experimental values. In addition, its UV visible and fluorescence spectral measurements prove that the compound exhibits good absorption and fluorescence properties. Also, it shows positive solvatochromic effect when the solvent polarity was varied from non-polar to polar. (c) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An investigation of a series of seven angular ``V'' shaped NPIs (1-7) is presented. The effect of substitution of these structurally similar NPIs on their photophysical properties in the solution-state and the solid-state is presented and discussed in light of experimental and computational findings. Compounds 1-7 show negligible to intensely strong emission yields in their solid-state depending on the nature of substituents appended to the oxoaryl moiety. The solution and solid-state properties of the compounds can be directly correlated with their structural rigidity, nature of substituents and intermolecular interactions. The versatile solid-state structures of the NPI siblings are deeply affected by the pendant substituents. All of the NPIs (1-7) show antiparallel dimeric pi-pi stacking interactions in their solid-state which can further extend in a parallel, alternate, orthogonal or lateral fashion depending on the steric and electronic nature of the C-4' substituents. Structural investigations including Hirshfeld surface analysis methods reveal that where strongly interacting systems show weak to moderate emission in their condensed states, weakly interacting systems show strong emission yields under the same conditions. The nature of packing and extended structures also affects the emission colors of the NPIs in their solid-states. Furthermore, DFT computational studies were utilized to understand the molecular and cumulative electronic behaviors of the NPIs. The comprehensive studies provide insight into the condensed-state luminescence of aggregationprone small molecules like NPIs and help to correlate the structure-property relationships.

The effect of sputtering parameters such as gas pressure and power on the structure, microstructure and magnetic properties of sputtered Tb-Fe thin films was investigated. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies showed that all the films were amorphous in nature irrespective of the sputtering parameters. A fine island kind of morphology was observed at low sputtering power whereas large clusters were seen at higher sputtering power. While the composition of Tb-Fe films remained constant with increasing sputtering power, the magnetic behaviour was found to change from superparamagnetic to ferromagnetic. On the other hand, the increase in argon gas pressure was found to deplete the iron concentration in Tb-Fe thin films, which in turn reduced the anisotropy and Curie temperature. Annealing of the films at 773 K did not result in any crystallization and the magnetic properties were also found to remain unchanged. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

It is demonstrated that a square patch array on a moderately lossy dielectric can be transformed into a near-perfect absorber by the addition of a metallic square loop layer between the patch array and the metal back. In this configuration, the condition of perfect absorption can be easily obtained by modifying loop dimensions. The absorption properties of this configuration are analyzed theoretically using an equivalent circuit model and full-wave electromagnetic simulations. Experimental investigations included a bistatic radar cross-section measurement, which ensured that there are no scattered fields in other directions. An array structure built on a commercially available FR4 substrate with copper metallization is used to experimentally validate these results.

Recently, a lot of interest has been centred on the optical properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), which has a similar lattice structure to graphene. Interestingly, h-BN has a wide bandgap and is biocompatible, so it has potential applications in multiphoton bioimaging, if it can exhibit large nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. However, extensive investigation into the NLO properties of h-BN have not been done so far. Here, NLO properties of 2D h-BN nanosheets (BNNS) are reported for the first time, using 1064-nm NIR laser radiation with a pulse duration of 10 ns using the Z-scan technique. The reverse saturable absorption occurs in aqueous colloidal solutions of BNNS with a very large two-photon absorption cross section (sigma(2PA)) of approximate to 57 x 10(-46) cm(4) s(-1) photon(-1). Also, by using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, the temperature coefficient of the bandgap (dE(g)/dT) of BNNS is determined to be 5.9 meV K-1. Further defect-induced photoluminescence emission in the UV region is obtained in the 283-303 K temperature range, under excitations of different wavelengths. The present report of large sigma(2PA) combined with stability and biocompatibility could open up new possibilities for the application of BNNS as a potential optical material for multiphoton bioimaging and advanced photonic devices.

Dilute magnetic semiconducting Zn1-xCrxS (x = 0.00, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07) nanoparticles were synthesized by the co-precipitation technique using thioglycerol as the capping agent. Powder X-ray diffraction studies showed that Zn1-xCrxS nanoparticles exhibit zinc blende structure with no secondary phase, indicating that Cr ions are substituted at the Zn sites. Photoluminescence and Raman studies show the incorporation of Cr in ZnS nanoparticles. X-ray absorption studies depict that the valence of Zn remains unchanged and maintained in the divalent state, upon doping with Cr. The M-H curves at room temperature indicate the presence of weak ferromagnetism at room temperature due to structural defects. The increase in ferromagnetism with increasing Cr content up to 3%, demonstrates the possibility of tailoring the weak ferromagnetism in ZnS by appropriate Cr doping. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. In order to obtain better materials, control over the precise location of nanoparticles is indispensable. It is shown here that ordered arrangements of nanoparticles, possessing different characteristics (electrical/ magnetic dipoles), in the blend structure can result in excellent microwave absorption. This is manifested from a high reflection loss of ca. -67 dB for the best blend structure designed here. To attenuate electromagnetic radiation, the key parameters of high electrical conductivity and large dielectric/magnetic loss are targeted here by including a conductive material multiwall carbon nanotubes, MWNTs], ferroelectric nanostructured material with associated relaxations in the GHz frequency barium titanate, BT] and lossy ferromagnetic nanoparticles nickel ferrite, NF]. In this study, bi-continuous structures were designed using 50/50 (by wt) blends of polycarbonate (PC) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The MWNTs were modified using an electron acceptor molecule, a derivative of perylenediimide, which facilitates p-p stacking with the nanotubes and stimulates efficient charge transport in the blends. The nanoscopic materials have specific affinity towards the PVDF phase. Hence, by introducing surface-active groups, an ordered arrangement can be tailored. To accomplish this, both BT and NF were first hydroxylated followed by the introduction of amine-terminal groups on the surface. The latter facilitated nucleophilic substitution reactions with PC and resulted in their precise location. In this study, we have shown for the first time that by a compartmentalized approach, superior EM attenuation can be achieved. For instance, when the nanoparticles were localized exclusively in the PVDF phase or in both the phases, the minimum reflection losses were ca. -18 dB (for the MWNT/BT mixture) and -29 dB (for the MWNT/NF mixture), and the shielding occurred primarily through reflection. Interestingly, by adopting the compartmentalized approach wherein the lossy materials were in the PC phase and the conductive materials (MWNT) were in the PVDF phase, outstanding reflection losses of ca. -57 dB (for the BT and MWNT combination) and -67 dB (for the NF and MWNT combination) were noted and the shielding occurred primarily through absorption. Thus, the approach demonstrates that nanoscopic structuring in the blends can be achieved under macroscopic processing conditions and this strategy can further be explored to design microwave absorbers.

Developments of aluminum alloys that can retain strength at and above 250 degrees C present a significant challenge. In this paper we report an ultrafine scale Al-Fe-Ni eutectic alloy with less than 3.5 aa transition metals that exhibits room temperature ultimate tensile strength of similar to 400 MPa with a tensile ductility of 6-8%. The yield stress under compression at 300 degrees C was found to be 150 MPa. We attribute it to the refinement of the microstructure that is achieved by suction casting in copper mold. The characterization using scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) reveals an unique composite structure that contains the Al-Al3Ni rod eutectic with spacing of similar to 90 nm enveloped by a lamellar eutectic of Al-Al9FeNi (similar to 140 nm). Observation of subsurface deformation under Vickers indentation using bonded interface technique reveals the presence of extensive shear banding during deformation that is responsible for the origin of ductility. The dislocation configuration in Al-Al3Ni eutectic colony indicates accommodation of plasticity in alpha-Al with dislocation accumulation at the alpha-Al/Al3Ni interface boundaries. In contrast the dislocation activities in the intermetallic lamellae are limited and contain set of planner dislocations across the plates. We present a detailed analysis of the fracture surface to rationalize the origin of the high strength and ductility in this class of potentially promising cast alloy. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Nanoscale ordering in a polymer blend structure is indispensable to obtain materials with tailored properties. It was established here that controlling the arrangement of nanoparticles, with different characteristics, in co-continuous PC/PVDF (polycarbonate/poly(vinylidene fluoride)) blends can result in outstanding microwave absorption (ca. 90%). An excellent reflection loss (RL) of ca. -71 dB was obtained for a model blend structure wherein the conducting (multiwall carbon nanotubes, MWNTs) and the magnetic inclusions (Fe3O4) are localized in PVDF and the dielectric inclusion (barium titanate, BT) is in PC. The MWNTs were modified using polyaniline, which facilitates better charge transport in the blends. Furthermore, by introducing surface active groups on BT nanoparticles and changing the macroscopic processing conditions, the localization of BT nanoparticles can be tailored, otherwise BT nanoparticles would localize in the preferred phase (PVDF). In this study, we have shown that by ordered arrangement of nanoparticles, the incoming EM radiation can be attenuated. For instance, when PANI-MWNTs were localized in PVDF, the shielding was mainly through reflection. Now by localizing the conducting inclusion and the magnetic lossy materials in PVDF and the dielectric materials in PC, an outstanding shielding effectiveness of ca. -37 dB was achieved where shielding was mainly through absorption (ca. 90%). Thus, this study clearly demonstrates that lightweight microwave absorbers can be designed using polymer blends as a tool.

Use of circular hexagonal honeycomb structures and tube assemblies in energy absorption systems has attracted a large number of literature on their characterization under crushing and impact loads. Notwithstanding these, effective shear moduli (G*) required for complete transverse elastic characterization and in analyses of hierarchical structures have received scant attention. In an attempt to fill this void, the present study undertakes to evaluate G* of a generalized circular honeycomb structures and tube assemblies in a diamond array structure (DAS) with no restriction on their thickness. These structures present a potential to realize a spectrum of moduli with minimal modifications, a point of relevance for manufactures and designers. To evaluate G* in this paper, models based on technical theories - thin ring theory and curved beam theory - and rigorous theory of elasticity are investigated and corroborated with FEA employing contact elements. Technical theories which give a good match for thin HCS offer compact expressions for moduli which can be harvested to study sensitivity of moduli on topology. On the other hand, elasticity model offers a very good match over a large range of thickness along with exact analysis of stresses by employing computationally efficient expressions. Engineering blend structure with tailor-made distribution of nanoparticles is the prime requisite to obtain materials with extraordinary properties. Herein, a unique strategy of distributing nanoparticles in different phases of a blend structure has resulted in >99% blocking of incoming electromagnetic (EM) radiation. This is accomplished by designing a ternary polymer blend structure using polycarbonate (PC), poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to simultaneously improve the structural, electrical, and electromagnetic interference shielding (EMI). The blend structure was made conducting by preferentially localizing the multi-wall nanotubes (MWNTs) in the PVDF phase. By taking advantage of pp stacking MWNTs was noncovalently modified with an imidazolium based ionic liquid (IL). Interestingly, the enhanced dispersion of IL-MWNTs in PVDF improved the electrical conductivity of the blends significantly. While one key requisite to attenuate EM radiation (i.e., electrical conductivity) was achieved using MWNTs, the magnetic properties of the blend structure was tuned by introducing barium ferrite (BaFe) nanoparticles, which can interact with the incoming EM radiation. By suitably modifying the surface of BaFe nanoparticles, we can tailor their localization under the macroscopic processing condition. The precise localization of BaFe nanoparticles in the PC phase, due to nucleophilic substitution reaction, and the MWNTs in the PVDF phase not only improved the conductivity but also facilitated in absorption of the incoming microwave radiation due to synergetic effect from MWNT and BaFe. The shielding effectiveness (SE) was measured in X and K-u band, and an enhanced SE of -37 dB was noted at 18 GHz frequency. PMMA, which acted as an interfacial modifier in PC/PVDF blends further, resulting in a significant enhancement in the mechanical properties besides retaining high SE. This study opens a new avenue in designing mechanically strong microwave absorbers with a suitable combination of materials.

Topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) are a new quantum state of matter in which linearly dispersed metallic surface states are protected by crystal mirror symmetry. Owing to its vanishingly small bulk band gap, a TCI like Pb0.6Sn0.4Te has poor thermoelectric properties. Breaking of crystal symmetry can widen the band gap of TCI. While breaking of mirror symmetry in a TCI has been mostly explored by various physical perturbation techniques, chemical doping, which may also alter the electronic structure of TCI by perturbing the local mirror symmetry, has not yet been explored. Herein, we demonstrate that Na doping in Pb0.6Sn0.4Te locally breaks the crystal symmetry and opens up a bulk electronic band gap, which is confirmed by direct electronic absorption spectroscopy and electronic structure calculations. Na doping in Pb0.6Sn0.4Te increases p-type carrier concentration and suppresses the bipolar conduction (by widening the band gap), which collectively gives rise to a promising zT of 1 at 856 K for Pb0.58Sn0.40Na0.02Te. Breaking of crystal symmetry by chemical doping widens the bulk band gap in TCI, which uncovers a route to improve TCI for thermoelectric applications.

GdxZn1-xO (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04 and 0.06) nanostructures have been synthesized using sol-gel technique and characterized to understand their structural and magnetic properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that Gd (0, 2, 4 and 6 %)-doped ZnO nanostructures crystallized in the wurtzite structure having space group C3(v) (P6(3)mc). Photoluminescence and Raman studies of Gd-doped ZnO powder show the formation of singly ionized oxygen vacancies. X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that Gd replaces the Zn atoms in the host lattice and maintains the crystal symmetry with slight lattice distortion. Gd L-3-edge spectra reveal charge transfer between Zn and Gd dopant ions. O K-edge spectra also depict the charge transfer through the oxygen bridge (Gd-O-Zn). Weak magnetic ordering is observed in all Gd-doped ZnO samples.
