The high efficiency of fuel-cell-powered electric vehicles makes them a potentially viable option for future transportation. Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) are most promising among various fuel cells for electric traction due to their quick start-up and low-temperature operation. In recent years, the performance of PEFCs has reached the acceptable level both for automotive and stationary applications and efforts are now being expended in increasing their durability, which remains a major concern in their commercialization. To make PEFCs meet automotive targets an understanding of the factors affecting the stability of carbon support and platinum catalyst is critical. Alloying platinum (Pt) with first-row transition metals such as cobalt (Co) is reported to facilitate both higher degree of crystallinity and enhanced activity in relation to pristine Pt. But a major challenge for the application of Pt-transition metal alloys in PEFCs is to improve the stability of these binary catalysts. Dissolution of the non-precious metal in the acidic environment could alleviate the activity of the catalysts and hence cell performance. The use of graphitic carbon as cathode-catalyst support enhances the long-term stability of Pt and its alloys in relation to non-graphitic carbon as the former exhibits higher resistance to carbon corrosion in relation to the latter in PEFC cathodes during accelerated-stress test (AST). Changes in electrochemical surface area (ESA), cell performance and charge-transfer resistance are monitored during AST through cyclic voltammetry, cell polarization and impedance measurements, respectively. Studies on catalytic electrodes with X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy reflect that graphitic carbon-support resists carbon corrosion and helps mitigating aggregation of Pt and Pt3Co catalyst particles. A 12 V Substrate-Integrated PbO2-Activated Carbon hybrid ultracapacitor (SI-PbO2-AC HUCs) with silica-gel sulfuric acid electrolyte is developed and performance tested. The performance of the silica-gel based hybrid ultracapacitor is compared with flooded and AGM-based HUCs. These HUCs comprise substrate-integrated PbO2 (SI-PbO2) as positive electrodes and high surface-area activated carbon with dense graphite-sheet substrate as negative electrodes. 12 V SI-PbO2-AC HUCs with flooded, AGM and gel electrolytes are found to have capacitance values of 308 F, 184 F, and 269 F at C-rate and can be pulse charged and discharged for 100,000 cycles with only a nominal decrease in their capacitance values. The best performance is exhibited by gel-electrolyte HUCs.

Thermodynamic properties of GdRhO3 are investigated in the temperature range from 900 to 1300 K by employing a solid-state electrochemical cell, incorporating calcia-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte. The standard Gibbs free energy of formation of GdRhO3 from component binary oxide Gd2O3 with C-rare earth structure and Rh2O3 with orthorhombic structure can be expressed as; Delta G(f(ox))(o)(+/- 60)/J mol(-1) = -56603 + 3.78(T/K) Based on the thermodynamic information on GdRhO3 from experiment and auxiliary data for binary oxides from the literature and estimated properties of Gd-Rh alloys, phase relations are computed for the system Gd-Rh-O at 1273 K. Gibbs free energies for intermetallic phases in the binary Gd-Rh are evaluated using calorimetric data available in the literature for two compositions and Miedema's model, consistent with the binary phase diagram. Isothermal section of the ternary phase diagram, oxygen potential-composition diagram and a 3-D chemical potential diagram for the system Gd-Rh-O at 1273 K are developed. Phase relations in the ternary Gd-Rh-O are also computed as a function of temperature at constant oxygen partial pressures. The ternary oxide, GdRhO3 decomposes to Gd2O3 with B-rare earth structure, metallic Rh and O-2 at 1759(+/- 2) K in pure O-2 and 1649(+/- 2) K in air at a total pressure P-0 -0.1 MPa. Previous studies on a single-cavity, compact trapped vortex combustor concept showed good flame stability for a wide range of flow conditions. However, achieving good mixing between cavity products and mainstream flow was still a major challenge. In the present study, a passive mixing enhancement strategy of using inclined struts along with a flow guide vane is presented and experimentally tested at atmospheric pressure conditions. Results show excellent mixing and consequently low values of the combustor exit pattern factor in the range of 0.1 and small flame lengths (57 times the main-duct depth). The pressure drop is small in the range of 0.35%, and NOx levels of the order of 12ppm are achieved. The flame stability is excellent, and combustion efficiency is reasonable in the range of 96%. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is explained on the basis of in-situ OH chemiluminescence images and prior numerical simulations of the resulting complex flow field. The flow guide vane is observed to lead to a counterclockwise cavity vortex, which is conducive to the rise of cavity combustion products along the inclined struts and subsequent mixing with the mainstream flow.

Nanodendritic Pd is electrodeposited on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) coated carbon paper electrode. Electrodeposited Pd is non-dendritic in the absence of PEDOT. The electrooxidation of C-3-aliphatic alcohols, namely, propanol (PA), 1,2- propanediol (1, 2-PD), 1, 3-propanediol (1, 3-PD), and glycerol (GL) is studied in 1.0 M NaOH. The catalytic activity of nanodendritic Pd is greater than that of non-dendritic Pd for oxidation of the four alcohols molecules. Among those molecules the oxidation rate increases as: PA< 1, 2-PD < 1, 3-PD < GL. The cyclic voltammetric oxidation current peak appearing in the reverse direction of the sweep is greatly influenced by the nature of alcohol. The reduction of oxide film on Pd surface is attributed to affect the magnitude of backward peak current density. The amperometry and repeated cyclic voltammetry data suggest a high stability of nanodendritic Pd in alkaline medium. Glycerol is expected to be an appropriate alcohol for application as a fuel in alkaline fuel cells at nanodendritic electrodeposited Pd.

Porous flower-like alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures synthesized by an ethylene glycol mediated self-assembly process are crystalline and porous with BET surface area of 64.6 m(2) g(-1). The discharge capacitance is 127 F g(-1) when the electrodes are cycled in 0.5 M Na2SO3 at a current density of 1 A g(-1). Capacitance retention after 1000 cycles is about 80% of the initial capacitance. The high discharge capacitance and its retention are attributed to high surface area and porosity of the iron oxide. As the iron oxides are inexpensive, the nano alpha-Fe2O3 is expected to be of potential use for supercapacitor application.

We prove that every isometry from the unit disk Delta in , endowed with the Poincar, distance, to a strongly convex bounded domain Omega of class in , endowed with the Kobayashi distance, is the composition of a complex geodesic of Omega with either a conformal or an anti-conformal automorphism of Delta. As a corollary we obtain that every isometry for the Kobayashi distance, from a strongly convex bounded domain of class in to a strongly convex bounded domain of class in , is either holomorphic or anti-holomorphic.

In this article we have demonstrated the influence of growth-temperature on the morphology and orientation of SnS films deposited by thermal evaporation technique. While increasing the growth-temperature, the morphology of SnS films changed from flakes-like nanocrystals to regular cubes, whereas their orientation shifted from <111> to <040> direction. The chemical composition of SnS films gradually changed from sulfur-rich to tin-rich with the increase of growth-temperature. The structural analyzes reveal that the crystal structure of SnS films probably changes from orthorhombic to tetragonal at the growth-temperature of about 410 degrees C. Raman studies show that SnS films grown at all temperatures consist of purely SnS phase, whereas the optical studies reveal that the direct optical bandgap of SnS films decreased with the increase of growth-temperature. From these results it has been emphasized that the morphology and orientation along with electrical and optical properties of nearly stoichiometric SnS films strongly depend on their growth-temperature.

We report a facile route to synthesize high quality earth abundant absorber Cu3BiS3, tailoring the band gap with the morphology manipulation and thereby analyzed the secondary phases and their role in the transport property. The sample at 48 hours reaction profile showed good semiconducting behavior, whereas other samples showed mostly a metallic behavior. Band gap was varied from 1.86 eV to 1.42 eV upon controling the reaction profile from 8 hours to 48 hours. The activation energy was calculated to be 0.102 eV. The temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) was found to be 0.03432 K-1 at 185 K. The IR photodectection properties in terms of photoresponse have been demonstrated. The high internal gain (G = 3.7 x 10(4)), responsivity (R = 3.2 x 10(4) A W-1) for 50 mW cm(-2) at 5 V make Cu3BiS3, an alternative potential absorber in meliorating the technological applications as near IR photodetectors.

Electrodeposition of Au on poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) coated carbon paper electrode results in the formation of a stable 3-D urchin-like morphology. Au-PEDOT/C electrode exhibits higher surface area, greater catalytic activity, higher sensitivity and lower detection limit for glucose analysis in an alkaline medium than Au/C electrode. Au-PEDOT/C electrode exhibits a linear current response in glucose concentration ranging up to 10 mu M with sensitivity of 515 mu A cm(-2) mu M-1 (on the basis of geometric area) and a low detection limit of 0.03 mu M with signal to noise ratio of 3. Thus, the PEDOT under-layer improves the property of Au for glucose analysis. (c) 2013 The Electrochemical Society.

This article aims at seeking the universal behavior of propagation rate variation with air superficial velocity (V-s) in a packed bed of a range of biomass particles in reverse downdraft mode while also resolving the differing and conflicting explanations in the literature. Toward this, measurements are made of exit gas composition, gas phase and condensed phase surface temperature (T-g and T-s), and reaction zone thickness for a number of biomass with a range of properties. Based on these data, two regimes are identified: gasificationvolatile oxidation accompanied by char reduction reactions up to 16 +/- 1cm/s of V-s and above this, and char oxidationsimultaneous char oxidation and gas phase combustion. In the gasification regime, the measured T-s is less than T-g; a surface heat balance incorporating a diffusion controlled model for flaming combustion gives and matches with the experimental results to within 5%. In the char oxidation regime, T-g and T-s are nearly equal and match with the equilibrium temperature at that equivalence ratio. Drawing from a recent study of the authors, the ash layer over the oxidizing char particle is shown to play a critical role in regulating the radiation heat transfer to fresh biomass in this regime and is shown to be crucial in explaining the observed propagation behavior. A simple model based on radiation-convection balance that tracks the temperature-time evolution of a fresh biomass particle is shown to support the universal behavior of the experimental data on reaction front propagation rate from earlier literature and the present work for biomass with ash content up to 10% and moisture fraction up to 10%. Upstream radiant heat transfer from the ash-laden hot char modulated by the air flow is shown to be the dominant feature of this model.

Lagoons have been traditionally used in India for decentralized treatment of domestic sewage. These are cost effective as they depend mainly on natural processes without any external energy inputs. This study focuses on the treatment efficiency of algae-based sewage treatment plant (STP) of 67.65 million liters per day (MLD) capacity considering the characteristics of domestic wastewater (sewage) and functioning of the treatment plant, while attempting to understand the role of algae in the treatment. STP performance was assessed by diurnal as well as periodic investigations of key water quality parameters and algal biota. STP with a residence time of 14.3 days perform moderately, which is evident from the removal of total chemical oxygen demand (COD) (60 %), filterable COD (50 %), total biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) (82 %), and filterable BOD (70 %) as sewage travels from the inlet to the outlet. Furthermore, nitrogen content showed sharp variations with total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) removal of 36 %; ammonium N (NH4-N) removal efficiency of 18 %, nitrate (NO3-N) removal efficiency of 22 %, and nitrite (NO2-N) removal efficiency of 57.8 %. The predominant algae are euglenoides (in facultative lagoons) and chlorophycean members (maturation ponds). The drastic decrease of particulates and suspended matter highlights heterotrophy of euglenoides in removing particulates.

ZnO is a unique material with numerous applications. There has been great interest in the synthesis of long nanowires to explore new technology coupled with length. But the quest to enhance the length is limited by various experimental shortcomings such as catalytic poisoning, degradation of the precursors and growth in all possible directions. This review article focuses on the growth of ultralong ZnO nanowires along with possible methodologies to overcome these limitations.

Vertically aligned zinc oxide (ZnO) hierarchical nanostructures were developed by homo-epitaxial growth method using nickel as catalyst, and their physical properties were investigated and reported. ZnO nanorods grown by vapor-liquid-solid method are single crystalline and grown along the < 001 > direction, whereas the second order nano-branches are grown along the < 110 > direction. The homo-epitaxial relation between nano-branches (ZnOb) and ZnO cores (ZnOc) is found to be (110)ZnOb//(110)ZnOc and (002)ZnOb//(002)ZnOc. The simple and hierarchical nanostructures exhibited ultra-violet emission peak at 380 nm as near band edge emission of ZnO and have very weak defects related peak at 492 nm. Electrochemically deposited porous film of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) on carbon paper current collector is used as the substrate for electrochemical deposition of Au. PEDOT facilitates the formation of Au nanoflowers with an enhanced electrochemical active surface area, when compared with sub-micron size Au particles deposited on bare carbon paper electrode. Owing to enhanced surface area of Au nanoflowers, the Au-PEDOT/C electrode shows greater activity than Au/C electrode toward electrooxidation of glucose in 0.5 M NaOH electrolyte. Cyclic voltammetry studies show that the peak current density increases with increase in concentrations of glucose and NaOH in the electrolyte. H-1-NMR spectroscopy data indicates that sodium formate and gluconate are the primary products of electrooxidation of glucose on Au-PEDOT/C electrode. Repetitive cyclic voltametry and amperometry studies suggest that the electrochemical stability of Au-PEDOT/C electrode is higher than that of Au/C electrode. Thus, electrochemically deposited nanostructured Au on PEDOT/C is an efficient catalyst for direct glucose oxidation in alkaline media. (C) 2013 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.
