Examining theories with an extended strong interaction sector such as axigluons or flavour universal colorons, we find that the constraints obtained from the current data on $t \bar t$ production at the Tevatron are in the range of $\sim {\cal O}$ TeV and thus competitive with those obtained from the dijet data. We point out that for large axigluon/coloron masses, the limits on the coloron mass may be different than those for the axigluon even for $\cot \xi = 1$. We also compute the expected forward-backward asymmetry for the case of the axigluons which would allow it to be discriminated against the SM as also the colorons. We further find that at the LHC, the signal should be visible in the $t \bar t$ invariant mass spectrum for a wide range of axigluon and coloron masses that are still allowed. We point out how top polarisation may be used to further discriminate the axigluon and coloron case from the SM as well as from each other.

Electrostatic self-assembly of colloidal and nanoparticles has attracted a lot of attention in recent years, since it offers the possibility of producing novel crystalline structures that have the potential to be used as advanced materials for photonic and other applications. The stoichiometry of these crystals is not constrained by charge neutrality of the two types of particles due to the presence of counterions, and hence a variety of three-dimensional structures have been observed depending on the relative sizes of the particles and their charge. Here we report structural polymorphism of two-dimensional crystals of oppositely charged linear macroions, namely DNA and self-assembled cylindrical micelles of cationic amphiphiles. Our system differs from those studied earlier in terms of the presence of a strongly binding counterion that competes with DNA to bind to the micelle. The presence of these counterions leads to novel structures of these crystals, such as a square lattice and a root 3 x root 3 superlattice of an underlying hexagonal lattice, determined from a detailed analysis of the small-angle diffraction data. These lower-dimensional equilibrium systems can play an important role in developing a deeper theoretical understanding of the stability of crystals of oppositely charged particles. Further, it should be possible to use the same design principles to fabricate structures on a longer length-scale by an appropriate choice of the two macroions.

We study the possibility of finger printing a strongly interacting W boson sector which is consistent with present day LHC searches at the ILC with longitudinal as well as transversely polarized electron and positron beams. We account for the final state interaction using a suitable Omnes formalism in terms of a plausible resonance description, and carry out thorough analyses of cross sections, asymmetries and angular distributions of the W's. We carry out a comparison with other extensions of the Standard Model, where heavy additional Z' bosons arise naturally. We also consider the effect of the strong final state interaction on a correlation that depends on (phi(-) -phi(+)),where the phi-(+) are the azimuthal angles of decay leptons, and find that it is a useful discriminant.
Strongly magnetized cold degenerate electron gas: Mass-radius relation of the magnetized white dwarf
Resumo:
We consider a relativistic, degenerate electron gas at zero temperature under the influence of a strong, uniform, static magnetic field, neglecting any form of interactions. Since the density of states for the electrons changes due to the presence of the magnetic field (which gives rise to Landau quantization), the corresponding equation of state also gets modified. In order to investigate the effect of very strong magnetic field, we focus only on systems in which a maximum of either one, two, or three Landau level(s) is/are occupied. This is important since, if a very large number of Landau levels are filled, it implies a very low magnetic field strength which yields back Chandrasekhar's celebrated nonmagnetic results. The maximum number of occupied Landau levels is fixed by the correct choice of two parameters, namely, the magnetic field strength and the maximum Fermi energy of the system. We study the equations of state of these one-level, two-level, and three-level systems and compare them by taking three different maximum Fermi energies. We also find the effect of the strong magnetic field on the mass-radius relation of the underlying star composed of the gas stated above. We obtain an exciting result that it is possible to have an electron-degenerate static star, namely, magnetized white dwarfs, with a mass significantly greater than the Chandrasekhar limit in the range 2.3-2.6M(circle dot), provided it has an appropriate magnetic field strength and central density. In fact, recent observations of peculiar type Ia supernovae-SN 2006gz, SN 2007if, SN 2009dc, SN 2003fg-seem to suggest super-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarfs with masses up to 2.4-2.8M(circle dot) as their most likely progenitors. Interestingly, our results seem to lie within these observational limits.

We present thermal and electrical transport measurements of low-density (10(14) m(-2)), mesoscopic two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures at sub-Kelvin temperatures. We find that even in the supposedly strongly localized regime, where the electrical resistivity of the system is two orders of magnitude greater than the quantum of resistance h/e(2), the thermopower decreases linearly with temperature indicating metallicity. Remarkably, the magnitude of the thermopower exceeds the predicted value in noninteracting metallic 2DESs at similar carrier densities by over two orders of magnitude. Our results indicate a new quantum state and possibly a novel class of itinerant quasiparticles in dilute 2DESs at low temperatures where the Coulomb interaction plays a pivotal role.

The structure of the hydrogen bond network is a key element for understanding water's thermodynamic and kinetic anomalies. While ambient water is strongly believed to be a uniform, continuous hydrogen-bonded liquid, there is growing consensus that supercooled water is better described in terms of distinct domains with either a low-density ice-like structure or a high-density disordered one. We evidenced two distinct rotational mobilities of probe molecules in interstitial supercooled water of polycrystalline ice Banerjee D, et al. (2009) ESR evidence for 2 coexisting liquid phases in deeply supercooled bulk water. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 106: 11448-11453]. Here we show that, by increasing the confinement of interstitial water, the mobility of probe molecules, surprisingly, increases. We argue that loose confinement allows the presence of ice-like regions in supercooled water, whereas a tighter confinement yields the suppression of this ordered fraction and leads to higher fluidity. Compelling evidence of the presence of ice-like regions is provided by the probe orientational entropy barrier which is set, through hydrogen bonding, by the configuration of the surrounding water molecules and yields a direct measure of the configurational entropy of the same. We find that, under loose confinement of supercooled water, the entropy barrier surmounted by the slower probe fraction exceeds that of equilibrium water by the melting entropy of ice, whereas no increase of the barrier is observed under stronger confinement. The lower limit of metastability of supercooled water is discussed.

Distributed compressed sensing exploits information redundancy, inbuilt in multi-signal ensembles with interas well as intra-signal correlations, to reconstruct undersampled signals. In this paper we revisit this problem, albeit from a different perspective, of taking streaming data, from several correlated sources, as input to a real time system which, without any a priori information, incrementally learns and admits each source into the system.

In this paper, a suitable nondimensional `orthotropy parameter' is defined and asymptotic expansions are found for the wavenumbers in in vacuo and fluid-filled orthotropic circular cylindrical shells modeled by the Donnell-Mushtari theory. Here, the elastic moduli in the two directions are greatly different; the particular case of E-x >> E-theta is studied in detail, i.e., the elastic modulus in the longitudinal direction is much larger than the elastic modulus in the circumferential direction. These results are compared with the corresponding results for a `slightly orthotropic' shell (E-x approximate to E-theta) and an isotropic shell. The novelty of this presentation lies in obtaining closed-form expansions for the in vacuo and coupled wavenumbers in an orthotropic shell using perturbation methods aiding in a better physical understanding of the problem.

We report thermopower (S) and electrical resistivity (rho (2DES) ) measurements in low-density (10(14) m(-2)), mesoscopic two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures at sub-Kelvin temperatures. We observe at temperatures a parts per thousand(2)0.7 K a linearly growing S as a function of temperature indicating metal-like behaviour. Interestingly this metallicity is not Drude-like, showing several unusual characteristics: (i) the magnitude of S exceeds the Mott prediction valid for non-interacting metallic 2DESs at similar carrier densities by over two orders of magnitude; and (ii) rho (2DES) in this regime is two orders of magnitude greater than the quantum of resistance h/e (2) and shows very little temperature-dependence. We provide evidence suggesting that these observations arise due to the formation of novel quasiparticles in the 2DES that are not electron-like. Finally, rho (2DES) and S show an intriguing decoupling in their density-dependence, the latter showing striking oscillations and even sign changes that are completely absent in the resistivity.

We prove that every isometry from the unit disk Delta in , endowed with the Poincar, distance, to a strongly convex bounded domain Omega of class in , endowed with the Kobayashi distance, is the composition of a complex geodesic of Omega with either a conformal or an anti-conformal automorphism of Delta. As a corollary we obtain that every isometry for the Kobayashi distance, from a strongly convex bounded domain of class in to a strongly convex bounded domain of class in , is either holomorphic or anti-holomorphic.

Melting and freezing transitions in two dimensional (2D) systems are known to show highly unusual characteristics. Most of the earlier studies considered atomic systems: the melting of 2D molecular solids is still largely unexplored. In order to understand the role of anisotropy as well as multiple energy and length scales present in molecular systems, here we report computer simulation studies of melting of 2D molecular systems. We computed a limited portion of the solid-liquid phase diagram. We find that the interplay between the strength of isotropic and anisotropic interactions can give rise to rich phase diagram consisting of isotropic liquid and two crystalline phases-honeycomb and oblique. The nature of the transition depends on the relative strength of the anisotropic interaction and a strongly first order melting turns into a weakly first order transition on increasing the strength of the isotropic interaction. This crossover can be attributed to an increase in stiffness of the solid phase free energy minimum on increasing the strength of the anisotropic interaction. The defects involved in melting of molecular systems are quite different from those known for the atomic systems.

This paper illustrates a Wavelet Coefficient based approach using experiments to understand the sensitivity of ultrasonic signals due to parametric variation of a crack configuration in a metal plate. A PZT patch sensor/actuator system integrated to a metal plate with through-thickness crack is used. The proposed approach uses piezoelectric patches, which can be used to both actuate and sense the ultrasonic signals. While this approach leads to more flexibility and reduced cost for larger scalability of the sensor/actuator network, the complexity of the signals increases as compared to what is encountered in conventional ultrasonic NDE problems using selective wave modes. A Damage Index (DI) has been introduced, which is function of wavelet coefficient. Experiments have been carried out for various crack sizes, crack orientations and band-limited tone-burst signal through FIR filter. For a 1 cm long crack interrogated with 20 kHz tone-burst signal, the Damage Index (DI) for the horizontal crack orientation increases by about 70% with respect to that for 135 degrees oriented crack and it increases by about 33% with respect to the vertically oriented crack. The detailed results reported in this paper is a step forward to developing computational schemes for parametric identification of damage using sensor/actuator network and ultrasonic wave.

Acoustic signal variation and female preference for different signal components constitute the prerequisite framework to study the mechanisms of sexual selection that shape acoustic communication. Despite several studies of acoustic communication in crickets, information on both male calling song variation in the field and female preference in the same system is lacking for most species. Previous studies on acoustic signal variation either were carried out on populations maintained in the laboratory or did not investigate signal repeatability. We therefore used repeatability analysis to quantify variation in the spectral, temporal and amplitudinal characteristics of the male calling song of the field cricket Plebeiogryllus guttiventris in a wild population, at two temporal scales, within and across nights. Carrier frequency (CF) was the most repeatable character across nights, whereas chirp period (CP) had low repeatability across nights. We investigated whether female preferences were more likely to be based on features with high (CF) or low (CP) repeatability. Females showed no consistent preferences for CF but were significantly more attracted towards signals with short CPs. The attractiveness of lower CP calls disappeared, however, when traded off with sound pressure level (SPL). SPL was the only acoustic feature that was significantly positively correlated with male body size. Since relative SPL affects female phonotaxis strongly and can vary unpredictably based on male spacing, our results suggest that even strong female preferences for acoustic features may not necessarily translate into greater advantage for males possessing these features in the field. In wireless sensor networks (WSNs) the communication traffic is often time and space correlated, where multiple nodes in a proximity start transmitting at the same time. Such a situation is known as spatially correlated contention. The random access methods to resolve such contention suffers from high collision rate, whereas the traditional distributed TDMA scheduling techniques primarily try to improve the network capacity by reducing the schedule length. Usually, the situation of spatially correlated contention persists only for a short duration and therefore generating an optimal or sub-optimal schedule is not very useful. On the other hand, if the algorithm takes very large time to schedule, it will not only introduce additional delay in the data transfer but also consume more energy. To efficiently handle the spatially correlated contention in WSNs, we present a distributed TDMA slot scheduling algorithm, called DTSS algorithm. The DTSS algorithm is designed with the primary objective of reducing the time required to perform scheduling, while restricting the schedule length to maximum degree of interference graph. The algorithm uses randomized TDMA channel access as the mechanism to transmit protocol messages, which bounds the message delay and therefore reduces the time required to get a feasible schedule. The DTSS algorithm supports unicast, multicast and broadcast scheduling, simultaneously without any modification in the protocol. The protocol has been simulated using Castalia simulator to evaluate the run time performance. Simulation results show that our protocol is able to considerably reduce the time required to schedule.
