The behavior of the chelate, ferric dipivaloylmethide, Fe(DPM)3, in vinyl polymerization systems was investigated. The polymerization was found to be of free-radical nature. The rate of polymerization was proportional to the square root of the concentration of the chelate. The monomer exponent was close to 1.5 for the Fe(DPM)3-initiated polymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate. The kinetic and transfer constants and activation energies for these systems have been evaluated. Spectral studies revealed the possibility of a complex formation between the chelate and the monomer. A kinetic scheme for the Fe(DPM)3-initiated polymerization is derived based on this initial complex formation.

The nature of the interaction between the unsaturated monomer and the chelate, Fe(DPM)3, is studied in detail. The interaction is found to occur only in solution. The stoichiometry of interaction and the equilibrium constant are evaluated. With the help of spectral evidence, attempts are made to point out the specific sites of interaction.

Polymer electrolytes are known to possess excellent physicochemical properties that are very useful for electrochemical energy systems. The mobility in polymer electrolytes is understood to be mainly due to the segmental motion of polymer chains and the ion transport is generally restricted to the amorphous phase of the polymer. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPE) that are formed using plastizicers and polymers along with ionic salts are known to exhibit liquid-like ionic conductivity while maintaining the dimensional stability of a solid matrix. In the present study, the preparation and characterization of poly(vinyl alcohol)-based hydrogel membranes (PHMEs) as electrolyte for electrochemical capacitors have been reported. VaryingHClO4 dopant concentration leads to different characteristics of the capacitors. The EC comprising PHME doped with 2 M HClO4 and black pearl carbon (BPC) electrodes has been found to exhibit a maximum specific capacitance value of 97 F g(-1), a phase angle value of 78A degrees, and a maximum charge-discharge coulombic efficiency of 88%.

Fabrication of multilayer ultrathin composite films composed of nanosized titanium dioxide particles (P25, Degussa) and polyelectrolytes (PELs), such as poly(allyl amine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrene sulfonate sodium salt) (PSS), on glass substrates using the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique and its potentia application for the photodegradation of rhodamine B under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation has been reported. The polyelectrolytes and TiO2 were deposited on glass substrates at pH 2.5 and the growth of the multilayers was studied using UV/vis speccrophotometer. Thicknes measurements of the films showed a linear increase in film thickness with increase in number of bilayers. The surface microstructure of the thin films was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope. The ability of the catalysts immobilized by this technique was compared with TiO2 films prepared by drop casting and spin coating methods. Comparison has been made in terms of film stability and photodegradation of rhodamine B. Process variables such as the effect of surface area of the multilayers, umber of bilayers, and initial dye concentration on photodegradation of rhodamine B were studied. Degradation efficiency increased with increase in number of catalysts (total surface area) and bilayers. Kinetics analysis indicated that the photodegradation rates follow first order kinetics. Under maximum loading of TiO2, with five catalyst slides having 20 bilayers of polyelectrolyte/TiO2 on each, 100 mL of 10 mg/L dye solution could be degraded completely in 4 h. The same slides could be reused with the same efficiency for several cycles. This study demonstrates that nanoparticles can be used in wastewater treatment using a simple immobilization technique. This makes the process an attractive option for scale up.

The copolymers, poly(methyl methacrylate-co-methyl acrylate) (PMMAMA), poly(methyl methacrylate-co-ethyl acrylate) (PMMAEA) and poly(methyl methacrylate-co-butyl acrylate) (PMMABA), of different compositions were synthesized and characterized. The effect of alkyl acrylate content, alkyl group substituents and solvents on the ultrasonic degradation of these copolymers was studied. A model based on continuous distribution kinetics was used to study the kinetics of degradation. The rate coefficients were obtained by fitting the experimental data with the model. The linear dependence of the rate coefficients on the logarithm of the vapor pressure of the solvent indicated that vapor pressure is the crucial parameter that controls the degradation process. The rate of degradation increases with an increase in the alkyl acrylate content. At any particular copolymer composition, the rate of degradation follows the order: PMMAMA > PMMAEA > PMMABA. It was observed that the degradation rate coefficient varies linearly with the mole percentage of the alkyl acrylate in the copolymer.

Conjugated polymers are promising materials for electrochromic device technology. Aqueous dispersions of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-(PEDOT) were spin coated onto transparent conducting oxide (TCO) coated glass substrates. A seven-layer electrochromic device was fabricated with the following configuration: glass/transparent conducting oxide (TCO)/PEDOT (main electrochromic layer)/gel electrolyte/prussian blue (counter electrode)/TCO/glass. The device fabricated with counter electrode (Prussian blue) showed a contrast of 18% and without counter electrode showed visible contrast of 5% at 632 nm at a voltage of 1.9 V. The comparison of the device is done in terms of the colouration efficiency of the devices with and without counter electrode.

The possibility of obtaining relatively high dielectric constant polymer-ceramic composite by incorporating the giant dielectric constant material, CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) in a Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer matrix by melt mixing and hot pressing process was demonstrated. The structure, morphology and dielectric properties of the composites were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Thermal analysis. scanning electron microscope, and impedance analyzer. The effective dielectric constant a(epsilon(eff)) of the composite increased with increase in the volume fraction of CCTO at all the frequencies(100 Hz-1 MHz) under study. The dielectric loss did not show any variation up to 40% loading of CCTO, but showed an increasing trend beyond 40%. The room temperature dielectric constant as high as 95 at 100 Hz has been realized for the composite with 55 vol.% of CCTO, which has increased to about 190 at 150 degrees C. Theoretical models like Maxwell's, Clausius-Mossotti, Effective medium theory, logarithmic law and Yamada were employed to rationalize the dielectric behaviour of the composite and discussed. A membrane with interpenetrating networks between poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA) coupled with a high proton conductivity is realized and evaluated as a proton exchange membrane electrolyte for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). Its reduced methanol permeability and improved performance in DMFCs suggest the new blend as an alternative membrane to Nafion membranes. The membrane has been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, time-modulated differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis in conjunction with its mechanical strength. The maximum proton conductivity of 3.3×10−2 S/cm for the PVA–PSSA blend membrane is observed at 373 K. From nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and volume localized spectroscopy experiments, the PVA–PSSA membrane has been found to exhibit a promising methanol impermeability, in DMFCs. On evaluating its utility in a DMFC, it has been found that a peak power density of 90 mW/cm2 at a load current density of 320 mA/cm2 is achieved with the PVA–PSSA membrane compared to a peak power density of 75 mW/cm2 at a load current density of 250 mA/cm2 achievable for a DMFC employing Nafion membrane electrolyte while operating under identical conditions; this is attributed primarily to the methanol crossover mitigating property of the PVA–PSSA membrane.

This study discusses grafting of methyl methacrylate units from thepolymeric soybean oil peroxide to produce poly(soybean oil-graft-methyl methacrylate) (PSO-g-PMMA). The degradation of this copolymer in solution was evaluated in the presence of different lipases, viz Candida rugosa (CR), Lipolase 100T (LP), Novozym 435 (N435) and Porcine pancreas (PP), at different temperatures The copolymer degraded by specific chain end scission and the mass fraction of the specific product evolved was determined The degradation was modeled using continuous distribution kinetics to determine the rate coefficients ofmenzymatic chain end scission and deactivation of the enzyme The enzymes, CR. LP and N435 exhibited maximum activity for the degradation of PSO-g-PMMA at 60 degrees C, while PP was most active at 50 degrees C. The thermal degradability of the copolymer, assessed by thermo-gravimetry, indicated that the activation energy of degradation of the copolymer was 154 kJ mol(-1), which was lesser than that of the PMMA homopolymer.

Chitosan grafted poly(alkyl methacrylate)s (namely chitosan grafted poly(methyl methacrylate) (ChgPMMA), chitosan grafted poly(ethyl methacrylate)(ChgPEMA), chitosan grafted poly(butyl methacrylate) (ChgPBMA) and chitosan grafted poly(hexyl methacrylate) (ChgPHMA)) were synthesized and characterized by using FT-IR and C-13 NMR techniques. The adsorption batch experiments on these grafted copolymers were conducted by using an anionic sulfonated dye. Orange-G. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model was used to determine the kinetics of adsorption. The effect of grafting, effect of process variables and the effect of different sulfonated anionic dyes (Orange-C, Congo Red, Remazol Brill Blue R and Methyl Blue) on the adsorption kinetics was determined. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were used to fit the adsorption isotherms and from the values of correlation coefficients (R-2), it was observed that the experimental data fits very well to the Langmuir model. The values of the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbents follow the order: ChgPMMA > ChgPEMA > ChgPBMA > ChgPHMA > chitosan. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Main chain and segmental dynamics of polyisoprene (PI) and poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) chains in semi IPNs were systematically studied over a wide range of temperatures (above and below T-g of both polymers) as a function of composition, crosslink density, and molecular weight. The immiscible polymers retained most of its characteristic molecular motion; however, the semi IPN synthesis resulted in dramatic changes in the motional behavior of both polymers due to the molecular level interpenetration between two polymer chains. ESR spin probe method was found to be sensitive to the concentration changes of PMMA in semi IPNs. Low temperature spectra showed the characteristics of rigid limit spectra, and in the range of 293-373 K.complex spectra were obtained with the slow component mostly arisingout of the PMMA rich regions and fast component from the PI phase. We found that the rigid PMMA chains closely interpenetrated into thehighly mobile PI network imparts motional restriction in nearby PI chains, and the highly mobile PI chains induce some degree of flexibility in highly rigid PMMA chains. Molecular level interchain mixing was found to be more efficient at a PMMA concentration of 35 wt.%. Moreover, the strong interphase formed in the above mentionedsemi IPN contributed to the large slow component in the ESR spectra at higher temperature. The shape of the spectra along with the data obtained from the simulations of spectra was correlated to the morphology of the semi IPNs. The correlation time measurement detected the motional region associated with the glass transition of PI and PMMA, and these regions were found to follow the same pattern of shifts in a-relaxation of PI and PMMA observed in DMA analysis. Activation energies associated with the T-g regions were also calculated. T-50G was found to correlate with the T-g of PMMA, and the volume of polymer segments undergoing glass transitional motion was calculated to be 1.7 nm(3).C-13 T-1 rho measurements of PMMA carbons indicate that the molecular level interactions were strong in semi IPN irrespective of the immiscible nature of polymers. The motional characteristics of H atoms attached to carbon atoms in both polymers were analyzed using 2D WISE NMR. Main relaxations of both components shifted inward, and both SEM and TEM analysis showed the development of a nanometer sized morphology in the case of highly crosslinked semi IPN. Seawater aging response was investigated in marine-grade glass/epoxy, glass/vinyl ester, carbon/epoxy and carbon/vinyl ester composites with respect to water uptake, interlaminar shear strength, flexural strength, tensile strength, and tensile fracture surface observations. The reduction of mechanical properties was found to be higher in them initial stages which showed saturation in the longer durations of seawater immersion. The flexural strength and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) dropped by about 35% and 27% for glass/epoxy, 22% and 15% for glass/vinyl ester, 48% and 34% for carbon/epoxy 28%, and 21% carbon/vinyl ester composites respectively. The water uptake behavior of epoxy-based composites was inferior to that of the vinyl system.

The ultrasonic degradation of poly (styrene-co-methyl methacrylate) (SMMA), poly (styrene-co-ethyl methacrylate) (SEMA) and poly (styrene-co-butyl methacrylate) (SBMA) copolymers of different compositions was studied. The copolymers were synthesized and NMR spectroscopy was used to determine the composition, and the glass transition temperatures were determined by DSC. The reactivity ratios were determined by the Kelen-Tudos method and it indicated that the copolymers were random. The effect of solvent, temperature and copolymer composition on the ultrasonic degradation rate of these copolymers was investigated. A model based on continuous distribution kinetics was employed to study the degradation kinetics. The degradation rate coefficients of the copolymers decreased with an increase in the styrene content in the copolymer. At any particular copolymer composition the rate of degradation follows the order: SBMA >SEMA > SMMA. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the copolymers was carried in order to assess their thermal stability. The same order of degradation was observed for the thermal degradation of the copolymers as that observed for ultrasonic degradation. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, biodegradable blend of Poly (Ethylene-co-Vinyl Acetate) (EVA) and Ethyl Cellulose (EC) were prepared. Ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer was used as an interfacial compatibilizer to enhance adhesion between EVA and EC. The melt blended compatibilized biocomposites were examined for mechanical and thermal properties as per the ASTM standards. It has been found that the EC has a reinforcing effect on EVA leading to enhanced tensile strength and also impart biodegradability. Thus, a high loading of 50% EC could be added without compromising Much on the mechanical properties. Analysis of the tensile data using predictive theories showed an enhanced interaction of the dispersed phase (EC) and the matrix (EVA). The compatibilizing effects of EVOH on these blends were confirmed by the significant improvement in the mechanical properties comparable with neat EVA as also observed by SEM microscopy. The TGA thermograms exhibits two-stage degradation and as EC content increases, the onset temperature for thermal degradation reduces. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
